When the ride begins in '65 at a pizza parlor in the South Bay under another moniker, who would have imagined? When "Who Are You? Where Are You? How Are You?" became "Won't you come with me?" and, ultimately, "Where does the time go?," who would have thought? 60 years on, we're celebrating the Grateful Dead's Diamond Era. Here we go back to the beginning, to the original "Follow," and uncover the wonders of getting on the bus all over again.

ENJOYING THE RIDE is a sweeping 60-CD collection that maps an epic cross-country road trip along the “Heady Highway” with stops at storied venues where the music, the moment, and the magic of the Dead reliably converged. Spanning 25 years of legendary live performances, this expansive compendium spotlights defining shows from 1969 to 1994 at 20 venues that consistently inspired the band to new heights.

With the exception of a few tracks from earlier releases, virtually all of the music on ENJOYING THE RIDE is previously unreleased, with more than 450 tracks and over 60 hours of music. Of the 20 shows in the collection, 17 are presented in full, with some featuring additional material from the same venue. The remaining three — Fillmore West, Fillmore East, and Boston Music Hall — are curated from multiple performances at each venue, capturing key moments on those legendary stages.

These performances were originally recorded by Owsley “Bear” Stanley, Betty Cantor-Jackson, Kidd Candelario, Dan Healy, and John Cutler. David Glasser and Jeffrey Norman restored and mastered the performances, with select ones using Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction for optimal sound quality.

It's all housed in a custom keepsake box inspired by the experience of traveling from city to city to see the Dead at legendary venues across America. Inside, a beautifully detailed tour guide features liner notes by Jesse Jarnow (author and co-host of the Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast) and a producer’s note from Lemieux, an essay by the Owsley Stanley Foundation, and more. The set is richly illustrated with photos, including many taken at the shows featured in the collection.

Due May 30th, this one is limited to 6,000 individually numbered copies and exclusive to Dead.net. We invite you to take this not-so-little piece of the road home.

Enough with lame questions. Enough with not my cup of shows. Enough with what is a cassette and what would I do to myself with it.

If you're a gambler at this table, are you in or out? Real men go the distance for tour.

My personal story. I was jammed up. Lost in vines, Archive, Dick's, Dave's, pirate's bay, Chilean connections. A dark yet sublime way of being.

Then I saw I could have an 85' show in pristine crystallized premium sound. Beyond , beyond. I need more shows.

I put up. I said the heck with that rational reasoning of my upbringing. I'm always living now with this thing. I need more shows.

I am more human than human. I have Kaiser 85'

Thanks! I didn't see it mentioned in the notes on this release, but nearly all past official GD releases, starting I believe with Dick's Picks 15 in 1999 have been HDCD. It's actually hard to find an HDCD player these days, but my Oppo is still hangin' on. To my ears, it does improve the sound.

Up top: they really, really need to release more JGB, especially the 80’s era. Didn’t get to catch that many shows compared to a lot of Keystone in the 70s. Just found an unopened copy of “All Good Things” for half what it usually is, to me this is spectacular, as well as the “rare’ (overpriced) “Redux”. I’d prefer to see stuff like this, the truly unreleased.

But this: set Another grab? Well, nice if you don’t have many shows, or you find this to be higher quality , which would be the expectation. Changing CDs in the middle of a good show is a lot like having to get up to flip an LP, worse, even. And I ran down the list, I found I’d downloaded all but one or two of the shows. And then the 90s, which are mostly heartbreaking.

I’m happy with the quality I’ve found, but I’d be curious to hear how many shows were superior recordings comparatively. And a cassette? I lost everything in a fire awhile back, never replaced the sound system and I don’t feel hunting one down is worth it just for one show and nostalgia. I’d guess a lot of folks have never seen one. So that’s nice of them. I’d end up ripping them to put on an iPod, so the quality is moot.

Yeah I have been wishing for awhile they would release more than just one show a year. In years not too long past they've done two releases a year, except for a few years where there was none(2015), one(2018), & even three(2020). Last two years there has been only one release, damn good ones though.
I agree with the last commenters opinion of more Melvin Seals 1980s shows, I would love to see some 1983~'84. They should also revisit Ozzie's era which was Volume One, but do a December 1979 show with an 'After Midnight' sans the Eleanor Rigby jam.
Also a July 1977 JGB show with Keith & Donna would be way cool.

