March 9-15, 2020
Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we’re going to check out music from a short, four year span in the Grateful Dead’s history, 1969-1973.
Our first selection this week is the classic Live/Dead suite from 10/25/69 at Winterland, right around the time the album came out. Joining the festivities during Lovelight is none other than Stephen Stills: Dark Star > St. Stephen> The Eleven> Turn On Your Lovelight.
Next is music from the second leg of the Fall Tour of 1972, from 10/24/72 in Milwaukee, where we have this excellent, and unique, sequence: Truckin'> Drums > The Other One> He's Gone > The Other One.
Lastly this week is the bulk of the first set, plus the first two songs from the second set, from 10/27/73 in Indianapolis, also from the second leg of the Fall Tour, where we have They Love Each Other, Jack Straw, Ramble On Rose, El Paso, Brown Eyed Women, Greatest Story Ever Told, Loose Lucy, Beat It On Down The Line, China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider; Me and My Uncle>Bertha.
Be sure to join us here next week for more music from the vault.
The Philo Stomp was a rare treat on the fall '72 tour. This Milwaukee snippet is very good. There's a "Philo Stomp" in the Cleveland Dark Star from 10/28/72, also. I really like the selection from Indianapolis: Greatest Story is awesome! Anyone else remember the big guy that crawled up on stage and was gingerly led off by Big Steve after the song ended? Hard to find a better China > Rider with the Feelin' Groovy jam. Thanks to the powers-that-be for this week's selections.
