Whether they were "smart" ( I think they were) or just lucky to light up their synapses in a such a creative and evocative manner - which translated and evolved into the music and audience bond that continues to this day - they created a platform for communicating JOY.
.
I experience it (almost) every time that I listen, and it's hard for me to imagine what this world would be like - what my outlook and connections would be - without having experienced so much of it (GD & JGB), or having access to hearing the joy the Band & Crew felt in the moment, that others communed with first-hand ... via the recordings.
.
In that way - recall JG's flash on the Watts Tower - they truly did "create something that couldn't be torn down", something (JOY) that gets etched into your wiring, something that humanity so dearly needs >> As it leads to and hopefully perpetuates LOVE & KINDNESS

I can't think of one way it didn't change my life.

PS. Once I was lost, now I'm found!

Ditto! And welcome.
Check my user name, lol.
But I did have somewhat of a hiatus from 1980-1990 when David Gans' Grateful Dead Hour radio show got me back on.
Cheers

All else aside, there's a lot of people I would never have met that are now basically family.
