Bolo24 says: An Idea, Perhaps? Since we're all going to have a fair amount of spare time on our hands for the foreseeable future, what about starting another thread where we all listen to the same show/release on a given day and then share impressions afterward? Folks can submit suggestions and one person (not me) picks what we'll all listen to - call it Deadnet Picks or something. Anyway, if this idea is deemed to have merit, I'd suggest one of the loyal regular posters take the lead and do the picking - y'all can decide who. Might be fun. If it does go forward, I nominate Dick's Picks 18 for the first listen. Been talked about here lately, and, had it been a single show rather than a compilation, we'd probably be talking about it in the same conversation as Cornell, Veneta, etc. Or perhaps even Gainesville?? Stay safe and healthy, friends - this planet needs as many Deadheads as possible.

While we wait, how about 4/11/78 from the FOTD Box set? This one is still available. Hard to believe.

If you scroll way, way back in the thread.. he was on a roll. I think they must have disabled his account because he had become such a threat to Lemieux. So many good picks, so little time.

ah.. tasty shows they were.

Edit: 4/11/78 it is. I think that was one of HarperScotts first picks.

Edit2: I am going to feel really shitty if this 'person' is not a bot and turns out to be a nice guy.

HarperScott LSD was amazing, better than Owlsley's

I think this is the best show of the tour, for both overall performance and sound. I have a great fondness for Pembroke Pines and Tuscaloosa, along with the last two Palladium shows - but Baltimore wins out in the end ...

Also > necessary to kick a thread 'forward' to combat Sir Spamalot (cbd ads) burying everything thus afternoon. Thanks MaryE, in advance, for removing the offender.

I never had it on cassette so the show is not burned into my synapses.
Eventually got it on torrent but must have not listened to it many times.
Last night’s listen was grate and I realized that I need to start burning this show into my synapses.

Although once Boxilla 2.0 arrives I expect to be busy for a while.

Yes, great show. I can't remember the last time I listened to it. Love the Sugarees from this show and Hartford. I think Jerry stretched these out into the Winterland shows as well. I can appreciate your thoughts on this one Strat. Always hard for me to pick the best May show. Are there any subpar ones? I don't think so.

Hey and you were there Mkav. Pretty cool man. Do you remember Bob's banter in the beginning of the show claiming there weren't many people there yet?

Thanks for the pick Conekid.

Both great shows, both spectacular recordings. I kinda think Dave was holding this in his front pocket after the success of DaP1 for a rainy day when sales were not so sublime.

I think he might have waited too long as it did not seem to pick up demand as one might have expected.

These shows are of similar caliber, performance, and sound quality. They are both great as is To Terrapin. Perhaps the best of the tour, perhaps not.. but after a while are we not splitting hairs?

Worthy.

Hey rockers!!

Just got back from a fabulous ride on the Thruxton, reminded me of the past, and where I was 40 years ago today..................

June 27, 1985. Beautiful day. Rode out to Saratoga Springs on the bike. Lawn ticket. A few doobies. The only show I ever attended solo..................

Midnight Hour opener. A first set Crazy Fingers. The very interesting Stranger/Eyes to open the second set. A two song encore. Those were the days!!

And then, of course, there was the next day...............

I have realized that the past and future are real illusions, that they exist in the present, which is what there is and all there is......

Definitely going to check this show out tomorrow I hope. Been super busy with work this month and need to get caught up with some good shows.

06.30.85 Merriweather Post w/ killer Shakedown to open the 2nd set - and Pretty Dang Dang Hot from there on ...

Unique, kinda oddball 1/2 Step followed by CC Rider to open - was pulled back slightly by having no Franklin's in there. [Edit: this particular combo is not perfectly unique - but close - as there was just one other, on 4/7 at Philly Spectrum, without the little segue though]

I was fortunate to see a different (to open the 2nd set) better combo of this type 1/2 Step > I Know You Rider (!!) in November (at NJ Byrne Arena) ... Also Keep on Growin' in this first set, which was kind of mind-blowing at the time.

Joyful Memories : )

We were there in full force. I really get the feeling this show will make the cutoff very soon. I could easily see it being a Dave's Pick. It helps that Mr. Norman is beginning to find his footing working with these cassette (or PCM?) masters.

I kind of like the 84 Merriweathers too. Kinda raw and kinda ragged, but had some high energy moments. A two show stop with a relaxed camping scene, once you showed up you never had to leave.. The second night is better but they opened the first night with Casey Jones and the train jumped off the tracks right then never to return to normal. The fireman screams and the engine just gleams.

I guess 6/30/85 is the best of the bunch. Fun times.

It's hard to ignore the Alpine 89 run this time of the year. I am listening to 7/19 now.

Summer '89 really marked the beginning of a cohesive period in their playing that rolled into 1990 and this run of shows are as good as it gets in this era.

I missed this run, too bad for me. I really think they are going to box set this run and perhaps a few adjacent or a greater box including shows from other years at this venue. I'd love to see a mini box with CD's and Video of all three nights, it doesn't matter that I have Downhill From Here.

How about an upbeat 9/18/87 MSG from 30 trips.

I can hear Jerry whispering to himself, I'm going to send it on this one.

Some inspiring playing and a shoutout to my friend Dave who got to see Los Lobos last night in Pittsburgh. Short show but a nice La Bamba at the end. Said they looked strong and healthy. I think 9/18 had one of three La Bamba's or something like that.

