When the ride begins in '65 at a pizza parlor in the South Bay under another moniker, who would have imagined? When "Who Are You? Where Are You? How Are You?" became "Won't you come with me?" and, ultimately, "Where does the time go?," who would have thought? 60 years on, we're celebrating the Grateful Dead's Diamond Era. Here we go back to the beginning, to the original "Follow," and uncover the wonders of getting on the bus all over again.

ENJOYING THE RIDE is a sweeping 60-CD collection that maps an epic cross-country road trip along the “Heady Highway” with stops at storied venues where the music, the moment, and the magic of the Dead reliably converged. Spanning 25 years of legendary live performances, this expansive compendium spotlights defining shows from 1969 to 1994 at 20 venues that consistently inspired the band to new heights.

With the exception of a few tracks from earlier releases, virtually all of the music on ENJOYING THE RIDE is previously unreleased, with more than 450 tracks and over 60 hours of music. Of the 20 shows in the collection, 17 are presented in full, with some featuring additional material from the same venue. The remaining three — Fillmore West, Fillmore East, and Boston Music Hall — are curated from multiple performances at each venue, capturing key moments on those legendary stages.

These performances were originally recorded by Owsley “Bear” Stanley, Betty Cantor-Jackson, Kidd Candelario, Dan Healy, and John Cutler. David Glasser and Jeffrey Norman restored and mastered the performances, with select ones using Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction for optimal sound quality.

It's all housed in a custom keepsake box inspired by the experience of traveling from city to city to see the Dead at legendary venues across America. Inside, a beautifully detailed tour guide features liner notes by Jesse Jarnow (author and co-host of the Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast) and a producer’s note from Lemieux, an essay by the Owsley Stanley Foundation, and more. The set is richly illustrated with photos, including many taken at the shows featured in the collection.

Due May 30th, this one is limited to 6,000 individually numbered copies and exclusive to Dead.net. We invite you to take this not-so-little piece of the road home.

Now that the Big Box is upon us, can we get back to ... what's the occasion or opportunity to gather the recently unearthed and well-known unreleased '68 shows?

I'm definitely looking forward to DaP 54 from 3/73 plus bonus disc, and the BfA 50th with 6-17-75.

So, uh, is the momentum building to deliver '68 unto us? Dave?

HF

Don't post often, but still lurk
Dave and crew delivered a home run! This box is not for me, as I am holding out feint hope for more 68' Dead, a 69' Ark Box, or Sept. 70' FE (even though Bear was in pinstripes, dont understand how the FE does not have an impeccable sounboard; Miller found one) For all the clamoring for more 80's Dead; Dave and company delievered in spades. Not only more Brent and beyond Dead, but for what it seems; outstanding shows. I do understand the cost, as cash always reigns supreme, but E72' or 30 trips were not cheap.
Also, I do hope Spacebrother finds a way to get a box. This one's for you brother!

Be kind

Good evening rockers!!

One might think that TPTB would be obliged to reveal the complete playlists-----where are they? Rumors and gossip hint that these may be incomplete or compilations. If I knew that was the case, I might reconsider.

So, TPTB, do the right thing and let us----the paying customers----know if we should really shell out a large amount of coin for ..................???? Well, we don't really know yet.

DL, do the right thing.

Rock on,

Doc

This box I must say would fill in well some holes in my collection, I dig the '91 & '93 Vinnie selections. I have next to none of this era. I subsequently have a bunch of collected shows from 1973, especially in lieu of recent years, box sets, etc. So I'm not really crying over the underrepresentation of that year for the 60th Box, the same goes for 1977 to which there's not much left. 1974 is kinda slim Pickens too.

{According to my data the 60th Big Box Nassau 1973 show is a missing/found Betty Board!}

The Brent Shows also would fill in some holes well for me, and they are a nice selection both before and after Jerry's coma. Although I would've got rid of one of the East Troy shows and added a late 1978 Capital Centre, Landover MD show from 11/23/78.
The Port Chester Shows and both Fillmore(s) East & West are classics and I'd love to have them. I wonder how Dave getting Philly`78 on this box makes for the future of a May1978 Box? Hopefully Syracuse 5/9 is released separately as a Big Box sampler show or a Dave Pick! ANYWAYS,.... ramblings.
I would have to save a bit for this Box of Boxes and if I'm lucky I will get a pre-order done in time by about a week prior till release date. That's how I had to get the May Sunshine`73 box and lucky I did! That one sold out in hours.

I watched the video and understand the theme.
Doesn’t really matter to me, I just want audio upgrades of what I already have.

