Hey Chuck9896 - you've really gotta listen closely to hear the New Orleans bust verse on the Truckin' 45. Really closely. Just kidding. I see that the single is 3 minutes 13 seconds; the American Beauty version is 5:09. Evidently they decided to take out the part about staring out of the hotel window and being set up like a bowling pin. Wow. Who knew? Thanks for pointing it out. I'll have to listen closely next time I hear this on commercial radio to see which version is played. Rock on.

..that attracts me is that compilation"Long Strange Trip". Not too pricey, and a good "Dark Star" unavailable elsewhere Also 19th May 1974 has just dropped in price significantly on Amazon since yesterday. I'll be going back to work at this rate.

    Great shows on vinyl-zxtttxz
Yes, I got Hofheinz 11/18/72 earlier this year-a great album with some outrageous bass playing on it. I have bought a few shows on vinyl this year, and I have been pleased with all of them. One you didn't mention, which is absolutely amazing, is November 10th 1967-the show in 30 Trips. It starts well, and just builds in velocity and intensity as it develops. Still available on here, too. The others I got were the February 27th 1969 show, Great American Music Hall 13th August 1975-which sounds beautiful-and the Vancouver shows from July 1966. They are a great historical document, and feature some great playing, although it was the Dead in their infancy before they truly opened up. I notice also that the 19th May 1974 show going to be released on vinyl soon-although it looks a bit expensive-so I'm not so sure about that one. It will presumably be released in cd form in the new box set, too. I am in no doubt about the remaining shows for February-March 1969 though! I only hope they release them fairly soon, and don't stagger them over a number of years and release them on record store days.

Daverock - I think you were disappointed when you went to the Brookvale site...I happen to know because I took the plunge on Harper College and noticed those two were no longer available. But maybe they're available in UK. Should be here (Nashville) in a few days. Hey! If you're looking to fill out your GD vinyl collection and do not yet have 11/18/72 Houston, let me recommend that one to you. It has great cover artwork and a wonderful side-long Playin' In the Band. It's not the whole show though...only 8 songs. I listened to 11/19/72 last night (via Maxell XL90) - boy, that Dark Star would be nice to have on a record side. By the way, I checked on Discogs for you and I can tell you that someone in UK has the 11/18/72 vinyl for sell, if you're interested. For your sake I hope you already have it. Rock on!

I've listened to all six records. I think they all sound fine. I haven't had any problems with any of them. In fact, very little surface noise, clicks/pops. It's not like I spend a lot of time spinning 7" records, but I like to give them a listen upon arrival. To be sure. I think I even listened to Box of Rain from the 30 Trips box. So, I can say that these colored vinyl records sound good to me. I like the art too. Maybe I should add that I'm not the most demanding listener. For instance, digital vs analog? I don't think I can tell the difference, or, if I can, it makes no difference to me. So others may be detecting flaws in these records that go right past me. I do like analog more than digital simply because of the format - I like looking at the album (or in this case 7") covers. I'm randomly displaying the 7' covers. Daverock - I didn't get the 5/2/70 record, but I did get Dick's Pick #2 (10/31/71) from the same company (Brookvale.) Those records (it's a two-record set) sound great. I'd like to get 2/13/70 and 5/2/70. Yes I would. Rock on!

i would imagine they do not sound the best, all of mine are still in shrink wrap. To be honest I bought these for the artwork and don't plan to listen to the singles anytime soon. I haven't even bothered with the downloads they send out, i bet they expired anyway, most of these data come and go, when after a while i bet they just disappear in the shuffle of some techies mouse click. i know what all these songs are and can listen to them via the original LP or cd cover art for Dark Star single, Stealin, and UJB are the favorites i can picture off the top of my head. I hope they give a few covers to some of the artists from 1980s decade, I can name a few, but I am sure the Rhino's already know who i would have in mind. And also would like to see Micah Nelson do one for the single series, his artwork for Dave's Picks 13-16 is very nice, 13 , 14 , 15 are top notch !!!!! 4.22.78 has gotta be in the top tier of recent cd covers for anyband. love the Wharf Rat from that show, in Camden NJ last friday during Dead and Company intermission the Wharf Rats met down by the docks of the city , it was a cool sight to witness and the band even performed Wharf Rat in 2nd set "I got no dime but I got some time to hear his story"

    Sounds - coloured vinyl ?
I wonder if the poor sound you report on this single is anything to do with the fact that its pressed on coloured vinyl? Back in the 1970s, records that were cut on coloured vinyl always had the reputation for being poorer quality. The Dead vinyl albums I have bought this year have all sounded really good. A few clicks and snaffles on Binghampton 1970-but the overall sound is great. But they are all pressed on standard black vinyl. With proud declarations about how much they weigh.

