When the ride begins in '65 at a pizza parlor in the South Bay under another moniker, who would have imagined? When "Who Are You? Where Are You? How Are You?" became "Won't you come with me?" and, ultimately, "Where does the time go?," who would have thought? 60 years on, we're celebrating the Grateful Dead's Diamond Era. Here we go back to the beginning, to the original "Follow," and uncover the wonders of getting on the bus all over again.

ENJOYING THE RIDE is a sweeping 60-CD collection that maps an epic cross-country road trip along the “Heady Highway” with stops at storied venues where the music, the moment, and the magic of the Dead reliably converged. Spanning 25 years of legendary live performances, this expansive compendium spotlights defining shows from 1969 to 1994 at 20 venues that consistently inspired the band to new heights.

With the exception of a few tracks from earlier releases, virtually all of the music on ENJOYING THE RIDE is previously unreleased, with more than 450 tracks and over 60 hours of music. Of the 20 shows in the collection, 17 are presented in full, with some featuring additional material from the same venue. The remaining three — Fillmore West, Fillmore East, and Boston Music Hall — are curated from multiple performances at each venue, capturing key moments on those legendary stages.

These performances were originally recorded by Owsley “Bear” Stanley, Betty Cantor-Jackson, Kidd Candelario, Dan Healy, and John Cutler. David Glasser and Jeffrey Norman restored and mastered the performances, with select ones using Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction for optimal sound quality.

It's all housed in a custom keepsake box inspired by the experience of traveling from city to city to see the Dead at legendary venues across America. Inside, a beautifully detailed tour guide features liner notes by Jesse Jarnow (author and co-host of the Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast) and a producer’s note from Lemieux, an essay by the Owsley Stanley Foundation, and more. The set is richly illustrated with photos, including many taken at the shows featured in the collection.

Due May 30th, this one is limited to 6,000 individually numbered copies and exclusive to Dead.net. We invite you to take this not-so-little piece of the road home.

I'd gladly buy anything Europe 81 related (or the same timeframe). Maybe just a compilation, if possible, plus any partial or salvageable shows? I wonder why the Essen video still hasnt been released too?

Using AI to clean it up could be controversial. I have very mixed feelings about a holographic Jerry dancing along to Cornell '77 in my living room someday. I once bought a "Teddy Ruxpin" at a yard sale for a similar purpose. It didn't work. So, I tried a Bobby song. And still, no dice. Maybe Phil?

....I usually take indeed for the musical folks whom have passed on, mostly on their birthdays but sometimes also on other significant anniversaries of time or just odd occasions of memoriam.
Yesterday I was on a grueling job and didn't get a chance to reflect on Pig. {Rest his Blusey Soul} When I do the song "Easy Wind" is also one of my favorites, "Hard To Handle" is always a blast too. For the song with the most rueful motif though I will cue up "Empty Pages" for the perfect vibe.

Someone on the interwebs pointed out that we are on the cusp of the Grateful Dead now being gone longer than they were present (with that number of days being ~11,022 days from the first Warlocks performance to the final GD Show).

30 years on each side, with our side now and forever becoming Furthr and Furthr from The Inception.

How lucky those of us are to be here during such halcyon days.
And the footprint is forever.

Such a Long Long Time to Be Gone
And a Short Time to be There.

Be Well, People.

My favorite Pigpen moments are from Chateau d'HerouvilIe 6/21/71.

Everyone knows about this show, they flew out on a whim, festival plans went to shit, settled in at the Chateau, set up their gear, had some red wine and played some music. Pig fronted Hard to Handle and Big Boss Man and it looks like a good time was had by all. An hour including Hard to Handle was caught on film, which is probably why it sits fondly in my memory. It's a classic.

Time flies by.. memories fade.. I listen to the GD almost every day and the days I miss don't burn as bright. It seems about right they have been gone for about as long as they existed as the "Grateful Dead." Glad I got to see the shows I did, it sucks I missed some good shows I could have caught, but hey that's life.

Listen to the river sing sweet songs to rock my soul

Not sure where else to discuss, but thought this may be fun..............I am reading a Roger Corman autobio/memoir (1990), and in it he says the GOGD were supposed to play a concert at a showing of this movie (see Subject Line) at a drive-in theater in Albequerque, which would have been 1970. Quote......"At the last minute, they (GOGD) demanded a huge increase in money. We got Country Joe and the Fish instead"..............has anyone ever heard this story??.....it's new to me...............going through my DeadBase IX, and as close as they were may have been was Texas during movie-shooting time

Amazon got stuff here on release date.

(live stuff sounds good)

Anyway, box come today, should have lp and cd.

I ordered the picture disc from the dead. The regular album from Amazon.

Opened box cd and picture disc.

Upon closer inspection found the amazon page had the picture of the regular disc, but the print said picture disc. I have the picture coming from the dead.

It's hard to return stuff to the dead folks, but Jeff sure makes it easy.

I return the picture disc to amazon and order the regular album (it's green!)

Picture sent back same day, green coming today.

Why I love amazon.

How does your copy of 4-26-75 sound?
Do you think major improvements can be made when they clean it up?

I’m not preordering anything, but will probably buy the Blu-ray after release date.

Haven’t checked yet if my HD holds 4-26-75.

Note that the limited edition ashtray has already sold out.

Dennis, glad to hear that 4-26-75 sounds good.
There’s a Wikipedia page on the guy who recorded the show, Mike The Mic. Apparently quite legendary. Looks like his recordings are on the Archive.

