Hi Everybody, I finally have a myspace page any comments and friend requests are appreciated. I've been a Grateful Dead fan or "deadhead" since the mid 80's or so and never could get enough. I'm also a active trader and did some taping of GD and other bands, so if anybody wants to trade that's cool with me. I have a request for my fine fellow Dead forum ladies and gents.......... A local public radio station called WYCE who supports local bands has an online vote for their awards ceremony called "The Jammie Awards". This is the 10th year and one of the projects I'm involved with is up for awards in a few catagories, the biggest being a peoples choice for best local album and best new band. The band I'm involved with is called "The Lynn Thompson Band". This year WYCE is doing an online vote for the big award, which The Lynn Thompson Band is up for. A little backstory on the local music scene here in Grand Rapids is that it has become very cliqueish over the last few years and it's really tough to get gigs and publicity here, especially if the band plays mostly original music. A very select group of bands seem to have a monopoly on the local scene and it would be great to see a total underdog band (such as The Lynn Thompson Band) win. ...........so, if anyone has a couple of spare seconds while browsing this, go to the link below to WYCE and vote for (the) Lynn Thompson Band. Strange Trip is a 5 piece band out of Atlanta, GA. Thier influences include (but not limited to) the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Santana, Phish and Ratdog. Add a little splash of Southern rock and a few drops of country and you've got Strange Trip. Strange Trip is comprised of veteran rhythm guitarist Allen Peacock (Blue Rufus, Rainbow Zen), bassist Ken Dunn (Simply Southern), guitarist Ryan Kumar, up and coming vocalist Jessica Stanley and drummer Danny Waller (Simply Southern). Peacock,the product of the early '90's Philadelphia music scene, anchors this ecclectic Quintet, whose age range goes from 25 - 40. we're going by the name The Monterey Jacks. we're a three piece rock band from California. when we play live, we've done a few of the Dead's tunes (close to the only covers we do), but rehearsing we're always playing their stuff. stella blue, the eleven (which we do with zeppelin's four sticks, which is in 5 and 6... which adds up to 11!) , loser, deal, mr charlie, the other one, etc... i bought this great fender amp and about a month later learned it was a newer model very similar to something Jerry Garcia used to use. so that's kept me in a good mood for a long time. you can check us out on myspace HERE SHORELINE!!!

Dr. T of the Art Punk Band I am very interested in the answer to Brother Martin's question about covering songs. Some of you will recall, that in Sept. he asked: "Here's the thing....the fat cats have been tightening up the intellectual property laws, and I can no longer just post Beatles songs without paying some agency in New York, even though I am not selling them, just making them available for free download...I have direct agreements with Richard Thompson and with Kate Wolf's estate that it's OK for me to post my covers of their songs....is this permission implicit with the Dead's work (along with taping), or do I need to ask somebody?" I think the legal issues here are tricky. When bands sell albums with cover songs, part of the revenues go to the songwriter or company within the music industry that manages the property rights to the song. When bands perform perform cover songs at performances, or a song is played on the radio or Music services like Rhapsody or Napster, my understanding is that some revenues are provided to the songwriter as well--x cents per stream, download, etc. I think state licensing fees for musical performances might also provide revenues back to the song management company. I think the taping at Dead shows, which the band actively encouraged--and helped endear them to many a listener--is different. They chose not to exercise their (legal and potentially enforceable) rights to uses of their performances in order to encourage music sharing. In doing so, they showed listeners how they valued community over profit. It is one reason they are legends in the music world. Cover songs are numerous on Myspace and You Tube, I presume without any compensation to the songwriter--but I think a legal dispute is still on-going related to this, and who knows how this may turn out? Because of the uncertainty about this issue, my band decided to only place originals on our myspace page (myspace/artpunkband) or our You Tube page. But I would prefer to have a mix of originals and covers--we love playing Ripple, Sugaree, Uncle John's Band, US Blues, and Box of Rain, as well as a variety of Kinks, Beatles, Dylan, Neil Young covers. Copyrights do expire, and songs eventually become part of the public domain--when anyone can use--but this takes a long time, especially in the United States. In Europe, I think, copyrights expire after 50 years, but in the US copyrights remain in effect for songs written in 1923 or later. There are some exceptions when songs are placed on the public domain by the writer---and there are websites where you can look up if a song is on the Public Domain. Two songs that we cover and have recorded versions of are Shady Grove and Lord Franklin (Pentangle): these songs, I believe, were written long before 1923 and are listed as public domain songs, so we would not have concerns about using these songs. I think it is a shame that property rights on songs are enforced to this extent and remain in effect for so long. We had recorded a song "Electric Cottenfields" that was adapted from the old Ledbelly song (1941), but done with a rough electric guitar wall of sound effect. It was only about 40 seconds long--but we decided not to take a chance with copyright enfringement after seeing the copyright was still in effect. We took it off before the album was placed on line. We were going to put another song "Jet Plane Blues" on the album-- which is basically the old folk song done in a minor electric blues format--try it--you might find that this works well. But "Jet Plane" is still under copyright protection as well, so we did not include it. The copyright issue was one reason we are now participating with the Creative Commons Music Community---the music site is Jamendo.com. All music placed on line is always 100% free for streaming or downloading, and all participating musicians agree to loosen the copyright restrictions over the music they place on line to encourage sharing. Others are always free to copy, share, or cover their music. You might find some interesting music on the Jamendo site to cover. So check it out. And if you do, please listen or download (always free) our new album, "Uncommon Creations", by "The Art Punk Band" on Jamendo.com. I created a band a few months back with one of my best buddies, and we decided on a name for the band. But whoever was to be the singer in the band had there name in the un-official band name, nobody wanted to be the singer, so me playing lead guitar took up singing also. So, in about one week, Ryan Moore and the Merry Pranksters was born. Well, I have a very strange taste in music. I listen to about everything, but of course anything Dead related would be what I am most interested in. It' very hard to develop a sound that revolves around the Grateful Dead, Tool, Sunn O))), Sage Francis, Into The Moat, and other various non-relating bands. So, as we write material and record things, I intend to push the musical genre not into one direction, but what seems to be in all directions at once. We are currently recording our first song, it's coming along very smoothly and once we upload to a site I will post the link on here. Hopefully, everyone will enjoy it.

