Bolo24 says: An Idea, Perhaps? Since we're all going to have a fair amount of spare time on our hands for the foreseeable future, what about starting another thread where we all listen to the same show/release on a given day and then share impressions afterward? Folks can submit suggestions and one person (not me) picks what we'll all listen to - call it Deadnet Picks or something. Anyway, if this idea is deemed to have merit, I'd suggest one of the loyal regular posters take the lead and do the picking - y'all can decide who. Might be fun. If it does go forward, I nominate Dick's Picks 18 for the first listen. Been talked about here lately, and, had it been a single show rather than a compilation, we'd probably be talking about it in the same conversation as Cornell, Veneta, etc. Or perhaps even Gainesville?? Stay safe and healthy, friends - this planet needs as many Deadheads as possible.

I came to give a pick, 9-25-91.
It’s the anniversary, no less.
Must be why I picked it.

Need more Fall ‘91, Dave.

Dicks Picks 20 is always worth a listen. two shows - 9/25 & 28/76.
But I'm not actually listening to that myself. Instead Dicks 36 is getting another airing. Great show from 9/21/72 with a couple of sides from 9/3/72 thrown in as filler. I have this on vinyl, and there is something about this format that slows down my listening. So with 7 L.P.s in the box I may be gone some time...

Yes, a good one. Played that a lot at the time when it came out.
Was happy to get a ‘76 DP, but disappointed that it wasn’t one of my favorite shows (due to having them on cassette) 6-14, 6-29, 10-9.
But now have 2 of those, CD and vinyl.
The June ‘76 Box is still awesome! Remember when that arrived during Covid shutdown? Same period as when this page started.

Dave, time for the June ‘76 TOO Box.
Oh, that’s your pick for 2026, the 50th anniversary?
Excellent choice.

Nice Conekid!
We saw the boys a few times in April 89, in Milwaukee and in Bloomington at the old Met Center. Great year.
Dick's 17, from 91. I am in. Can't remember the last time I listened to this show.
Need to keep the music going.

Oh and 5/17/74, what a show! What will be the next 74 show they release?

Minneapolis October 19 1971

Surprisingly strong given the fact that the Dead hadn’t played a live show since late August, there was a new member of the band, AND six new songs premiered. Five of the new songs appeared in the fine 15 song first set. Here, as with many other shows in October through December 1971, the real gold to be mined is in the second set. A rippin’ Truckin’ opens, followed by a very strong Cryptical/Other One suite, the Uncle John’s is great, and as was often the case a strong NFA/GDTRFB/NFA suite wraps it all up quite nicely. While Pigpen would return in December, this show---along with many others from those months----gave us great insights into what live Dead could and would be like without Pigpen. And while I am a huge (and unapologetic) Pigpen fan, shows like these proved that going forward, the Dead could still be great!

Might even make a decent official release some day............

Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning......

Rock on!

I'm in.
Thanks for that.

And its got a Cumberland!
Been focusing on how well all 6 of the firsts were played. And obviously Keith's new contributions as well. His work on TOO is worth the visit. The Jack Straw was a little anemic but loved all the other 1sts.
This was a fun romp. Thanks Doc

Good morning rockers and happy Monday!!!

This one's for Angry Jack Straw. He knows why. Carrier Dome October 20 1984.

Great way to cap off a fine tour, we caught seven shows including the fun Centrum shows and the mythical second Augusta. Up the hill, liquid 25 courtesy of DeadHeadFred, the cavernous Dome, and yes a jammy good time was had by all. Decent soundboards are out there so check it out!

gotta hear that album again soon

even though track 2 on side two has a Jeffrey Epstein vibe

as does Good Morning Little Schoolgirl (never one of my favorite GD tracks anyway.)

Proudfoot -That was my first proper album, which I got for Christmas in 1971. I didn't know what you meant concerning the lyrics for Planet Queen, so I've just had a look. I see what you mean...amazing what was considered acceptable back in 1971. I don't think anyone would have noticed anything wrong with that back in the day. But now..

As for Good Morning Little Schoolgirl....it's hard to imagine a song being quite as wrong as that. It was really popular among blues rock bands of the 60's and 70's too. True what they say about the past being another country.

Morning rockers!!

This thread appears dead, let's bring it back to life....................

Houston, Texas November 19 1972

One of the first Fall 72 shows I ever had. Some jammy goodness in the first set.A Box Of Rain. Rare Tomorrow Is Forever. Always loved the Dark Star/WRS prelude/Half Step. Really strong show, think I'll listen on my morning commute.....

When will the Texas 72 box set be released? HendrixFreak wants to know.......

Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp, Or what's a heaven for?

Hey rockers!!!

This being December 2, we should all be listening to the fine Boston Music Hall show of December 2 1971. I think I'll do that right now!!! See ya there!!!

As I recall, there's some odd things about this show, and yes we discussed all that LAST year lol....

