When the ride begins in '65 at a pizza parlor in the South Bay under another moniker, who would have imagined? When "Who Are You? Where Are You? How Are You?" became "Won't you come with me?" and, ultimately, "Where does the time go?," who would have thought? 60 years on, we're celebrating the Grateful Dead's Diamond Era. Here we go back to the beginning, to the original "Follow," and uncover the wonders of getting on the bus all over again.

ENJOYING THE RIDE is a sweeping 60-CD collection that maps an epic cross-country road trip along the “Heady Highway” with stops at storied venues where the music, the moment, and the magic of the Dead reliably converged. Spanning 25 years of legendary live performances, this expansive compendium spotlights defining shows from 1969 to 1994 at 20 venues that consistently inspired the band to new heights.

With the exception of a few tracks from earlier releases, virtually all of the music on ENJOYING THE RIDE is previously unreleased, with more than 450 tracks and over 60 hours of music. Of the 20 shows in the collection, 17 are presented in full, with some featuring additional material from the same venue. The remaining three — Fillmore West, Fillmore East, and Boston Music Hall — are curated from multiple performances at each venue, capturing key moments on those legendary stages.

These performances were originally recorded by Owsley “Bear” Stanley, Betty Cantor-Jackson, Kidd Candelario, Dan Healy, and John Cutler. David Glasser and Jeffrey Norman restored and mastered the performances, with select ones using Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction for optimal sound quality.

It's all housed in a custom keepsake box inspired by the experience of traveling from city to city to see the Dead at legendary venues across America. Inside, a beautifully detailed tour guide features liner notes by Jesse Jarnow (author and co-host of the Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast) and a producer’s note from Lemieux, an essay by the Owsley Stanley Foundation, and more. The set is richly illustrated with photos, including many taken at the shows featured in the collection.

Due May 30th, this one is limited to 6,000 individually numbered copies and exclusive to Dead.net. We invite you to take this not-so-little piece of the road home.

And I was at work at the fly rod factory.
A fellow Deadhead and I were told by our supervisor who had heard on the radio. It was a glum day after that but we had tapes going to help. Don't remember what show. Definitely welled up but but soldiered on trying not to let it show. It was like losing a dear friend or more like a family member. Can remember thinking back to my last show 3-6-94 PHX when I thought this may be the last time, for either me or Jerry.
Cheers to Jerry

And nothing comes for free.
There's nothing you can hold for very long ...

Greatest thanks to you, Jerry (your songwriting compadre Hunter + Phil, et. al) for all of the joy and magic that you live-streamed out of your soul on blast, and gave over to us - in spades - for as long as you could do so.

As PF said (more/less): Thankfully we have your music available every day to keep in contact with the tones and with your spirit.

I was enlisted in the U.S. Navy technically on shore duty {shipyards} and in-between commands. So when I heard the glum news, I took the rest of that damn day off!

Rest In Peace Jerome, all these Days In Between later.

Was walking into Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem. A group of about 20 heads were outside mourning. It took till I saw it on tv in the mall that I understood. For me at the time, it was a shock as I had so many things in life going on I was unaware of the scene at the time.

In the words of John Lennon, "Miss Him Miss Him Miss Him."

....from a co-worker who made fun of the Dead the entire time i knew him.
That being said, first song I listened to that day was Must Have Been The Roses.
That song has an endearing spot in my personal headspace Dead catalogue. For good or ill. Not sure of the show, but probably 1987 - 1988. Because those fresh shows were in my cars cassette deck circulation at the time.
Spinning 1.2.70 now.

