    MUST HAVE!!!!!!!
Could be the best show ever, also has a KILLER Dew and the "Sing me back Home" is one of the most tasteful and sweet songs I have heard by the Dead. Words do not describe what is going on during the re-enter of "The Other One" out of "Dew", some of the most interesting stuff I have come across over my years of mining...YOU MUST HEAR THIS!!!!!! Bob Weir sounds like Kimock!!!!! I can see where Steve picked up some of his swirls...Keith and Pig were meant to play together, it's a shame that the Thunderbird got the best of him... speaking of great shows.,.. there was a show that i previously had a tape of (the date escapes me now), but it had an amazing dark star... it was a '70s recording i'm almost positive... one of those dark stars that was around 30 or so minutes and had (i think) two specific parts (one around 8 min maybe, the other later in the song) that crescendo to the point where it makes you drive faster and you have to keep yr cool. very jammy stuff. any help would be appreciated in tracking this show date down again. i misplaced the recording i had. feel free to email me at my username at hotmail. thanks guys!

Ok here is my problem.... (like we all don't have plenty of those) Years ago I had a show that i traded for, ummm well, not sure what it was now that i gave up, but i do know it was a smoking Laguna soundboard that i got. While the show was awesome the real gem on the tape was the filler. It was a skit done by Jerry and Phil set in the future in Golden Gate Park. Nearest i can figure it must have been from a FM broadcast made for a New Years Show maybe. But who knows?..... Well that is what I'm asking.....lol Any help would be ..ahh... well helpful..... lol thanx folks and Stay Kind

I have just a handful of tapes. I recall one recording from April 85' at the Philadelphia Spectrum. I think it was April. Jerry's vocals sounded like Kermit the Frog. Have a few 76' sets and I think a complete 77 winterland show--complete 91' June Charlotte, NC and Greensboro, NC shows. Complete 90' July Raleigh, NC show. The jam after "Uncle John's Band" was great at this show. I am disappointed in the lack of anything past 92' on the Dick's Pick Series. I would have thought the last GD show at Soldier Field would have been preserved on CD for the ages. I want to have more 93-95 stuff.

Probably mentioned already, but worthwhile for any collector.
Being a "mostly seen em' in the 80's" head who likes to get the shows he was at plus all the other "recommended" ones....I'll chime in with one's I have and would gladly copy for anybody who needs or desires. 8/19/80 Uptown Theatre Chicago I and II. (let's do a mind melt....first "Rooster") 9/15/82 Capital Center, Landover, MD I and II (nice audience tape, uptempo show...First "Touch of Grey") 4/9/85 Philly Spectrum I & II SB w/ audience mix. CRISP...The first set is any collector's "MUST" with a "Midnight hour-Walkin the Dog-Big Boss Man opening 3 songs! Not to mention the rest of this HIGH ENERGY affair cooks. Get it for the 1st set alone! 6/30/85 Merriweather Post Pavillion, Columbia, MD I & II (Good time show with what myself (and a lot of others) consider to be the best Shakedown ever...what a "all one mind" jam it has...low Gen SBs) 7/1/85 Merriweather Post Pavillion I & II (Just a pickup of what they started the night before) and you can't beat the quaility of these SBs. 11/1/85 Richmond, VA Coliseum I & II...(Killer low gen boards and arguably (though no argument in my eyes) the best show of 1985...probably one of the best shows of the 80's. 3/19/86 Hampton, VA Coilseum - I & II Low Gen Audience (overall great show, first of the few "Visions of Johanna") 3/20/86 Hampton I & II...low gen aud. (everybody's gotta have the first Box of Rain in 13 years, even though the Althea beforehand is torturous with Jerry's fumbling of the lyrics. 12/27/86 Henry J. Kaiser Auditorium Oakland CA I & II. (low gen audience). Trippy show. Great "Dancin" and just overall nice performance. Those early "jerry's back shows really are worth having. next 3 I have both sets of each show. 12/28/86 (as above...) 12/30/86 (as above PLUS this show just was spectacularly played) 12/31/86 (well, it's NYE, show was "OK" but was nice quality tapes and worth any collection. 3/22/87 Hampton I & II - Board with audience mix.(NICE) Back on the east coast again after a long hiatus for Jer & the boys. Just the shear ENERGY is worth having this gem. 3/23/87 Hampton I & II - Board w/ aud mix low gen. If you don't have this show. YOU NEED IT. I prefer the 1st set with a SWEET "Stranger" and it just gets better. 3/24/87 Hampton II - Board/aud mix...the TERRAPIN for the ages. The band plays the audience, the audience plays the band, the energy BLEW THE ROOF OFF the coliseum on this night. Still sends shivers when I think about what we were all part of. ; ) I could go on, and have SO many more great tapes that are low gen SB's. I had/have a very good source close to Healy so that helped. (as well as lots of backstage visits : ) but just to name a few more off the top of my head, here are more without details, but WORTH the have. Contact me if you need something and I'll let you know if I have it, k. ; ) 87/ Laguna Seca both shows..Roanoke both shows...Red Rocks all 3 shows both sets..MSG a mix of them but 9/18 for sure. New Years 12/30-31/87.... 88/ Hampton all 3 nights (boards), Buckeye Lake (both sets, NICE CRISP audience), Greek Theatre all 3 nights both sets all boards. (that first night first set was insane and the Shakedown and Friend of the Devil are outstanding.....not to mention.....) : ) , Laguna Seca (CRISPYYYY! audience low gen), and if you don't have the "Playin in the Band" from this show, email me NOW!! ; ) And the list goes on. I have so many. just ask....but those were all shows I attended that are very much worth having for your collection. peace out, ~Tom ( The AllTomMitt Drawing Machine)

