"Welcome to the 10th year of the Dave's Picks series! We're amazed and humbled that this community of Dave's Picks fans keeps growing, and we just wanted to let you know how much we sincerely appreciate your support of and interest in the series. We started in 2012 with 12,000 of each release, and now we've more doubled that, with 25,000 in 2021. Wow! We keep working as hard as we possibly can to bring you the best, most exciting Grateful Dead shows in the vault. Our 2020 releases included music from 1977, 1974, 1984, and the latest, biggest release yet in the series, the two complete Hartford shows from 1987. Looking ahead, we've selected two exceptional, A+ Dead shows for Vol. 37 (more on that in the video below) and 38, as well as the Bonus Disc that will come with Vol. 38. Big year ahead! As we head into the 10th year of the series, there's no end in sight. We love what we do, and have loads of plans and ideas for the next few years. Onward to more great music!"

Times may be trying but the music has never and will never stop! Keep the momentum going by doing the Dead all year long with a Dave's Picks 2021 subscription. We're taking the production run up one final time - to 25,000 - for each of the four Dave's Picks 2021 releases. We'll also be doing things a wee bit differently this year - subscribers will be the first to receive their Dave's Picks. A la carte sales will go up on street date (no more pre-orders) and if you don't subscribe - we highly encourage you to - you'll want to be ready and waiting because these releases sell out within hours. Hours - no hyperbole.

In addition to the four releases in 2021, totaling 12 CDs, you’ll also get the subscription exclusive bonus disc, which has proven to be one of the most highly sought-after collectables we release, and free domestic shipping. Subscriber bonus discs will not be released outside of this offer. Early bird subscribers can nab a sub at $99.98 (regular pricing will be $115.92).

Thank you Daverock! I am lacking an email from Real Gone about this one, so your post had me rush right over there, and my heart sank when I saw SOLD OUT, but then clicked anyway and saw it should go onsale around 2/1, so just gotta be quick with the order next Monday. They did up the number to 2000 copies from 1500 for DiP 26, but that ain't a lot. Look forward to getting that one in my collection. I have Portland 5/19/74 on its way across the ocean now.

Speaking of ABB/Dead, with the ABB having a new record company that is releasing archival material, wonder if now the time is ripe for Kirk West (ABB archivist) and Dave Lemieux to become buddies like Dick and Kirk, and maybe work out a box with Fillmore 1970 material, RFK '73, and maybe Watkins Glen or ABB NYE 1973 with Jerry and Bill the Drummer. Dillon Stadium 1972 also featured an ABB sit in. If they both produced a box, that wouldn't necessarily have to count against a box set for this year, right?

The theory makes a lot of sense, but I hope it's not the truth. Between Reckoning and the 2019 RSD release, there's hardly any need for more of that material. Even those two releases feel slightly redundant in my collection.

And speaking of Allmans/Dead, I have been dipping into the February 1970 Fillmore East run today. That would make a good box, too.

Here's food for thought from our long-lost friend "Kate," who used the runner symbol as her avatar. She posted this list from some (unknown to me) version of the returned Bettys on the SH Forum. My notes are in brackets, based on a Wikipedia listing of the expanded Reckoning set issued in 2004. (Original reckoning issued 1981.)

    1980 - 11 REELS
09-27-80 SF CA, 2 x 7” REELS Nagra 1/2trk 7.5ips Acoustic [nothing used from this date on Reckoning]
10-04-80 SF CA, 2 x 7” REELS Nagra 1/2trk 7.5ips Acoustic [nothing used from this date on Reckoning]
10-06-80 SF CA, 2 x 7” REELS Nagra 1/2trk 7.5ips Acoustic [nothing used from this date on Reckoning]
    10-09-80 SF CA, 2 x 7” REELS Nagra 1/2trk 7.5ips Acoustic [released last year]
    10-10-80 SF CA, 1 x 7” REEL Nagra 1/2trk 7.5ips Acoustic [released last year]
10-11-80 SF CA, 1 x 7” REEL Nagra 1/2trk 7.5ips Acoustic [two trx released on Reckoning]
10-13-80 SF CA, 1 x 7” REEL Nagra 1/2trk 7.5ips Acoustic [two trx released on Reckoning]

That's five soundboard shows (minus 4 trx) that haven't seen release.

    Cassettes
9/25/80 Warfield = 1 [nothing used from this date on Reckoning]
10/9/80 Warfield = 3 (labeled as 10/7) [soundboard released last year]
10/13/80 Warfield = 3 [two tracks released on Reckoning]
10/14/80 Warfield = 4 [four tracks released on Reckoning]

That's eight cassettes of three shows, minus 6 tracks already issued.