Down the road to Union Station running through the fog
I thought I saw Joe Hill last night grinning like a dog
"I understand they did you in for everyone to see"
He smiled - shook his head - "that's a lie," said he

"I been on a mountain top observing from a cloud
Been in the hearts of workers milling with the crowd
My tears are shed for freedom and equality of means
My blood and perspiration oil the gears of your machine"

Down the road again
Down the road again

Down the road to Massachusetts driving through the night
I thought I saw Jack Kennedy hitchhiking by a light
I hit the brakes - backed up slow, and Kennedy got in
I said, "It's nice to see you lookin' back in shape again

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe they gunned you down"
He just shook his head and looked off sadly with a frown
Said, "bullets are like waves, they only rearrange the sand
History turns upon the tides and not the deeds of man"

Down the road again
Down the road again

Driving down to Fiddler's Green to hear a tune or two
I thought I saw John Lennon there, looking kind of blue
I sat down beside him, said "I thought you bought the store"
He said "I heard that rumour, what can I do you for?"

"Have you written anything I might have never heard?"
He picked up his guitar and strummed a minor third
All I can recall of what he sang, for what it's worth
"Long as songs of mine are sung I'm with you on this earth"

Down the road again
Down the road again

From the corner of my eye I saw the sun explode
I didn't look directly 'cause it would have burned my soul
When the smoke and thunder cleared enough to look around
I heard a sweet guitar lick, an old familiar sound

I heard a laugh I recognised come rolling from the earth
Saw it rise into the skies like lightning giving birth
It sounded like Garcia but I couldn't see the face
Just the beard and the glasses and a smile on empty space

Down the road again
Down the road again

Well, yesterday actually. I can remember that Jerry's death was reported on the national news and was front page news the following day. Apart from my one Deadhead friend, this surprised everyone else I knew. The Dead obviously were nowhere near as well known in the U.K. as The States, and most of my friends assumed they were just a strange acquired taste of mine. An obscure cult band from the 60's with a very limited following. They didn't know anything about you lot.

I was working at Charles River Park next to the Boston garden, and had a wristband for the next show ticket line. I thought it was another false alarm, but soon found out the worst. Poor Jerry.

The day the news of Jerry's death broke, I was starting a new job in a new city and pretty overwhelmed by everything that entailed. I was unpacking boxes, meeting new people, shaking lots of hands and nodding vigorously as my new bosses explained my new duties, and I didn't have much time to think about it.

Until later. That evening there was a gathering of people in the park near my new apartment, so I went down there to listen to the songs and read the signs and try to process the whole thing.

I'm still processing.

I, too, was surprised by huge public outpouring of grief. My primary show-going years were the late '70s and early '80s, a time when the Dead was widely considered a cult band that was barely relevant to the music biz or mainstream culture. By 1995, I had not been to a show in years, and I didn't realize how big the "cult" had become. But the public reaction to Jerry's death--the front page stories, the mass gatherings, the musical tributes--was a lot like when John Lennon was killed. And that was when it first hit me that the Dead's audience was damn near as big as the Beatles.

And I think it's bigger now than it was then.

TTB was great at Red Rocks, btw. I also traveled up to Bend to visit a friend and caught a show (just one of the two) there. It was super cool to see some of the same folks I had met at RR, some of whom were following TTB through several cities on the current tour. Strangers stopping strangers. High fives, hugs, and other things were exchanged. Reminded me of the olden days, it did.

I was on the job at an all day presentation that I was video taping, running the camera and recording. I learned about it during a break at 11 am. It was hard for me to concentrate the rest of the day. I felt a big hole in my life. Later friends gathered at our house and we all went over to GG park to join the heads gathering together in grief. There was a large circle of heads on the grass, with lots of candles and pictures of Jerry, and people singing along to guys with guitars and drums.

....delivered the goods. Holy shit.
I need to pick up some brain cells after that.
Y'all need to catch them. Trust me.
Dude next to me offered a free ticket to the San Diego show tomorrow.
I would be a liar if I said I didn't think about it. And I thought about it for a while. Dude was begging me to take it. Amazing.

PF, I am with you on that. We reached that conclusion after our last visit there (Dead and Co) in 2023. We won't go back, the ingress and egress sucks, and the lack of shade and cooling stations in 100F heat make this venue one to avoid during the heat of the summer.