As one of many regular lurkers hereabouts, hopefully, maybe, possibly, perchance this thread ain't dead yet. Thanks for your recent rekindling efforts Forensicdoceleven. Maybe Oro will, sooner than later, end his boycott – that'd help. The format may be funky, but the banter is clean. . . Onward?

Or, careful what ya wish for ; )

5/14/78 JG just rips!

So in case your the one person out there that doesn’t know it, I listen to A LOT of Dead.
All kinds, usually by the tour or even concerted efforts to do whole years.
My quest has become to hit em all…for good or for I’ll…
Just sorta serendipitously started here on POTD during the vid when many had nothing better to do lol
It became apparent that my obsession/project was not conducive to a group of folks attempting to coalesce around one particular show, at the same time things were beginning to “normalize” (ahem, that’s debatable), So participation dwindled, especially when our awesome friend GOGD stopped hanging : (
Fortunately, Loyal diehards like DV and BC have tried to carry the torch, and Doctor Death has tried to keep it alive with his organized campaign of favorites etc.
But it was obvious that my methods were not appropriate for this board.

So I’ve been going native and quietly but diligently continuing onward, through the fog!
Part of that has been a more slow, thoughtful digestion of the ETR box instead of the more normal approach of just gobbling it up, then back to my quest.
But since the 60th seemed like kinda a big deal to me at least, not just another reason to buy shit, I figured I would make each show count by including other picks from that year to get reacquainted, and compare and compliment the box choice. Sometimes I tied the box choice into the flow of my quest i.e., second half of 72, where I started at 6/17/72 and listened in order to probably 98% of everything through the rest of the year, including most but not a couple of repeats.
I also took a couple weeks and went hard on 1975 with the BFA anny etc.
I listened to each ETR box show at least twice (some more) and usually via a sit down deep dive. This approach has been thoroughly rewarding and enjoyable, though I’m only a little past half…so far!
My latest was the 5/13/78 show, which I’d heard once and liked, but didn’t find it RJ.
I’ve also been fortunate this past year or so to pick up some “real” copies of some shows I had copies from some very fine folks here, but it’s always fun to get the real deal for the collection etc. So I figured Id play the actual discs to ensure they were trouble free as part of my treatment of the 78 show.
So I started with Dicks 18, then Dave’s 15 and 7, back to Dicks 25, followed by the ETR 5/13 show, and the 5/14,( my pick today, from Boxilla). I’ve also started on the July box and am currently on 7/5. Next I’ll skip RR, and move to December 78 to hit the last 8 or 10 shows I’ve not yet heard from this year.
So why 5/14? Well, I finally dug into DP 25 a bit as I’d not fully before, and it is apparent like Dave mentions in the liners for 15? I think, that something changed after the end of that spring run. Perhaps not drastic, perhaps nuanced enough causal listening won’t illuminate it?
But the rest of the year seems to progressively get a little more dangerous, less buttery smooth 77 super model? Exciting, only those who go over the edge know where it lies to butcher HST.
Personally, I’ve always liked the not so perfect, dangerous, occasionally off the rails Dead, but that’s just a personal preference, as I like all eras etc. But primal, 78, and 85 hold a extra special sentiment for me.
So the run after spring is good, but different, with good consistency if not RJ status, though I noted 5/8 stood out a bit. The May run seems to eventually rise above this perfectly fine plateau. starting to peak with the DP 25 shows, continuing slightly upward with the ETR show which I enjoyed much more with a proper listen and in my new listening room, finally dialed in after several months.
But I found the peak of the May run to be the Boxilla 5/14/78 show!
Thought I’d heard it at least superficially once (still not sure I’ve “heard” all of Boxilla yet lol)
But maybe I hadn’t as I had no notes and boy howdy did this one sit my up and slap me silly!
Set and setting or…?
Ya know, sometimes ya get shown the light. Specifically, JG just rips!
That’s perhaps one of the variables of “the change” sometimes individuals are just stepping out and blowing their top and going for it rather than the more laid back listen to the whole and build slow style.Again, subtle, though you can clearly hear it on the 7/1 huge stadium show as their trying to rock so hard to move that huge crowd, versus that slow group gestalt flow of buttery yore. They sound like individuals trying to hard individualistically to effect the whole. Rocking and fun, but nothings like that “More Than Human” kind of big band peak style.
Don’t misunderstand, it’s all good, just different and why some of us nuts have to listen to whole tours etc, to “furthur” understand!
So 5/14 is a sweet combo of this still very cohesive smooth Dead, but JG is not afraid to let er rip, even if sometimes there’s a little road kill left behind. Maybe A tad less group cohesivenesses?
But Right outta the gate, loud and proud through 1/2 Step and Cassidy, yee dang ha! Pulls back a tad on TLEO, but let’s go again in LLR, continuing on cruising speed to build up to a rollicking set closing LIG! Phew, good sheet Mon!
The second set continues at super sonic altitude with my personal highlife being Estimated, and the Eyes out jam etc. that’s the stuff!
Previously, I dug the next Chi town and two odd west coasters, but this 5/14 show really does seem to be a peak of sorts before something new is waiting to be born, as it always was with the band. Or maybe just the beginning of the end of that wonderful band version?
Perhaps necessity required both?
I dug the fall shows back aways, another time full of holes that needed filling, and look foward to completing 78 with the December shows I’ve missed. And there’s too much to even touch on about spring tour, but that little period end of May is yet another of those little treasure troves, a little outta the way place, possibly easy to miss, or not fully appreciate in light of the rest of the superb year!
So maybe give 5/14/78 a good listen or two and let er rip!
Onward!

