31 years ago this week, great Althea, Esau, Candyman, Let it Grow, to close out the first set. We were rolling in the top deck during Bertha and where on the floor to the left of the SBD by Althea, loved GA shows.

Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we have Grateful Dead music from 1970, 1985, and 1987.

Our first stop this week is at the Family Dog in San Francisco on 3/1/70, when the Dead were playing during one of their busiest six month stretches ever. Between the incredibly gruelling touring schedule from November 1969 to the summer of 1970, the Dead found time to record Workingman’s Dead, and shortly after its release, American Beauty. From Chet Helms’s venue, we have Beat It On Down The Line ,Dire Wolf , Good Lovin' ,Cumberland Blues, I'm A King Bee, China Cat Sunflower] > I Know You Rider.

From fifteen years later, on 11/2/85, we have music from Richmond, VA, on the excellent Fall Tour of 1985, featuring the entire first set: Bertha ; Greatest Story Ever Told ; Dupree's Diamond Blues ; C C Rider ; Althea ; My Brother Esau ; Candyman ; Let It Grow.

Lastly this week, we have another Virginia first set, this one from 7/8/87 in Roanoke: Hell In A Bucket > Sugaree, It's All Over Now, Dupree's Diamond Blues, Never Trust A Woman, When I Paint My Masterpiece, Big Railroad Blues, Let It Grow. This was a huge week for the Grateful Dead, as it saw the band release its most successful album ever, while they were selling out stadiums with Bob Dylan.

Be sure to join us here next week for more music from the vault.

Really nice to listen to this year again. Simple, austere pre WOS Dead. It was also the year of my first shows (Halloween weekend). Yupper. I saw Pigpen. :-)

Thanks for this one! I love reliving the energy and the freshness every time I hear a show from '87. Good times! Great high energy '85 set, too. Honestly not so into the stuff from 70 and before, but it's cool that others are enjoying it :) Thanks again!