OK, now, I've got your attention...its time to talk about Meet up at the Movies, and that sweet audio-video goodness that awaits us in the theaters.

I bought the GDMovie Re-Release years ago and put it on the shelf. I just discovered theres a Dark Star (and a Spanish Jam, WRS-LIG) on disk 2! I regret not finding this gem during the pandemic. But, I did still manage to organize my music collection. I also tried to learn to paint, but sadly, Bob Ross left me in the dust. He made it look so darn easy! I digress...

Anyway, I believe Dave's first job before taking over as archivist was to catalog the video vault. That being said, I wonder if there is a new video release strategy? I'm not interested in those post 1980 videos myself. But I would love to see of compilation of the earlier misc unreleased footage in a single package. The "All the Years Combine DVD Set" was really a nice start though. And even JKreutz's Backstage pass montage type video was nice too, but it kinda just made me jones for the original footage.

And then, there's the other question. Should we enhance, fix, or colorize those old snowy videos, such as Oakland 1979 with AI? Maybe yes, maybe no. Jerry has so much energy on stage, and Brent's hair is just flying all over the place. So cool to see. And are there more hidden holy grails? Maybe a soundcheck from Saturday Night Live? Time will tell.

But only Dave knows all this for sure...

Stay well, and take care, my friends.

As fate would have it, I will be out of town (which is fine).

I do have the GDM and its bonus material so I will get enjoy it (again) eventually

I still believe there may be video content still undiscovered in the vault. I know I could be wrong but listening to some of Dave's comments, I think there is. There may be some later GD screen video that can be released. Plus, an inordinate amount of fragments that can be put together to tell us even more of the story when patched together and made a story.

Gonna miss Bobby Whitlock. He and Delaney (and Bonnie) were such driving forces rolling into the 70's. Americana (1) GD, (2) the Band, (3) Delaney and Bonnie. Of course, big tip of the hat to Dylan. Love his song writing but not quite as much as a performer. Blast away. Smile

GD meetupatthemovies is again not being shown locally. Went to all before, then pandemic and local growth caused an old theater to be bought by AMC. They saw real estate exploding and owned another theater within 2 miles. So they bought it, tore it down, and sold property at a substantial profit. One of the downsides of the brutality of capitalism. It was showing that 4-5 theaters within a 40 mile radius would be screening it when it was announced. Now have to drive 100 miles to see it. Bought the movie last month in hd before they announced. My 4th time buying going back to VHS. Would love it if here locally, as time to meet new heads. Paradise lost for now.

I prefer to attend outdoor events in the summer mostly. The movie theaters DO have air conditioning, and you dont have to bring an umbrella or a folding chair though. So, that's a plus.

Many local parks have a summer concert or movie series, so maybe they can try that. Group simulcast, live feeds from other venues, maybe with some funds to benefit the environment and parks too.

At a recent concert in the park, with Railroad Earth and Daniel Donato, there were both beer trucks AND colorful booths. You just cant get that in a movie theater. And the dispensary booth guy even gave me some free stuff. Which I shared with everyone I met. It was a VERY good day.

I too went to D&C 2023 at The Gorge, and it is my last time there too. Strike that, the day I go back to The Gorge is the day they slap a Hampton Inn on the middle of that mofo. It was stinking hot, they provided NO shade, the camping is comically bad, I saw one shit so big in the port-potty I swear someone needed wheels to get that baby in there! Even getting in was high pressure, answering questions to a wanna be cop and them literally emptying out other people's cars all around us. No thanks, now Climate Pledge on the other hand, that is a lovely place to see a show

5/12/91 at Shoreline is a standout show for me. Recording is A+ and just love the mellow feel and flow of these Spring/Summer 91 shows. Sound is an upgrade for sure.

71 Port Chester keeps the streak alive for top notch releases from this run. Really enjoyable.

You're right 1stshow, leading off with "Add New Comment" is kinda confusing and backwards. Made more sense when it followed "Comments". Probably/hopefully just a temporary housekeeping move as they reinsert the "Comments" tabs into new product pages. Or whatever. . .

