When the ride begins in '65 at a pizza parlor in the South Bay under another moniker, who would have imagined? When "Who Are You? Where Are You? How Are You?" became "Won't you come with me?" and, ultimately, "Where does the time go?," who would have thought? 60 years on, we're celebrating the Grateful Dead's Diamond Era. Here we go back to the beginning, to the original "Follow," and uncover the wonders of getting on the bus all over again.

ENJOYING THE RIDE is a sweeping 60-CD collection that maps an epic cross-country road trip along the “Heady Highway” with stops at storied venues where the music, the moment, and the magic of the Dead reliably converged. Spanning 25 years of legendary live performances, this expansive compendium spotlights defining shows from 1969 to 1994 at 20 venues that consistently inspired the band to new heights.

With the exception of a few tracks from earlier releases, virtually all of the music on ENJOYING THE RIDE is previously unreleased, with more than 450 tracks and over 60 hours of music. Of the 20 shows in the collection, 17 are presented in full, with some featuring additional material from the same venue. The remaining three — Fillmore West, Fillmore East, and Boston Music Hall — are curated from multiple performances at each venue, capturing key moments on those legendary stages.

These performances were originally recorded by Owsley “Bear” Stanley, Betty Cantor-Jackson, Kidd Candelario, Dan Healy, and John Cutler. David Glasser and Jeffrey Norman restored and mastered the performances, with select ones using Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction for optimal sound quality.

It's all housed in a custom keepsake box inspired by the experience of traveling from city to city to see the Dead at legendary venues across America. Inside, a beautifully detailed tour guide features liner notes by Jesse Jarnow (author and co-host of the Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast) and a producer’s note from Lemieux, an essay by the Owsley Stanley Foundation, and more. The set is richly illustrated with photos, including many taken at the shows featured in the collection.

Due May 30th, this one is limited to 6,000 individually numbered copies and exclusive to Dead.net. We invite you to take this not-so-little piece of the road home.

Discussing it with Mrs. Wiss & finding out today that some very lucrative OT is coming in April I decided to purchase Mothra. At least now I won't have to wake up in a cold sweat to see if it SOLD OUT yet. Now that is peace of a DEAD mind.

Now that there is a 3-D photo up of this box I can truly catch the essence. This really is an elegantly crafted kinda 'old school' handsome piece of craftwork. Though I had liked the fire branded wood shown initially, admittedly I had expected to see more decorative wood searing elsewhere and I'm surprised at the overall demure nature of the anniversary box.
Don't get me wrong now the new box looks of seriously excellent quality, like it should have a velvet lined interior and a couple of dueling pistols inside! The latch itself looks like the style of an old timey tool box, the kind my grandpa's special tools came in! So I dig it for sure and think it would look great on any shelf, the naked wood grain & stain is so artisan & old worldly. Elegantly plain & plain elegance, only just it's so subtle in style. At least compared to all the other technicolor Big Boxes I own. I don't have the 30Trips Boxilla but the seasonal motif all around the outside of the whole thing really was cool, I've recently looked at some photos of it up close on line.
Well, count down now till release day!

If only the box was made of real wood rather than faux-wood.
I guess you can't have it all for $600.

35 years ago - starting today, The GD ended their tour with 3 great shows at The Omni; the first night has a first set "To Lay Me Down" , a lovely "Stella" and a nice "Baby Blue"..

Starting playing that in the car this morning.
Will take a few days of commutes to finish the show.

... meaning temperature-wise. Ouch, I got fried (in more ways than one). Got The Race is On, H-S-F, Loose Lucy, along with other goodies. Personally, I really enjoyed the 2nd day. It was cooler, I got a better spot than Sat., and a lot of folks left around Drums. So, at the end + encore, I was able to be 5-10 feet from the stage on the right side.

High 5s to you too VGuy

I mean the actual Mothra, with a side of Godzilla.

JimInMD thank you for mentioning one of my all-time favorite monsters (Godzilla) and one of the only worthy nemeses: good old Mothra. To me, the relatively crude special effects are so much more fun than the faux realism (if you will) of, say, Jurassic Park and subsequent movies, including any modern remakes of the Zilla series. Give me Tokyo and Raymond Burr, tiny model ships and trains and a guy in a Zilla suit anyday!

