When the ride begins in '65 at a pizza parlor in the South Bay under another moniker, who would have imagined? When "Who Are You? Where Are You? How Are You?" became "Won't you come with me?" and, ultimately, "Where does the time go?," who would have thought? 60 years on, we're celebrating the Grateful Dead's Diamond Era. Here we go back to the beginning, to the original "Follow," and uncover the wonders of getting on the bus all over again.

ENJOYING THE RIDE is a sweeping 60-CD collection that maps an epic cross-country road trip along the “Heady Highway” with stops at storied venues where the music, the moment, and the magic of the Dead reliably converged. Spanning 25 years of legendary live performances, this expansive compendium spotlights defining shows from 1969 to 1994 at 20 venues that consistently inspired the band to new heights.

With the exception of a few tracks from earlier releases, virtually all of the music on ENJOYING THE RIDE is previously unreleased, with more than 450 tracks and over 60 hours of music. Of the 20 shows in the collection, 17 are presented in full, with some featuring additional material from the same venue. The remaining three — Fillmore West, Fillmore East, and Boston Music Hall — are curated from multiple performances at each venue, capturing key moments on those legendary stages.

These performances were originally recorded by Owsley “Bear” Stanley, Betty Cantor-Jackson, Kidd Candelario, Dan Healy, and John Cutler. David Glasser and Jeffrey Norman restored and mastered the performances, with select ones using Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction for optimal sound quality.

It's all housed in a custom keepsake box inspired by the experience of traveling from city to city to see the Dead at legendary venues across America. Inside, a beautifully detailed tour guide features liner notes by Jesse Jarnow (author and co-host of the Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast) and a producer’s note from Lemieux, an essay by the Owsley Stanley Foundation, and more. The set is richly illustrated with photos, including many taken at the shows featured in the collection.

Due May 30th, this one is limited to 6,000 individually numbered copies and exclusive to Dead.net. We invite you to take this not-so-little piece of the road home.

I've skipped most of the DaP vinyl, except Vol 1 (always buy a vol 1) and Vol 23 (Eugene 78). They are quality and worth the money if you really dig the show.

Now, Light into Ashes is an amazing listen, partial show which is why I suspect it hasn't sold out, but its a God damn Dark Star, and a 72 at that, come on, not sold out!

Buit at least I'm enjoying the tunes.

A vinyl edition of Dave's Fifth? Yes, please. Total no brainer.

Although considering how much I spent on Dead stuff this year, maybe it should've been, you know, a brainer?

There's the ETR box, not to mention the DiP 4 Real Gone vinyl, not to mention the Dave's subscription, not to mention the BfA 50th, and, uh, also the BfA t-shirt. Oh and that copy of Dave's 11 I found used.

Well, they say money can't buy happiness. But it can buy music, and if music isn't happiness I don't know what is.

.....that was. Beautiful.
You know what else is beautiful? '70's sitcoms.
Just started the Mary Tyler Moore show with my wife. Wholesome. Funny. Outstanding. Simpler times. *sigh*
Vinyl prices are decent. A record back in the mid-80's was $6 - $8 each. Currently averaging $25 each. Accounting for inflation from then to now, they're the same price.

I can't remember if I mentioned this 50th Anniversary reissue of Deep Purple's Made in Japan recently, so I'll mention it again just in case. The original album , and all three shows that the original was made up of. Really good - most of the tracks that made the final cut are from 8/16/72, which is probably the best show. But the hairiest is the 17th. It's already sold out in Britain, so if it's still for sale in The States, and you have any interest, I'd snap it up now.

38 years ago I was up at the Greek Theatre to see The Jerry Garcia Band and Bonnie Raitt put on a show. Bonnie got up and joined Garcia for a few songs during his 2nd set. I was pretty tired out as I had been up at the Electric on the Eel show the day before and was actually pretty beat. Garcia and Raitt put on a great show.

35 years ago I was out at Shoreline on Labor Day, to see The Garcia Band and Los Lobos play. Great show, Garcia's set is out on DVD , well worth picking up if you don't have it. The Grateful Dead were set to play 3 shows but Brent's death had them cancel the shows and Garcia played a show instead.

Yeah, apparently they add S&H back in if you use the coupon. Or at least, I got charged for it. I didn't see the posts here about free shipping until I had placed my order, and now I can't "simulate" a new order with the same coupon code.

Got a note earlier today that my Dave's Picks vinyl has shipped. Or at least, a shipping label has been created. We'll see how long it takes to wend it's way north from California.