Maybe someday that band jammed.

Yes, some of the shows in this box are not complete.. but since the missing reels either do not exist or were damaged, I believe they are as complete as they are ever going to be.

Or as George Harrison would say, isn't it a pity.

Worth remembering that this box focuses on venues, not complete shows, with one three disc set covering each of the twenty venues (plus the cassette from the Avalon). Prior to this box, three of the six shows from the Capitol Theatre run had been released. It's not possible to fit two of the unreleased shows on three discs, so they've gone with one and a half. My guess is that we'll get the remaining show and a half on a Dave's picks someday.

Also, I believe I'm right in saying that the tracks missing from both of the two Fillmore East shows appear on Ladies And Gentlemen The Grateful Dead.

Something told me to finagle a few loose ends or a bit of 'Shakedown Street' this and that, yada yadda, because I would be flush with cash soon enough. Damn! Glad I did what & when I had to do to make this happen. There were still some for pre~order here as of last night.

Doesn’t mean sold out.

It just means that they misplaced some of them. They will ‘find’ the ‘missing’ Boxes at some point and send an email saying “hey, we found some additional Box Sets”.

The unboxing video demonstrates that they already have the product in hand, so Might As Well start shipping now.

I'm just going to assume that 'out of stock' means 'sold out.' I can't see any reason they would stop taking orders unless they were actually out of stock. That's not to say they don't have a few dozen stashed away for archival purposes and whatnot. Maybe they'll even sell a few of those, eventually. But basically, this baby's sold out.

Which is pretty danged impressive, given that it cost $600 (closer to $700 with tax and shipping, even more for non-US buyers). And considering that 6,000 copies of anything in physical media is a lot these days. This is an era when somebody can top the Billboard charts with 10,000 in sales (and that's counting streaming, which they factor in somehow), so selling 6,000 copies of physical media with a $600 list price is kind of amazing.

Anyway, glad I snagged one. I hemmed and hawed and listed all the good reasons NOT to spend $700-ish, especially right now, at a time when (how can I put, so as to avoid getting political?) there's a lot of uncertainty about the economy. But eventually I caved. Because I need more shows, obviously.

It says both on the same page. It says "sold out" over the pictures of the thing then it says "out of stock" further down the page. Both mean that it cannot be ordered.

6,000 x $599 = $3,594,000.
Hefty.

Those that have received past box sets, did it ship to arrive on the release date or some date thereafter? I happen to live in the same city that they ship dead.net items from. When I placed my first order ever in March for 2 box sets they arrived essentially overnight.

A new friend was over the other day, and I was talking about this box set and how it would have a cassette. We talked about the old cassette days, and when I lamented my current lack of a cassette deck he said, "Well . . . why don't you just bring that cassette over when it arrives, then we'll listen to it on the cassette deck I use all the time?" So now I'm very excited to receive this cassette, as those pieces of plastic often meant a communal listening party and/or sharing of music when one got some new tapes. Cool idea, Dave!

Along those lines, it turns out that this new friend (who is somewhat new to town) had already met another newer friend of mine who owns a record player. I purchased the Garcia "Heads and Tails" LP even though I have no record player, just to take over to do some communal listening on the LP friend's stereo.

Hi All,
Well I am relieved that this sold out. After the track list was put up and I took a good look, I really did want to pull the trigger on this one. On at least 3 occasions I put this box in my cart but I never checked out. I kept holding off because along with my usual trip to Vegas for the Master World brazilian jui jitsu competition this summer, I have a few other competitions in the works plus a trip to Japan later in this year. I couldn't quite afford the cost with all of the travel. Yet the longer this box would have stayed in stock, I may have still caved in.

I may just pick up the 3 CD compilation. Thankfully Dave has given us a scattering of some of these songs in the 30 Days of Dead series over the years too. That should be enough to keep me satisfied. For those that ordered this box, I am sure you will enjoy it.

I guess this is not too crazy, but I have already seen this box up on the secondary eBay market with a $1200 price tag. I am sure in time there will be sellers with individual shows up for sale too, but I can envision those going for a few hundred bucks if not more. So this is definitely not a box set to try to get whole or even in parts on the secondary market. I feel bad for those that missed out but at least there is the digital option.

