Joined:"Stop Booing Us Then!"I can't remember the where the clip I saw that was at or on, but Bob and The Band are in a taxi cab somewhere in the U.K. after a show and Dylan is hollering out the window in response to someone's inaudible yet supposed positive comments.
I wonder how much influence all that specific negativity had upon his songwriting then? Top that off with being a bit spegeetered on them "diet pills" I sort of understand why he could become a cynical assholio!
Personally I dig the Rolling Thunder Review era and the "Street Legal" album. Though the final tour with The Band in 1974 was a pinnacle of music. Dylan is the one musician with the most 'eras' and longevity through metamorphosis it would seem, Even more than The Dead.
Neil Young also had similar life tribulations and musical themes to his long professional career journey. Though I think Neil was honestly a true 'hippie dream' believer {till he wasn't} unlike Dylan who may have really never been. - daverock
Joined:Dylan on filmTwo other good dvd's - I haven't got the blu ray discs of these or Don't Look Back, are "The Other Side of the Mirror", which features great performances from the Newport Folk Festivals of 1963,1964 and 1965 and Martin Scorsese's " No Direction Home" which takes us up to May 1966.
We can't really know about another's drug use unless they tell us about it themselves. But if pushed, I would say his work in the 60's seems more driven by amphetamines than any other drug.

Joined:I’m not a Dylan historianBut maybe the earlier comments that he was taking speed is what influenced his song writing.
If he was taking acid instead, his writing may have been more like the hippies at that time.I had previously considered getting the Dylan Box but then decided against it due to the lack of variety in the set lists.
I do have the Don’t Look Back Blu-ray, which is pretty good. - daverock
Joined:A Complete UnknownI saw this film earlier today. Really enjoyed it, too. When I got back home I dipped into the 1966 box set of live recordings, with Copenhagen and then Dublin from 1st and 5th respectively. Great stuff - although you do basically get the same set repeated over and over again. The first 3 songs of the electric set have always seemed a bit of an odd choice to me, considering all the other great songs he had at his disposal. But it's a great box to own - one to take all year to get through, though.
RYXS - it's not just his music that seems at odds with the psychedelic dream - from 1965 his attitude to his audience and peers seems quite hostile too. In some ways, his behaviour seems a bit more in line with the punks of the following decade than with hippies of the 60's.
Curiously, in some ways Pete Seeger comes across as a more sympathetic character than Dylan, with his life long commitment to civil rights and support of left wing causes and community based projects.

Joined:End of a Hippie Dream?Daverock seems to be right on about that lyrical subject matter. I may be a youngster and all this was before my time but analytically speaking I can hear exactly that point that was made! The early folksy stuff of Dylan was way more peaceful fun time 'hippie' than Hwy61 and it's gritty element of hard time living. What a trip!
The songs "Ballad of a Thin Man" and "Tom Thumb Blues" really set the true tone of the motif from the book-ended "Rollin' Stone" to "Desolation Row" and all of the last gasps of any good time hippie dream desperation along the way. Weirdly that album was in 1965~'66. The Dead and the happy San Francisco scene was just swinging into full bloom. I guess Dylan had foreshadowed something that wouldn't be realized out west till a few years later at the festival in Altamont. What happened Bob? Was it the New York City living? - daverock
Joined:Words are birdsThe most psychedelic album Bob Dylan cut, to my ears, is Bringing It All Back Home. Lyrically, not musically. Mr Tambourine sounds like a celebration of tripping to me. There is also a sense of fun and wonder on that album that seemed to disappear on the albums that followed. Not that I don't think Highawy 61 and Blonde On Blonde aren't great - amazing records - but they had a hardness about them that didn't exist before. And Positively 4th Street must be one of the harshest songs ever written. Welcome to the summer of love!
With Rainy Day Women, I'm sure he was aware of both connotations of the word stoned. The fact that he never stooped to explanation encourages different interpretations. Which is surely for the best.

I saw Garcia and Hunter play there one night and Hunter said ,I remember when this place was a grocery store, we used to shop lift here. I saw Muddy Waters play there, Big Mama Thorton and Charlie Musslewhite one night. I saw Garcia play a fantastic acoustic show there one night I believe it was Jan. of 86 , hopefully it will be released one day.