I have a partial that I picked up somewhere, but I'm hoping some kind soul has the full show. Also, hoping and praying that a soundboard appears from somewhere of the 10/18 and 10/19/80 shows at the Saenger in New Orleans. I have aud recordings (for which I am enternally grateful) but would love to hear them again clear. From what I've heard/read even the band thought these shows were incredible. . . Figured if there was a place that these could be found, this would be it. Peace y'all.

The record only has the track listing Side 1 - Know you Rider, Casey Jones, Uncle John's Band Side 2 - Sugar Magnolia, Good Lovin. It also says MEL - 77 on the record. It sounds like an early 70's recording. Just wondering if anyone knew exactly what this is, who made it, where it came from?. Just curious and thought it was interesting. Take Care everyone. Thanks to the mods for putting up this topic! Okay, now I have a question. I have a giant hole concerning goods shows from the 80s (only DPs, official releases, and a show from july 84). My knowledge of the Brent years is sorely lacking. Any 80's recommendations? As for an essential show or run of shows I'll throw out the "From Egypt with Love" run in Oct '78 at the Winterland. I think these are kind of underrated shows. I was completely unaware of them until they were mentioned in passing by crazyfingers on the old message boards (BTW thanks crazyfingers!). It's the last great run with Donna and Kieth. Everyone is really on. Great, great playing. Yo Soy Boricua!

what is now DP 6:10.14.83 - Set II is IT! 2.26.77 - Swing Aud; First Terrapin & Estimated; beyond the pale 5.77 - cannot go wrong in this month/year If you like slower, mellow Dead, check out 1976, the music is slow langid and flowing. That entire years reminds me of what the Lady with a Fan would look like. Shows from Europe 1972; Fillmore East 1971 Anything or Everything from the Summer of 85; 11.1-2.85 VA Dead, of course :-) Summer 89-Spring 1990; Band in peak form going new places; much material to recommend. and 1991 with Bruce is terribly underrated, mostly due to the death of Brent, I feel. I still think that the shock of Brent's death took a long time for the fans to come to terms with. Jerry had the music and Bruce to help him out. I felt lost for the longest time and it wasnt until several shows into 91 (3.31 to be exact), that I felt the fit. Sorry I cant be more specific, my memory HATES me now. But the guys and gals on this site will not let you down. I am a mere mortal in the presence of grateness on this site~ Cheers. “The Omnipotent Grateful Dead!”

Both nights at the Hampton Coliseum were great, but 10/9/89 stands proudly in the pantheon of all time best Dead shows (in my humble opinion). "Dark Star -> Drumz -> Death Don't", is earth shattering. The first "Attics" in over 17 years is magic! Certainly a must have tape.Rock on. -Hunter "The bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean."