Sort of emblematic of the world we live in where everyone's talking and nobody's listening.

My wife gifted me this incredible box set for my forthcoming 50th birthday. What a present, indeed! What a blessing.

Speaking of blessings, just want to say that this community has been such an honor to be a part of since I discovered the music in the early '90s.

I was in high school and a very good friend of mine handed me a TDK 90 minute cassette with Set II of Oakland 12/28/79 on it. From there, I was so hooked. I had recently gotten into prog rock, and I thought the 'Terrapin' suite was just as progressive as what the English bands were putting out at the time. The 'Rhythm Devils' on that show really pulled me in too - the bird whistles, etc! I missed the 1994-1995 tours, as I was finishing high school / starting college, never could quite make it happen. But I finally got out there after that, I saw the first iteration of The Other Ones and Further Fest and Phil and Friends and Dead and Co, etc. What a trip.

From there, I went deep into tape trading, sending and receiving cassettes from across the country. I miss that scene! It was such a positive place to be. I read every Relix magazine cover to cover, always focusing on the tapers sections. Anyone that still trades physical media, feel free to hit me up.

Hope you all ease into the weekend with music and joy.

The last show of the tour before heading to Rainbow Theatre, London (plus the one Grugahalle show) and also, effectively, Phil's birthday show.

It's sort of a unique one in that Stranger > Sugaree represents a couple of handfuls of times played in that sequence, and Alabama > Greatest Story to open the 2nd set exists just a handful of times itself.

In particular, Althea > Passenger then China Cat > Rider to close set one is pretty d*mn sweet ...

Went on to the 7/11/81 Alpine Set II partial from ETR and then tracked down the rest of Set II - Stella Blue > Miracle > Going Down the Road > Saturday Night. E: Brokedown. Only circulates as an audience - listened to the recent CM remaster which uses an audience source after Other One. A solid pull of a hot show. Stella sounded awesome.

8/23/80 is a fine show - of course the first at Alpine which quickly became a classic summer shed in the Midwest. Slightly on the short side - they had a show the next night in Grand Rapids so maybe thinking a bit of travel time. Like Alpine until ETR, no circulating SBD of GR but I seem to remember a very nice audience pull being available and its a great show. Alpine was right on the heels of three hot nights at the Uptown (friend there, I missed.) Long thought that the first night of that run should be released but the circulating SBD is sorta lousy so who knows. And of course that summer '80 tour started out with the legendary Mississippi River Festival show on 8/16. From the reviews, show got hit by a real frog choker rain Set II and was very much electric. No SBD for that either - would love to hear that if it survived the deluge.

Edit - been a long while since I've posted on the ETR thread and I want to say I really have enjoyed this box!

    Yesterday's ETR Listen

The Alpine Valley 8-23-80 (BC's 4th show he said) was a really good show. Solid most of the way through but maybe not amazing? Then wham, that ending series of songs just kept getting more supercharged. Must have left you guys smiling walking out BC.
But I'm here to rave about Hampton 5-1-81. Yes, I was under the influence by then late yesterday but I was completely taken aback by Jerry's wicked speed and accuracy. We all know he got faster as he went along but by the 90s there just wasn't as much in those runs as there used to be. But here in '81 he has it all. Every riff in the book on that Promised Land (GOAT? Certainly top 10), and the Uncle and Big River blew me away. It isn't just the speed and accuracy but all those mini fills and chords just cascading endlessly. I don't think I realized he had that in '81. This is why we all check out every show we can, regardless of era. You just never know when something like that will appear. Man he was on!
    Cheers

I missed out Enjoying the Ride as it sold out so quickly, but have jnow ust picked up a sealed set to find out the limited edition number is Miracle/6000. Can anyone tell me what this means please? I am assuming it was a promo copy that has been flipped. And is there a download of the Cassette? I got rid of my tape deck 20 years ago>
