Charm city was nothin' but! Clocking in at a full four hours, 33 songs, and some of the most purposeful and inspired playing the Grateful Dead ever did do, is DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 54, the complete show from Baltimore Civic Center, Baltimore, MD, 3/26/73. A so-called underdog favorite of both Dave and Dick, 3/26/73 is packed with highs from the 17-song (!) first set, to classic covers ("Promised Land," "Big River," "Me And Bobby McGee"), early renditions of songs that would later be cemented on WAKE OF THE FLOOD ("Eyes Of The World," "Here Comes Sunshine"), the prelude to what would officially become "Weather Report Suite," and by golly, that's Wolfman Jack introducing, you guessed it, "Ramble On Rose." Limited to 25,000 numbered copies, DAVE'S PICKS VOL. 54: BALTIMORE CIVIC CENTER, BALTIMORE, MD (3/26/73) was recorded by Kidd Candelario and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering.

Finally stepping into this era and really looking forward to it. Lots of gems from the Europe, December and New Years runs in 1990.

Maybe MaryE can create a thread for this release? Might as well keep up with the tradition of a new thread with each pick.

I was traveling yesterday with the family and didn't see the announcement until last night. Strange short seaside chat from Dave. I am starting to see the theme, shows Dave has attended.Anyway, good to see the first pick post Brent. I would have thought he would start with a 91 show, but I am wrong again.
Love the variety.

Yes, and where is the new thread.

I'm kind of curious about the A's hat. Maybe that's either Dave or one of the friends Dave went to the show with? Because the A's are (how shall I put this?) kind of controversial in the Bay Area these days. Ever since they announced plans to leave Oakland for Las Vegas.

Looking forwards to this one regardless. I haven't listened much to the Vince/Bruce stuff, so this should be interesting.

Kinda sorta thought that these two would be from years not in the box?

Dave's 55??? Sounds like it's Daves's B'day and he's 55??

Deadvikes, I was wondering the same thing and if it was a trend starting with the Hartford 87 shows-- Dave seems to have a soft spot for shows he attended for releases from 1987-95. Makes me believe he wasn't at Alpine 89 as those shows, as I noted on the Box Set page, are long overdue for release. Now I am starting to sound like a conspiracy theorist! Of course, the man is free to release any good shows he wants.

While I have nothing against a Vince/Bruce era release, this show's setlist isn't enticing me-- gonna be another pass for me. If it was the 10/31 Wembley show, though, I would probably nab it. I do very much like the artwork on this though (A's hat excepted)-- the historian in me loves this take of Deadheads storming the Bastille.

And yes, like Fourwinds suggested, I think that figure is likely intended to be DL.

The esteemed Daverock suggested that - having been at Wembley - the first night was his favorite of the three. However, he did give the disclaimer that it could have been due to the anticipation factor stemming from the 9 year gap in seeing the Boys ('81 to '90). Between his view and Dave's choice of (some of) it over a selection of the following night, I'm retaining my optimism that this will be a very rewarding release in total.

In any event, as one's mileage can always vary, it definitely nails the 'uniqueness' factor (among DaPs) > lineup and venue-wise ... Thanks, Dave!

Ya know, I've made a few predictions here & there but this year I've been guessing right on the money or pretty darn close to the year of the show released. I have my stats scribbled & some suspicions for certain years overlooked or underrepresented, like 1982 or 1988. I would've said any Vince & Bruce era but that's now #55, (Hooray!) but anyways...

Icecreamkid makes a good point, there's been quite a bit of Brent released lately. Most certainly from this year's Big Box but also including two of last years picks and one of those was a double album.
Even though I still feel an '82 or earlier Brent show may come up, or possibly a later '80s, Dave may dive back into those Banana Boxes in that big 'walk-in cooler' style vault and start baking some grease goodies!
I know folks been clamoring for 1970.

So Maybe #56 is Grease era & #57 is that 1982 Double disc Frost show?
Next year could see a 1974, maybe as the #58 with bonus disc!

It just occurred to me not only is this the first entry into the Dave's series of the Vince & Bruce era. It also is the first overseas Dave's Picks Dead show. Maybe if we don't get a summer tour '74 show next year a September Euro tour selection will make the cut?

Thanks for the pointing-out. I missed it.

When I saw it, I thought of two movie quotes...

From Red River: "There's three times in a man's life when he has a right to yell at the moon: when he marries, when his children come, and when he finishes a job he had to be crazy to start. "

From Kingsman - "A gentleman's name should appear in the newspaper only three times: When he's born, when he marries, and when he dies. And we are, first and foremost, gentlemen."

OK, I quess my name SHOULD have been in the paper with that murder charge!

MaryE: Any chance you are around and can start up a new #55 comments thread?

Waiting, oh waiting for that BfA notice and (presumably) the 6.17.75 Bob Fried Memorial Boogie add on ...

As for Grease versus Frost, my personal wish is for DL to 'do the double' for us for #56 and get those two '82 gems out. Between the BfA stuff and Oct of '82, we all need more beautiful remastered versions of Crazy Fingers in our lives right now (at least I d*mn sure do!)

THEN hit something, say from '70 if possible, for the first release of next year #57.

Bastille Day July 14th, 1789. We can only assume those skeletons using mic stands as weapons are storming the vault.

