Already ordered the boxset but thinking about this one as well. It would have made a nice companion to Dick's Picks 12 or 31 or Road Trips 2.3 and I enjoy those immensely. More early Brent!

Early Brent? This would have been Keith my dear friend, Brent joined in '79. This is prime Keith if anything. Anyway, I apologize for being "that guy" lol. This is going to be a neat compilation from that era though. I'm trying to figure out if I want the vinyl box, the art is cool but it's a shell of what the Cornell art was and what the main 19-CD set art is, anyway, I kniw beggars aren't choosers and it's still really cool, plus it's not about the box it's about the "rain" within it! This compilation has the 3 big jam segments I want without all the stuff I sort-of-don't-want. Very much like DP12 and Rt2.3 or the 5CD GD Movie compilation. And I will enjoy it so much, like those compilations, that I won't be able to keep from thinking "so great; wish I had the whole shows!". I have had the whole of some of these shows and know I don't really want them, but such is my Dead affliction... Huge thanks to the GDM brainbank for coming up with this collection! Pretty much perfect for me!

I'll be buying the 3-disc highlight set, but would have gladly sprung for two 3-disc sets, one from each year.

The 2 3CD box plan is a great idea! (Would solve the problem I was thinking about last night: shelve this set in my '73 shows or my '74 shows? Chose '74 as 2 discs are '74 dominated. File under things that keep me from going to bed at night.) Alas, some marketing directors at GDM/Rhino thought it wasn't a great idea. Probably because it would cut into the Box Set's sales speed. I don't think they feel too good about still having unsold copies of the 7/78 and 7/89 boxes in the store.

Punny2404 - oh gawd THAT GUY!...haha. I meant to root for more early Brent ('79-'85) releases. Maybe not a boxset (would be great too), but sprinkle more of them in the Dave's Picks releases. I feel like that era is very underrepresented. I'm "that guy" who whines for more 80's releases. I'm a new fan...3-4 years only and i got hooked on big time, and I hope that there are more releases from the early Brent era....will never be able to pay off my student loan or afford a house now.

I adapted the "song count" list posted on the main box thread (by Mustin21) to show some more data.Along the right I noted the songs on the compilation. Two things I noticed: Having done seperate 73 and 74 3CD comps would have pretty much meant making the only Dark Star in the box available outside the box. Right now DS completists HAVE TO buy the box. From a marketing perspective, a 73-only comp would therefore hurt the Box's sales. Having done seperate comps would have also meant including a lot of the new-for-74 songs on a comp. Note how none of them made this combination comp. One more disc would have been perfect. Disc 1 could have been a healthy sampling of the best first set songs from the 6 shows, laid out in a similar format to a typical first set of the time. Still, this looks like a great set, and will be more than satisfactory if the box sells out too quickly

I'm guessing he's suggesting that more early Brent shows ought to be released rather than suggesting that this box HAS early Brent shows. I agree too, I'd love to hear more shows from 1979! This 1973-74 box is another one I didn't see coming. I speculated / suggested that all three May 1973 shows ought to be released as this year's boxed set. Still don't have Des Moines '73 in great quality, but do have Goleta 05-20 and Kezar 05-26. Des Moines 1973 would make a GREAT Dave's Pick!

I just listened to “bird song” and “he’s gone” on this site and was compelled to buy the complete box set. Call me crazy but I loved how Keith played on the bird song and with Phil’s ending vocals on He’s Gone.

Hola! I've seen the song length for Playing in the Band (Disc 2 in the Best Of) listed as 46 minutes plus. Is that a typo or for Real!! It's listed as that time length too in the complete box set. Thanks Ya'll!

That's not a typo! It really is 46+ mins. Dave mentioned in the box video that it's the longest single song performance Dead ever did. I think he briefly mentioned this in one of the recent dave pick's video as well. I already bought the big box but this compilation looks too nice to pass up! Great compliment for DP 12 and RT 2.3

I'm not so sure Dave is correct about this Playin' being the longest Dead song ever. IIRC, one of the Europe '72 shows has a 51-minute Dark Star.

Dave did mention the Darkstar from E72, but said there was a drum solo in the middle of that song... Either way I can't wait till September...

That was a reference to Rotterdam 5-11-72. And no it doesn't reach the the 46 minutes of this PITB UNLESS you include the drums. According to Deadlists the two parts of Dark Star total 43:09. However if you add the four minute plus Drums that separate them it totals 47 plus minutes. I don't believe there was a longer Dark Star from Europe '72 or any other year. Although I'll be happy to be proven wrong.

