Joined:Mixing and FixingFirst and foremost this is an excellent release!!! Grate 1978, that 'jam' from 2/1 sets the proper tone, an infant Rhythm Devil so to speak.
After reconfiguring the 2/1 show (encore) song(s) to the actual set list order as they should be, I came to a different dilemma for the 1/31 extras. Do I position "Let It Grow" the 1st set ender of the 1/31 show as it naturally would fit before the whole second set of disc 3?
Naw! I get weird with it and put it between the 2nd set Jerry songs where a different Bobby tune ("Sampson & Delilah") would be. Kinda makes for an odd very short middle set, as they sign off for a 'short break' after only 3 songs.
If the encore "Around & Around" didn't have the 'good night' sign off, I might have got real trippy and completely blended all the material into 4 distinct artificial but logical 'sets' and closely as originally ordered. Starting with the natural 2/1 first set, then a new weird 2/1 & 1/31 blended mix set. That as...(( 2/1 Samson & Delilah, Must've been the Roses, A & A , to 1/31 Scarlett>>Fire, Let it Grow)) Finishing with the left over 2nd sets of both shows starting with 2/1 "Estimated to Sugar Mag" then 1/31 "Terrapin to Good Lovin" ..... Yeah I may be a bit lost in the weeds now on multiple fronts, genres, & entundres!.......
Anyways,... I do appreciate it all! Thanks Dave. - strat-wolf-bean

When I come back to this one though, I will probably just hit Jack Straw (Hot), FoD and/or RoR - depending on mood - Cassidy (also Hot) and the Let it Grow that was included from the night before.
.
As others have mentioned, the Sugaree is quite good, but gets a little out of 'sync' in places. It sounded to me as though Jerry tries to fit a few too many notes in a couple/few times vs. the tempo the rest are going along at. It is very '78 and interesting (to me, at least) in that it shows how fine the 'margins' were - and what an Incredibly Melded 'group mind' they had going for a decade > from the primal years up to, IMO, about this point in time.
.
Looking forward to discs 2 & 3 ...

Thanks, Marye

Yay for the 57 board Marye! Listening now, sounds grate. The kid who delivered it, neither a UPS or USPS vehicle literally threw it 10 feet onto my porch, jackass. Caught it on the Ring while at work, it was packed tight though and now sounds excellent in the CD player. Good luck to those still to receive
Arrived early this morning
My copy arrived here in central Oregon early this morning. Ripped the discs, separated the two shows and rearranged the running order to be consistent with how it should be. Scanned the cover art. Listening to it now.
#542 arrived at 10 30pm
I was at work at the dispatch center, my shift takes me until 2am each night, and when I checked at like 8 the package still hadn't delivered. Got home around 0230 and there it was waiting for me - what are these "mail innovations" they speak of, one wonders?
Currently spinning disc 3 -- set II of 1/31/78. It's VERY tasty. I don't think I'll get much past Playin' bc I am running on fumes after working six 12 hour shifts in the last seven days. But just seeing Dave's 57 lifted my spirits and gave me a jolt of energy. I hope the same is true for everyone else, and I hope everyone's delivery happens soon! Cheers
jolted
then again this pitb got really strange and drums seems spooky... must... keep... listening
Starting with 1/31
The Let It Grow was interesting, Scarlet>Fire is tight. The sound on these just keeps getting better !
Thanks Dave..

Per the description:
This 5LP, 180-gram vinyl set is the second installment of a five-part series of breakouts from the sold-out, limited-edition ‘June 1976’ CD Boxed Set originally released in 2020.

5-part series.
Sounds like the entire Box will be pressed to vinyl.

Oro - Transitional Dead
Dave was reading your posts on "transitional Dead", lol. His liner notes mimic what you have been describing in your sequential research by year posts. Great minds think alike I guess.
Just starting DaP 57 number 12770/25000, like many others, (chronologically lol) with disc 3. Very smooth Scarlet>Fire.
Cheers
Smooth seems to describe the rest of disc 3 as well. Nice noodling out of Space into Black Peter. Sound is play it loud good. Let 'er rip!
Jeez! That is one serious Let It Grow. Got the '78 growl.
Firsty the funny guy ; )
Ha, if he was reading our posts maybe we’d get at least some of what WE want! ; ) lol
But to me, that is the only way to fully grasp the music. As he states, often very subtle shifts which are not readily apparent unless you do the work and check em all in order with big ears! I find the audio changes more noticeable during this particular transition than perhaps the music? Need to dig deeper into that sometime? I know Bob was messing with different custom Ibanez guitars, and tried the Musician series (like I have) when they back started up in May through the summer I believe? (Many pics mis dated?) JG tried one at least once that I saw a picture of, but not sure when/where?
The thing I need to check is when Bob stuck that Peavey amp/preamp? in his rig along with the Mesa-Boogie pre amp. That and the keyboards seem most obvious sonic differences, but again, I need to do my homework…

