"We were in the Pacific Northwest...between somewhere in Washington and some other where in Oregon. The road took us to the lip on a ridge, from where we could see around us for many miles in all directions … It was breathtaking to behold, but as we watched, we had a firm realization that we were witnessing something even more beautiful than our eyes could ever take in … Life causes life. Heaven and Earth dance in this way endlessly, and their child is the forest. And so there we were, epiphanously watching that grandest and most glorious dance of life—of which we are just a tiny part—awed by a magnificence without beginning, without end..."

Bob Weir, “Sell Headwaters—Everyone Wins,” San Francisco Chronicle

The Pacific Northwest offers up a rich feast of land, sky, and water. It is ripe with influences, abundant with symbols, deep and spirited. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that the Grateful Dead played some of their most inspired shows on these fertile grounds. It does, however, sometimes take a breath for the elements to re-align years later. It seems for us, they finally have and we are able to present not just a glimpse of the band's extraordinary exploratory tour through the region, but a two-tour bounty as the PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS.

For PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS, we've paired two short runs made up of six previously unreleased shows - P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C. (6/22/73); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (6/24/73); Seattle Center Arena, Seattle, WA (6/26/73); P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, Canada (5/17/74); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (5/19/74); and Hec Edmundson Pavilion, University of Washington, Seattle, WA (5/21/74). Each show has been mastered in HDCD from the original master tapes by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. The transfers from the masters were transferred and restored by Plangent Processes, further ensuring that this is the best, most authentic that these shows have ever sounded.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS comes in an ornate box created by Canada’s preeminent First Nations artist Roy Henry Vickers (more on this tremendous artist soon). To complement the music, the set also includes a 64-page book with an in-depth essay by Grateful Dead scholar Nicholas G. Meriwether and photos by Richie Pechner.

Due September 7th, this release is limited to 15,000 individually numbered copies and available exclusively from dead.net. You'll want to grab a copy while you can and sit back, relax, and enjoy all the exclusive content we'll be rolling out over the next few weeks.

Looking for something a little more byte-sized? The collection will also be available for HD digital download in FLAC and ALAC, exclusively at dead.net, on release day. You can pre-order it now too.

Get it while you can.

Hippychic, I know that you are WAY too cool to let comments from a neanderthal bother you. And I know you have a lot of supporters(like me). So keep speaking your truth.Perhaps LedDed needs to change his name to BrainDed. Let's keep it peaceful everybody. I'm sure Jerry would want it to be that way.

....One spy is French, one is German and the other is Italian. Their captors come into the cell and grab the French spy and tie his hands behind a chair in the next room. They torture him for 2 hours before he answers all questions and gives up all of his secrets. The captors throw the French spy back into the cell and grab the German spy. They tie his hands behind the chair as well and torture him for 4 hours before he tells them what they want to know. They throw him back into the cell and grab the Italian spy. They tie his hands behind the chair and begin torturing. 4 hours go by and the spy isn't talking. Then 8 hours, then 16 and after 24 hours they give up and throw him back into the cell. The German and French spy are impressed and ask him how he managed to not talk. The Italian spy responds, " I wanted to!, but I couldn't move my hands!". I'm ok with pit hair, fwiw.

please, lets stop using the term "pit hair". I have no problem with female pit hair, but the term "pit hair"- well it sounds judgmental, derogatory. How about "underarm hair"? And what does it have to do with PacWest 73-74? Oh that's right, we are all a bunch of Deadheads here :)

Am I the only one who wishes the focus on these threads remained on the release in question? Getting to be a bummer around here. If this forum starts getting too troll-y, spam-y, political, or sexist, I'm gone. Dead.net is one of my few refuges from that nonsense. Isn't there a catch-all forum here for reminiscences, infighting, jokes, discussion of other bands, etc? It gets exhausting scrolling through looking for information about, you know, the PNW box set and reading about everything but.

jimmyjack, I think you may be the odd man out here. If these threads were restricted to their topics, they would be very boring and would dry up quickly. Really, what is there to say about the Pac/NW 73-74 announcement? Most of us here are Deadheads, most are stoked about the set. These threads are mostly just a space where Deadheads can shoot the shit about any topic under the sun. Myself, I kind of dig it that way.

