Charm city was nothin' but! Clocking in at a full four hours, 33 songs, and some of the most purposeful and inspired playing the Grateful Dead ever did do, is DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 54, the complete show from Baltimore Civic Center, Baltimore, MD, 3/26/73. A so-called underdog favorite of both Dave and Dick, 3/26/73 is packed with highs from the 17-song (!) first set, to classic covers ("Promised Land," "Big River," "Me And Bobby McGee"), early renditions of songs that would later be cemented on WAKE OF THE FLOOD ("Eyes Of The World," "Here Comes Sunshine"), the prelude to what would officially become "Weather Report Suite," and by golly, that's Wolfman Jack introducing, you guessed it, "Ramble On Rose." Limited to 25,000 numbered copies, DAVE'S PICKS VOL. 54: BALTIMORE CIVIC CENTER, BALTIMORE, MD (3/26/73) was recorded by Kidd Candelario and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering.

My mother was the person that took my mail orders to the post office for my friend and I from the early eighties thru the spring 90 tour. She was an indispensable part of the team. Happy Mother’s Day mom “you know my love with Not Fadeaway” God Bless Mom God Bless the Grateful Dead!

P.F. hard to say about those 1986 shows. 12/15/86, the first show Garcia came back , was a knockout! To hear Garcia siing Touch . of Grey and "I will survive", was about as good as it gets. Also , to hear the crowd response when he sang " hand me my old guitar" was incredibly emotional. I saw a fantastic Garcia & Kahn acoustic show at Keystones Palo Alto in Jan 1986, it was fantastic.

Yes, very cool. The true face - and sound - of Britain. 26th of this month I'll be off to see Hawkwind, who Lemmy helped transform from a honk and tweet collective to one of the greatest rock bands in the galaxy.

My mum once drove off to meet some bikers to pick up a Black Sabbath ticket .I had bought it off one of them mail through an advert in a music paper. I don't think the word risk was invented until about 1985.

Number 54 sets a hole new standard for "live sound" - Norman outdid himself on this one. A top 5 Daves, for sure. (and Kidd Candelario did great tapes..).

That Weather Report Prelude from this release fits right in with the change of the season. After several listens, the prelude into the jam might just be my favorite part. (edit, the Prelude into the Jam into Wharf Rat into Bobby McGee into Eyes into Morning Dew might just be my favorite part). Oh hell, add in the Truckin' because, well, you have to, in fact it is necessary.

Interesting tidbit I read recently.. Bob dropped the prelude section because the words were too sappy or something like that. It saddened me a bit because I really like hearing the entire suite, especially that soulful slide guitar piece from Jerry that really sets the tone for what follows. I never really thought about the words being a sappy love song, more of a prelude to Let It Grow. I guess I see his point, still.. dammit Bobby, play the damned thing a few more times, if even if just for me. And for gods sake, if you pull this out a few times during a tour but omit it on the show I happen to attend, you will be reincarnated as a gypsum moth.

..and Spring means NHL playoffs and finals, which is fine with me. I look at hockey like I look at Lacrosse. Both very cool, under-rated sports and as different as they are, they are more similar than most would admit. Also, somehow capitalism and money has not stripped and robbed all the fun out of either sport (yet?). Money, as much as we seem to love it, just f*cks everything up and leaves a trail of destruction in it's path. Yet, without it we freeze or roast and then starve, god forbid ever getting a spouse / having kids (which is truly great). Just my opinion, I could be wrong. But seriously, the happiest I was in my life was at the very poorest moment. Makes no sense until you think about it.

As you were.

Edit2: Shoutout to Lacrosse which will make it's (almost) Olympic debut in Los Angeles in 2018. It was also in the 1932 Olympics as a Demonstration Sport, also in Los Angeles, but was dropped probably because the Jamacians were too busy trying to put together a bobsled team. My grandfather actually helped win the gold in '32, he played for Johns Hopkins. We still have the wooden sticks and other assorted memorabilia (except the gold which is at my red neck cousins in Ohio (for now... [insert evil laugh]).

....Yeah, I gotta loath Bob a little bit if he felt that way about his song. I know he sings a lot about 'lost my girl' pretty boy "Bobby Problems" when not doing 'Gene Autry' style cowboy songs. Don't get me wrong, he does all them fairly damn well like it or not.
As for Let it Grow on its own I don't mind it but the Weather Report Prelude just fits so fine, especially (and maybe only) with an in tune, angelic soft sung Donna. {She can cut loose in the Let it Grow part}
Another thing I dig about the Prelude is the harmonies around the 'seasons change' lyric, as well as the words themselves. Although I don't equate the song to a since left lover per se, I feel it more represents the cycle of life itself and represents a lost beloved. More then likely lost to death from some tragic reason or another and on to the grate beyond.
{My beloved cat died from old age and cat disease around the time after I received Dave's #38 and was listening pretty heavy to that song. Also it was right before DaP#39 and that tear jerker Brent tune oh so fitting to my mood at the time.}
Anyways,... Yeah I also dig the cultivation motif of the Prelude, and subsequent Let it Grow so there's that too. I do ornamental pruning of Japanese Maples and other trees as well as cultivate my own Medical Cannabis so I kind of live that song to an extent. Riding the tides of the seasons as they ebb & flow, ...... Maples & Marijuana behbay!