Annual vinyl sale!
The only GD on the list.
6-LP vinyl on sale for $119.99.
Down from $149.99
That's better!
Believe it if you need it.

Hey, the comment thing moved back to the bottom of the page.

The Dave's Pick's vol 5 vinyl just arrived a few minutes ago (approx 12 pm PDT). The outer packaging was in pretty rough shape for a two day trip with FedEx and the initial packaging by GD was nothing to be impressed by. However, the box set itself appears to be in good shape. Number 2757/5000.

Gulp. Mine will have to travel half way around the world before it ends up at my house.

Got a notice this morning (which I believe to have been Sept 5) saying my copy DaP 5 vinyl was out for delivery on Sept 4 with an estimated arrival day of Sept 3. I got confused, so I listened to the music play.

Anyway, it arrived safe and sound and I'm giving it a spin. A damned fine HCS, as many have said, and the vinyl sounds great.

A lot of people were wondering how many copies of this one got pressed, so I will mention: mine says 0980/5000. So probably 5000.

was really a surprise to me and one of my favorites in the box. That whole second set is soooo psychedelic, what with the Dark Star AND TOO AND that incredible Space with the Handsome Cabin Boy or whatever it is, AND Days Between AND Lucy. Don't know what got into 'em that night. Did Owlsley pay a surprise visit? Just glad it's on tape.

I still haven't listened to every last disc of ETR. Part of the problem is that unlike some of our friends here I don't listen in any kind of order and I don't keep track. So I've listened to the Cap Centre a few times, and Berkeley and Red Rocks and Nassau more than once, but I don't think I've done Hartford '81 and I know didn't make it through the Frost show (because I couldn't be bothered to suffer through such poor quality audio when I had a whole box full of excellent stuff to listen to, but I'll get to it sometime.)

I thought this setlist sounded familiar.
Was GD Hour #239, aired 4-19-93. Fresh!
Partial show of course.
Might have been the 1st time I heard Days Between (3rd performance). I was fascinated and played it over and over until I could write down all the lyrics. (pre- internet, lol)
Cheers

Add Hampton with that Hartford and you've got a nice duo no doubt. I've played them a bunch on their own and made a damn fine mixed up super-chop show of both them together.
Right now I'm diggin' on the Landover 1993 ETR show for all the aforementioned reasons as well as the 1991 Shoreline ETR show along with the new Dave's Pick #55 to boot! Lemme tell ya, they all make a fine super long play for me, straight through or shuffled.

***edit***
Also I was playing that sublime "Days In Between" from 3/17/93 on pretty heavy rotation about a month ago.

Finished the ETR box today. I'm pleased that I got one. Now on to Dave's 55.

Was digging through some old stuff in my house looking for something from the past. Ran across an old Maxell labeled Spain 10/19/81 set 2. Sure glad I didn't throw this away. It made me think of the fall Europe run. 13 shows, with the last one in Spain on 10/19/81. I seem to recall Blair Jackson writing about this run (including the Spring Europe shows) and that the tapes were not in the vault.
Wonder if that is still the case.

If you google Blair Jackson and the forgotten European tour it should take you to his golden road blog.

He does not mention the tapes are not in the vault, just that the soundboards mostly sucked, no Phil and no Bobby. I don't know for sure, but I suspect the master cassettes are in the vault.

His blog is worth a read and both '81 tours are worth a listen. 81 is that year where they played pretty good, but the soundboard quality just wasn't always there. I think of that Pen State and Barton Hall Road Trips, they seem to fall into this category. A little hallow sounding and tinny. But so did the October Atlanta show which became Dave's Picks vol 8, a classic matrix (thank you Dr. Bob). The tinny soundboard mixed with the practically perfect audience sounds great. I'm not going to disparage Healy, I assume he did the best he could with what he had and the decision to make the house tapes the way they were was a band decision, likely driven by financial and business realities at the time. But it was a mistake. There are huge gaps where the quality of the soundboards does not match the quality of the performances, and hindsight being 20/20 it was a missed opportunity.

Oh well, at least we have the subpar tapes, which do give a glance into what could have been. It's all we have and 81 had some moments worth listening to. Maybe one day AI will be able to clean these up and make them presentable (and boy what a shitstorm of a controversy that will be if it ever happens). I look forward to that. Imagine the shitstorm of AI turning the Donna Wales on PITB into serene Siren-like melodies aka Homer's the Odessy. You might laugh, but this might very well be coming one day.