I have to cast my mind back to another fave, "Plan 9 From Outer Space" by the inimitable (thank the gods there was only one) Ed Wood. One of the best parts is seeing the "flying saucer," which is an actual tea saucer, dangling by a visible fishing line, and wobbling rather than spinning.

The only way to tie off this ultra-inane posting and connect it to the GD is to note that, at many shows, there was a surfeit of "wobbling" and "spinning," some of it only in my mind. Yes, those were the good shows.

But as long as I'm on a roll (again, in my mind), I might mention a couple other wonderfully crude films that were so bad they were good:

Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (see what I did there??)
The Crawling Eye (not the flying eyeball...)

Hmmm... there's one other that escapes me and, besides, it's time to crack a cold one...

Cheers from the high plains and cold rain and snow, HF

Reckoning was released 44 years ago today, what a fantastic record! The acoustic shows I saw at the Warfield theatre were super cool!

I believe we get another pick by the end of the month. Yeehaw! And it is a March 73 show.

What will they do for the this year's MUATM?

Love the Reckoning release. Actually still have the Vinyl release that was titled For the Faithful.

In the past two years also picked up the expanded Reckoning release on two CDs. Great release.

HF - I also like that - and that approach to film making over the big Hollywood blockbusters with computer generated special effects and celebrity actors. My favourite of those independent horror films is "Blood Feast" by Herschell Gordon Lewis. There was an incredible box set of his films released a few years ago simply titled "Feast". Give me inspiration over professionalism every time. Which was pretty much The Dead's attitude to live shows - he says, keeping it relevant.

Also a thumbs up for "Reckoning". That cd with the extra disc is great - and Warfield shows on 8th and 9th October - an RSD release - are also top draw.

John Carpenter directed and co-wrote this with Dan O'Bannon when they were Film Students at USC.

I took a Science Fiction class in College which we read some great SciFi stories and books and compared and contrasted them to the film version (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep vs. Blade Runner). It was a great class and the last film we watched was Dark Star, which was hilarious.

Talk about campy - the mission of the crew was to blow up unstable planets. The space alien mascot looked like a beachball and when they tried to tranquilize it, it flew around like a balloon getting deflated... Lt. Doolittle is a former surfer that lives up to his name when he's in charge, but in his demise he surfs down to a planet to die as a falling star... Movie is a ripoff of a Ray Bradbury story Kaleidoscope with what appears to be influences of 2001 Space Odessey and one wonders if Douglass Adams got the premise of the Hitchhiker's Guide (blowing up unstable planets) from this movie, but I doubt it...

$42.85 per disc? Must be a nice coffee table book in there. Or maybe a wave drum. Or a full set of Gretsch drums in the rare champagne metallic finish. Hope there is no tariff added, lol.

I just got the word. They will screen Godzilla vs. Mothra and the soundtrack will be Fillmore West 69, punctuated by the two monsters' screams. And it's gonna loop, all day long. BYON ... bring your own nitrous...

That may spark a screening here tonight of a few Ray Harryhausen films, including "Earth vs the Flying Saucers" (spoiler alert: we lose), and "20 Million Miles to Earth" (amphibious Godzilla knock-off grabs '50s MILF). Or do I go to the more timely Ed Wood movie, "Glen or Glenda"?

Decisions, decisions, ta ta, HF

Comes with a replacement spouse for the one that leaves you for buying $45 disc!

I remember Ultraman. What about the other cheesy horror flicks like creature from the black lagoon. I must have watched that when I was very little, because it actually scared me. There was some cheesy special effects in the 60's. HR Pufnstuff, on the other hand, was classic.

What the hey is going on? I know, there's another thread for that. Maybe I will try and dig it up.

Must be a market thing, never even heard of it in the NY area.
Horror stuff - We had on Saturday nights we had John Zacherle. He did a Svengoolie type show. Seem to morph into Chiller Theater. For a while on Wednesday, local station at 430 was showing all those cheesy horror/monster movies. Yes, the Crawling Eye with Sargent O'Roake from F-Troop :-) I was never much for the Godzilla type stuff, certainly watched over dinner in our house. Didn't Mothra have the 2 small girls in a cage who sang to sooth Mothra? There was a 68 movie DAM, Destroy All Monsters, if I remember right, it had all those Jap monsters in it!

One of my favs from kid days, the 8th man, tobor. Was never sure about Gigantor. Little jimmy had that box with two antennas and two handles. He seem to randomly move the handles, while at the same time was telling the robot what to do! Was the robot voice controlled, or controller controlled? One last thing, which I assume any real Godzilla fan knows. Raymond Burr (Perry Mason) was added after the movie was out in Japan for two years.

