Follow the Grateful Dead's transformation from a bar band performing as the Warlocks to becoming the creators of their own sound and forefathers for the jamband culture with GRATEFUL DEAD ORIGINS, an original graphic novel written by Chris Miskiewicz and illustrated by Noah Van Sciver.

Due early 2020, GRATEFUL DEAD ORIGINS will be available in a standard edition and a limited run collectors deluxe edition. The standard edition will come in a softcover version that will feature an exclusive download of Grateful Dead music from their early years to serve as a companion to the graphic novel. The limited run collector's deluxe edition will come in a hardcover, oversized, individually-numbered coffee table edition featuring prints and autographed by the comic creators.

Curated by Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux, the Standard Edition comes with a download of some of the best tracks from the band’s early years, while the Deluxe Edition, which is limited to 6,800 units, comes with an unreleased 1968 Grateful Dead covert on vinyl.

Has anyone noticed that only Jerry's vocals are on the 8/21/68-Set 2 vinyl LP released in January....as opposed to all vocals on the Miller transfer?

    Maybe it is sold out!!!

Maybe my extra copy is worth 5,000 dollars!!! I could quit the head shop and start staying home at night. That kind of money would make retirement a dream come true!!!!

I think you're right, the books should have been signed. I too got the little card with only 1 signature.

All in all a cute set, but this thing has had the kiss of death since the get-go.

I'll double check, but maybe the "prints" have signatures I missed. The "prints" weren't much to talk about either. Back of my mind I guess I thought poster size, not legal paper size. Once again, cute set, surprised it's not sold out. I would have thought the vinyl would have been the impetus for a lot of people (at least 6,800!).

Well when that day comes when people are interested and hankerin' for a copy, somehow I got two!!!! (Yes, I was charged for both)

    Autographed?

I received my copy this past week and while looking through it was wondering about the "autographs of the comic creators" (plural). The only thing I see that is signed is the certificate of authenticity card which indicated what number my copy was and that came slipped inside the front cover (and which only had Chris Miskiewicz's (the writer's) signature) (singular).

I was expecting a page in the book itself to be signed by both the writer and the illustrator... but maybe that is just me... or maybe I got a defective/unsigned copy.

    From the product description:

Is the whole book by the same artist? It looks nice but I think they missed an opportunity by not having the artist who did the 78 Red Rocks Box set's art for this release.

I would have liked to have seen the whole soundboard show issued, it would have spread nicely over six sides of 180g
vinyl.

Agree with the suggestion to get us the full show (especially at this price). ...But I think I would have sprung for it if the format was a CD vs. LP. So this is a pass.

I wake up each morning, hoping to learn of a release from 1968, so please don't leave this music as a special-edition, LP-only offering! I would have pre-ordered this the moment I saw it if there were a CD version . . .

to bitch about an 8-21-68 show segment produced as a 'companion' to another silly book.

Yet, as with Warfield 1980 as an RSD release, I have to believe that once they see sales peak and decline on this 'Origins' thingy, they'll get around to the CD release. Perhaps April 2020? About when the Workingman's re-release w/'70 show disc comes out. And we get word on the 2020 box.

Has to happen, though. 8-21-68 forever frozen in vinyl? Say it ain't so!

Its a great year in my estimation...but this release feels a bit under the radar somehow. I would worry about ordering a vinyl album from dead.net to England... I mean, what could possibly go wrong? Plus I am not so interested in the accompanying book. If it was available on Amazon, or from a British outlet I would order it today. But there you go...I haven't even checked to see if it is available in this country. As I say...under the radar.

DAVE ROCK

The standard, paperback, version of the book can be ordered from amazon.co.uk but this doesn’t get you the vinyl. I looked at the possibility of ordering the limited edition but that was directly from the book publishers and the postage to the UK was ridiculously high so I decided against buying it.

Colin-thanks for the heads up. I have just had a look on Amazon, and sure enough, there it is. It does say in the description that the purchase features music, but not in what form-so I am guessing it would be a download.

Seems the wrong way round-a graphic novel, with the addition of a live show. I would have thought the main point of interest was the live show, not the graphic novel. Maybe it will get a stand alone release in this country next year at some point.
Also, maybe that's why I keep forgetting about it...it is being sold as book rather than an album.

Gents, I see that "Origins" is available as a pre-order and release date is 17 April 2020 -- and Record Store Day is 18 April 2020. My completely uninformed guess would be that they make the partial show available as a single CD on RSD 2020. I'd hope for the full show, but think how that would land with folks who shelled out for the book.

I'll remain calm and see if my guess comes to be.

Too much hating on the LP... we get a lot more CD releases than LP releases... agree that that a whole show would be better but the darkstar>st Stephen > 11 > Mercy jam is classic...

Just that this is a vinyl offering (good for you, not for those of us sticking with CD), so I'm merely calling for availability on CD as well.