Yes, I have been calling for this for many years. You would not believe the number of permits it takes to build a tunnel in Burbank, under the vault so we can free the reels.. I mean, geeze.., red tape, inspectors, engineers.., it never stops. Sometimes you need a revolution. Who's with me?

In case anyone hasn't heard there are vicious wildfires going on at the Grand Canyon North Rim...I live on the South Rim and am treated (if that's the word) to huge daily plumes of smoke by day and tongues of flame licking the horizon at night...Last night one of them, The Dragon Bravo Fire, burned down the the rim village, the historic Grand Canyon Lodge, cabins & visitor center are no more...where we are the Canyon is 12 miles across so we here on the South Rim are OK...for now...

I saw the Lodge was lost. Such a piece of history.
My little Black Canyon of the Gunnison looks completely blackened but they saved the visitors center. Fires everywhere this year. Lighting doesn't choose a target I guess.
I'm with ya buddy.
Have your go bag ready and be safe.

A freaking disaster. A lightning strike on July 4 and they decided to treat it as a controlled burn and a week later Dragon Bravo blows up and out of control. It certainly doesn't seem to be the proper weather conditions for a controlled burn so why would someone think it was a good idea to manage a lightning strike fire as a "controlled burn," especially when failure to control it leads to torching the near entirety of North Rim facilities. I saw the news yesterday afternoon and texted a couple of brothers that I've done Rim-to-Rim hikes with (South to North). We've been meaning to do another one and it could have easily been this fall. Wasn't going to post anything here but saw recent comments in thread. Had also heard about the Black Canyon fire - glad the visitor center got saved. Wildfire danger is definitely on my radar (along with flash floods). I think the smoke in the air this morning is back drafting from the Deer Creek Fire on the UT - CO line west of Paradox. Be safe folks. Back to the music over on the listening thread.

my wife & I reviewed our 2014 family vaca photo's
on Sunday afternoon after we heard the news
cabin #17
breakfast in the dining room in the Lodge

as my oldest son said at the time
as we all walked up to the northern rim
for the very 1st time
"NOW that's a CANYON" with that huge 15 year old grin

please rebuild it
so millions can visit

Looks like Dave's #47 (St.Louis`79) sold out again, I thoroughly enjoyed that Pick personally. That same summer 2023 soon after the (DaP#47) original release I was able to BUY, not bid on Dave's #31 (Chicago`79) off fleabay for like the same price it would've been a la carte in 2019! Between those two shows and the bonus material from both (12/4/79~Chicago) I have spent many hours listening & making playlists. A perfect example of complimentary Dave's Picks.
My guess is the left over 'found copies' of Dave's #45 (PdXs`77) will sell out 'again' next.
Can't wait for the new Pick, and the new era it represents!

I totally agree with the IcecreamKid, there should be a Dave's #55 page up. There are too many good things to be stated about this latest Dave's Picks release!
First of many nuances, as it's the debut of the Vince era, & also a foreign shore show. Dave must've had this one in his back pocket so to say, grate liner notes too from himself at that. Why so long to release this one I can only wonder, well, better late than never!

Driving through the Shiprock area a couple of times over last three weeks and the whole 4 Corners was awash in smoke. Hadn't checked on Dragon Bravo for awhile until I saw your post Nappy. Currently near 95,000 acres burned and 9% containment. My god, what a disaster . . . .

If this is 'soup' for a show as some has stated, well then this is Mendy's straight outta some Seinfeld episode! I relish the flavors I can discern, like on the "Touch of Grey" opener with Bobby's twangy guitar strum at the right times. Phil's tasty licks throughout as well the keyboard riffs from Vince & Bruce.

Also to go with that tasty soup are 'rolls' from Mick & Bill aplenty, a bottomless basket of them drum rolls!

Damn fine release from Dave, as usual but this is a nice debut of the era. Love the personal liner notes story too!

I went lickety splitly out to my old 55. - Tom Waits
Finally getting a chance to hear DaP 55.
I am seeing mostly positive reviews.
A few saying Oro's old saw.
Right street, wrong house, lol.
Starts out well enough with a lively Touch of Grey.
1st impression is the sound is a bit muddy but well balanced.
Both keyboards are well forward.
Cheers
More to come....
Dave saves the day being the only one who can speak French and convince the gendarmes that the reserved area is for the tapers. Oui! But who was watching his tape deck while he was walking around the venue? I'm guessing the photo of the cassettes are his personal originals.
Really nice setlist and well played 1st set! Stander On The Mountain could have been a keeper. I could see that going all kinds of improvisational places. Set 2 after lunch...
Well I'm up to Drums and loved almost all of the pre-drums, lol. Sorry, but I felt like I was the victim in that 2nd set opener. Not my cup-o-tea....
Finishes off nicely with, again, a great setlist and solid performances. I love Knockin' on Heaven's Door but I can't help but laugh when I think of the 1st time I heard it BITD in the movie it was written for, Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid where Dylan plays the character "Alias" and I think some of his lines were reading the labels of the canned goods on the shelf to keep him busy while someone has a gun on them all in the room. "Beans,.... green beans,... potatoes,... beans..." etc. Dylan was nominated for a Grammy for that soundtrack. (but not an Oscar, lol.)