Thanks. I have both of the albums you mention. They’re very good. I’m sure I’ve got several others but my cd collection is in a mixed up mess. I must get round to sorting them out.

Creature Double Feature rocked my world. Of course one needed Channel 38 on UHF to watch the Sox.

Great times. Musically we had WBCN- a great one time force in radio. What I wouldn’t give to have one of those mid 70’ Saturday afternoons back now.

Thanks for the shout out. From a one-time Masshole who remembers it well!

Listening to 3-22-73 Utica at the moment. Great second set!

Don't forget about 94.5 WCOZ - classic rock in late 70's early 80's before classic rock stations like WZLX and before they flipped to pop40 WZOU. In high school used to go for a station tour a few times a year to score those prism-y bumper stickers over on Stuart Street by the Hancock buildings...

I've been way more excited about the last few box sets, but this one? Meh. Sure, there are some must-have shows, but they’re sandwiched between a few real clunkers—feels like Bobby’s got a tuition bill due. No hard feelings, but they could’ve put together a stronger theme. Even tossing in a bonus show for preorders would’ve softened the blow. That said, I’m grateful I can swing the purchase. Still holding out hope for a 1974 farewell run box—I'd love to get 11/16/74 in multitrack glory.

Lotta great radio stations in Boston in the day. Think WBCN started broadcasting out of the Boston Tea Party. Peter Wolf was an early DJ there. Jerry did some interviews there early on. WCOZ was pure rock—no post-punk or new wave playing around. Listened plenty there as well.

I miss local radio and regional music scenes….All gone now…

God, I hope they ship the boxes from the EU..

While I was flipping through some ancient albums in a market this afternoon I noticed a slim tray of new cds. In that tray was "Fathers and Sons" featuring Muddy, Otis Span, Michael Bloomfield, Buddy miles etc (according to the cover) Mine for £3.00. I have heard this many moons ago, and although I haven't played this one I've just bought yet, my memory is that it is a good 'un.

I watched the online video of the Duke show years ago, so then wondered if they might match it with the SBD and make it part of a release, if Duke were ever released. They didn't, but I was just finishing up the Duke show this morning (taking my sweet time going through that box), wondering if perhaps they were going to match the video with the dusted-off SBD for this year's MUATM.

Be kind, rewind

Went on to the 7/11/81 Alpine Set II partial from ETR and then tracked down the rest of Set II - Stella Blue > Miracle > Going Down the Road > Saturday Night. E: Brokedown. Only circulates as an audience - listened to the recent CM remaster which uses an audience source after Other One. A solid pull of a hot show. Stella sounded awesome.

8/23/80 is a fine show - of course the first at Alpine which quickly became a classic summer shed in the Midwest. Slightly on the short side - they had a show the next night in Grand Rapids so maybe thinking a bit of travel time. Like Alpine until ETR, no circulating SBD of GR but I seem to remember a very nice audience pull being available and its a great show. Alpine was right on the heels of three hot nights at the Uptown (friend there, I missed.) Long thought that the first night of that run should be released but the circulating SBD is sorta lousy so who knows. And of course that summer '80 tour started out with the legendary Mississippi River Festival show on 8/16. From the reviews, show got hit by a real frog choker rain Set II and was very much electric. No SBD for that either - would love to hear that if it survived the deluge.
    -
Edit - been a long while since I've posted on the ETR thread and I want to say I really have enjoyed this box!

    Yesterday's ETR Listen

The Alpine Valley 8-23-80 (BC's 4th show he said) was a really good show. Solid most of the way through but maybe not amazing? Then wham, that ending series of songs just kept getting more supercharged. Must have left you guys smiling walking out BC.
But I'm here to rave about Hampton 5-1-81. Yes, I was under the influence by then late yesterday but I was completely taken aback by Jerry's wicked speed and accuracy. We all know he got faster as he went along but by the 90s there just wasn't as much in those runs as there used to be. But here in '81 he has it all. Every riff in the book on that Promised Land (GOAT? Certainly top 10), and the Uncle and Big River blew me away. It isn't just the speed and accuracy but all those mini fills and chords just cascading endlessly. I don't think I realized he had that in '81. This is why we all check out every show we can, regardless of era. You just never know when something like that will appear. Man he was on!
