When the ride begins in '65 at a pizza parlor in the South Bay under another moniker, who would have imagined? When "Who Are You? Where Are You? How Are You?" became "Won't you come with me?" and, ultimately, "Where does the time go?," who would have thought? 60 years on, we're celebrating the Grateful Dead's Diamond Era. Here we go back to the beginning, to the original "Follow," and uncover the wonders of getting on the bus all over again.

ENJOYING THE RIDE is a sweeping 60-CD collection that maps an epic cross-country road trip along the “Heady Highway” with stops at storied venues where the music, the moment, and the magic of the Dead reliably converged. Spanning 25 years of legendary live performances, this expansive compendium spotlights defining shows from 1969 to 1994 at 20 venues that consistently inspired the band to new heights.

With the exception of a few tracks from earlier releases, virtually all of the music on ENJOYING THE RIDE is previously unreleased, with more than 450 tracks and over 60 hours of music. Of the 20 shows in the collection, 17 are presented in full, with some featuring additional material from the same venue. The remaining three — Fillmore West, Fillmore East, and Boston Music Hall — are curated from multiple performances at each venue, capturing key moments on those legendary stages.

These performances were originally recorded by Owsley “Bear” Stanley, Betty Cantor-Jackson, Kidd Candelario, Dan Healy, and John Cutler. David Glasser and Jeffrey Norman restored and mastered the performances, with select ones using Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction for optimal sound quality.

It's all housed in a custom keepsake box inspired by the experience of traveling from city to city to see the Dead at legendary venues across America. Inside, a beautifully detailed tour guide features liner notes by Jesse Jarnow (author and co-host of the Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast) and a producer’s note from Lemieux, an essay by the Owsley Stanley Foundation, and more. The set is richly illustrated with photos, including many taken at the shows featured in the collection.

Due May 30th, this one is limited to 6,000 individually numbered copies and exclusive to Dead.net. We invite you to take this not-so-little piece of the road home.

Was about to hit the button to order, but, hmh................

$ 600 plus
$ 98 shipping, plus
$ 133 VAT, 19%, plus
$ 150 (est.) tariff and fees

That makes a total of about USD 981!

You are lucky guys in the US.

1. The cassette angle (besides just making the disc count work).
2. The comment of three disks per venue would seem to indicate just one disc each from FW'69 ... makes sense on 6/8 for example, and maybe for 6/7, but would follow that 6/5 is less than complete (halved)
3. Which 3 discs from Port Chester '71? As for FE '71 dates, rights etc. re: Beach Boys may dictate chopping that out of the 27th ...
4. Lots of repeats in the 80 and 81 material - 3 discs from Alpine suggest some selection (which Sailor Saint, for example) had to be done ...
5. Cap Center would seem to have the same "what to cut problem". I could envision having the whole '93 show, plus just the 1st set from '82 w/the Playing > Fingers opener - especially from a sound quality perspective ...
6. Kaiser: Same kind of thing

Theres lots to like, and if it works out to get it I'll be very thankful. So these are less critiques and more queries for info (recognizing that the track listing element is Massive)

EDIT: The sales pitch says 17 of the 20 shows are complete ... Still, there are 29 shows listed over the 20 venues (21 w/Avalon), so the math is definitely still opaque.

For buyers of the box set, please include a CD of Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco, CA (4/5/69) in addition to the cassette. It's a fun piece of memorabilia/ephemera, but I have no cassette deck and I really want to hear this show in full fidelity!

The 6 L.P.s look the most attractive item to me in all this. If it features a song from every show in the box, it would be best if they started with the last of the 90's shows and worked back to the 69 shows. That way we might get some side long jams around Dark Star, The Other One, Caution etc.

Gerd, I agree that the costs will just keep mounting up. At least you only have to pay 19% VAT. Here in the Netherlands it is 21%. As regards import duty, according to the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration, CDs and DVDs imported from non-EU countries, such as the United States, are subject to a 0% import duty rate. I'm not totally convinced that this is the case and even if it is, what if the customs guy who gets to deal with the package is unaware of the various tariffs (I hate that word). Also it depends who it is shipped with. If it ships with UPS, there is no telling what would be levied. They totally messed up with this once before with a box set.

Intersting question in my mind's eye. Who has seen the most released shows. Guessing maybe BTK or Bolo?...

Speaking of, has bolo checked in at all recently?

I feel fortunate to have 4 show releases...Ticket to New Years...Down Hill from Here...and 89 Warlocks. Would love more for sure. As everyone here would want.

