So I suggested to Mary that we start a topic so we could all introduce ourselves here.I feel like I've gotten to know quite a few here and we've developed a great little community but I still want to know a little more. Is Rick really a pilot? What's going on in Bartlett, NH? What does KJ7XJ mean? etc etc I guess since it was my suggestion, I'll kick it off. I live in Brooklyn, NY with my wife and little boy who turns 2 tomorrow. And we have a little girl on the way. So I guess with all the chaos in our little household, the music gives me a mini vacation. I work as a photographer and photo retoucher and I happen to work a lot from the home office which is very conducive to burning discs... Unfortunately, I got into the Dead way too late. I started listening to the Dead when I was a teenager in the early 90's (ouch). But being that I have a somewhat addictive personality, I haven't stopped listening in the last 18 years now. I only made it to 3 shows, one at MSG and two at Highgate, VT. I remember the VT shows as being fun, but utterly underwhelming, musically. To make up for the lack of live shows, I traded tapes actively in the 90's (anyone remember Terrapin Tapes?) and again haven't stopped since. It's an obsession but its pleasing! I hope to hear a little more from you all if you feel like sharing. Thanks to everyone here for the great music and great spirit. Reid

Hi Everybody, New to the (new site). Long time head. First show 3/9/81 at good old MSG. I am real interested in joining in on a vine or two. I have no idea how to get started ...so any help is appreciated. I plan on keeping a look out for new vines as they are posted. Pete

I have been married for 27 years and we have 3 sons. We live in Lincoln Nebraska and my boys have now grown into young men and have been in and out of the house, but are all at home now due to college or car payments. The youngest went with my wife, best friend and I to the 10,000 Lakes Festival and caught a fantastic Phil and Friends show in 2005, and this summer my middle son caught Ratdog at Bonneroo. Haven't got my oldest son to a show. Got on the bus (see that thread for my full story) on 6-16-74 in Des Moines, Iowa and saw many shows in the 70"s (Winterland June '77 run and that Dec NYE '77 run come to mind). And then though the early 80's, mostly in the midwest, esp. once the boys were born, then less roadtripping and more home & work, catching fewer shows. Last shows I attended were the '95 Sam Boyd Silver Bowl run in Las Vegas. Have worked in the mental health field in a variety of capacities for the last 3 decades. As I have said before I am 'old school' and I'm working feverishly to keep up with the times. This is MUCH better than the old tapes and letters back and forth!! I have loved the vineyard and all the efforts by fellow viners to share the treasures that the Grateful Dead shared so freely with us. This sharing has been great and I have enjoyed connecting with all of you. It does remind me of those July Red Rocks '78 shows, where I met so many east and west coasters in the middle of the country (a little west of Nebraska, but...) and we immediately connected and 'had a real good time' courtesy of that wonderful venue, our rabid shared enthusiasum for this amazing band of musicians who regaled us all with their wild musical transportation devices, spinning their mystical tales, country, rock, americana, then taking us off into the stratosphere with massive jam/space and slowing down to softly caressing us goodbye with a ballad...until the next show. I think i am probably the old man of these realms. I was born in the City of Brighton in England way back in the 50's. I first saw the GOGD back in 1970 at the Hollywood festival. altogether i saw the Dead 15 times, mostly in 1990. I worked for the railway in England for more than 35 years and retired on my 50th birthday and moved to Spain coz the weather is better than England and the cost of lioving is cheaper. Hi folks - Great thread.... Hi this is Eric, Ive been on the bus since the early 80s. My first show being the US festival in Devore CA 9/5/82. Since Operator asked.... One of my other hobbies is HAM radio. My FCC issued license is KJ7XJ I have held 3 other class licenses but I will spare the techie stuff for only those who are curious... if your wondering what HAM radio is a good site that can help is ARRL.ORG and for you folks across the pond...RSGB.ORG Im married for almost 10 years and have 2 wonderful kids, a cat and live in a bedroom community SE of Portland OR in the Columbia River Gorge (on the WA state site for those who know the area) I saw my last show in AZ in 1994 and have caught a few other jam band type show since then but my main attraction was the 80s (as I was a teen/20 something with nothing to do but have them follow me around).... I have a huge tape collection which got flooded last summer from a mad water heater and so I got back onto the net and asked for help. I got shown the wonder world of FLAC,SHN trades and since comming back to cyberspace, found the new and improved DEAD.NET site. Right around this time is when the vince thread started. As in all of us,that is just one facet of this diamond in the rough. I was born in 1952 in Wyoming. In late 1967 my family moved to the San Francisco bay area. Guess I was about 15 then. My first Dead show in 1969. That summer we moved to Colorado and this has been home ever since. This is where I saw the remainder of my shows During high school here I was working part time and meet a girl from the neighboring high school. Well we became good friends and in 1975 she married me (and had put up with me ever since.) Sandy (that is her name) is the mother of our two daughters. Both of whom have flow from the nest. One lives in Santa Fe with her husband. The younger daughter lives 40 miles up the road and is pursuing her profession. We have lived in this town for 31 years now and have seen tremendous changes. The citizens even elected me as there Mayor for ten years. (Yes Dead heads can hold positions of public trust. But my being a Dead head never came up.) I have been working for a major Colorado brewer for the last 35 years. Various jobs from beer bottle washer to manager. Now they pay me to play, I get to work and trouble shoot problems that occur in the warehouse operations. We use a main frame computer and data radios to direct the loading operations. Old technology by todays standards but reliable. Guess I will keep plugging away there for a few more years. (Retiring to the south of Spain sounds like fun some days.) I never was a trader of tape and shows, So this vining thing is a new world for me. All of your contributions and insights have helped to make my life just that much richer. THANK-YOU so much. Hey now My name is Kim. I first saw the dead in 1987 when I was 16. There are various other thread on this site when I describe that. I saw the dead over 100 times between 1987 and 1992. Probably saw the Jerry band at least that many times if not more. Still have every single ticket stub to every dead show i went to. It was an awesome ride. I used to collect tapes like mad. At the time, I didn't know many girls that did. The college I went to (ucsc) had a radio show specifically for taping dead shows. They would take a break and tell you when to flip the tape and everything. I broke my leg in many places when I was 20 and was bed ridden for 6 months. I made it through that with the help of deadheads/tape trading. Still have alot of my tapes, but sadly my tape players are all almost dead. Took a "break" from being a deadhead so to speak and concentrated on school for a while. Now found this site and have been having an AWESOME time with the vines. I have enjoyed getting to know people through this site, and my cd collection has blossumed. I am a small animal veterinarian. I am married to an equine (horse) surgeon and live in Florida. That takes up a large part of my time. I have alot of animals, and a family on the way hopefully soon. I dont have many deadhead friends where I live anymore, so I enjoy being able to share stuff with you all on this website. It has been great.