Joined:Keystone(s)!Man, just put the Live at Keystone 2 LP(purple swirl vinyl) on the turntable. Had not heard it in years, the playing is great, Jerry's tone is so good, and his voice so clear! Forgot David Grisman was on it too. Listening to it brings so many memories.
Spent many hours at both Keystones, small clubs where you could get really close to the band, and I don't recall these shows selling out(tickets at the door only) At the Berkeley location, Jerry and the band had to make their way through the crowd to get to the stage; cool room upstairs with a foosball game, and couches. These days are long gone; I always get nostalgic listening to Like a Road!
Pretty sure BTK went to a few of these :-)

Nitecat…
You bastard lol…JK ; )
Like us obsessive DH nuts don’t overthink enough already lol
Actually, good to see ya and thanks for the info, which is really just a giant tease of course lol
AND!
Getting ready next week to check out the end of 1979 and know you recorded the New Years run, but can’t recall what name their under?
Think those are the only shows you archived that I haven’t heard yet, so would love to check em out!
Tanks!
Speculation
It's GOTTA be some stuff from the 60s

60th
I’m sure I’m not the only one to consider a “60 trips” box featuring ? something from all 60 years? 96&97 you have Furthur Tours: Mystery Box, Rat Dog, Bruce, etc, 98 or so The Other Ones, then Phil gets going end of 99, Bobby throughout…, The Dead in 03, 04, and 09, Futhur around 09, or 10 I think, Fare Thee Well 2015, and D&C since, with Billy and the Kids and what not sporadically, and Mickeys varying trips, and of course Bob throughout in 1 form or another…not sure how I’d feel about that, I’d rather have 60 dead shows lol, but it seems like the thing they’d do.
I still like Modular approach idea, so of course there’s no way in hell lol
Edit: deep breaths PF…think of Kevin Bacon in the final scene of Animal House lol
1st show
Also got a shipping notice.
Oro, 60 Trips
I don’t need or want anything after 95.
But 30 x 2 = 60, 2 shows per year would be spectacular.
Of course, that would also double the price.
Nitecat
That is quite the tease Nitecat. So, what does it mean.......
And how much will it cost us?
Do we need to put away $1000?. 30 Trips was what $900?
I couldn't swing the 30 Trips Box in 2015, but I did end up buying probably 25 of the shows for way more than that original price through out the years. Won't make that mistake again.
60th Anniversary
I'm more inclined to agree with Billy, as usual, so I would like the 60th to focus on the 60's. And 1970. The essential years would be 1968-1970 for me, but a bigger box would allow for 1966 and 1967 to be included too.
To me, the Grateful Dead has to include Jerry, so I wouldn't buy anything from this collective that didn't include him. I've seen individual members of The Dead live in years since then - on separate occasions and with different bands, Phil, Bob and Tom Constanten. But I wouldn't buy any more releases from line ups like those. I no longer listen to the few I have.
60th Anniversary
I take what they offer. Hopefully a big heavy wooden box :-) A box so heavy it will need it's own shelf. (I'm designing it as I type)
It will be a glorious box filled with every show "I" ever wanted. All the Brent shows with tinny keyboard sound (the one everyone loves). Every show with someone yelling "Saint Stephen". I'd like the show with the guy (no not poleguy), the guy who danced up and down the stairs during Not Fade Away yelling "Not Fuckin' Jerry".
It will be a GREAT box, loved by all!
Enjoy
Per usual
Once again…ole Dennis is on it ! ; )
Edit: I still say mods the way to go…
Modules, X amount of shows per mod, price decreases per mod the more mods you purchase. That way Daverock, BTK get what would make them happy. Those who want it all will be happy, and also those (probably most) can do something in between which will make them happy…
I know, ain’t gonna happen : (
Next Year
I think I’ll wait to see what they offer. Then I’ll decide if I want it.
Budget is an issue for me
But...of course I'll just wait and see
Nothing left to do…
…but smile, smile, smile : )
Happy forever
Oro - I will be happy whatever is released - which doesn't mean I will necessarily buy it. Reminds me of a form I had to fill in for the hospital recently asking what I couldn't do as a result of health problems. The results suggested my quality of life had deteriorated. Which I thought was a false assumption to come to. Minor problems only. My quality of life isn't dependent on physical ability at all. I might have been naffed off to be like this at 27 - but at 67? - heck - I'm glad to be still alive!
Back to Dave Spicks 43 and two shows, one from November and one December 1969. Two Dark Stars and a mini acoustic set. Sweet.
I was in deadvikes position....