I have only been downloading the whole month of "30 Days of Dead" for about five years now, the same time I've been a Dave's subscriber. I am starting to get the gist that one can almost predict what Dave might release & where he might go next to pick from that list. For either for a Big Box set or his namesake series. After reading the last commentator's post I am even more convinced in my suspicions. The 1976 DaP #53 had a couple songs featured from the 30 Dead Days Downloads.
Well, Anyways,.... I've been predicting a 1982 show and a Vince era (1991?) pick for a year or so now and still feel there are good odds of them years hitting. Though now, I am starting to wonder if Dave may shock us with a more obscure year for release. Possibly 1986!?
There was a nice release for that year in the 30 Dead Days from 2024. Apparently there are some quite decent shows from the pre~coma side of that year, mostly Spring Tour. The folks in the DaP#54 chat had said a little bit about it.

Hey baltimoron917, Bummer brother. I wondered about a "notify me when available" link too, but there's not one (so far anyway). As you probably know, don't count on it, but every now and then they "find" more copies/boxes and they become available for a blink of the eye until they get scarfed up. If all else fails, there's always the FLAC and ALAC downloads - think of the shelf-space you'll save (plus a couple hundred smackers). Fingers crossed. Onward.

Can ride this wave out just like they did with E72-TCR by releasing each show individually OR release an all music edition on CD. I may have to go to eBay and pay the piper to enjoy the ride. Of course my finances look much brighter now after it sells out.

I was just scanning the store and was shocked to see that the MSG Box is still available. There's so much good music on that one! I suppose 12,500 copies is a lot but I would think it would have sold out long ago.

I remember being equally suprised when the July '78 box (one of my faviorte boxes!) stuck around for a couple of years before selling out. Since it's release, the Arrowhead Stadium show from this box might be the show I've listed to more than any other. So well played from start to finish.

I betchya that Garden Box sells out by autumn, that would be about three years. About the same time it took the PNw & River Boxes to sell out. Maybe a bit sooner for any Brent era aficionado Dead Heads that don't have it yet & missed out on the 60th Ride Box. I own the MSG Box personally and totally recommend it! Musically it's awesome, though fits weird on the shelf but looks hella cool.
I remember the 1976 Box & the Meadowlands Box selling fairly quick, like within a year but I was not on the bus at that point. Just still trying to score Dave's Picks a'la carte unsuccessfully because I wasn't totally in the online loop. Finally I subscribed, then they started doing pre~orders on Dave's about the second year or so if I recall correct.
Anyways,... I am wondering if this ~60th~ was the first Big Box in the pre~order era to sell out before release date, & a month before no less! I recall the Sunshine Box selling out the day of release on the Dead.net site, what a trip!

They have definitely self corrected twice. The Europe and Cornell boxes sold out really fast and they came out with the All Music Editions.

Maybe that happens again here if they're feeling like they left some $$ in the table.

Not sure what it was when released, but good price for number of disc divided by cost.

I never got when it came out, my buddy slipped me a copy.

And NO, I didn't need to spend 200 bucks :-)

I think they should've done a run of 6,478. Or maybe 6,479.

It's gotta be hard for TPTB to decide how copies of these limited edition boxes to do. Especially a big expensive one like this, when every 1,000 copies you do puts another $600,000 in play.

Probably they try to err on the side of caution. You don't want to do a run of 10,000, and sell 6,478, and wind up with more than $2 million worth sitting in the warehouse, I imagine. Better, from the TPTB's POV to do 6,000 and sell 'em all right away, I'm thinking.

Which doesn't solve the problem for our friends who weren't able to get their orders in before this one sold. But I'd be willing to bet we see some of these shows issued separately, maybe as RSD vinyl. And I wouldn't be surprised to see a 'music only' edition like they did with GSTL. So all is not lost. But it's gonna take some time.

user picture

GSTL was a much smaller box (11 discs) and the initial run of15,000 sold out in, literally hours. Europe 72 box was comparable to this one (73 discs) and the initial run of 7,200 sold out in four days. We're nowhere near that demand here. It's taken a little shy of two months to sell out 6000 of these, and that takes us to just over three weeks to go until release. That feels about right to me. It's sad that some folks appear to have missed out, and I hope they manage to picks one up at a reasonable price, but on the basis of the comments we see here, it would be hard to argue there is significant unfulfilled demand.