On a similar note, a couple days earlier again at MSG the 9/16 show (released as part of Enjoying the Ride) had an inspired opener. I'm not a super huge touch of grey person, but I do like it. If you take a ride on the time travelling John Deere and set the dials for 1987, people on the East Coast were more than pumped to see Jerry come back from his coma and play with some seriously great energy. You can hear people losing their shit in the audience when they transition from I will get by to We Will Get By, then a first set stand-alone Scarlet set them into a frenzy. I got goosebumps that first listen as it brought me back in time and I relived memories. I was not there, but you can tell the place was crackling with energy. I will take that jolt of positive energy anytime, anyplace, anywhere. Go Jerry go.

Hey Jim that was a great run. Shorter shows for the time but great. Very excited time to be fan and it seems like a lifetime ago, but that is probably because it was. Still miss Jerry and the list is growing.

Pick to follow.

WelI I guess Dave picked the right selections for the 55 filler, lol. Maybe not a focused listen today but 55 seemed a better show for sure. Vince's calliope sound was tolerable but his singing seemed a bit shouty and maybe sharp? The highlights were the Bruce Jam, which was very Keith Jarrett-y, into Valley Road and The Weight encore. The Lovelight gets an honorable mention as well. Tried the 12-9-90 Valley Road thinking it may have been better in my memory but they were a tie, as they were almost identical. In person show memories are like that sometimes. Always better in hindsight, lol.
Garcia rips it up on that Bruce & The Range song Across The River. Knew it was Jerry the 1st time I ever heard it. Unmistakable. Always made my day when it came on the Muzak at work! Why in gods name didn't they ever do that one with the GD? The video I just saw shines even brighter than the studio cut.

Same thing for me - three notes up the scale and four couplets down with 'that sound' - Unmistakable.

I personally think that's Bruce's all time best song (i.e. my favorite), and not just because of what Jerry brings to it. So, yes. I also wish they had done that one ...

On the bluecrow woulda/coulda/shoulda list. I was in town for this run and somehow not on my radar. Smoking show - Set II was a favorite tape bitd. I'd go with the audience front row balcony sources - sbd sounds not muy bueno. Weir breaks out the first Little Red Rooster since '65 (per DB IX) in the city of Chess Records to open Set II - the hometown crowd was diggin it! - and then bam they are flying into a freaking fantastic China Cat > Rider. I swear you can feel the balcony rocking! Out of Space into Playing > Comes A Time > Playing.

Hey Jim - the new 50 States of the Dead shirt in store is Maryland!! It looks way cool!!

Thanks for joining in Firstshow.

I was looking at these London shows on Relisten after I finished #55. Pulled up 10/30/90 and didn't realize until later that the show was labeled incorrectly as 10/30, was actually 10/31. Anyway, 10/31 is definitely worth a listen. Really good show. For me, it takes a while to get used to Vince on the keys. Very different sound than Brent. I was thinking how did they end up with Vince after Brent passed? Played with the Tubes. Seemed like a strange connection.

I will have to check out that August Uptown Theater 80 show this weekend.

Be well out there.

If I recall correctly from what I read years ago, possibly in DDN, Bruce was asked to join but didn’t want the job. But he was willing to be temporary while a new person learned the ropes. Bruce had been to Dead shows in the early 80’s, maybe 70’s, and played in a Dead cover band in college, and knew the ropes.
I also read years ago in a Bruce interview when he was asked why he turned down the job he said he didn’t want to be in the hot seat (all previous keyboard players were deceased).

The Tubes were from San Fran and apparently Vince interviewed and got the job.

Europe ‘90
I had one of the Berlin shows on cassette and recall it being pretty good.
Haven’t listened to that show in years. Will check it out this fall after I’ve become saturated with the ETR Box.

Interesting Conekid. I do like the Bruce Vince combo in recordings. Just took me a while to get used to.

Still have a few Oberon tall boys in the fridge and then we move to Octoberfest season.

Needed some 78 this morning and pulled up this show as I rip the 5/13/78 show.

Missing Jerry's lyrics on the first couple of tunes recovers quickly and the rest of the show is a rocker and sound quality still blows me away.

Duly goaded, but lacking much original to contribute, I unashamedly and proudly quote from our esteemed resident PhD of 1971, F-Doc-11. Years ago he shared soundboards from what he calls the "Cortland-Providence-Bangor hat trick" (April 18, 21 & 22) and shared the following words:

4/18: "a perfect example of “the sledgehammer approach”---loud, fast, bone-crunching rock’n’roll (as the Dead rarely played it), very edgy, skip-the-subtlety, fasten-yer seatbelts & go directly to “pulverize”. Almost everything is a highlight. . . "

4/21: "A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, there was RIA on 4/21/71. The force was with them. Or was it something in the water? Similar in tone to its hard rocking predecessor Cortland, but with “expanded content”, this is an underappreciated, quasi-classic that actually doesn’t get talked about a lot outside of “1971 aficionado circles”. Things get nicely weird early. . ."

4/22: "w/out doubt, one of my great Grateful Dead guilty pleasures… I love it for the homey, down east vibe, the palpable closeness of the band to the audience, the stage chatter (“Don’t tune Garcia up he sings horrible”, lost car keys, & somebody needs a ride back to Boston), & of course the music, the loosey-goosey psychedelic-meets-Bakersfield that only the Dead could come up with. . ."

Guess I still flunk Oro's challenge, but maybe he'll take pity and award a modicum of extra credit for my research project-ette.

Happy Christmas Eve everybody. And here's hoping for a tsunami of sanity in 2026. Just give us some truth. . . Onward

Bluecrow, definitely not an expert but yes, a huge fan. The Stanley Theater shows are great and the Nassau shows are as good or better. Favorite is still 11/5 and to have it from Norman is a huge plus. Great era. Jerry was really stretching it out during this period.