Dead References; The full "Weather Report Suite~Let it Grow" from PdXs 5/19~1974 or Seattle 5/21~1974!

Nodding in agreement. Sorry about your cat, but so glad you so memorably distilled the moment.

Anyway, well put, it's like I would have written if I was as good with words.

curse you bobby for dropping Prelude (and for your short shorts in the 80's). Ok I forgive you for your shorts.

... or shorts & polo.
Upon further pondering I would hypothesize that Bob did have a woman in mind when he wrote the song originally. Then just like the song theme goes, seasons change and I guess he was over it by the return of the Dead after the hiatus. Why sing about an old love when you're with a new woman & living a new life?
Anyways,... While I was poking fun at the early 1980s and Bobby's attire I had a shocking epiphany. As children of the era, {personally age 5 through 9 in 1980~'84} we kids for much of any given summer were dressed in exactly the same way as Bobby was. Short shorts, though maybe with some stripes on the side and if worn with a polo style shirt it was probably an IZOD brand, the one with the Alligator on the crest. No doubt we probably turned our collars up too cuz that's what we thought all the cool kids (and adults) did!
My gosh! The Horror,... the horror!.....

My favorite Let it Grow....

1985-12-31 - Alameda County Coliseum - Oakland, CA

This is what JiminMD said quite a while ago, the 80's were HOT. Recordings may have lacked, but they were driven in the 80's.

Anyway my two cents.

I think we all have "moments" we remember.

Sure I paid money to be at a show, but always felt privileged to be there, like you were let in on this sonic experiment that was going to be that night only,,,, and you were there.

Sidebar - I've never been one for concert video, but just got in Fare Thee Well. Last video disc is Rainbows are Real. Have to say it brought a tear to my eyes when the woman at GDTS talked about the amount of ticket request they got and she wasn't sure if anyone would still buy that way.

Man I love the sound on this release!
Phil is coming in loud and clear.
The Prelude alone in a jam sequence is cool.
Got to love the wall of sound shows.
And I'm listening while watching the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. Don't remember seeing the first two days on free TV before. Bonus!
Cheers
10th grade freak cool guy look included a polo with the collar up under a flannel shirt. Invented, here in Colorado at least, by a He's Gone friend of mine. Miss ya Dave!

first show thanks for the tip, if it were not a major, I would never watch a first day tournament but tis far better than watching the legal debates going on with scotus today. Because a local pro had qualified, I went down to Florida to cover for the local rag his efforts at the 1987 PGA Championship held in August... one of my first assignments, it was brutally hot. Troubling lately, the way the fine ancient sport has been promoted by DJT and the LIV tour.

Closest I ever got to a PGA was learning to play at the site of the 1967 PGA, Columbine C.C. in Littleton, CO. (Dad had a membership though his job, we were not rich.) Learning on a tough, long course was good experience that has stood me well.
I did get to fore-caddy at the 1978 U.S. Open at Cherry Hills thanks to a buddy who worked there. On the downhill dogleg right 10th hiding in the trees with a big flag to wave when they missed the fairway. Did manage to smoke a bowl while waiting for the start, where else but the caddy shack.

Amazing: Playing In The Band, Truckin' and the Jam.

It's getting dark now outside (and cooler), leaving the bonus for tomorrow.
It was worth the wait.

Not every Dave’s release clicks right away with me.
On first listen, a few have been real head-scratchers (number 53 being the most recent, despite my loving 76 overall — that box set is sublime).
But eventually I always go back for a second and fourth listen.
And whatever I missed before comes ringing out loud and clear.
So here I am saying “Damn! This is some mighty fine shee-ite, alright.” It’s quickly becoming a fave.

Dave's Picks 40-43 was my personal nadir for the series, but quite a few since have been lovely, including this latest, which is a birthday show for me. The most lovely aspect of all this is that individuals here likely LOVED some of the releases from DaP40-43, so we all love the same fruit, just for varying reasons.

Be kind, then rewind.