But as long as we’re listing missed venues, The Omni was a huge miss. Could have released 12-12-73, 6-20-74, 3-30-94 (it has a Dark Star).
Hopefully that means there’s an Omni Box in the future.

The ALAC download is $399, no shipping, no shelf space, and you still get the music.

Hope the CD’s don’t come with glue on them.

Dave says that the 69 shows didn’t have all the reels.
But that what’s there includes 2 Dark Stars.
I don’t need The Beach Boys, cut that, I have Miller versions that I will rarely, or never, listen to.

I wonder what the tape formulation will be. Is it going to be Type-1, the normal position, the low-end tape that was used in commercially available tapes way back in time and is still being used in today's cassette revival—or are they going to use Type 2 chromium oxide tape, Cro2, that was common in the high-end blank tapes?

The exclusive cassette is a cute tribute but for this price why not include the show on both CD and cassette; maybe not many of us have cassette players anymore . . . .?

Favorite part of the video is when Dave says- Have an idea for the 60th anniversary- 10 different venues, 30 discs. Then he adds…Have another idea- 20 venues, 60 discs. And he’s been steering our ship in that direction for over 25 years. Cheers Everyone

....i will say it's good to see familiar names again. Box set releases for me have two purposes.
And see? There's Zuckfun! 🍻

....THAT! Is a very good question. Definitely sell quicker if that was in this.
It's weird. Both good news regarding the release with everything else going on, but also frustrating because of the fog of uncertainty.

... and 'charming' in all of it's first set quirks, right up to Truckin' - where upon they go on a serious mission to blow everyone's mind.
For me, the Other One (+ Comes a Time) is in the handful of best and most intense Other Ones Ever ...
The Lovelight > Goin Down the Road > Saturday Night is the very tasty icing on the cake.

Yeah, we got the blood moon out here in Oregonia but it's too cloudy to see it proper, also too damp & cold to! ANYWAYS,...... Had me an epiphany....
This 60th Big Box is like the perfect complimentary set of shows for the entire Dave's Picks collection.
Not including other box sets , Dick's series and such, I know we all have plenty of shows to fill in the blanks but hear me out.
Just separating out the Dave's series and after double checking my notes it would appear that this box fills in some gaps as well as covering more of the Brent era, (So far only 12 picks with 15 total shows) and adding some shows from 1989. Maybe 1982?
Also the three Vince shows make for a nice break out of the era, with including some of the 'lost `90s album' songs. Basically I'm saying it seems to supplement the Dave's series real well, catching up on Brent shows and getting Vinnie finally released. Besides a couple of Dick's Picks, a Road Trips, and the Giants Stadium 1991 show, that's it!
For the Other One.
Vince.

I dig the venues bit for this 60th box, as I was a very ecstatic with the PNw Box, the MsG Box, and the River Box. All venue themed and excellent. Though after some samples listening and upon my research I'd swap Alpine East Troy for Uptown Chicago Theater and keep the years the same. 1980 and 1981, the Alpine Valley shows for Chicago 8/19/80 and 2/28/81. Anyways,... Still a great box!

17 full shows sounds grate.

The Fillmore’s and Boston are exactly what some people have repeatedly stated in the past that they want - partial shows like Road Trips.

This is the Road Trips Box - a mix of partial shows and complete shows.

Sorry, still a question or two on VATs.

If you were in america visiting and bought stuff, when you got home would you have to pay a tax on it?

Also, if you buy the "downloads", do you somehow still pay VAT?

Yeah, I know, if only you had my wife :-)

But really, cost is a mixed bag. Yeah you need to coin, which like everything in life not everyone has.

Doubling production, while cutting cost in half doesn't work out. Lets say they make 12,000 and only sell 10,000. Now you got 2,000 sitting on the shelf, that will be lost, stolen or broken. You have storage cost, personal to manage cost and you pay income tax on stock on the shelf.

Also seen talk of E72 was more disc and only 400 bucks. First that was 2011, prices have risen a bit since then. Also I remember when it came out everyone was like "oh my god who the hell can afford that". All true, but the damn things are listed on ebay for 2500. Sounds like investment. Didn't whine when you bought a chunk of IBM for 10 and now worth 200.

Someone here had it right with breakdown per cd. Still about 10 bucks. Not a bad price.

Finally, everyone must know someone to get a copy of this from. I'd help anyone I could. Because the music is the most important part.

Box sets by their nature are big and expensive. I see other box sets (by other artist,,,,, looking at you Neil Young), that I think they'd hold their hands on their ass a long time before I'd pay that.