Hal R,Totally agree with the 69 fillmore west run in late feb early mar. I was lucky enough to get the box set with all the shows. Blew my mind. The Dead were insane psychedelic monsters at that time. I like the '80's suggestions from Hunter and JohnnyG. Awsome! I've been listening on the archive. JohnnyG, I agree with you on '91 being a killer year. Wish Bruce had stayed on full-time. Submitted for your approval: 6/17/91 Giant's Stadium -- Eyes of the World, Walkin' Blues, Brown Eyed Women, Masterpiece, Loose Lucy, Cassidy, Might As Well, Saint of Circumstance> Ship of Fools-> Truckin'> New Speedway> Uncle John's Band-> Drums> Jam> China Doll> Playin' reprise> Sugar Mag, E: The Weight Note: Dark Star theme throughout show. Hey everyone, brand new to the wonderful world of the dead over here, so please bear with me I was wondering where to start, when it comes to live shows. I'm looking for early era recordings. Circa late 60s early 70s. What are some of the best shows for someone who never experienced them live? Thanks in advance. I would love to get a hold of some recordings where they just jammed at the tests, are those available? Apologies for the dumb questions in advance. I have over 200 blank CD-R and have no problem sending and paying for shipping and what not. My goal is to fill those with live DEAD. My fav. years are: 1970, 1972 , 02-14-70 set 2 is brilliant, almost all of europe 72 is really, really good, get the complete 05-26-72 Lyceum...it's simply too good. there are alot of brent years that are good shows, don't always go by the setlist, especially during 1985 - that isn't a good year for performances - jerry had some problems that year, of which finally came to light in his "coma" in 86 - for example, 06-22-93 is a very good performance, but the setlist is average - I really need my deadbase on hand beside me to type in some dates. The Hamburg 72 show is really good too, there is a aud source that floats around , it would be nice to have the master available , it sounds like the mics are placed from the balcony rail. If you ever find (I think it's jim wise's senn 421's) 04-01-91 that are 20' space on the balcony rail , you won't want the soundboard, as well as Silberman's 04-21-84 PCM master with Nuemann U-87's... I'll go for now, but I'll be back! Ursa I wish that for just one time, You could stand inside my shoes, and for just that one moment, I could be you - Bob Dylan, Positively 4th St.

A good place to start for 1977 is 5/8/77 Cornell University. You HAVE to hear this show. 5/8/77 is essential. There were other shows during that run (New Haven, Buffalo, Boston) that are just as essential. You can easily download these for free at Nugs.net. Just click on Free Stash, and click on Grateful Dead (there are many other shows there available for free as well). Go ahead, do this now. Hunter is right; DP 15 9/3/77 is great. Other Dick's Picks chronicling 1977 you can start with: DP # 3-- 5/22/77 Pembroke Pines FL DP # 29-- 5/19/77 Fox Theater GA & 5/21/77 Lakeland Fl (Yeah may '77 was that good, too bad I was only 2yrs old :) DP # 34--11/5/77 Rochester DP#10-- 12/29/77 Winterland These shows will give you a fair portrait of the Dead in 1977. Ah, yes... mp3's. Very easy to aquire, if you know how. Stream the audio. In WMP, I just right click on "File", "Save Media As..." and away you go. You'll have to do that for each tune. You may or may not have to rename each file. Probably very similar for Mac users.

WOW!!!! This was actually the second tape of the dead that I ever did myself. An old college radio station had an hour or so deadicated to the boys every Tues., I think. So I taped it complete with a flip and everything. It was one of my most cherished tapes I had, forever. For one, I taped it myself, which was cool cuz it gave me something to trade with and Two....Are you phucking kidding me with what Phil did here. The tug of war so to speak of Jerry and Phil going back and fourth as to were they going into the Other One and when.... and then Bobby pulling out the Bobby Mcgee......Truly primal Of note.... I have a really good recording of the second set from the Berkley Community Theatre from 8/21/72 which was right before the infamous Veneta show that is often overlooked, but which I think is comparable. ( Despite some horrible tape flips and edits) The quality is board and if anyone is intrested, hit me. Overall a great month in deadistory. KOT...... Check out the Shelter from the Storm if ya'll feel the need for some healing.

I just heard the best LL Rain I've ever heard on the Sirius channel, but my player doesn't tell me the date unless it's a full show broadcast. Bob says something like "now for something really sad" when he opens it up, and Jerry plays slide guitar on the whole thing. Can anyone help me find which show this is from? Anything with Jerry playing slide peaks my interest . . .

On Dicks Picks 30 before a Jerry steeled Looks Like Rain, Bob says "time for a cryin' song folks". I believe it's from 3/28/72. It's a pretty good version too at least until Phil belts out "I'll still sing you love songs" in only a way Phil knows how! ;-)

Great setlist with a Dark Star>Kesey Rap>Drums>Space>Dark Star during the second set. Though it is overly stated the May '77 run is amazing.