This exercise in logic started as a joke but evolved. Here's how it goes. What if - people loved your music but were afraid to come to your show? You know, because it was all thuged out like the Dead were when they first started with Hell's Angels, bare breasts, free acid, and weed. No problemo!! With today's technology, you could buy tickets over the phone or over the internet, not go to the show, and then download the show off of the internet. Just immagine if a fan wanted to show his appreciation for the iconoblasting effort of his favorite band and contributed to their well being without expecting a show. Personally, I think it would be cool to play a mostly empty stadium. Just a few bikers and such that would let me experiment with really wierd stuff so I could prepare for playing, "Space". All the people who hired me can expect is for me to get pepole to pay for tickets. As long as the money keeps rolling in it's all good . . . and people should eventually start to show up at shows. That would be way cool.

We play a variety of covers - a lot of Neil Young, some Grateful Dead, Widespread Panic, well, you get the idea. We also do some originals. Nothing serious 1-2 a month in the local bars. A few of us are trying to get a bluegrass band going. I'm playing fiddle, acoustic guitar; another's on banjo, another on guitar and mandolin. We'll see how things work out. But how does this relate to the Dead? Often "Friend of the Devil" or "I Know You Rider" and others will be played. And just last week the banjo player started in with "Lonesome Road Blues!" "Aha!" I said, I know this one, and I sang it as I've heard it so often on one of my live Dead recordings. There's a ton of Dead stuff which lends itself to a bluegrass interpretation. (And I do enjoy much of their electric stuff, too, but I just concentrate on the acoustic when I'm playing.) Indeed, at last year's California Bluegrass Campout this fine guitarist played a smooth "Ripple." Very nice. By the way, I'm new, so hello to all. Humbled

We here at Jerry Rig labs all love playing the Dead's music. We've kept this music in our lives non-stop. Here in the Pacific Northwest, we are sometimes starved for the Dead's music. This has only made us hungrier and eager to feast. Like the Dead, we do our share of cover tunes by Dylan, The Band, The Beatles, with names like Dear Prudence, Up on Cripple Creek, and Tangled up in Blue. Our bag of goodies includes about 100 songs now, including over 2 dozen originals written over the past few years. Inspired by our heroes, we stand on the shoulders of giants. Our music ranges from the airy fun of "Hey Sunshine" to downright anger expressed in "Oceans of Greed". Throw in a few original instrumental jams, like "B9" or "Tonal Solstice Calyx" and you can see it gets pretty deep in here.