On the "plus" side of "box sets". There has been a real movement by older artist labels releasing the first "X" albums from an artist. (mostly jazz maybe), but you can but the first 7 albums for 15 bucks. Now there's a deal.

But I like the big boxes, I like adding them to my collection. All those boxes look great on the shelf. My wife thinks they're worthless and maybe they never will recoup the money spent. But they'll go to my kid.

Music collections, cheaper than guns, smaller than cars.

Enjoy
Dennis

Firstly, any goods entering the EU from a non-EU country are liable to VAT. As far as I know it doesn't matter if, for instance, you send me a present or if I order something from your company. Furthermore, certain categories of goods are also liable for import duty if the value exceeds a particular amount.

Secondly, people entering an EU country can bring certain items with them up to a particular value without having to declare them to the customs man.

Thirdly, if I buy downloads from outside the EU, I don't have to pay VAT on them as the authorities don't know that I've made an online purchase. They would love to tax me on such things and did look at ways of doing it but finally concluded it was not possible.

Unfortunately this is a gross oversimplification as there are huge numbers of rules, regulations and other pitfalls that need to be investigated to get a definitive answer.

Danehead - I think 3/17/93 SBD is complete and the filler Landover show 9/15/82 is missing second half of Set II SBD which would explain its use as filler. I'm definitely excited about 3/17.

RyXs - as you and others have pointed out, some classic venues are missing from the box, including the Uptown in Chicago. The Deads time at the Uptown was relatively short but very sweet Jan '78 - Feb '81, with 6 3-show runs scheduled in that period, including 3 runs in '78!! (last show in May '78 run cancelled). I saw 1 show there, 12/3/79, plus JGB in Nov. '81, but a close friend that I met a few years later thinks he saw all but 1 of the Uptown shows plus a lot of other artists there and those memories he still has are that it was really really awesome. Honestly hoping they release a Getting Down at the Uptown Box at some point before the world ends. The first show of the Aug. '80 run that immediately proceeded the first Alpine show is absolute killer and would have been a great choice here if they could but I think the SBD has some sort of issue based on what circulates. Which brings up the fact that 8/23/80 Alpine SBD does not circulate and that's something that Dave L. pays attention too. And being on the general subject of the Uptown - the 11/18/78 show Set II is fantastic (only show from Nov. '78 run that circulates in complete SBD. Highly recommend.

I'm assuming that they will post a full track list at some point before this thing sells out. They can't expect us to just plop down $600 (plus taxes and god knows what for shipping) without knowing what's actually in the box. Can they?

Good point made by some of y'all to note that the box seems to compliment the Dave's series quite well, with a number of shows from years that Dave has neglected, and with some incomplete shows that wouldn't have fit with the Dave's concept.

One other thing: it dawns on me that if 7.13.84 is being released as a part of this set, then we are almost certainly never going to get the box of Greek Theater shows that some of us have been wishing for for years. Which is almost weird, given the significance of that venue, at least to my crew of Heads and our era. Maybe there's some problem with the audio for many of those shows?

But whatever disappointment I might feel about realizing that there is NEVER going to be that Greek box I've been dreaming on is offset somewhat knowing that we're at least finally getting 7.13.84. Which would, in itself, pretty much justify the $600 for me.

That's assuming it's a full show! How do I know we're not just getting the Scarlet/Touch of Grey/Fire sequence that's featured on the compilation sets?

Right now, I don't know that. I assume we'll all know pretty soon.

While admittedly not getting the box, re: Alpine Valley-- it was a great venue with some history (SRV's last show, naturally comes to mind). The 1989 run is likely being saved for a release of its own someday (hopefully). The 1982 Dick's Pick is quite nice, but the 1980 and 81 shows don't look especially great.

If Dave had asked me (which he obviously doesn't ask me about anything), 6/22/85 was always a hot cassette in my collection-- the Hell and Sugaree starters blister and the second sets cooks with one of only a few Keep on Growing. I always had 6/26 and 6/27 from the 1987 run and the 26th second set absolutely rocks. Unfortunately, I do not believe that one circulates in SBD. Just my 2 cents on Alpine-- from 1988 into the mid-1990s, it was my favorite place to see a show.

Well, like many I've been waffling, but this spurred an inventory of what I've got on disc, and I think I'll go for it.
I've been way less religious about Daves and Dicks than many here (9 or 10 total on disc, plus many sampled rips of ones I let go), but I've been pretty into the annual boxes, including the old mini-boxes (Winterland 73, 74, 77). Also key standalones like Vault 1 & 2, Hundred-year, and Lyceum. Somewhere around 175 total discs in hand--yeah, a slacker for sure.