...No, not the Pearl Jam album. It's the new Dave's Picks rating trip I'm on now!
Now I don't own DaP#1 but am familiar with it, and I would totally rate DaP#41 over the inaugural #1 pick. Irony is that it was a show in contention for the very first release of the series, I'm so glad Dave saved that one. I also would pick (either show) of DaP#40 over #44, which ain't a bad show. I like DaP#39 over #52 but only very slightly. Also the two December 1979 Brent shows #31 & #47 are hard to chose between, & have similar sets. DaP#47 has a "Shakedown St." & that's a big plus but the other show #31 has the better filler from Chicago. The Alabama Getaway is better on #47 by far i.m.h.o., all to Brent's credit!
I am curious what folks feel about the February 1974 Winterland shows. I got the latter one DaP#42 by subscribing & was not hip enough or on time to pick up the earlier one from 2015 which was #13. I am partial to the song "Here Comes Sunshine" & #42 had the last version played live of that song for like 18 years, so there's that. Though it must be said that #13 has a "Dark*Star" & that's a plus.
DaP#43 had an awesome theme, cover art and TWO Dark*Stars!
Lastly, I would pick (either show) DaP#45 over #33, but I am also pro~PNw biased.
Keep on Trippen!

To be fair, this is probably a better place to be having DaP discussions versus the box thread. But one comment leads everyone down a different path!

…was the sludge pit for me, with 40 close behind. Those caused me to almost bail on the subscription altogether and take my chances a la carte.
I’m with Charles though. 33 is a gem. Always been a top tier show for me, and the Bertha is possibly my favorite (among a few favorites).
54 is something special from beginning to end,, no doubt. Love when a show keeps pulling me back to play it again.

…was definitely a surprise, especially the 4/27 show. I wasn’t familiar with either, but they’ve both gotten a lot of play since landing on the doorstep.
4/26/83 was my very first show, so 39 became an immediate favorite.
If 10/19/94 ever gets an official release then both my first and last shows will have made the cut.

A little more 68 and 69 would be nice, depending on what kind of alchemy and wizardry Mr. Norman can conjure.

I was surprised to see a few shows I really like get overlooked by some, but I agree the formula of 77 followed by 74 got a bit stale. Looks like they are attempting to mix this up a little with 76 being the new 77 and 73 the new 74, but it's really the same kick off strategy with a twist.

Still, if you take a step back and look at this series from afar... it's a pretty decent mix of shows. Something for everyone. There's more than a few highflyers that shine.

We need more shows.. what's next Dave?

Hard to know which shows people are talking about when they refer to a Daves Picks by number without saying what date it is. They are all on another floor from where I am sitting at my laptop, so to make sense of it, I have to break off and go upstairs to have look.

But number 33 seems to have been DeKalb 10/29/77 - and that is a good one in my books. I seem to remember Keith's keyboard sounding like a harpsichord at times.

It has been a great mix of shows. I often hear (see) that a good lot of folks really want some post-Brent material and I am inclined to agree to continue with the diversity of picks that Dave has provided so far. I really liked the Saint of Circumstance (6/17/91) release a few years back, as well as the download series many years back, volume 11, from Pine Knob (6/20/91). Admittedly, I haven't ventured too much into 92-95...except the infamous gate crashing Deer Creek show (7/2/95) and DP 27 (12/26/92), I'm very familiar with.

I definitely always welcome a 68 or 69 show, but I'm going to guess the next year we see is 1980 or 1981...

King Gizzard released a new song/video. Grow Wings And Fly. Highly upbeat, happy, solid bass line and gets the Mrs. VGuy seal of approval.
The song formed from a jam they evolved last year while playing live. They played a verse when I saw thém in Vegas. Thought it was a one off. Pretty cool.
Secured a ticket to see them at The Hollywood Bowl in August. I know what catches my fancy, and I'm all in. The band AND venue.
Ok. As you were.

most of my dave's picks were upstairs too, but now most of them go back down were I listen. Yes diificult by number, easier as miami jai alai fronton 74, Nassau 73, fox atlanta 80.etc I listen again some of my underated shows march 87 with "audience sound" and Deer Creek 90, especially this last one, very good, and always great to go back to the eighties. I 'm just wabdering abou the baltimore à la carte.

I have had another listen to Daves 36 - 3/26/87. I'd forgotten about the audience sound. It does actually remind me of when I saw them in 1990, more than the older shows I listen to, with the crowd cheering in the background. Even though Brent had gone by the time I saw them, the feel of this show is similar. Even down to the first set closing with Bird Song -Promised Land , which also happened on 31/10/90 at Wembley.
Overall, it's more one I would play in the background while getting ready to go out or something, rather than sit down and listen to.

My cassettes were labeled with the date of the show, not the order that I received the cassette.

A very good selection of shows has been released over the past 35 years or so.

I’m missing a couple bonus discs, but otherwise have it all.
The complete collection in ALAC format is about 500 GB.
I have it on a micro SDXC card in a portable music player that is connected to my stereo.

The shows are each in a folder named as the date of the show.
That way they are displayed in chronological order.

Aside from Hoffman, and not reddit, can anyone post sites that go through new releases and critique songs in a show.

