    October 14 - October 20, 2013

Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we’re going to check out music from 1981, 1982, and 1989, a plethora of Brent-era Dead.

Our first selection this week is from 8/14/81 in Seattle, when we have a bit of a different sequence featuring Playing In The Band>China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider. This comes on the heels of playing the Playing>Rider from 8/5/89 here at the Tapers’ Section, an even more different sequence.

Next, from a year later on 7/28/82 at Red Rocks, we have a second sequence of Althea, Let It Grow, He's Gone>Truckin', featuring two songs usually found in the first set in Althea and Let It Grow.

Our final bit of Grateful Dead music this week is the start of the second set from the final show of a three night at Cal Expo on 8/6/89, featuring Scarlet Begonias>Fire On The Mountain, Samson and Delilah, Ship Of Fools, Man Smart Woman Smarter. This was my first time attending shows at Cal Expo, and because of how great music was, and how much fun I had, it wasn’t the last. What a great place.

Be sure to join us here next week for more tunes form the vault.

    everything's like brand new! (again)
Thanks for fixing it. They kind of cut that space jam midstream to kind of non sequitor into China Cat. Pretty satisfying overall, but it's too bad they didn't go into a Dark Star like they did NYE that year.

It seems the songs featured this week are accurate if the first four are removed from each selection- Promised/Sugaree/Jack/China Cat. Only an audience copy of the 81 show circulates.***edit...And it's fixed- Thanks!

looks like unwanted text creeping in. I'll see if we can fix it. Thanks!

But: Playin'>China Cat wasn't all that rare. The full suite of Let It Grow, never mind just the meat, was played extensively in '73, not to mention other years. Althea crept in to the 2nd set most often in the early 80s. And: Whether it be 8/4; 8/5; or 8/6, whether it be Cal Expo or the Kaiser or the Shoreline or the Greek -- The Grateful Dead ripped it up when Sirius, The Dog Star, was closest to Earth and they were playing in the Bay Area. Does anybody know what the connection is with the Grateful Dead and Sirius? Does it have anything to do with Robert Anton Wilson and The Cosmic Trigger? Just kidding about the last comment but seriously -- is there a connection through the pyramids in Egypt or the eye in the triangle? I'd be interested in any serious conjecture on the subject... I am thinking of this because of the Playin'>Rider>Terrapin from Cal Expo on 8/5/89, I think.

Was at the Expo shows in '89 as well. Never made it back there, but what a wonderful set of shows. Good times with Good people. How about releasing these Dave? I known they are in the vault somewhere. Go for It!! We will not be disappointed.

.....I like! (surprised?) I was off the bus by Cal Expo show, but was at this Red Rocks show, which , I recall in a very hazy way, as having been a blast! (spent the day rafting on the Colorado river with a rafting crew that I trading tickets to the show for the trip, and did so for subsequent Red Rocks shows, was a great way to spend the days during the shows!)

I must say, though I'm still rather green compared to the more well traveled listeners around here, I can't recall a Truckin' quite like the one here from Red Rocks 7/28/82. Was that ending jam customary, or a bit unique? I'd like to know, as one who's still learning & catching up on all the many shows past. Thought it was cool & wish we could here more of where that jam went following the fade.

Ever since she went and got a sex change?? Thats some good improv right there. I'm not sure but I think the Truckin jams usually ended like that if they led into Drums. So yeah, I'd say it was unique.

...but this is a taper's tape. No one should be prominent in the mix, such as Phil's bass on SSDD. I can hear Phil's bass pretty good on the '82 material, but I have basic Altec Lansing speakers on the computer. If you have high end audio equipment, you may not be getting the bottom end you think you should? I am certainly no audio expert, so I could be wrong.

pretty low-tech speakers. I just want crisp celery crunch phil, not saturated spaghetti phil. first world problems, ya know.

I also like to zone in on Phil sometimes. That's why I love SSDD. The bass is amazing on that release. Just getting back into the collecting game, so I'm sure there are some good releases I've missed, but I love that one.

from 72 thru to the end of the Wall of Sound. In my opinion.

Often when the Truckin' would fade into drums a jam with this structure would ensue. Many times The Other One would be hinted at prior to drums, even if it were not to be played after drums. Bobbie plays a longer and more melodic solo line at the end that was often the case, but, in general, the jam is characteristic of the year in its general form.Cheers, Eric!

The Red Rocks '82 is an absolute classic that I bet would have been released by now were it not for the lack of Phil in the mix. An uneven mix, or better said lack of Phil is found on the '81 tape here too. I noticed it right away and thought it was peculiar.

Hey, You are right on (tennessee john). When playing this on a Bose SoundLink bluetooth speaker through my macbook pro, this sounds just right. nobody is over the top, and I can follow Phil just fine. I'm a bass player, and I'm almost disappointed that I can't hear more Brent just because that's how this was advertised. Keep on keepin' on. dire_wolf in Virginia.

Thanks for your comments grateful prof & PonchoBill RE: the Truckin' jam. Hmmmm...guess I should simply remain grateful for all things, but can't help but wonder: where's the next Taper's ? Could it be that we've grown so accustomed to these royal treats, that we didn't see the end coming. Well, if that's all folks...it's been a great ride remembering & replaying the wonderful tunes :) {Maybe before Halloween we get a Tapers encore ?! Let's stomp & clap loudly, now}