So, if this is accurate, DL actually as a shit-ton of acoustic '80 material on hand. The Compendium only lists audience tapes for the intervening NO shows. But if there are soundboards, that adds to the trove.

2019's RSD release reflects the fact that the acoustic Warfield sets were about 9-10 songs each. So the soundboards listed above would hold ~45 songs, of which four have been released. That leaves ~40 songs in the can. I do notice that one reel held the entire 10-9-80 set, whereas the 10-10-80 set is captured on two reels. So my math may be off.

On the cassette front, how much music is on 8 cassettes is anyone's guess. If I suppose those are 90 minute tapes, they'd get an entire set per cassette, with possible cuts due to the tape flip. But if 8 cassettes hold three entire shows or 27 songs minus six already released, that's ~20 more songs in the can.

So, this speculative post would suppose possibly 60 unreleased songs. (~80, if the NO shows were taped.) Now, to the curating... imagine that there's a few clunkers in there. Shave it down to 50 songs. Then there's the question of the wisdom of song repeats. If the curation is done chronologically, akin to the Owsley Stanley Foundation archival approach, then song repeats are no obstacle. (In fact, then you add in the 10 tracks that have been released, which would appear in context in their respective shows.) Still, if you go with 10 songs/tracks per disc, that's 5 discs. 7 discs if the NO shows exist in good form.

Would DL go with a 4-5-7 disc 'box'? Seems possible, even if it's not this year's premier ('72) box. In my obviously overheated imagination -- gawd, a year of house arrest has me in its maw -- here's my wish list for 2021:

    April '78 coming soon.
    9-7 & 9-8-73 w/bonus due in April. (I caught 9-8-73 in person, so yea!)
    (4) disc mini-box of Warfield acoustic performances; RSD release?
    (4) show/(12) disc med-sized box from fall '72
Two more DP's to finish the subscription year.

Coffee very strong today, I'd hazard to guess.

Well actually no time. I ordered via PayPal. Boom! I am looking forward to #37 and beyond. Dave L did not tell us the what the bonus material will be that is included on #37. It will be fun to guess on that but he said it was about an hour and a half from an under-the-radar show from this tour. We should run a poll for fun.

Dave also mentioned that Mr. Norman is working on the 2021 box and DaP #38 as well. The surprise is fun but I am a spazola so the wait gets to me too.

I...declare...a 1985 show(s)! (for any Office fans out there).

As long as we’re requesting an official release for our first show, mine was 2/19/91. Come on, release some 1991 Dead.

On second thought, forget it. It’ll never happen. I had a great time though. I was 17 & finally got to see the Dead. The Greatest Story Ever Told sticks with me.

Only got to see them one more time with Jerry. 11/3/91 at the Bill Graham benefit in Golden Gate Park. After a few songs, John Fogerty came out and the Dead backed him on four CCR songs. Then after more Dead tunes, Forever Young with Neil Young. I do have an import cd of the radio broadcast, but once again, I doubt there will ever be an official release of that show either.

So happy the Dead keep releasing great shows. Even if I wasn’t there, I can still listen, dance, and shake my bones!

Oh Dave I forgot, you have to release the October 1974 Winteland shows audio and video. I had a blast at my first show 12/8/93, though maybe the performance isn't quite up to "official release"-quality. Well perhaps for Dave's Pick 100, LOL. In any case, really enjoying the quality of recent releases. I just subscribed for the 2021 series.

Subscription acquired.

I've had this show uploaded to my phone for a while. I haven't listened to it but I like April 78. At this point I guess I'll just wait for the real version. Odd setlist, but definitely looking forward to the second 78 Mississippi Half-Step and The Morning Dew of course. Dave really talked up the Brown-Eyed Women, and that's one of the songs out of the 1 drummer era that I think actually got better post hiatus. Strange that there's no Scarlet Fire, Estimated Eyes, or Franklin's Tower. NobMusic Never Stopped orvTerrapin Station. Odd setlist

Billy the Kid - great track, thanks. That's the way to do it ! Also, looking at your recent suggestions for upcoming releases, if ever Dave lets go, you would be a good candidate for the throne.

Speaking of which, I'm not too cock a hoop over Dave's 37. It looks better than the last two-but that's not saying much. Haven't we already had two from April1978? I wonder if he has ever heard anything from 1968.

This show gets some fine shout out's on heady version. http://headyversion.com/show/479/grateful-dead/1978-04-15/

As for the show to fill out the rest of the disc, I'm going with 4/16/78. My guess is he'll save 4/21 for a stand alone release as that show was originally slated for a 3-show box treatment with Normal and Nashville and those 2 shows have already been put out.

I am a bit surprised that they went with this show as the first of 2021 Subscription Plan though despite the high ratings it gets from those that attended.

I am looking forward to a re-listen since it has been awhile for me on this one...