Heaven knows how long it’ll take for my copy to reach the the uk so I bought myself a copy in iTunes last night . Fantastic sound and a great selection . Hard copy for the car and iTunes on the phones. Oh and I’ll have to cough up for import tax as well !! Cest la vie

After receiving the dead.net notification-to-expect-a-shipping-notification email, my impatience to receive the full set got the best of me and I sprang for the 3CD distillation down at the local Barnes & Noble. Well dang, y’all! If you’d just come right out and told us that the liner notes were uniquely created for this set alone, and that they were penned by the astute Jesse Jarnow, I never would have struggled with the decision! Necessary.

Received and redeemed my download code but am unable to download the entire 8gb file. It always fails with a "network error" at random points. I tried the download at least 8 times before the link expired. It's not my network issue, FYI :-)

Pre-ordered but never received the download after release date. I have written customer service but they have yet to respond. I also had problems with Cornell download. HDTracks, Acoustic Sounds, Nugs have fast efficient downloaders. I don't know how much it would cost to license such a downloader (I think made by JRiver), but perhaps Dead.net should look into it.

Really enjoying this. I could not spring for the whole set, but very glad I bought the 3CD Love the prime Phil BOR, and Jerry's howl in GDTRFB on the headlight line. I also really like the balance of audience presence on these discs, you can hear them, but by no means overpowering or distracting. They are still clear enough you can feel the love the pacific northwest had for the Boys on this tour. Great job to all! Wish I could afford the whole box set, but it was not in the cards.

I've got quite a few of the box sets and this one is by far the best one. The shows are incredible, showcasing the Dead at a very important point in their career musically,and the packaging is the coolest I've ever seen. Kudos to the designers and keep 'em coming!

Like I don't have enuf dead-btwn reams of CDs, Sirius dead channel, the internet archive -yadayada...and yet such a gas getting a new record. Just listened to CD1 of the 3 cd set. Stellar sound, grand performances-my favorite period of Deadness! (also coinciding with my 18 year old brain being ripped when this stuff was going on!)

A first for me in ordering CDs from GD. Third song, disc one (Bird Song) skips. I'd never had to return anything and the process is not "kind." Unable to talk to a human being. Need to send an email and wait for a response. Even then, I fear it will be additional charges for mailing back, reordering, etc. I hope this doesn't happen to you...

My disc also skips during Bird Song at about 13:30... how can I get a replacement disc? Clearly this is some sort of manufacturing defect. I would appreciate any help - thanks. Rock on.

They must have a bad batch. Disc 1, track 3 at 13:39 minutes I called the Dead.net toll free number but they told me they only handle orders PERIOD. What the heck happened to Dead.net's toll-free number handling orders, returns, etc.? Did you change order fulfillment centers? I was told I had to email their warehouse who would send me a new set ONCE I returned the CD. What the heck happened to Dead.net just mailing out a replacement disc for the damaged disc rather than needing the damaged item returned and THEN they would mail out a replacement? You guys used to do this - you did it for one of my Dave's Picks, the 80-CD box and the Red Rocks box that had just one defective disc. Just talking to the Dead.net's toll-free number has p**sed me off for the rest of the day. Here's the nice email I received when I sent an email, so much for them fixing the problem in a timely fashion: Thank you for contacting Dead.net customer service. Our customer service team will reply to your email as soon as possible. Due to our current email volume, replies may take up to 2 business days. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

Just listened to the first disc. My feeling is that this "best of" set has 3/4s of what I want from "The Complete Recordings" at 1/10 the price (bought from Amazon for $19). Disc One certainly supports my feeling! On evaluating the personal feasibility of avoiding the 19 Disc box, I remembered that the 5/19/74 ChinaRider and Truckin -> GDTRFB were dealbreakers. 5/19/74 was the only show I had a copy of, so i don't know what I missing from the other five showa. Anyway the right 5/19/74 material made it onto the 3 Disc set, so I bought it. And the 5/19/74 tracks ARE wonderful. Read enough about the 6/22/73 Bird Song to figure it is one of the gems of the big box. And here it is, shining brightly. I don't enjoy Box Of Rain, but it provides the set's title... Do wish there was a Scarlet instead of Brown-Eyed, but this BEW is very nice and the early Scarlets were rather stiff... Really looking forward to the 46 minute PITB and the 6/26/73 T>O1>etc! Judging by Disc One, the other two discs will be fantastic! Would've liked a fourth disc with the Dark Star and a Weather Report Suite, but this 3 disc compilation really covers most of the bases for my tastes. Did experience the Bird song 13:39 flaw. My player got past it but I did get a bit jarred. My Computer system was able to load the track without the flaw. I'll live.