It appears very clear that on this forum no one wants to actually talk about this monster Baltimore show.

I've had this show for years and have spent countless hours with other heads grooving in conversation and listening to this show.

Appears regularly there's hype for a show to arrive in mail, then rather quickly topic of show dropped to what Dave should release or on this date.

Not to sound harsh. Yeah, great bonus disc, but in no way even comes close to the ballpark we are playing in with Baltimore. The Dew in Baltimore by itself blows the Buffalo disc out of the water.

Can anyone talk about how Me and Bobby McGee is cool where it appears in second sets during this period and so beautifully easy it's delivered.

I could go on but what's the point really this ain't 1982 anymore.

Why don’t you review it? I don’t particularly care for reviews myself. Some people’s opinions I trust and if I haven’t heard the show and they say listen, I listen.

I decide whether I want to relisten or shelve it. And I don’t really care what others opinions are, only if I like it. By the way, I really like this recent release, 3/26/73, it’s my favorite show released in the past few years.

Point is gimme some lovin' I'm simply raising the question is before we all put it on the shelf and want another hit, why not be vulnerable and emotional, tell me with your capacity for language how is the experience moving you.

I apologize if I hit your nerve in an accusatory way that insulted your authority. I just don't see folks wanting to rave about shows so quickly after being released.

Sure a new live Marley show, not much to speak of. A 73' shows, we could camp for weeks on this baby.

I must say I dislike anytime one shows question of the established orthodoxy the person is instantly pounced upon. Not how I grew into the remainder of the 60's and active touring.

Question Authority
Think Globally, Act Locally
My Enemy Is Really My Brother
Don't Trust Anyone Over 30
Big Brother Hates Independent Thoughts

Springfield is a snoozer
Phily is the dark horse
Baltimore edges out spectacular Boston

If yer in San Diego would love to chew the fat at OB.

I will meet your challenge when I have time from Babes & Beach this week will do a song by song review of this show. Heck if folks like it I'll do it for certain releases. We could call it Dumb A** Head From the 80's that Infected Your Purple Lagoon.

I'm on my laptop or phone when I'm reading these threads. Not sure there's any other way to read them, actually.
So if someone mentions a release number, and I'm not sure what show it is (or vice versa), I usually just Google it.
Or check my Apple Music library since they're all ripped there.
Doesn't ever dawn on me to get up, go find the physical copy, reference it, then come sit back down at my device of choice.
But, hey, that's just me.
I live life differently, I suppose.

I am seeing mostly positive reviews.
A few saying Oro's old saw.
    Right street, wrong house, lol.
Starts out well enough with a lively Touch of Grey.
1st impression is the sound is a bit muddy but well balanced.
    Both keyboards are well forward.

    More to come....
Dave saves the day being the only one who can speak French and convince the gendarmes that the reserved area is for the tapers. Oui! But who was watching his tape deck while he was walking around the venue? I'm guessing the photo of the cassettes are his personal originals.
Really nice setlist and well played 1st set! Stander On The Mountain could have been a keeper. I could see that going all kinds of improvisational places. Set 2 after lunch...
Well I'm up to Drums and loved almost all of the pre-drums, lol. Sorry, but I felt like I was the victim in that 2nd set opener. Not my cup-o-tea....
Finishes off nicely with, again, a great setlist and solid performances. I love Knockin' on Heaven's Door but I can't help but laugh when I think of the 1st time I heard it BITD in the movie it was written for, Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid where Dylan plays the character "Alias" and I think some of his lines were reading the labels of the canned goods on the shelf to keep him busy while someone has a gun on them all in the room. "Beans,.... green beans,... potatoes,... beans..." etc. Dylan was nominated for a Grammy for that soundtrack. (but not an Oscar, lol.)

If this is 'soup' for a show as some has stated, well then this is Mendy's straight outta some Seinfeld episode! I relish the flavors I can discern, like on the "Touch of Grey" opener with Bobby's twangy guitar strum at the right times. Phil's tasty licks throughout as well the keyboard riffs from Vince & Bruce.

Also to go with that tasty soup are 'rolls' from Mick & Bill aplenty, a bottomless basket of them drum rolls!

Damn fine release from Dave, as usual but this is a nice debut of the era. Love the personal liner notes story too!

Looks like Dave's #47 (St.Louis`79) sold out again, I thoroughly enjoyed that Pick personally. That same summer 2023 soon after the (DaP#47) original release I was able to BUY, not bid on Dave's #31 (Chicago`79) off fleabay for like the same price it would've been a la carte in 2019! Between those two shows and the bonus material from both (12/4/79~Chicago) I have spent many hours listening & making playlists. A perfect example of complimentary Dave's Picks.
My guess is the left over 'found copies' of Dave's #45 (PdXs`77) will sell out 'again' next.
Can't wait for the new Pick, and the new era it represents!