Thomas D I want to thank operator for starting this topic..first things first, I live in the Bronx, born and bred here...My first show was Englishtown 77( I was only 16),I saw about 60 shows on and off during the bands last 15 years. I was a photographer in the early eighties, but I ended up chasing the same powders that did Jerry in...lost everything (for the first time)...with nothing to lose I picked myself up and went back to school, this being the late eighties early nineties. This is also the period where I saw the most shows(10-9-89 Hampton, 9-10-91 MSG amongst others) Anyway I became a professor at CUNY(City University of NY),but my health and some more chasing of the same powders made me lose everything (again)I picked myself up(again) and while I am disabled I have been raising my niece, since my brothers death in 2003. Jamie is 10 now and has giving me new hope in my life. I have been powder free for seven years and frankly I don't believe I will ever get back to chasing them ever again( at least for today anyway) So today I listen and collect many shows( mostly from 68 to 77 ), buy GD CD's, and catch an occasional show, while trying to get Jamie on the bus, so far no luck. Taking care of her has been a blessing and and quite a challenge. While I can't imagine my life without the Grateful Dead Music, I certainly can't imagine it without her. I am still looking for a mate (female) to integrate into our lives...but what will be will be. Anyway I don't know if I said too much or not, but in about a hundred words or so I said what I am( and I am what I said???) Later...Tom