Have a Grateful Day all! :-)

I subscribed as I do every year (except the 1st ... got Dave's 1, 2, 3 off eBay over the years ... still need Dave's 4, the other William and Mary). 4 15 78 is probably a great show ... but, this is the 3rd Dave's from April 78 ... this is a short show ... honestly, I felt deflated when Dave announced this show. When we have historic gems like 5 26 73 still unreleased, and the last two Dave's are from the 1980's, a short 1978 show just doesn't strike me as First Release of the Year worthy. Now if the second release in 2021 is also uninspired (like say Dave's 22, 12 7 71), and Picks 3 and 4 of 2021 don't yield something like 5 26 73, then it's shaping up to be something of a down year for Dave's Picks. If Dave's 38 is at the level of 6 23 74 and bonus, then it's all good ... but if not, :-(
Imho ✌

I sure do hope they save this one to get the complete show treatment. Just my preference, but I always really liked this show.

Yea, April 78 is well represented in the Dave's Picks series, but so is 77. I have listened to this show before, but not for a while. I also expect they will do magic on the sound quality. An odd choice perhaps but I will keep an open mind. I am reserving a healthy dose of optimism for 2021 in general.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.. I haven't ponied up yet for the subscription, I am certain to get to it before the early bird pricing expires..

I was definitely expecting something from the Kill Zone 1969-1974. At this point in time, I am glad it's not another 77 show. There Isn't much left in 77 I'm interested in right now except those March and December Winterland shows.

While it is the 3rd April 78 show, there are some things is a bright side:

* The 3 set lists offer a lot of varier, so that's a plus in my book

* It's been 6 years since the last one came out

* April was a strong month in terms of tightness from night to night. They hadn't quite turned that corner of unpredictableness.

* Dave contends the set list comes off strong.

On the downside I have no interest in the long Rhythm Devils, especially in short show.

KJOHNDUFF1: I like the direction of this discussion on DaP V37 bonus material. 4/18 set 2 would be cool. It is on Dave's radar as he's played quite a bit of it on the Taper's Section. I also like the idea of a complete Set 2 on 1 disc, and you're right that set is like 82 minutes.

Nice!

Also I agree with Jim I'd like to see 4/16/78 get the full meal deal treatment.
I'm pretty sure Dave wouldn't break up that lil beauty now would you Dave?

April 78 is a strong month.

Cool thing about this announcement, got me wanting to hear '78, doesn't always happen. Dusted off 2/4/78, hot show! I love Jerry's voice in '78. It seems like the laryngitis in January forever changed his timbre. And the rest of '78 has a real unique quality.

Good Stuff, getting excited for the Capitol Theatre '71 & Hartford '87.

Now, what should I listen to in the meantime. Hmmm...

The Good Ole....
I’m with you and Jim - I can’t see them chopping that show up for bonus material. That’s one of the tent-pole shows for that tour and would make a perfect full-treatment DaP release on it’s own someday. Whatever is is, I can’t wait to find out!

I'll bet that 4-15-78 is a returned Betty Board and will be credited to ABCD Enterprises, the guys who arranged the return of the boards to the vault. We've had quite a slew of them in recent years and, after DaP 35 and 36, Dave is returning to the release of ABCD material either due to an agreement with the guys behind ABCD or simply because the returned boards are so numerous he can keep putting them out while holding back on the rare '68s, '69s, '70s etc.

Just an observation, not a complaint. But after two mid-80s releases, there's a lot of PRESSURE on DaP 38 -- that's gotta be a long '73 show or a couple of fall '72s, no?

Meanwhile, I return to my fantasy that the 2021 box will be 5-6 shows from fall '72 and that Wake of the Flood will get the 50th treatment "early." BUT that'll be tricky, as even two discs won't be adequate for a '73 bonus show. So, hopefully, that'd be a four-disc set. Say, pack it with the original record and outtakes and a 3-CD show.

Dreamin' is groovy, especially under the viral circumstances.........

Was expecting the typical '73-74 or '77, so I'm pleasantly surprised with '78 as first pick of 2021. That said, I'm with KEITHFAN, I don't love these long '78 Rhythm Devils. (And I'm a huge fan of Drums/Space from the Brent-era and beyond- '93-95 being my favorite.) Also, yeah, we haven't gotten a '78 pick for a while: Vols. 23, 15, 7.

Maybe we get some filler from 4/14, another returned Betty, from the night prior. Or 4/16? Had that Huntington Civic show on tape back in the day and agree it would be sweet for full release. Did he say the filler was from '78?

I try to keep things positive, but I am also kinda bummed at this pick. I find that I just don't really love April of 78, (or a lot of 78 in general,) and both Nashville and Normal are towards the bottom of my Dave's collection - Normal perhaps my least favorite show released in the series so far.

