    word jazz!!
Ken Nordine! Word Jazz used to be broadcast on 'XRT here in Chicago (well, so did the Dead Hour, once upon a time, in a galaxy far far away. But, I digress.) The man has a voice like velvet. In the proper state of mind, it would vibrate in your ear like an open G string on a viola. Luscious, melted dark chocolate.

    Word Jazz
So happy to hear this segment...never heard it before. So true to what the Dead were all about. Hearing it, I would have expected that it was something they would have done in their formative years. Proves that even in 93 they were the most authentic band in the land

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we have Grateful Dead music from 1971, 1977 and 1993.

Our first selection is from Iowa City on 3/20/71. My this time, Mickey had been absent from the Dead for about a month, and the band had settled into the groove of the five piece original lineup that would carry them through to 8/26/71, after which time Keith would join the band. From Iowa City, we have the end of the show, featuring Casey Jones, Sugar Magnolia, Around And Around ,Uncle John's Band, Turn On Your Lovelight.

From six years later on 3/19/77 at Winterland, we have the second set jam of Eyes Of The World > Space > Dancing In The Street > Wharf Rat > Franklin's Tower > Sugar Magnolia. In typical 1977 fashion, this was a very unique sequence of songs, never to be repeated.

Lastly this week, from 3/11/93, we have the end of the second set, including a special appearance by Ken Nordine to start things out, with a sequence of Flibberty Jib On The Bippity Bop > The Island > Space > The Other One > Days Between > Around And Around.

Be sure to join us here next week with more music from the vault.

Great to hear some '71 Pigpen. "I know sometime you might go out in the evening . . . find some little lady to keep you company. I know I do sometime, and it sure is fine when I succeed." Hilarious segment right there. No one like Pigpen. He rocked.

Jerry's vocal chills me to the soul on this tune in Rosemont Horizon, 1993.

What a great era. The early years with Pig are my favorites. R.I.P. Pig.

Even in one of the many Buckles of the Bible Belts, we picked up Ken Nordine back in the early '80s here in the Ozarks, courtesy of our local NPR station. Think "iconoclastic" back then. Frakkin "Genius" dedication doesn't give him his due recognition.

Exactly. Most authentic band in the land. Pink Floyd fans don't get it, but Phish fans do.

When he started, the sound was pretty muffled. I couldn't see who was speaking and thought it might be Allen Ginsberg. The first night of the series there was a young lady crashing our front row seats. It was a struggle all night. We felt some karmic resonance when she got evicted from her hotel room the next night for non-payment.

It's quite entertaining to hear the inter-song banter and snippets of tunes. They almost go into China>Rider before kicking into Around and Around. All these nascent versions are wonderful. The Casey Jones rocks, it reminds me of an ultimate version on 'Ladies and Gents' (pick that one up if you don't have it, folks).