....regarding 30 Trips when the E72 steamer trunk came out. I also have probably spent more trying to purchase them separately after the fact. I have about 2/3 of them. How much was that steamer trunk again?
'72 Steamer Trunk
All of $450 based on wiki and not my memory or cc statement. 7200. Sold out in 4 days. My reaction to the announcement was NFW and I ordered immediately (thank goodness).
$450....
....FML lol. Things were tight in 2011.
$450
back then it was straight on the CC and figure it out later.
30 Trips.
ChatGPT sez: The original price of the 30 Trips Around the Sun boxed set by the Grateful Dead was $700. This limited edition set, released in 2015, includes 80 CDs featuring 30 previously unreleased concerts, one from each year of the band's career from 1966 to 1995.
Personally I have no idea what it cost anymore. I know it was a buttload of moolah. My brain automatically blocks traumatic memories.
$450
That was and is a bargain. Missed out on that one as well at the time in 2011. Bought a used one a couple years ago for $1200. It is a spectacular!
Always better to buy directly from this site if you can swing it.
E72 Trunk
was Jan 2011. Crazy response from the deadhead masses. Looks like a big part of the green light to Dave's Picks which debuted 2012.
E72, FW69, 30 Trips
I had just bought a house and didn’t want to spend the $450.
Then it sold out and I realized my error.
Then it came out as a music only edition (no schwag or steamer trunk) and I grabbed one.
I missed out on FW69 Box too.
But now have it on vinyl.
I’ll gladly buy a 30 Trips Part 2.
30 Trips Around & Around The Sun
Box Sets
and Big Box Sets. All I can say is don't f^ck up when the next one comes around.
edit - this is a cautionary tale
The Biggest Boxes
At the time, it felt like I was the only one who couldn't afford E72, kids were little, wife stayed home. It took a couple of years, but eventually bought all of the shows a la carte, would like to have the trunk though. Funny too, I originally couldn't resist, but the GD POS system crashed for like 2 days, and made it nearly impossible to order, and in that amount of time I came to my senses and decided to wait
Had to pass on 30 Trips too for same reasons. Now said kids are in college, so, don't see a 60 show box in my near future either, but I like the idea of other lineups, tons of grate post Jerry music out there
Bring on the Box
I didn't get the Europe for all the usual reasons. $450 seemed like so much money at the time. And then I probably spent roughly the same amount of money, if not more, collecting those shows one by one.
Same for the Fillmore '69. Bought 'em all on vinyl, eventually, Paid more than what the original box cost.
I call this method of acquisition "paying the stupid tax." I pay that tax surprisingly often. Maybe not so surprisingly.
So I tend to just grab the boxes now.
I hope they use the 60th anniversary as a chance to put out a box of 60 year old stuff, or at least clean the vaults of whatever pre-'69 they have. I'm actually not much interested in a collection from the past 30 years. Plenty of good music, sure. But it ain't the Grateful Dead,
Kennedy Center Honors
Tonight on CBS. Bob, Mickey, Billy all dressed up. Commercial showed TTB playing? Was wondering who would they have playing their tunes. James Taylor there too. Wonder if he would be doing a Dead tune. Hmm... which one would I want JT covering? Ripple? Monkey & the Engineer, lol? Will someone do Box of Rain to honor Phil? Oh, and Bonnie Raitt will be honored too!
Cheers
Money
Always the deciding factor. I remember when my wife and I could either collect the pennies for the toll road to work or take the longer free road. Money comes and goes. I must have been at the right point when I bought the E72 box. I know at the time didn't mention money to my wife.
Last word on spending money (ha). My brother in law used to say, "put it to the coke test,,,,, would you spend that much on coke?"
Now there was some money pissed away!
"What's become of the baby.....
this cold December morning". The Dead never played it live, they used it as a backing track on 4/26/69 during their encore. Some really far out lyrics.
Standing ovation for crowtoldme
Anything after 95 just ain't GD
I certainly hope a 60th box includes only GD.
Any "remains of the Dead" lineups are nice and all, but I dont want to buy any of it.
Gimme gimme gimme GD
Would I spend that much on coke....
.....hmm. That seems like a loaded question.
Checkers Sighted!
Got him on trail cam on our porch last night. We'll get him tonight hopefully. Two weeks out in the cold. Will be a good Christmas.
Cheers and thanks to all
Yay! Checkers Sighting!
Super cool that he was on the trail cam! I loved that you were rolling with that (I sorta want a trail cam.)
And - I love What's Become of the Baby - reading the lyrics for the first time - in Box of Rain I'm guessing - was something of a >mind-blown< moment.
Out of the loop....
....is Checkers your cat?
Checkers!

