Boys were hittin' on all cylinders. Jerry took the stage, plugged in, threw the strap over his shoulder and launched with Touch. Both sets sizzled. Highlights: Half Step>Rider>Playin'>UJB>Supp. Jam; Comes A Time

this show from the greek is just smoking. i have an audience recording that not only perfectly captures all of the bands playing perfectly, but, has the right levels of the audience at the right times. the post space tunes are in excellent contrast to each other culminating with a morning dew that is so beautiful it will bring you to tears. the gimme some lovin has some fun jamming and tight playing with all especially phil and brent. this is a top notch 80's show featuring my favorite dead keyboardist, brent 7-15-88 Greek Theater Shakedown Street Walkin' Blues Friend of the Devil Queen Jane Approximately Dire Wolf Good Time Blues Turn on Your Love Light Cassidy Bertha Scarlet Begonias Fire on the Mountain Man Smart/Woman Smarter Ship of Fools Estimated Prophet drums I Need a Miracle The Wheel Gimme Some Lovin' Morning Dew Turn on Your Love Light

I have a friend who walking down the street in Greenville, SC recently, wearing his funky old SYF cap, and a guy stopped him and asked him if he wanted his GD collection: 1257 hours of LIVE DEAD on CD. My friend ain't a deadhead. If you want it, let me know (PM me)

Hello, I don't have noncommercial recordings to trade. I can offer four blank CDs, two of which a friendly taper could keep, and the other two could be used to record the final set of the 13th. The recorded pair could then be mailed back in a stamped, self-addressed bubble envelope. I'm particularly interested in the 3rd set, the electric one with Dark Star/The Other One/Turn On Your Love Light. I wish I had more to offer. If anyone is interested please contact me. I am in the process of transferring 3000 cassette tapes to CD. As they are transferred, I no longer need the tapes. But I just cannot dump them in the trash. Right now I have about 1000 tapes in 2 large boxes in the garage. They are free for the taking. I live in San Rafael, CA. Send me a note mpie@rccostello.com if you are interested. Best regards, Mark

DO NOT use those fancy adhesive labels on your discsI used to put them on my discs and they would look nice as I would import all these cool colors and graphics and run them thru the color printer BIG MISTAKE... over time, the adhesive interaction with the media rendered them useless My CD player wouldn't read them, the ones it could read had an incredible amout of static. I was able to save about 100 or so recently but must have lost 100-150 discs... Regarding essential 1980's shows (as that was the original topic) in addition to what's been mentioned: 9/2/80 quite possibly the year's best show & a '77-esque Sugaree IIRC 9/11,12,13/81 Greek 6/30/85 killer Shakedown! 7/1/85

Does anyone have a copy of this list? I was always interested in finding what the shows to have were, and I keep seeing posts on the Web about this poll. Of course, it lists 5/8/77 as #1 but I wanted the whole list to get started on the collection.

If you look up Dick's Picks #4 on Wikipedia, it references this tape trader poll and says that the 2/13/70 show was #2 with 5/8/77 being #1.

I always go back to the tapes that originally turned me on. The ones where I knew I had heard something that really hit me on a personal level. The ones that changed the way I listen to music in general. The ones where i got it for myself, for sure, no question about it. A lot of these have been mentioned multiple times already so I will leave those out until I write my autobiography. In no particular order: 12-05-1971 Love the SOUND. Cool echo/reverb plus amazing jams. SOTOTW! 04-18-1971 Tight, passionate, concentrated, FOCUS. Great banter! 05-04-1972 Elegant, class. Flowing, natural, pure, effortless, IN the pocket. 10-26-1989 My 2nd show. Stunned into silence! Cathartic, arrow thru the heart. 07-08-1990 First show that I was physically transported by. Got on the floor, inside the sound. 06-14-1991 Help peeled my face off, Slipknot rearranged my chromosomes, plus the rest! 08-21-1972 Great Dark Star, great feel, great soundboard. 06-18-1974 Favorite 1974 show. Dreamy, lazy, fiery, what summer is all about. This is the super-short version of my list.

The tape that originally made me go, "WOW! I have to see this band live!" was the second set of 1/15/79. The segue from "Miracle->Shakedown" still ranks as one of my all time favorite, and the meandering mess that is the near 40 minute "Playing" makes me smile and dance to this day. I have a tape player in my home office to this day so that I can play THAT tape. It sounds better on tape, that show.

I need the answer(s) to an idiotic question but here goes...Is there one show from the Europe '72 run that could be considered the 'most' essential? I just can't afford the $450 right now for the entire run but would like to know if there is just one show that needs to be heard.

Some earlier mentioned after Brent past Vince didnt fuel Jer in any way nor come even close to filling the Brent void. Then on some runs when Hornsby had the big grand up there that really fuelled Jerry to drive his leads up on to another plateau based on Hornsby's style. Other than the fact that I personally can't stand Vince's and Bruce's vocals which almost sound the same and Hornsby was too loud some nights brought Jer into a volume war and a creativity war exchanging leads with Bruce. I believe it was the 2nd night deer creek91 2nd set Scarlet

I bough the cheapest blanks I could find and I have many recorded from the late 70s that still sound pristine. Not only are the blanks bad quality, they got hauled around to different parst of the country. I've lost maybe 2-5% of my collection. Maybe it has something to do with playing them on a regular basis, One tape I have blows away Dick's Pick's (#?) Salt Palace. OMG, the Other One is molecular. Like Dick said: Caveat Emptor. To be fair, it is the only tape I have that is better than a DP and the DP actually caught Phil's into. much more clearly. I have heard from hard core tapers about tape degeneration. I just got lucky, I guess

Days Between. That song had so much potential, yet all the versions that I remember seeing or hearing, just don't do it justice. The TRI version was sweet, but I'd love to get my hands on or listen to on the archive the best possible version(s) of this beautiful song with JG singing and leading the charge. It's one of those tunes that could've been the modern day "Morning Dew." THank you.