Is taking the long way home.
Mail Innovations sent it from CA right past me in CO again and to Kansas City again. Still does not say it is in the hands of USPS yet. At least 2nd time a GD shipment went the round about way to K.C. before heading back my way. Does not exactly sound efficient but I am not a logistics expert, lol.

UPDATE - (9-16) Still shadowboxing the apocalypse and wandering the land in K.C. UPS Innovations still in possession. Not sure where it gets handed off to USPS.

1STSHOW70878 you are correct both of these are going way out of the way too get to my home When I check its status It changed each day UPS sometimes USPS sometimes I wish they had an option for better shipping I would certainly pay for it

BFA 50th - BFA is my second favorite studio album (after Anthem), but CD’s 2 and 3 are where its at. 3-23-75 sounds way better than any copy I’ve ever had.

JGB Warfield - Spectacular, and I’m only on CD4.

It’s been a really good year so far for releases.
On deck: DaP56, DaP 2026 subscription announcement, BFRSD.

Great release. Unlike the last two studio albums, this one has stayed in steady rotation with me over the years, and this new version sounds superb. Timeless.
Great bonus material too - that Blues For Allah jam from 3/23/75 is amazing. Talk about psychedelic.

The BfA 50 release really is nicely done. The CD sounds great, although I think this particular record always sounded good, and the bonus material is both illuminating and also just fun to listen to. This was always one of my favorite studio albums, and it's even better now. I even bought the shirt: hope the tie dye colors don't rinse out in the wash as has sometimes happened before.

Also: it never dawned on me until just yesterday that Mickey is not in the portrait of the band that was on the BfA cover. This despite having stared at the lp cover for countless stony hours back in the '70s. I wonder what the deal was? Was he not officially back in the band at that time? Someone knows this.

I was just thinking last night that the current bounty of released material has stalled talk of 56!

Usually this will be the talk of the board!

I'm gonna go with 1983-04-16 - Brendan Byrne Arena - Meadowlands, NJ. Never gonna happen, but greatest LL Rain!

(that's not opinion, that's FACT! :-)

was the date of my first show...it was a free show in Elysian Park, Los Angeles...just a bit aways from the Police Academy and Dodger Stadium...I was 16, two months shy of my 17th Birthday and also the weekend before my Senior Year in high scholl started...it was a co-bill with the Airplane so lotsa fun...I remember seeing Peter Tork dressed in buckskins there....

Something very cosy about BFA. “Rounded” sound overall. Probably one of their best in terms of production, even the loosey goosey is tight but not choking. Built to Last - in production terms - is the absolute nuts and for me, BFA being an entirely different horse is up there with the consistency of overall mix.

BFA is the one that finally hooked me. Live Dead was my ticket to ride, but Blue’s was the soothing clickety-clack of the rails to the horizon and all stops in between.

That said, I think Built is criminally underrated and is a superb mainstream album with the trappings of its time in space. Oddly, In The Dark is almost the other side of the spectrum for me. It feels less cohesive, more a collection of some hit and some miss tunes in no particular order, whereas Built feels more deliberate and intentional. I know, it flies in the face of what we think we know about the awkward band dynamics that gestated it… But there you are.

One final note seeing as I’ve been away for so long and probably won’t be writing again any time soon (Time Out, Just caught the MIDI Banjo on the 93 Enjoying The Ride show!)

Back in the room… I for one could very well live without 50th editions of Go to Heaven and Shakedown. Even Terrapin could be a slog simply because it appears all of the good stuff is on the release anyway, and the album remasters box of years ago already supplements Terrapin as much as one could reasonably expect.

‘Heaven is just obnoxious and Shakedown …. Well…. Shakedown. Meh.

Went on to the 7/11/81 Alpine Set II partial from ETR and then tracked down the rest of Set II - Stella Blue > Miracle > Going Down the Road > Saturday Night. E: Brokedown. Only circulates as an audience - listened to the recent CM remaster which uses an audience source after Other One. A solid pull of a hot show. Stella sounded awesome.

8/23/80 is a fine show - of course the first at Alpine which quickly became a classic summer shed in the Midwest. Slightly on the short side - they had a show the next night in Grand Rapids so maybe thinking a bit of travel time. Like Alpine until ETR, no circulating SBD of GR but I seem to remember a very nice audience pull being available and its a great show. Alpine was right on the heels of three hot nights at the Uptown (friend there, I missed.) Long thought that the first night of that run should be released but the circulating SBD is sorta lousy so who knows. And of course that summer '80 tour started out with the legendary Mississippi River Festival show on 8/16. From the reviews, show got hit by a real frog choker rain Set II and was very much electric. No SBD for that either - would love to hear that if it survived the deluge.
    -
Edit - been a long while since I've posted on the ETR thread and I want to say I really have enjoyed this box!

    Yesterday's ETR Listen

The Alpine Valley 8-23-80 (BC's 4th show he said) was a really good show. Solid most of the way through but maybe not amazing? Then wham, that ending series of songs just kept getting more supercharged. Must have left you guys smiling walking out BC.
But I'm here to rave about Hampton 5-1-81. Yes, I was under the influence by then late yesterday but I was completely taken aback by Jerry's wicked speed and accuracy. We all know he got faster as he went along but by the 90s there just wasn't as much in those runs as there used to be. But here in '81 he has it all. Every riff in the book on that Promised Land (GOAT? Certainly top 10), and the Uncle and Big River blew me away. It isn't just the speed and accuracy but all those mini fills and chords just cascading endlessly. I don't think I realized he had that in '81. This is why we all check out every show we can, regardless of era. You just never know when something like that will appear. Man he was on!