I can't help wondering who these releases are being aimed at. The Dead, by their own admission, weren't at their best in the studio. They made a hand full of classic albums, for sure, but the road was their home. But if there is some doubt over their ability to make great studio albums, there sadly isn't concerning their ability to make great singles. They were not, by any stretch of the imagination, a singles band. So I am not sure why all this energy and expense is being put into this series of re-released singles. What everyone on this board has been anticipating all year is the next box set. No one is waiting with baited breath for the re-released, limited edition, vinyl in a skeleton covered bag version of "Let Me Sing Your Blues Away".

Why are you wasting your time on this stuff? How about releasing a new series of videos, which have never seen the light of day?

These singles are being released for old timers who want a little nostalgia and younger heads who want a collectable. Who the hell are you to set yourself up as the arbiter of what is released and what people should like or buy. These aren't going to stop a box set or video release but clearly are giving some people joy. To be honest I'm not such a big fan of the new artwork but clearly it is serving a desire. Sort of like colorized movies because b&w ain't so popular anymore. Get off you high horse and don't buy if you don't like it. Just wait like the rest of us for the box set or video

A cheap little acquisition, for those interested this series of singles/B-sides. On the fancy vinyl, no less. You can't please everyone. I'm sure they sell at least a few, enough to keep the gun going. As was intimated earlier, no one is making you. So get on board or go away. \m/

The aim is to release these for people with money. Rhino paid a fortune to get back tapes they didn't have in the vault from the 60s and 70s, a few 80s shows too. So this was one way to recoup costs. 10,000 x $45 is good chunk of change. Pay the artist and whoever is remastering a few tracks per year and basically the rest is profit Similar to the movies night, Rhino makes a fortune from that. With a show that has already been released they really didn't have to do much. The money they generate from movie night helps pay for a future release which will be mentioned when the movie shows, great way to advertise. I agree with comment below, more pro-shot video would be cool but I have a feeling Rhino may not have any say in that, unless they want to pay up again. I don't think video would be something they could do. But who knows, it's just weird I believe the only vid they released recently was Sunshine Daydream and they most likely paid to get that footage

That makes sense, the way you describe it. I hadn't thought of how releases fit together, with some generating income to support the release of others. I also wondered about the rational for releasing that compilation album that came out recently-but maybe that too makes sense in the overall scheme of things. Videos of the early years would be great. Ive got what I think is-well, it must be-a bootleg of an acid test form February 1966. It features great and complete versions of various Dead songs-including Caution and Death Don't Have No Mercy. Surely that would sell like hot cakes if it was released officially. I'd buy it, anyway!

Truckin' single arrived while I was at Riverbend June 4. Show opened with Truckin. 1st set was heavy with tunes originally sung by Jerry, 2nd set as well. Like 7 or 8 in a row 1st set had a few originally from 1970 , Truckin' , Friend of the Devil , and New Speedway Boogie Rhino send out the June Fillmore West 1970 box set, I hope Deer Creek tomorrow gets a few more songs from American Beauty and Workingman's Dead album. One would be "Till The Morning Comes" but I doubt it will happen. Box of Rain would be cool too.

I'm glad mine came with the mp3 download because the 45 sounds like absolute crap. Has anyone else actually spun their record? I'm curious if I'm an outlier. Not that it really matters, it's not like I would put this on my record player over and over to listen but still. It would be kind of nice if it sounded halfway decent. I guess the only value in this is the artwork. EDIT: The artwork is really good. I meant no disrespect. It's worth getting two of these so that you can show the two sides together.