I hope a lot of heads are happy with this selection, and I am of course looking forward to it - but... c'mon Fall of 72! And, can we PLEASE get a dope Shakedown Street already?! I feel like I started ringing that bell four years ago, and still nary a one? Even after back to back 80s releases!

Apologies for the rant. Of course I subscribed. Even though I don't love April of 78, I love it more than 90% of all other music.

Peace

Just noticed this, here's the top ten "Favorite Tapes" of 1978:

7/8 (87)
12/31 (81)
7/7 (42)
1/22 (37)
10/21 (31)
10/22 (31)
11/24 (30)
4/15 (21)
4/8 (15)
9/16 (14)

It’s been speculated many times before on these boards that there is a stipulation in the agreement with ABCD that the shows have to all be released within a set amount of time.
I’m fully supportive of that. Keep them coming Dave.

My list says that I have a Miller copy of 4-15-78 on a HD, but I don’t know if I’ve ever listened to it.
Had 4-16-78 on cassette and played it many times.

I think Dave said filler from 78.
He also mentioned a Box.

I lovebthe '84 pick. Haven't received the '87 pick yet and will undoubtedly get a lot of play out of it.

78 for the first of 2021 is fine with me. Glad to see a change up.

RFK 73 would be sweet for 38. I actually liked all of the 71 Picks.

What we need for the later half of 2021 is 4/1/91 or 9/26/91 or anything from that December 90 Tempe/Denver run. Eugene 93 were great. Deer Creek 92 and 93. I could go on...

Glad to see the variety in this series finally so my disappointments are almost nonexistent now.

I am not sure I see the point of specifying the release density of the ABCD returned reels over time. Not to be contrary, but it just doesn't make sense. It's in Dead Merch/Rhino's interest to control when things get released compared to the non-ABCD's that are in the vault. It's in the other parties interest to get paid in one lump sum and not base payment on some unknown variable (like sales at a future date, etc.). I just couldn't see this being in either parties best interest. Plus it makes the deal more complex.

Then again, all this is pure speculation. Just a different perspective, regardless of the facts I am so glad the tapes made their way home. Have a great weekend.. as you were.

"I'm Finally Going To Make A Correct Prediction: Dave's Picks 38 will be RFK 6/10/73."

Seems like this show is overdue and after two '80s shows and a spring '78, ya gotta figure Dave's gonna throw us something truly vintage.

I read that the PTB had indeed mixed a small box of GD and ABB from the (2) RFK shows, plus Watkins Glen -- just selections of the hottest stuff. That project got shelved, but I never learned why.

And you may recall that I attended 6-9-73 in fine fashion and had to walk away from 6-10-73 because a) we were 15 years old and shouldn't have been loose on the town hundreds of miles from home with blotter and opium, b) we had zero money, food or water, c) we were supposed to be in school the next day, and, of course d) we were idiots.

I'll never that one down. So, um, DAVE??? Can you help us out???

Edit: JimInMD, my "thinking" is that ABCD simply got their cash costs covered in one fell swoop, and that they don't get royalties. Dave doesn't have to commit to ABCD releases. It's just that he has ~100 shows from the returned ABCD tapes to play with and they're primarily from 1971 to 1978, thus providing Dave with a shit ton to leaven the more esoteric/rare shows as he goes forward on his mad plan to keep this going until I need a walker. That was my thought... but we're too far along in this weird year for me to be confident that I'm making any sense.

Is in a Box containing 6-9,10 and 7-27,28 ABB and GD shows.
Not a limited release, online and in store sales.
ABB fans will buy it whether they like GD or not, which will drive more sales and all parties will make money.
And we come out the winners.

Plus, that means that DaP 38 with bonus can be a Pigpen release.

4-12....Cameron Indoor Stadium~Duke University?
I'd be plenty torn between the joy of a Normanized Duke, and the horror of it being a chop job.

Stay safe out there folks...

At this point.. this might just be the holy grail of what's left. I can't see it becoming a Dave's Picks either, but I like the way you think, KF.

12/18/73 might be a better tent pole for a DaP subscription year. I bet there is at least one show per release year of this quality, give or take no more and no less. It would be interesting to look at what's remaining this way.. Call shows of this caliber A+ shows and estimate 15 more years or so.. I would put the 77 Swing, 1/2/70, 1/22/78, Richmond '77, Winterland 74, etc. in this category. Toss in an A or an A- each year and spread in the best of what's left and that's probably what the next decade and a half are going to look like.

By the time we receive the last Dave's Picks I expect to be receiving my last morphine drip in hospice care.

Right there with you, JRF.. avoid the chop job. I think there is black and white video of the Duke 78 show, and it's quite good. The more I think about it the more Spring 78 makes sense for the first pick next season.
