How Are You?" became "Won't you come with me?" and, ultimately, "Where does the time go?," who would have thought? 60 years on, we're celebrating the Grateful Dead's Diamond Era. Here we go back to the beginning, to the original "Follow," and uncover the wonders of getting on the bus all over again.
ENJOYING THE RIDE is a sweeping 60-CD collection that maps an epic cross-country road trip along the “Heady Highway” with stops at storied venues where the music, the moment, and the magic of the Dead reliably converged. Spanning 25 years of legendary live performances, this expansive compendium spotlights defining shows from 1969 to 1994 at 20 venues that consistently inspired the band to new heights.
With the exception of a few tracks from earlier releases, virtually all of the music on ENJOYING THE RIDE is previously unreleased, with more than 450 tracks and over 60 hours of music. Of the 20 shows in the collection, 17 are presented in full, with some featuring additional material from the same venue. The remaining three — Fillmore West, Fillmore East, and Boston Music Hall — are curated from multiple performances at each venue, capturing key moments on those legendary stages.
These performances were originally recorded by Owsley “Bear” Stanley, Betty Cantor-Jackson, Kidd Candelario, Dan Healy, and John Cutler. David Glasser and Jeffrey Norman restored and mastered the performances, with select ones using Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction for optimal sound quality.
It's all housed in a custom keepsake box inspired by the experience of traveling from city to city to see the Dead at legendary venues across America. Inside, a beautifully detailed tour guide features liner notes by Jesse Jarnow (author and co-host of the Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast) and a producer’s note from Lemieux, an essay by the Owsley Stanley Foundation, and more. The set is richly illustrated with photos, including many taken at the shows featured in the collection.

Made me tear up reading about your Dog . I had a Beagle "Blue" and she was the best friend got her in 1974 Named her after "Old and in the Way"......"Bluegrass" She passed away in 1987 Her body broke down but she came to my arms when she passed 38 years later I still think of her often

I would have to give the nod to the HCS Box. I mean the sound quality and the performances are top tier. 6/10 is definitely in my top three shows of all time.
The PNW box is no slouch and we get three 74 shows.

I will go with an 82 show or 88. However, as we know, Dave is very unpredictable.

My last dog, a black lab named Doctor Gonzo (who also answered to Gonz, Doc, and Buddy and who was one of the best river swimmers, frisbee catchers, and silent conversationalists I've ever known) died in 1996, and I'm still not over it. I think it's cats for me from here on out. Not that they're easy, but dogs are just ridiculously hard. My heart goes out to you, Vguy.

When the going gets weird
Something weird happened at Real Gone over the weekend. I mentioned that I placed my order for the DiP 4 vinyl last Thursday and received a confirmation, but no shipping notice for 4 days. Which was weird because they normally ship right away.
But now I just got a shipping notice, and the item is listed on their site as "in stock and ready to ship" (as of about noon Pacific time on the 30th). I'm thinking they must have had a network outage or something. Anyway, if you thought you missed out, you might want to check their website.

My 4th show. With a friend who had wisely seen the killer 3 show Uptown run that proceeded Alpine (sadly, I had not.) Still remember the seemingly random comment made by another DH who had also seen those Uptown shows as he wandered by us and chatted in the grassy lot before the show:
"All I need now is a Lazy Lightning!"
And later thinking - wow, he got it!

Like many others here, I am going in reverse order.. On the last few box sets I went in chronological order which starts with bang. I wanted to end with the big fireworks his time.
Anyway, where I am heading with this and as others have mentioned, Cap Cntr 93 was not at all what I expected and in a good way. The playing and sound are dialed in. They were looking for something and it's like it surprised even them when they found it. Like the dog that caught the car. Very focused playing and an enjoyable show, especially the second set.
Working my way through things when time allows.
Uncle Tripple, I echo what others are saying, best of luck with your recovery. My hand is all messed up at the moment too, at least we have some good new stuff to listen to. Your comments here are always positive, forward looking and reflective. Great spirit, I hope the good comes back to you in the form of a quick and as complete recovery as possible.