Wish I could have seen a bunch of shows BTK and especially his brother saw. Or Bolo, just getting to walk by the Human Be-In. Amazing.

The language is pretty specific in saying "20 shows" and also "20 venues". So if you just go through the list and count the venues, you come out to 20. (Don't count the cassette; Lemieux said it was a bonus). We know that 3 of the 20 'shows' will be curated sets from multiple nights at the same venue (FW East, FW West, and Boston MH) and the rest are complete. Thus, if you set those three venues aside, and then take note of the remaining duplicate venue listings, you can infer the shows that are complete and those that will be the filler. For example,

Capital Centre, Landover MD (3/17/93)
Capital Centre, Landover MD (9/15/82)

I'd read this as the '93 show is complete with filler from the '82 show. (Otherwise, why not list the earlier show first?)

And therefore,

Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center, Oakland, CA (11/21/85)
Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center, Oakland, CA (11/22/85)

Means we're getting the show from the 21st with filler from the show on the 22nd.

That's how I'm interpreting this presentation, anyway

He mentions 8.23.80 as the stand alone Alpine show - meaning the selections added are from '81. Also confirming re Kaiser: 11/21/85 is (pretty naturally) the full show, with selections from 11/22 ... there might have been another confirmed within the 20 minutes?
Edit: Order of Cap Ctr. that Obeah just gave makes sense also.

Tariffs would not be that high.
Guess total for the box would be around USD 840.
Sorry about that.

Got that DM off to you.
Yep, Nak Dragons are still the big kahuna but are tough to restore so I've seen them in the $2000-$5000 range. Too rich for my blood. I paid $175+shipping for a fully restored 1982 Teac V-5RX that is killer. Never had better sound and I have used three Teacs, a Nakamichi 600, a Pioneer CT-F series deck, and some basic Sharp and Sony decks.

Check the LP track list, which is up now. They seem to have made a fantasy set list like a whole show out of it, and it is not in chronologic order. I think I like that idea at least for this offering. I'm leaning toward the LPs as well.

Will they publish a tracklist for this whole box set? Curious to see which shows are complete, and what songs got left out. Numerous potential Dark Stars, but that's not always a priority for TPTB . . .

As usual, I laid my money down for the annual set. I love that this box is leaning more towards the 80s and 90s.

Is anyone else finding the show listing confusing on this one? One show per venue, right? 17 complete shows with 28-29 shows listed. I get that Fillmore's and Boston Music Hall shows are compilations...but Cap Centre for instance, which show are we getting? Is this 3/17/93 with filler from 9/15/82? Likewise Kaiser '85 and Alpine Valley '80 & '81?

Kinda strange that they are giving the filler material equal billing.

Edit: Just now seeing other posts with the same questions.

I'm guessing the curated shows may be due to other groups that appeared with the band on those dates. For example the 4/27/71 show at Filmore East The Beach Boys shared the stage. I assume they can't include those songs w/o their permission. As for 4/25/71 it might be NRPS, but not sure.

A DaP getting lost is bad enough!
PLEASE, tell us how it will be shipped so we can address it correctly…

As far as the box, varied and mixed feelings like usual lol, but would order if I knew how it was getting shipped!
Otherwise, we’ll have to digest this feast before Futhur commenting…
Like 8/12/79 instead of 8/13 with “HFS” Shakedown…oh, guess that’s the only RR show available? I’ll prolly have more lol, PADH (picky ass DH) lol
Glad some folks are getting shows they were at, can’t believe outta this huge box I’m getting nada…major bummer : )

I thought I couldn't resist buying this, until I saw the absurd number of 80's and 90's shows. Blah. Every show from 77 and before is better than ANY show after 78. Way too much emphasis on phoning it in and too much Weir predominating since Jerry was sickly for most of the 80's and 90's. Weir got way to weird and predominant in the later years, with all his screeching dumb ass vocals. I hate to pass up the earlier shows in this set, but it's too much money considering all the mediocre shows in the set. They should do two separate sets - 60's and 70's in one and 80's and 90's in the other.