I ordered this book the same day I ordered the "early bird" Dick's Picks 2020 subscription package. I understood the first two delays due to COVID-19 but now this is no longer acceptable. This was suppose to be out by the end of March. Now the release date is the end of July. The very least I expect is an explanation for the delay from Dead.net. I am beginning to think this product is not worth the price I paid and definitely considering asking for a refund.

My wife preordered this from the comic book publisher's website as an anniversary gift, and she forwarded me an email from them specifying that 7/31 was the newly confirmed release date. They even included pictures of the finished product to verify that it was made and ready to go.

If I may be so bold, it would a kind gesture to send a digital copy to all of us who helped get this funded and purchased back in 2019 since it's been one delay after the next. I get that we're in the middle of a pandemic, but #cmonman.

Call me crazy...

I don't understand how they can still take orders for this? It is still under "pre-order" , but was supposed to be ready in March? It is "limited edition" etc, but I can still PRE-ORDER something delayed by almost 1/2 a year?

Honestly, it seems like the old trick record companies use...let's offer a "limited edition" record that goes on sale for 2 months...once everyone buys it at a high price they extend the on sale time.

This combined with the extremely high priced VMP collection and the fact that the "Workingman's Dead" 50th all were sold, shipped and released well after this makes me think they didn't sell enough.

Something just seems off. Maybe send the digital download as mentioned or for those that ordered well before the 1st release date throw in a cool signed print, 7" or something to say...sorry.

Is this sold out?

I dawdled on ordering because the date kept getting pushed back. I went to order today & couldn't add to cart.

Or did it get pushed back again & they stop taking orders?

Just rec'd this a few minutes ago. I imagine the vinyl production is delaying the release. Blue Note had numerous delays in its Tone Poet due to COVID delays for RTI , the company that was pressing their vinyl

Dear Dead.Net Customer,

We deeply apologize but we are still experiencing issues with some components of the Origins Deluxe Edition due to COVID. In order to deliver a product that meets both our standards and yours, we will be moving the ship date to Fall 2020. As a thank you for your patience, please enjoy a downloadable sneak peek from the graphic novel below.

Is it delayed/sold out?

Or is it delayed/not taking more orders until you get a firm completion date?

I am not in a hurry. Would still like to order.

Many thanks for all your hard work.

i also delayed ordering on Dead.net and then came back today to find it wasn't available. So....since I can't order on Dead.net at the moment, I just ordered mine on the publisher's website: z2comics[.]com/collections/shop/grateful-dead. it says shipping on July 31st but based on the comments in this thread i imagine it will be delayed. Nevertheless... i was able to order it.

I am losing faith in dead.net, I ordered this back in May for my mom for Mother's day and am very disappointed it has not been received yet. Not only that, but just 2 emails saying COVID has affected the order with the last one coming in July. I get that's a problem, but I have received a ton of items from small business over the internet during this, no excuse that a cash cow like the Grateful Dead can keep up this image by taking over $500 of my money during a pandemic over 4 months and not have a single item delivered. I love the Grateful Dead but this model of taking money for orders that do not come and have very little correspondence over months is ridiculous;

Ordered this elusive sucker back in May. Got the apology email with the appeasement graphic. Got the email announcing release in Fall which technically ends December 21. I thought I would hear something before mid-October. Maybe? Then I'm thinking there is something up with the packaging or the vinyl pressing itself. It must have been the fire at Apollo Masters. Ok. It's Covid. Supply chains are being stretched. Family members are sick. Everything is slower. Our patience is being tested. Which ain't so bad. But I have to echo previous sentiments. Very disappointing. Throw us a bone. An email. "We haven't forgotten you! We're sorry, we fucked up, we'll make it up to you! Here's a tshirt, a cup, I dunno, a sticker?!...............................................Love Paul

Come on Dead.net time to treat your customers with a bit more respect and post an update - it has been 3 months since your last email and we are now well and truely into fall.

Thanks for asking,,,, I want to know also. Delayed is one thing,,,, this is past reasonable.

They should throw something our way.

Lets ask something every other day and keep this on top of the list.

(Be nice to hear about the American Beauty vinyl AND the damn download issues ALSO!!! )

If it is being released on 11 December then it is not going to get accross the pond before Christmas, missing the Fall "deadline" I should plan for it to arrive August 2022 and I guess it may arrive before i'm dead ( that is a joke in bad taste ). I'd like to be happy and all smiley about the delay, and say gee we have COVID so its understandable , thank you for telling us

..... I never know if she is part of the "organization" or is doing this on her own dime.

I always feel bad for her and the stuff she has to handle. Unless, or course, it's her job. :-)

If she can help anyone, help those waiting for limited things first in my book. I sure she has no way to help delivery date of this book. I'd further venture TPTB know about the bitching.

Now, about my download!!! C'MON PTB,,, hook me up with a good link!!!