Ok, I guess I’ll just jump right in on this boat too.My name is Andy (Brewster boy) and the Brewster is for Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, NH where I went to high school and discovered the Dead from one of my friends. That was in 1977 and I had the opportunity to see these talented people play many times at a great time on their musical journey. My last show was at Soldier Field in 1990 or ’91 on a really cold summer day. I’m in my 50th. year and living in the White Mountain National Forest. I am property manager of a fine Inn just below Crawford Notch near Bartlett, NH. My favorite show has to be 9/6/80 (check this one out in the show look-up) because it was just Sooo Right! Everything about being young, free, high, with friends and a sense of community while just being there was something that will never be forgotten. Anyway, back around ’92 I lost all my Dead material (bummer) and had fallen from the world of the Maxell UD-XL2. With the help of everyone on this forum I have managed to start rebuilding what I lost and have missed so dearly over the years. It sounds weird but I used to have those shows that everyone had and still would like to posses some of those wicked boards like 12/1/79, 8/28/82, ’78 capitol theater, those Portchester, NY shows and many others I can’t think of off the top of my head. Hopefully these will become offerings over time. I wish everyone Peace and music dancing through the air. Andy

Like Oroboros and Hal R, I also worked in the mental health field. I worked at a group home and an apartment program in Michigan (where I am from) while in college then for a couple years in Boston after college. Yeah, I moved to Boston AFTER college. Entire town is made up of college students! Live in NYC now, practicing law as a contract attorney. Married to a wonderful and understanding (re: the Dead) woman and the rest of my immediate family consists of a golden retriever and two cats. Got on the bus in the early 90's while in college, only saw 9 shows but loved it, only in retrospect did I realize I saw the band in their decline. Before I got into vining, Dick's Picks were my main source for Dead enjoyment, followed by a radio program here called Morning Dew. Have about 200 tapes that I made listening to the program. Most of my knowledge of the Dead come from those sources as well as the Taping Compendiums (must haves IMO). Don't listen to the radio program any longer, like to go out on Sat nights now. I absolutely love being part of the vining community, so glad I discovered it. I go in and out of heavy Dead listening. For the 6 mos before finding this board, I listened exclusively to jazz. I have an interest in classic rock (someone made fun of Boston on one of these boards recently, HISSS, GREAT debut album) and early 80's music (childhood, I guess). Mostly it is the Dead and jazz. I have a pretty good collection of Miles and Coltrane, but I go a little deeper with Art Pepper, Dave Brubeck, and Don Ellis. Back to the Dead, I think the peak periods were '69, spring and fall '72, fall '73, all of '77, and very early '78. Of course, I love Dark Star and Dew, but I'd list Help>Slip>Franklin's, China>Rider, Scarlet>Fire and St. Stephen as favorite tracks/combos. I also love Brent!

I come from England, but live in France right now. I got into the Dead in 73, missed their 74 tour of Europe and did not see them until they came again in ’81 (my first show was my birthday show). I lost touch in the 80’s as the releases and European tours dried up and I was not hooked into any trader networks. Just played and loved the old vinyls. My interest revived when Dicks Picks and Vault Series started appearing. I last saw the Dead in 1990 on their final trip to Europe, and I was able to take my 8 year old son to one of the shows! I have been working and living in many parts of the world the last 12 years as an environmental and wildlife conservation adviser and trainer in developing countries. I still travel a lot and never leave home without an iPod stuffed with GD goodies. I may not have seen that many shows, but I have grooved to the Dead in at least 50 countries!! This vining community is great, long may it last. I’ve worked out how to do torrents and such, but my connection is very slow here and there’s nothing quite like a package of discs in the post! SPECIAL OFFER. If anyone wants some help keeping track of their GD collection, I can send them a simple Excel spreadsheet listing the dates and venues of all GD shows and the dates of most official live releases. It has 4 columns: Date, Venue, City/State/Country, Official Release with Material from Show. You can add more columns to check your shows as you collect them. I remember the Morning Dew radio show too...I got a lot of good quality tapes from that show...Amazing three hours of dead, no FM compression and whole sets or shows without interruption...Is it still on, what was it 99.5 or something like that? Thomas and Dstache-I tried to tune in to Morning Dew last weekend for the first time in a long while and it was a show formatted for PrinceHeads. That's my choice of moniker, but it seemed to be a show for people who are obsessed with Prince as much as we are with the Dead! What a shame to lose our show to Prince! Yama, I love the nickname! What a great story!