Feel like the show selection is a lot like Boxilla. All good, but perhaps several shows that might not have been put out otherwise? And definitely just filling holes in some cases as one could strongly suggest many from those years or the venue that are much better.
So with that, thoughts based on listening…
4/5/69 best show of run, so why cassette? Glad I have one.
June 69 head scartcher. Obviously many better 69s (see above)
Hopefully get Dark Stars!
2/20&24/71 many better 71, but hopefully they used the sweet multitracks!
9/15&16/72 love the 16th, haven’t heard the 15
3/13/73 sweet DS/Jam!
3/20/77 haven’t heard, but historically/preferentially would have gone 3/18
5/13/78 only second was available. Thought it decent but…hole filler, neighbor of Boxilla show
8/12/79 already discussed
8/23/30 ? Hmm, “need better listen” in my notes
7/11/81 haven’t heard
3/14/81 Boo! 7 and 13 way better, perhaps the 6 and 12 too headscatcher
I know, it’s because of the venues…so how bout 10/15/83 for example?
5/1/81 haven’t heard
8/20/83 aw-ight?
7/13/84 finally!
11/21&22/85 haven’t heard in long time, have second on tape, Good show
No 86? 3/24/86 would have been perfect for this!
9/16/87 dug it when DV suggested on POTD! Boxilla neighbor
88?
7/15/89 good, not great show, the Venue again…? Hmmm?
12/27/89 wonder if it’s multi? Been on Dave’s list that doesn’t exist
5/12/91 I liked it on POTD!
3/17/83 Awesome 93 show! Seriously good sheet!
10/3/94 great choice, prolly second best (of a good run) only to 10/1 Boxilla

Well, it’s definitely a interesting box. Certainly will keep us busy for awhile!
Don’t let my critical thinking damper my enthusiasm, just a bad habit lol
Thanks to Dave and company! Look forward, just hope we get it 🤞

which 8?

I was talking to another poster on here over the weekend. We were discussing the "holier than thou heads." We came to the conclusion that if Jerry is tearing it up and smiling, the problem is not our problem but yours.

Easiest way to distill a fun, interesting, lengthy conversation. Most of which had a lot of years, shows, venues where we saw shows. He was primarily a NE tour head, me being more cross country. Fun stuff indeed!

Of course, not to offend any one.

Thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately, and not wishing to be negative in these troubled times, but the tracks on the L.P. don't really excite me much. Only one track from 1969 - and although the one chosen, Doin' That Rag is a fine song, it's not a song I would have chosen as the best sole representative of this great year.
The side with Playin' from 1973 apart, none of the sides look really great. I'm not sure how satisfying it will be jumping from one year to another on one side of an L.P.
And that side featuring both Black Muddy River and Days Between looks very unappetizing. I might be old...but I'm not THAT old !
So, I don't think I'll be buying either the box or the compilations. Money that can go on other great records!

Nice write-up. I thoroughly enjoy 30TATS/Boxilla but like you agree that some pics might be best way to get them out. Now trying to work my budget numbers. It's gimme gimme for me, can brother get a discount?

Peace to the family!

The only reason I'm thinking about getting this is because it includes my first show, 3/16/73. I already have a SBD recording of this, though, although there is noticeable distortion throughout the show, mostly on vocals. I wonder if that's been eliminated on this version. I can't tell from the Bird Song that's included in the listening party.

This is expensive at first glance, but my order came to $660.97, which comes to just over $11.00 per disc. And that doesn’t include the box and artwork. So since I have purchased every single box set they have ever released, I just knew that I would regret not buying this one.

It’s more money than I should be spending right now, but I just couldn’t afford to miss out in case it sells out. Although at this price point, I would imagine it may take awhile.

You only live once, and you can’t take it with you, so goodbye savings account.

....where are my SAM BOYD SHOWS!
I know they had guests, but not EVERY show. And there were fourteen of them for dangs sake.
Well. I got a Santa Fe show.
That reminds me, why not include the rest of 9.10.83??

Hi All!
Its been a few minutes for me. I have lurked but not commented much in recent months as life continues to throw some curve balls my way. However this box announcement brought me out.

So I have to say that I like the concept of this box being about venues and not a chronological grouping of one show per every year in the band's existence. That worked well for 30TATS box, so it is nice that Dave departed from that. Also, I generally like the variety of years/eras in this box as well. On the surface this box gives a nice collection of shows a that spans that bands history (mostly) from great venues. I almost pulled the trigger on this as soon as I saw the announcement.

Thankfully I did not let excitement, impulsivity, and inattention to detail get the better of me. Thanks to several of you in the comments, I finally caught on that not all of these are complete shows. Now that is not necessarily a requirement for me these days, but a massive box with a huge price tag (before shipping) influences that. When I further understood that some selections were compilations from multiple shows and there are shows with filler added to them, I put my credit card down.