Hats off to everybody who is listening to this set in some sort of logical or chronological order. Me, I'm just flailing around!
I started off by listening to a few shows all the way through ('84 Greek, Red Rocks '79, Uniondale '73, Landover '93) but lately I haven't had time for full shows so I'm just cherry picking a disc here and there. Like say disc 42, which is the bonus material for Kaiser in '85, then disc 53, which has the Help/Slip/Franklins from the Shoreline in '91, and then disc 5 from the Capitol '71. Some of it is mind boggling life changing shit. Some of it is just pretty darned good rock and roll. All of it's been enjoyable and well worth owning.
Also wanted to include a shout out to whoever did the travel book. It's pretty entertaining in itself, now that I'm finally getting around to reading it!
My DiP 4 vinyl arrives today, if the tracking info is to be believed. Although I totally agree with Whoever It Was who posted recently that CD (with its longer running time) is actually the superior medium for Dead shows, especially the ones like DiP 4 that include multiple jams that extend beyond the half hour mark, I still had to have this one, even though I still have the CDs. Not sure why, exactly, but that's how it is. Can't wait to drop the needle on it, hopefully later today.

Hi - saw your comment about signing lyrics of a show in 93. It reminded me of a deadhead in England I knew who was (and is) famous for his interest in deaf culture and who formed deafheads creating a zone at dead concerts and actually signed for the band on numerous occasions. His name is Paddy Ladd and he’s still active. Wikipedia has a page on him.

we were seated on Phil's side first level, It was like 2/3 into the show when we saw MG signing until then I had no idea that the whole section seated next to was deaf! Great time kids were dancing sweating just like everyone else !

.... is actually in Old Bridge township. My high school was on the same road (rt 516) about 5 miles away. Englishtown is one of the outer reaches of Old Bridge. I grew up on the opposite side of town,,, Cliffwood Beach. We were the most southern point in Old Bridge. Nice place to grow up.

Hi all, With all the excitement mentioned around, I have a question that i'm sure, my friends, you have bounced around since DP4 came out originally What's the deal?! Even though we have DP4 and Bear's Choice, can't we have it all together in a mini-box? Haven't "the suits" died by now? Perhaps this would have been better at the new album thread. sorry. I'm certainly ETR, perhaps a bit to slowly, but I'm sure I'll get to it all before half way through the next life.

Good question, I'd gobble up a mini box of Feb 1970 in a heartbeat.
The most obvious issue is that Warner Brothers released Bears Choice in 1973, so they likely own the rights to those parts of the shows. I'm not completely sure on this, but that is one issue with repackaging this and reselling it.
Additionally, they don't seem that keen on re-releasing partials that were previously released for some reason. It could be they have other shows they want to get released and want to focus attention on the previously unreleased stuff.
But man, there are a few shows I would like see get a second crack and remastering, Hampton 89 among them and all those partials, especially from the Early Dicks Picks. And more 1968.

Without wishing to question your undoubted wisdom, when you state that "The most obvious issue is that Warner Brothers released Bears Choice in 1973, so they likely own the rights to those parts of the shows", surely exactly the same applies to Live/Dead but that didn't prevent the release of Fillmore West 1969: The complete recordings. As Rhino is a part of the Warner empire, it shouldn't be a problem for them to (re)release any Warner material.
You are indeed correct when you say that Rhino appear reticent to release full versions of shows that were earlier partially released. In some cases this is a shame, in others not.

The original 3 album set seemed quite expansive to me in the 70's. Little did we know...
I'm not sure Dicks 4 would be improved by including Bears Choice. I never did care much for that album. A bit like with Steal Your Face, it doesn't give any indication at all of the greatness of shows it was taken from.

So many hard things in the news these days. But right now a Bobby McGee from '71 is playing, I'm drinking a Russian River pils while the chicken roasts on the grill, there's a sweet cool breeze blowing, and feeling good is good enough for me.
It's weird, isn't it, that Steal Your Face and Bear's Choice both came from live shows that everybody loves, but those are some of least beloved of the '70s Dead records? I actually have a soft spot in my heart for SYF, mainly because I somehow found an 8 track of it back in the day and I kind of wore it out driving around in my '69 Buick Rivera. My friends got sick of it, but not me.

It was the second Dead album I got, from Virgin Records in Manchester around the time it came out, summer 1976. Great cover, plus a bonus album of tracks from band members solo records of the time.

I agree, though, Dave. Probably too small of a sample to judge the whole shows. I only have the seven-song version.