And, drum-roll please, 14 of the 20 shows in this set fill clear gaps in my timeline. Some significant gaps, some small ones (eg, I'm psyched to hear Mar 77, before Olsen got them to May's "just exactly perfect" sound). Only 2 discs in this set are near-matches for things in hand (same season, similar venue), and the other 4 I can easily be excited about (either a period I love or a very different venue). The only career-spanning set I have is So Many Roads, so there's that too. And I love Jesse's writing! So I'm in. (gulp)

Cap Center 93 fits on 2 CDs, hence the 82 filler. I totally agree that 2/23/71 would be an improvement over 2/20&24, but obviously being held back for an individual release. The best bits of 4/25&27/71 were released in L&G, and clearly The Beach Boys segment will not be included. I think releasing 4/26/71 which isn’t included on L&G, would be much better. As far as FW, if you exclude all the material with guests, everything else would fit on 3 CDs. If you exclude the 3 songs that were included on the FW Bonus Disc, there might be enough room to include the Lovelight with Janis. It would be nice to have a definitive answer on this question. And I agree that a complete track list would be helpful.

I guess Dave felt like we didn't have enough Alabama Getaways in our collection. Although, I am excited about the slew of Shakedowns.

Looks like a cool box for the most part. Aside from the earlier stuff and 7/13/84, I'm looking forward to 11/21/85. A little sloppy at times, but some really good offerings in that show.

Hi Gary, since I lived in the Bay Area during the Reign of the Dead, and went to as many shows as possible, here's my eight shows in the box:
Winterland 3/20/77 ( I also hoped for a nice little Winterland box for this run)
Red Rocks 8/12/79 ( My first Red Rocks, and it got rained out, moved to McNichols the last two shows)
Frost 8/12/83
Greek 7/13/84
Kaiser 11/21, 22/1985
Oakland Col 12/27/89
Shoreline 5/12/91

If Dave had selected some SoCal shows, I went to many down there, so that would have upped my count.

David and Rhino, can you at least make the Flac's a la carte? Hell even if you charged $20 per show I'd buy a whole slew. Just not the full on $600 or $500 it is. I'm stoked to see 4/5/69, 3/20/77 (that Row Jimmy, I mean come on!) and the first set of 5/13/78 in soundboard! Thanks for the consideration.

Soo.. if "the Cap" isnt the show without an ending - then I guess it is the Alpine 1980 - a rather short show (smoking 1 set), so if the end (from space out) is not on the board tapes, I think, there will be room for most of 7/11-81..

    Still haven't heard the cassette

But other than, I think I've listened to the whole thing. Except for the Stanford show, which was in such poor audio I decided to skip, at least for the time being. And the '94 show, come to think of it. All good things in all good time.

I still have not gotten through this box either. I am more than halfway, going backwards.

I took a side trip on 81 and... I'm still there. I am ready to turn the page though. 1980 here I come. A pretty good year, overpowered by the Warfield and Radio City though. There are other shows that could have climbed as high, less formulaic but unfortunately do not stand up to the recording quality (and video) of those multi-tracks.

Which will bring me to 79 and 78 right around the corner.

Oh, I have not completely finished the Spring 78 box yet. or as Yoda would say, Pathetic am I.

    Now you're talking.
    Which model?
Teac made great stuff back then.
    Quality builds. Easy to restore.
    Cheers
Side note - I'm like only half way through the box. Slacker. Too many riches lately.

    So after fighting the…

So after fighting the impulse for several months now, I broke down. Like many of us “seasoned” heads out there, at one time I had many hundreds of cassettes. Now I only have one (so far) from this new box. It kept niggling at me that I hadn’t heard this yet in official release form so I just purchased a 1977 TEAC cassette deck. Here we go again,…but at least I’m enjoying the ride.

Yes, I’ve had it. The parcel hasn’t got as far as DHL yet but I’m sure it will.

I didn't know she was ill, I just read this first in these very threads, thanks to the Heads.

For the Daves Picks 56 thread I put my cursor in the top right hand corner, on top of the little picture of my icon. and press that. Then press recent posts, and all the threads appear in order of when someone last posted. Daves 56 was 4th down a few minutes ago.

This Nassau show from the box is quickly becoming a favorite. Much like Dave, Playing In The Band is one of my top GD tunes. I absolutely love it from all ears, but especially 72-74 versions. This 3/16/73 version is simply stunning!!