I agree with Gollum, these threads would dry up pretty quick if it were limited to discussion of the release in question. It is the random nature of the topics that come up that make it an interesting read and there are a number of cool things I have picked up due to someone's random reference to a book I haven't read or an album I haven't heard before. While I don't dig the political and religious debates, that is really a function of the disrespect and antagonism that immediately arises on those topics, as I love discussing politics and religion in the real world. I routinely see things posted that I don't dig or that I disagree with, but I generally try to follow Thumper's rule - if I don't have anything nice to say, I don't say anything at all. (Of course sometimes the impulse to respond to obnoxiousness with more obnoxiousness gets the better of all of us, but based on my observed ability to cause apoplectic rage in those who choose to take the disrespectful and antagonistic approach when they argue with me here in the real world, I figured you guys would just as soon skip it. As far as this PNW box, I will say that I am curious to hear that long (26 minute) Truckin in the He's Gone - Truckin - Other One sequence from the 6/22/73 show.

I agree with Gollum, too. Somebody on the other board enlightened me as to who Bruce Cockburn was today-and posted a clip of him playing some amazing guitar. This forum at its best! The flip side is if someone uses this forum to make fun of someone else by sexism-or any other form of bullying. People who do that are..full of shit basically. Its good if someone sticks to their guns sometimes-but not if that means they just become entrenched in ignorance.

He's not saying he won't take back that one comment to Hippychic. He is saying he would never take back anything he's said to anyone on this message board. Led Ded thinks to do so would project weakness, and he despises feeling weak. Why? Because some weakness he has or had brought him a great deal of pain and humiliation in his past. He bullies people to cope with it, and he avoids social behaviors he associates with weakness, such as apologizing. This is why children bully. Sad really. Someone needs to hug Led Ded and tell him it's not his fault.

You can probably get what you are looking for at the hoffman forums. I have no problem with Deadheads discussing things they enjoy, are interested in, or want to know more about. The stories people have of past adventures are great. I don’t recall there ever being a rule at Dead shows while in the parking lot, sitting in your seat waiting for the show to start or during intermission, or standing in line for the bathroom that you weren’t allowed to discuss anything but GD.

these Grateful Dead shows and the box set being offered. I posted my recollection of my first Dead show in 1974 because I believed some would find it informative, a little 'time trip' (if you will) to give this group a 'taste' of what that era of the Dead was like playing live in a concert (not only on a CD or download format). Seems like some here do enjoy a tale about a show or era they might not have been able to attend? If you are uninterested in such excursions (or some of the other 'alternate' topics) my advice would be to simply skip onto the next post to see if it contains something you like. This is a smorgasbord. Or recall the line from Box of Rain 'believe it if you need if you don't just pass it on." This site has been free-form and self policing (for the most part). On rare occasion Marye will delete the spammers or admonish those way out of line (making threats, etc.). I enjoy a story or two or someone's scatting to a different topic, and appreciate being introduced to different music (Cowboy Junkies, etc). Yes sometimes we wander to topics where reactions result (politics, religion, etc.) but usually this group is able to return to what brought all us here in the first place, the Grateful Dead. Things sometimes get hairy (pun intended) when people take themselves too seriously. This 'fatal flaw' available in a universal/generic fit. You know, one size fits all. I wore out my umbrage on my last fatal flaw, so I better re-order to get current. I would add that sometimes things (or people) aren't what they appear or present. Interpret that as you will. "It ain't what I don't know that gets me into trouble, it's what I know for sure, that ain't so." Mark Twain.

Great call on The Other One => Me and My Uncle => The Other One from 8/6/71. I had no recollection of this medley. F****** fantastic thank you. I put together a playlist of the 8/6 songs from Dick's Picks and the road trips summer 71 bonus disc. It's almost the whole show. Some of the material from those houseboat tapes de Stewart's a little bit, but not this Palladium show. The Cumberland Blues also cooks.

Two other great versions of songs played on 6/8/71 are Mr Charlie-one of the few songs that sounded better in 1971 than 1972, and - especially - Hard To Handle. Both songs are duplicated the following night to similar effect. It was a raw, funky sound that peaked during Summer 1971, and wasn't really developed after Keith joined. But it ws great while it lasted.

I do recall that Kate Dear pulled a Kramer on me and said they were HER STORIES NOW!! Anyway, I got stories, I got pics. If you're a sucker for punishment, I'll tell a few tales of Summer '73. But not unless several people demand it!