Agree that we'll probably see a couple of shows released individually on vinyl for RSD, but I think I'm right in saying they only released two of the 30 Trips shows individually, 1967 and 1977. Not sure we'll see an all music edition of this though.

I didn't know this show from 30 Trips had come out on vinyl. Obviously not paying attention. Not having bought the box, I suddenly feel tempted to up my Dead levels by buying that 1971 release from Scranton that came out recently.

Agree. I hate the wait. You've paid your money, send the stuff!

On that note,,,,,

I ordered New Years Eve Cow Palace from Experience Vinyl. I think I'm getting burned again on the wait front. If I bought this from Amazon I'd have it already (they send day of release). You try and spread you're buying around, don't need to send it all to Jeff, but I get it release day, no shipping. Still no word from Experience, not even sent yet!

Come on Experience!

Been asking, pleading, begging, cajoling, bitching, complaining and other forms of persuasion short of please o pretty please with sugar on top , FOR 2 MONTHS, just trying to get a simple answer about how the box is getting shipped!
Now since they already took our money for the additional shipping cost of the box, you’d think that means they know how it’s getting shipped….so why then can’t…won’t? somebody answer this simple question?
Not only would it reduce a significant stress for us old dogs, but it would make life much easier/simpler for everyone!
By merely answering the simple question, we could address it correctly, thereby saving RHINO money having to track and reship it, and avoid extra ware and tear possibly leading to extra costs to replace damaged product.

I know we live in an orange world where everything is back asswards, but this just makes no sense? Why would you purposely do this?
And after 2 months of begging it’s starting to feel like it’s on purpose…
Awesome way to treat loyal folks who have continuously handed over buttloads of money the last 50 years!
So yeah, we wish we could get exited….

Oroborous. Tough to designate shipping to correct address when ordering, if carrier unknown, and you're rural. For me, PO box for mail, physical address could be either UPS or Fedex. I feel your angst. Wouldnt mind paying a few bucks extra for convenience of picking a carrier.

I'm glad you mentioned that one , Dennis, I'd forgotten all about it. I also have a tendency to forget what I've ordered, so it's more a nice surprise than a waiting game. Luckily I only seem to order things I like.

I Know at least 1STSHOW is in same boat, certainly there’s more of us boonie dwellers out there lol You’d think RHINO would want to avoid re-shipping cost?

We’re same situation as yourself so you understand what a hassle it is ordering anything! Remember the good old days when you could choose your shipping method/preference, for a premium, at checkout of ANY web store…
But hey, just a simple one word reply would do the trick.

DAVEROCK: reminds me of when I’m watching a movie with TOO and she says “you’ve seen this one already” and since I don’t remember it’s like getting to watch it new again lol She thinks it’s a problem, I call it 2 for 1 special ; )

Actually Oro I have a street address. The service and route is what DeJoy screwed up. And how does my UPS leg go all the way to KC before coming back to Colorado? But that does not negate the plea for information that should be easy enough to supply. I thought you had even gotten MARYE to try to find out for us. No reply yet I guess. Sounds like bots run the show at WB corporate HQ. And certainly an answer would assuage the many worried minds as I'm sure you are not alone in having the rural postal conundrum.

This Nassau show from the box is quickly becoming a favorite. Much like Dave, Playing In The Band is one of my top GD tunes. I absolutely love it from all ears, but especially 72-74 versions. This 3/16/73 version is simply stunning!!

    2/1/78 for 57

So Dave just announced in his Seaside Chat that 2/1/78 is going to be the show for Vol 57. I think that is cool as we already have 2/3 and 2/5 from the old Dick's Picks release (I can't recall which number it is). I do like getting the "adjacent" shows to older releases. If we are not getting a box set with successive shows in it, it is nice that the Dave's Picks series can add these shows in. I have no familiarity with this show, but it should be fun to listen to for sure.

Dave also comments that he and the crew are committed to having the variety of shows from different eras/years in the series. I also like that provided that the 2026 subscription gives us something 1970 or before. I think we are due for that. I also think it is about time that 2/15/73 gets the nod. I see someone has mentioned 2/9/73 as well. Maybe both can be Vol 58 with the bonus disc and all, although there might not be room to fit both shows in their entirety even with the bonus disc. I had both shows on tape and very early in my tape trading days. So there is sentimental value to me for those shows.