The deal breaker for me (at least right now) is that we don't have a tracklist. If I could see what we are getting from the compilations and filler that could help , at least for me. I think we can all take some educated guesses for some of the tracks that could be included and excluded. Still that doesn't always play out they way we may think.

I did a good lookover of the shows in this box. There are some standout shows, some shows that look interesting, and others I am not too thrilled about. Again not knowing what we are getting for some of those shows is an issue for me. I also did some digging and thanks to Dave L. he has put out a surprising number of tracks from several of these shows in the 30 Days of Dead over the years. Thankfully I have downloaded all of that so that is a bonus.

Dave L and this crew have given us so much so I can't complain and I am not doing that here. I think for my tastes, many, but certainly not all of the top notch shows in the band's history have been released at this point. I bought the Rhythm Devils box and to be truthful it really didn't do much for me. I skipped on the MSG box too as that did not peak my interest. So for me there, is not enough to entice me in this box other than what the kids these days say which is FOMO- fear of missing out.

I am likely going to pass on this one, and maybe I will buy the 3 disc compilation as there are some nuggets in there. I may be inclined to buy a single show (3/16/73, 7/13/84 are a few) on the secondary eBay market for a reasonable price if available. For those that do get this box, definitely enjoy the ride and I am looking forward to the reviews.

Nice work!

Yes, these purchases are hard to explain to the wives, well unless you are Dennis.

Broke the news to my wife tonight that the 2025 box was announced today. 20 shows on 60 CDs. The response, "Wow, that is a lot of CDs. How much? A few hundred dollars. How much is a few hundred dollars? Well, $599. Wow, that is more than a few hundred dollars. Yes, it is, but it is worth it. Just think how much we are saving if I try to buy a couple years from now?

So cool! And with a sealed box the seller wouldn't even know about that Miracle/6000!! Would love to know the backstory on how this was distributed.

Went on to the 7/11/81 Alpine Set II partial from ETR and then tracked down the rest of Set II - Stella Blue > Miracle > Going Down the Road > Saturday Night. E: Brokedown. Only circulates as an audience - listened to the recent CM remaster which uses an audience source after Other One. A solid pull of a hot show. Stella sounded awesome.

    Prize? Happy Will's Miracle/6000

Was it meant to be a prize for the 30 Days of Dead 2025?
Speaking of that, anyone actually get their prize yet?
Inquiring minds want to know as they have stiffed, or shall we say had trouble connecting with, some winners in the past according to posts.
    Cheers

8/23/80 is a fine show - of course the first at Alpine which quickly became a classic summer shed in the Midwest. Slightly on the short side - they had a show the next night in Grand Rapids so maybe thinking a bit of travel time. Like Alpine until ETR, no circulating SBD of GR but I seem to remember a very nice audience pull being available and its a great show. Alpine was right on the heels of three hot nights at the Uptown (friend there, I missed.) Long thought that the first night of that run should be released but the circulating SBD is sorta lousy so who knows. And of course that summer '80 tour started out with the legendary Mississippi River Festival show on 8/16. From the reviews, show got hit by a real frog choker rain Set II and was very much electric. No SBD for that either - would love to hear that if it survived the deluge.

Edit - been a long while since I've posted on the ETR thread and I want to say I really have enjoyed this box!

    Yesterday's ETR Listen

The Alpine Valley 8-23-80 (BC's 4th show he said) was a really good show. Solid most of the way through but maybe not amazing? Then wham, that ending series of songs just kept getting more supercharged. Must have left you guys smiling walking out BC.
But I'm here to rave about Hampton 5-1-81. Yes, I was under the influence by then late yesterday but I was completely taken aback by Jerry's wicked speed and accuracy. We all know he got faster as he went along but by the 90s there just wasn't as much in those runs as there used to be. But here in '81 he has it all. Every riff in the book on that Promised Land (GOAT? Certainly top 10), and the Uncle and Big River blew me away. It isn't just the speed and accuracy but all those mini fills and chords just cascading endlessly. I don't think I realized he had that in '81. This is why we all check out every show we can, regardless of era. You just never know when something like that will appear. Man he was on!

I missed out Enjoying the Ride as it sold out so quickly, but have jnow ust picked up a sealed set to find out the limited edition number is Miracle/6000. Can anyone tell me what this means please? I am assuming it was a promo copy that has been flipped. And is there a download of the Cassette? I got rid of my tape deck 20 years ago>