I figured this would be the place to appeal to my vining buds.I recently dicovered that a 100 stack of sony CDR's were defective and of course had no idea unless I listened past 40 min. I try to listen to these shows at my lesiure and of course dicovered this nightmare while floating along in a show. Seeing that I never had a problem with disks before, I stacked it up to a show with static etc. To my dismay, this static gets progressively worse until it shuts down my player etc. Soooo- I went through every freakin' show and discovered 59 bad disks! Needles to say, I took all of those defective one's to staple's and got a different stack (brand) of CDR's). My early appeal on the Winterland '72-'73 vine brought me to Rick (Ltapilot) who out of the kindness of his heart has almost replaced all of the lost material. AWESOME! I can't thank him enough for his time, effort and material. If he ever needs anything, I'm there. I have signed up for the 1978 Eurovine #2 again. So, my miracle is, Instead of signing up for another 5 vines, I was wondering if anyone would have these listed shows already done and could find it in their hearts to send them along on CD, DVD shn,flac etc. Of course anyone's time and material etc. would be compensated if need be. Joining in on deadnet a few days ago has been my first step to get in contact with Dead Heads. It took only a few hours, until I knew that I should have done so way earlier. Having read my "Personal" story, Leanne (iknowuruder) invited me to join the Acid Tests vine. Which I did. About the same time I started downloading like mad, wrestled with software and file lists in non chronological order, while trying to make it all as effective and as less time consuming as possible. Instead of introducing myself, I invite you to read my "Personal" story. And if you have any further questions, feel free to ask. This might be much better, simply because (among other things) I am a storyteller and sometimes just don't know when to stop. Hi all, Like many of you I've been lostening to the Dead since I was a teenager. My first Dead show was in Philly in Jan 79, but I saw Kingfish in Asbury Park, NJ in July 1976. I live in PA with my girlfriend, who is trying but still doesn't get the Dead. I'm also into jazz and modern classical music too. Music can't get to weird, as far as I'm concerned. It's all language and if we allow it then it can say all sorts of things. Bruce

Thomas D I just seen that you already got the 72-73 Shows...but your next(and last) on the vine list...I have the discs and nowhere to send them...If anyone else out there doesn't have them they are kick ass shows...Just PM me and their on the way to you...While I'm at it no ones signed up for the New Orleans shows, I have been asking for 3 weeks to see if anyone signs up... so far nothing...These are also great shows(1-30 and 31-70, and 2-1-70). Just add your name to the list on these shows and PM your address and they will be on there way to you PRONTO. Later Tom

This is what it's all about, and it still happens, Peace, Andy DVD/CD people, Here is a how-to on the deflacinization and a kickin' of the shn-s Hope this helps and if the link I put here is taboo, I know you will remove it. This looks complicated but this is the way I do it and once you do it 2 or 3 times, It becomes second nature and fast. If anyone has an easier way to do it, please advise. Good luck and peace, Andy You need to download trader’s little helper. http://tlh.easytree.org/files/tralih221151.exe 1.34 MB You need a DVD drive. Open trader’s little helper Load DVD If any screen opens on top of trader’s, close it. 6th. tab to the right, click on decode audio file(s) directly below that tab, click on Add. A new window will appear (Add files to decode) Scroll to the drive that the DVD is loaded in and click on it. Folders with show dates will appear. Click on a particular folder and all song files for that show will appear. While holding the left button on your mouse down, move it from right to left To highlight the files, Click “open” and wait a few seconds. Files will now be in trader’s helper (files to decode box) In the output location field, click on the alternate directory. Click on my documents, open new folder, name folder i.e. 12 31 1977 etc. Click ok On trader’s, click decode and you’re off, you’ll see the progress. That's all you need to do. Your show has been decoded (takes a few minutes) and transferred to wherever you sent it. From there you can burn your CD’s. If you look at the files, they are usually numbered by disk, so each set of numbers goes on a CD. As far as hard drive space, once you have burned your CD, you can delete the show and you have the same space as before.

You would have done the same thing. Just helping out where needed. Nice walk through of TLH. I did run across a more recent version that did not have the tabs across the top but had a standard windows looking menu bar. Just click on file, then decode (I think).