(Follow up to my earlier post) Despite two unanswered e-mails and one phone call, I have still not received the download or an explanation, other than the somewhat hard to understand person on the phone, who eventually said there was a problem with "digital," but no further information. To close the conversation she said, "Do you prefer 'Mr. Charlie' or 'Sugar Magnolia'." Obviously a scripted question, and I was not pleased as I want the download, not to answer a survey. I have never in my life disputed a credit card transaction, but If I don't hear anything by the middle of this week that is exactly what I'm going to do.

Another follow-up: After contacting them by phone and getting nowhere with "Rhino Lack of Customer Service" since their toll-free number ONLY takes orders. They told me to send an email so I sent an email to Rhino/Dead on Friday and they sent me back a form letter today (Tuesday) to fill out - due to unexpected high volume (probably everyone with defective Disc 1's on track 3). I wasn't very happy. Hopefully between returning the form "Rhino Lack of Customer Service" sent me and contacting Marye via PM I will get a replacement disc - but it sounds like the replacements have the same problem. You think Rhino would go back to press a couple hundred Disc 1's that actually works but I doubt they'd do that since it's too logical. PS - I got the same stupid question at the end of every phone call (I called them 3 times) asking me which song I liked better so they could add to their playlist. Just FIX my problem rather than worrying about your stupid playlist.

After 12 days from date of release (I had pre-ordered), customer service sent me an email that they were sending me a new link to the download (which arrived simultaneously). It did not contain a link! At the bottom I clicked on "view order status" with the hope that the link would be in my orders. What did the link take me to? A Warner Music page that said "Kiss My Country Ass". I'm not kidding. I no longer wish to shop on dead.net and will get my money back and buy the download on acoustic sounds, even though it is $6.50 more. At least they know how to serve digital music customers. Yep. Ten days since I reported my "Bird Song" skipped (via email) because you can't talk to a human being if you've encounter a problem. I've been promised a replacement disc last Saturday. I, like many others on this site, remember going to the post office and getting postal money orders to send away for tickets to shows back in the day. "Deadheads Unite" as it said on the back of SkullF*ck. Made friends with Ruby in Deadhead central. Great memories of top notch customer service. Where have all the flowers gone?

Re: My non-receipt of the download. I disputed on PayPal and lo and behold customer service responds in less than 24 hours refunding my money. As I stated I will now be buying any Grateful Dead downloads on other sites like HDtracks, Acoustic Sounds, or Nugs, even if the cost is a bit more. They all have download software that works well and is user friendly. Of course that advice doesn't apply to CD customers for CDs available in limited quantities exclusively on Dead.net, which become enormously expensive when they hit the secondary market. (Oh, if stuff like Dave's picks were widely available as downloads, that would be happy day.) Like the comment below I wish customer service would get its act together. I will still visit Dead.net for news and such.

I got a replacement disc today - thanks Marye for trying - and it SKIPS in the SAME place as the other one - disc 1 track 3 around 13:39 mark. I still think it's time Rhino go back to press and make a whole new batch of Disc 1's - and while I'm at here wishful thinking that - Rhino/WBM actually fulfill the download orders. I miss the early 70's when you had to use the mail - USPS not email - to communicate with Dead.net since calling them was too darn expensive and besides we had a party line with 3 other families. ** On another note - I was successful burning Disc 1 to MP3 and then I burned the MP3 back to a CD. - no skipping on track 3 around 13:39 mark. I just wish Rhino could actually get their act together.

I really like this release. It reminds me a bit of a Road Trips release, whereas we are getting three CD's. My only wish is if it had the Dark Star instead of two Truckin's though those Truckin' jams are incredible. I see many complaints about a skip in Bird Song, mine has a skipping or sharp popping sounds but the CD played right through it. Weird how it happened on so many peoples copy. I did not want to spend the $200+ on the gargantuan box and despite that decision I still will consider this 3-CD release the best of the year. Classic GD and every song is a a treasure, even though The HCS has a few Jerry vocal flubs, the jam is incredible.

I have the boxset, love the boxset and love getting the Physical product from Dead.net. But I would love to listen to a High Resolution FLAC to compare it to the physical CD to see if there is sonic superiority or not. I am in the process of building a new PC with the capability to play High Res thru it, so I am looking to possibly pick this up to compare. I know this thread is 2 years dead, but wanted to know if anyone who had purchased the compilation can confirm if it is 192/24 and if it is worth the additional purchase. I was hoping the Saint of Circumstance digital download would've been 192/24 since it was originally recorded on a 48 track mixing board - definitely opportunity lost imho by the powers that be, but since I have not listened to any thus far, I don't know if there would be a difference...