Yeah I've been into that hard to handle for a while. I've always kind of preferred the following night, just because of that little Phil Escapade that goes on. But they are both great no doubt. A lot of people point to the ladies and gentlemen Hard to Handle as well, but I haven't had time to revisit that one lately so it's on my to-do list. The mr. Charlie on 8/6 was so good I'm laughing out loud as I write this. I often wonder the extent to which Norman production Aesthetics separate some of the Europe 72 songs from to track recordings in late 71 and late 72. The two tracks always seem a little more edgy to me whereas the multi-tracks seem more polished. When I heard that 8 6 mr. Charlie on the car ride into work today, I gained a whole new respect for it. Not passing judgement on mr. Norman, he's awesome, just saying the two tracks have an Ambiance of Their Own. I hate this f****** Google translator s***. Makes all these typos capital letters where they don't belong sorry. Anyway just wanted to TuneIn Dave Rock and let you know you're right about 8/6 /71 mr. Charlie it rules

I keep going back to this box - superb. Especially the 1974 shows. I went so far as to get 5/19/74 and the Playing in the Band from 5/21/74 on vinyl. There are a few problems with vocals on both, but this matters not a jot. The playing, as you say, from all band members, is absorbing. After 1970 they only needed Bill on drums.

I also agree with icecrmcnkd - a box of October 1974 with bells and whistles would make a great release.

Late to the party, but ...

... just wanted to share how delighted I am with the music in this set, and encourage anyone who’s not taken the plunge to just go ahead and get it already.

There’s been some chatter in another thread about how long it’s taking to sell out this box, and all I can say is that, as much as I love ’73 and ’74, I didn’t order mine till Rhino put it on sale. Maybe some people are settling for the 3-disc version, which is understandable, given the difference in price and given that they did manage to include some very high highlights (including the 45 minute PITB!) in that set.

Also causing some hesitation for me was the packaging. Don’t get me wrong: it’s beautiful! The art work is amazing. But speaking as someone who already has problems finding shelf space for my CDs, I wasn’t sure where I’d put this giant box. (In case anybody upstairs is listening: I thought the June 1976 box really hit the sweet spot between packaging that was elaborate enough to make the box feel special but also small enough to not cause problems.)

Anyway, the music. The MUSIC. For me, this era was flat out the best the band ever sounded, and it’s an incredible joy to hear them in such fine audio. There are a few “surprises,” the kind of vocal drop outs and oddities in the mix that would’ve rated a “caveat” back in the Dick’s days. Mostly, these are very temporary, and in all cases the sound is really really good once everybody settles in. As usual, Jerry’s louder than Bob, but you can hear them both very distinctly, and they constantly (constantly!) are playing their asses off. Phil’s on fire throughout. And BK? He makes a solid case here that the Dead never needed another drummer. Keith comes through nicely, and plays well. I suppose we could say that the vocals were erratic during this period, and I would admit that’s true here. But the singing is mostly good to great, and man oh man, the band sounds fantastic!

I’ve only listened to each show once so far—given the complaints about missing discs and whatnot, I felt like I should make a point of listening all the way through to make sure nothing was amiss—so I’m not really ready to call out a favorite show, or even favorite tunes. But I will say that the PITBs, the Bird Songs, the Eyes, the China-Riders are all, for me, as good as they get. Their playing was so spontaneous, so open, so powerful, so much soul, so imperfectly perfect.

Yes, I suppose there are other, equally worthy eras. But man, ’73 and ’74 were beautiful.

Testing with Lossless Audio Checker shows the June 1976 FLAC download in 24/192 format ( https://store.dead.net/music/digital/june-1976-flac-192-24-1.html ) and the Pacific Northwest '73-'74- The Complete Recordings FLAC download in 24/192 ( https://store.dead.net/music/boxed-sets/pacific-northwest-73-74-the-com… ) to be "Upsampled." I have notified Jeffrey Norman and Rhino. I sent Jeffrey the logs of the LAC test results showing 80% of the June 76 files being upsampled. While he was very nice in his response, he had no explanation for the finding. Rhino has not responded to any e-mails. It is important to note that the files on both test “Clean” after downsampling to 24/96, which, likely, means the files, were originally digitized at 24/96 or digitized at 24/192 and downsampled to 24/96 for mastering. Whatever the case Rhino needs to disclose this fact on their web site or change the files for sale to 24/96.