Oro doin' the Tom Jones, lol.
My wife and her best friend when they were in high school in Charleston, WV went to the parking lot of the Tom Jones concert and left flyers on the cars that said "Tom Jones STUFFS!" Gotta love a woman who thinks like that.
What's Become of the Baby
Huge difference between the version on the original mix and that on the remixed version of Aoxomoxoa. For about 20 years, the only one I had heard was the remixed version, so it was quite a revelation to eventually hear the earlier version - which is much better. To my ears, anyway.
What's Become of the Baby, original mix
Yeah, there is a world of difference in the remixed version and the original mix. The whole album is much better with the original mix,. The same with Anthem of the Sun,, much better with the original mix.
Jim has a cat. Bagheera....
.....he also went for a two week adventure. We were all worried. But cats will cat.
We have dogs here.
Kennedy Center Honors
That performance brought tears to my eyes. Extremely well done. Hope I'm not the only one that watched it?
Truly exceptional presentation.
Ha.. Bagira. She escaped the other night and I could not retrive her before I had to retire. It was like 12 degrees and she's like a hundred years old in cat years, and skinny as fluck. I had given her off for dead, but got up at 6 expecting the worst, opened the door and in she runs, ate some food and slept for two days straight.
China Cat, go figure.
Did not see Kennedy honors
In an undisclosed location at the moment with no telly

with a nice group end of the night version NFA
The Kennedy Center Thing
I thought the Kennedy Center thing was pretty good. Lots of good words from lots of people.
And some good songs, although they chopped 'em short. Like with Ripple they only did one of the "Ripple in still water" parts, and then cut the "la da da da" ending thing in half. Which is unfortunate, because that only saves, what, 10 seconds? And one thing that's true about Dead music: you gotta let it breathe a little. So I wish they didn't do that.
Surprise of the evening was to see Chloe Sevigny up there talking about the Wall of Sound and her years as a Deadhead. For some reason it can still surprise me when somebody who was into punk turns out to also love the Dead. Even though I was into punk, but also loved the Dead. For the record, unlike Chloe, I never qualified as a punk fashion icon though.
Anyway, fun to see the guys honored that way. Nice that they also kind of honored the 'heads by having a smoke-filled VW van on one side of the stage, complete with a couple tie dyed youngsters watching and swaying. And yeah, I got a little misty when they had Jerry onscreen singing Ripple.
I'm sure it's all on Yew Toob by now if you want to check it.
KC Honors event
Well worth checking out the video, growing up in the DC area in the 50s and 60s, MLK riot, Nixon, JFK, the Viet Nam War demonstrations, that edifice next to Watergate became an outrageously amazing place for top flight performance of many kinds...fortunate to get there a bit. Great music last night (actually it was on Dec 8th, really hard to get tickets with all the politicos lined up). Keb Mo and Susan Tedeschi doing Robert Johnson's Walkin' Blues? Just fabulous. Derek, Don Was, so great to see Grahame Lesh on stage too. Wonderful to see Trixie with the boys.
Remixing the 60's to fit in with the 70's
Depsychedelicisation is the word that come to mind.
Fortunately for you, Proudfoot

ITS A FESTIVUS FOR THE REST OF US!
Soon, it will be time for the airing of grievances…oh, wait, we already did that this year ; )
Kennedy Center Honors/CBS Interview
Caught the clips this morning. Missed all the commercials, lol. The CBS 35 minute interview with the three remaining members done by Anthony Mason was good too. One of the comments on ytube was, "I can't believe Bill is the one I like the most now" which made me laugh. And that late 70s(?) clip of Letterman "teaching" Garcia to play guitar was short but priceless.
Cheers
KC Honors
Not too proud to admit, I shed some tears. Thought about my buddy Maz who got me on the bus in the early 80’s Lost him 2 years ago but that man got me on the bus what more could you do for someone? God Bless the Grateful Dead and God bless brother Maz!