Less controversial would be to at least imagine if some of these 80's recordings were Betty quality soundboards and what that would do to he legacy of the band. If every single show was recorded to the standards of E72 and FW69, I bet the 80's would suddenly not suck so much (for the record, I do not think 80's shows suck at all. Many are excellent).

I would like to see more Matrix releases from this era. DaP 8 was a success. Can we at least have one more or perhaps a bakers dozen? Oh, and more 68, 70 and 74 just because. As for AI cleaning this stuff up, even if it sounded better or great, except for that one curiosity listen, I think I will revert back to the stuff on the archive, warts and all. An AI imagined remaster would just not have that genuine sound and feel. I'm happy with what they actually recorded and thankful we have the tapes, exactly as they are.

I enjoyed the show I saw at Wembley on 10/3/81, although that doesn't say anything about the recordings of it. I can't remember much about it - China Cat/Rider towards the end of the first set, Stranger to open the 2nd and Morning Dew towards the end. As they say - if you can remember it, you weren't really there. That's my excuse anyway.

The idea of using A1 to iron out imperfections doesn't sit well. Although, thinking about it, a fare few live albums of the late 60's and 70's were doctored to make them sound better, or at least to remove some mistakes. Europe 72 being a case in point. I seem to remember reading that for The Who's Live At Hull release, the bass playing was inaudible on the first few tracks, so they used what they had from Live At Leeds instead.

I think the sound is fine on this show. Yes, its a little jarring when you go from a crispy board to this show, but give yourself time to adjust to the differnce in sound. Once you do this, I think folks who give this show another chance will be glad they did!

Really hot playing going on at the 8/20/83 show!!

The Grateful Dead played their best music when Pig Pen was in the band. They were never the same after he left. Favorite Pig Pen songs, Easy Wind, and Alligator, but all his songs were cool.

....Keystone for the first time in a while. What is that incessant buzzing sound during Ain't No Woman and I think La La? Is that Saunders?
Make both those tracks pretty much unlistenable. Instant skip.
You know that scene from Jaws with Quint and the chalkboard? Its kinda like that.

Went on to the 7/11/81 Alpine Set II partial from ETR and then tracked down the rest of Set II - Stella Blue > Miracle > Going Down the Road > Saturday Night. E: Brokedown. Only circulates as an audience - listened to the recent CM remaster which uses an audience source after Other One. A solid pull of a hot show. Stella sounded awesome.

8/23/80 is a fine show - of course the first at Alpine which quickly became a classic summer shed in the Midwest. Slightly on the short side - they had a show the next night in Grand Rapids so maybe thinking a bit of travel time. Like Alpine until ETR, no circulating SBD of GR but I seem to remember a very nice audience pull being available and its a great show. Alpine was right on the heels of three hot nights at the Uptown (friend there, I missed.) Long thought that the first night of that run should be released but the circulating SBD is sorta lousy so who knows. And of course that summer '80 tour started out with the legendary Mississippi River Festival show on 8/16. From the reviews, show got hit by a real frog choker rain Set II and was very much electric. No SBD for that either - would love to hear that if it survived the deluge.
    -
Edit - been a long while since I've posted on the ETR thread and I want to say I really have enjoyed this box!

    Yesterday's ETR Listen

The Alpine Valley 8-23-80 (BC's 4th show he said) was a really good show. Solid most of the way through but maybe not amazing? Then wham, that ending series of songs just kept getting more supercharged. Must have left you guys smiling walking out BC.
But I'm here to rave about Hampton 5-1-81. Yes, I was under the influence by then late yesterday but I was completely taken aback by Jerry's wicked speed and accuracy. We all know he got faster as he went along but by the 90s there just wasn't as much in those runs as there used to be. But here in '81 he has it all. Every riff in the book on that Promised Land (GOAT? Certainly top 10), and the Uncle and Big River blew me away. It isn't just the speed and accuracy but all those mini fills and chords just cascading endlessly. I don't think I realized he had that in '81. This is why we all check out every show we can, regardless of era. You just never know when something like that will appear. Man he was on!

I missed out Enjoying the Ride as it sold out so quickly, but have jnow ust picked up a sealed set to find out the limited edition number is Miracle/6000. Can anyone tell me what this means please? I am assuming it was a promo copy that has been flipped. And is there a download of the Cassette? I got rid of my tape deck 20 years ago>