But hey 57 was grabbed from the PO this AM so I checked out those liners via your suggestion. Prolly crank it Saturday as TOO is off to brunch lol
Like a thief in the night
My copy showed up silently outside the front door sometime Tuesday night. It would've sat there till morning except Tuesday is garbage eve, so I needed to venture outside to take a bag of bottles into the recycling. And whoopdeedoo there it was.
I've listened to discs 1 and 2 and I feel like, as with a lot of '78 shows the first set's kind of uneven, second set is unstoppable. Excellent Jack Straw and FOTD followed by cowboy medley made regrettable by the inaudible vocals. Sunrise is a trial to listen to, and I'm no Donna hater. Then a really interesting jam on Sugaree, followed up by Samson-Around-Let It Grow which are ... fine, although presenting them in this order kind of loses the feel of listening to a full show.
And then the second disc/set is just solid the whole way through. Nice Estimate>He's Gone, interesting jam out of Drums. Looking forward to what I hope is a similarly good/grate second set from 1/31.
First annual gathering of the Dnet diehards ?
Just a thought
Junior Phil and company playing 8/23&24 I believe, at nearby Glenwood Springs.
Cool little mountain/river town. Not too expensive, certainly a laid back scene, beautiful location etc AND Little Feat playing at awesome Vilar performing arts a few daze before…
-
Not sure what else the summer season brings, but the bigger type shows are way more denaros, logistically more complicated, and perhaps not as conducive to causal hang/meet up etc? Just a thought since some of us have been wanting to meet up someday/someway?
8/23 & 24
Oro - I was thinking the same thing re Terrapin Roadshow in Glenwood. Not sure of my calendar that far out but to be sure its "almost" in my backyard!
Hmm...
August huh?
Marking that down now.
Fernando Valenzuela pitches on Wednsday Ray? (Yeah.) I'm not doing anything Wednesday. Ya wanna see Fernando Valenzuela pitch Wednesday Ray? (Yeah.)
Cheers
My notes: Jack Straw- *fire*…
My notes:
Jack Straw- *fire*, evening news worthy
FOTD- great group effort with the syncopation, hints of the drumming that will arrive in April
Mama Tried- [standard]
Me and My Uncle- Jerry's solo sounds '72
(and with a little You Win Again noodling between songs???)
Ramble On Rose- [regular]
Cassidy- nailed both instrumental breaks, soaringly!
Sunrise- fitting, more hints of April drumming there at the end
Sugaree- Jerry is a little hard to follow on this one; what started out as dragon morphed into steampunk
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Samson- [sub-standard, but, right there at the tail end......]
IMHBTR- best Jerry song this far in; yeah, is good...
Estimated- ..... yep, uhhuh, now things are moving along, sight of a lonely train there on the horizon at the last minute or so....
He's Gone- ....smooth, like, sailing quiet smooth...
Drums- ....[transitional]...
Jam- ...Phil's turn to take the lead for a while, like it's pre-hiatus....
The Other One- ....holds up to high standards!
Wharf Rat- a wonderful minute sixteen second gospel hour
Sugar- filled with bells and fireworks the whole way through
Around- chimes like a crisp cold moon over a hill full of wintertime sledders (GO USA!!!)
In the car
10/19/73
Im up to Drums
Love the field notes, 5branch
Well, I met #8480 accidentally, in Saint Paul, Minnesota
Given my absolute LOVE for the two releases around it (DaP23: 1/22/78 and DP 18: 2/3&5/78), I can almost guarantee that I will adore this release. If you told me those other two were the best-ever releases, I could not argue.
Minneapolis was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.
Be kind, rewind . . .
57..
Good show, HUGE sonic upgrade, but WHY was "A&A" not keept one disc 2, and "Roses" moved to disc 1.. ?
#57
Thanks for adding the new discussion board Mary.
#57-Smoking! This show is fun, really enjoyed it.
First set is good, well played. Second set is fantastic. Love the It must have been the roses, followed by a great estimated, into not Eyes (Ron M.) but He's Gone and this one is a smooth excellent version. Some times this song really hits me and this version does that. The Drums, Funky Jam into TOO, Wharf Rat and the two closers are a fun ride. Just wished this show didn't stop. Disc three from the previous night is even better. Would love the rest of the show.
Thank You Dane Man
I read ur comment when it finally sunk it.
Wait,,, did I number my copy wrong???
Yes I did,,, it's been fixed.
Thanks
1-31-78
Would Jan. 31 have worked better as the bulk of DaP57? I’ve not heard the whole show but disc three is definitely bending my ear more than numbers one and two.
I have a six CD carousel player, like so many do these days, so I’ve loaded in Dave’s pics 57, discs 3, 1, and 2, in that order, and then all three discs from Dick‘s #18. Should get me through the next few hours just fine.
RIP Ralph Towner
I’ll play some of his ECM albums and dig out my Oregon vinyl. A great guitarist.
Thanks Colin
I would have missed that.
I found only his 1978 album Batik with Eddie Gomez and Jack De Johnette in my ECM collection. Will spin that later today.
Cheers to Ralph Towner

I agree with much that has already been posted on this release. I've only done disc 1&2 so far. Hopefully disc 3 later tonight. Fine 1978 Dead!!
Rock on, gang
A couple of GD78s that rock real good that are...
seemingly lesser known:
6/4/78
6/25/78
This release is plenty good
I still want some raw stuff.
12/18/73 is a dream come true.
After that, let's have something from 66-70.
Some of that oooooold school!!!

Disc # 2 - Even better ...
... really like the Estimated (!) and the Jam > Other One > Wharf Rat sequence.

On to disc # 3 after the game

Finally made it to disc 3. Very nice indeed! I agree on the audio being fantastic.
# 57 - Disc 3
Very nice Scarlet Fire and Terrapin ... Playing is a little brief and drifts a bit at the end. Then, they're Absolutely Crushing it in the outro to Black Peter > Truckin' > Good Lovin'
.
Cheers & Thanks to DL & Co.!