You had me at '78.
This SBD Charlie Miller sounds damn good even on my crappy computer.
Cheers
Donated to Archive too.
Here's the discussion part :
Through Estimated now and a great the bus is firing on all cylinders show so far. Jeez I like so many but Big River, BEW like a good bourbon, smooth and smokin'. Longest LIG? Like a jammy middle that so many of these songs have this show. Keith's intro in Samson and more put this Samson in my top 5 but I don't know who gets bumped off that list. Jerry growls into Ship of Fools. The party favors were so pure those years, lol. Quality!
Dang this Eyes giddy-ups!. And this NFA starts so beautifully. I'm 6 min into it and we're still noodling. Yeah, Oro's got it, JG just rips here.

Alright, always enjoyed this show from Providence. I am in. Thanks OB.

I will add the post Egypt shows in 78 are my favorite part of the year. Besides RT1.4, they haven't released much from this time period.

As instigator, I got your humor Oro. The dust is just settling from a cruise (finished up in Barcelona. Probably blasphemy to many, but, after spending several days in Gaudi's cathedral, casas, & parks, he now far surpasses his contemporary FLW in my estimation). . . I know, I digress, but at least avoided all-too-easy political sniping except to say Europe is laughing incredulously.

That's why I've been uber-lurking, instead of the plain ole lurking I usually do. Glad if I kick-started some conversation. Bolo suggested this thread back when the pandemic was just beginning to ramp up. After almost 6 years, hated to see Pick-Of-The-Day go dormant.

Luckily I have 30 Trips on my phone, so, on the 8+ hour drive back from DFW, with Oro and the rest of you as guides, my un-trained, less-discerning ears treated me to Providence '78*. From Half-Step on, I time-machined home in no time. The NFA was a jam-magic carpet. Glad the speed limit in west Texiz is 80.

* Stand strong Providence 2025.

Enjoyed the Providence show OB. Great Estimated Eyes, Not Fade, GDTRFB, Around and Around and a stellar US Blues
I see your 78 30 Trips show and raise you the 79 30 Trips show from Cape Cod.

Dedicated to the Doc…
Chubba, chubba

Wow, forgot just ha good this bad boy is, and not sure I heard the sweet Ramrod version before?
The show in a word, consistency. A causal listener might mistake it for a E72 outing.
The most obvious difference though being the piano. Both the piano sound (upright perhaps?) occasionally piano-centric mix, and the new guys getting there, but not quite E72 there yet…
Very slight vocal slip in Deal was only thing I recall deviating from Damn near perfect.
Beside LL, nothing really stood out, in a good way, everything even, consistent, well played but in a comfortable flow.
But LL wasn’t a skipper here. Yes its 20+ for those adverse, but it’s broken up nicely with some tasty snippets of other surprises! This puppy is mos def RJ status!
Why hasn’t this been gussied up and out on the town yet?
And/or, 12/5/71? What day y’all, which do you like better, 12/5 or 12/15, I say both LOL

Or how bout this for fun: if we could only get ten more 71s, what would you pick?
I’ll start with
12/15/71
12/5/71
11/7/71
10/29/71
10/24/71
4/18/71
4/17/71
4/8/71
4/6/71
3/24/71
I suppose 10/19 needs consideration, and I would have added 4/28 except it’s been partialed
twice so guessing not happening…

What say YOU 🫵

As promised.
Back later to discuss…

Later
Another even, consistent well played show.
Overall, perhaps not a ripper, but in a good way.
A smooth group effort, meshing nicely in the “new” lineup etc
I can see why Dave would use to document the year.
Solid JS and Candyman outta the gate, though Candy perhaps dragged a bit? Prefer some ballads with a tab bit of feeling. Think funeral plodding W Rat compared to a nice, moderately paced one. Average Uncle, better Big River, nice BRW, though I prefer em a tad more staccatoy and jumpin, but this one’s fine and continues on and through the set, the even, clean flow. Nice Love You, ok Minglewood, definitely prefer this song more ripping!
Saint/Circ perhaps only part of the set slightly less tight, but good. Ok Deal and on to the meat and tators!
Love these 79 Dancins, and probably show highlight here, with good flow into Franks for a nice, extended opening.
Love those He’s Gones too, and a nice version here, the Caution jam is fun, but hardly earth shaking, though TOO sure as hell is! Glad no one was home next door lol. And when he’s banging on his bass strings like a percussion instrument accompanying the start of Drums, spanking the ole mono blocks, yee haw! Cool jam into NFA, nice BP, and rocking Bob finishers. All in all, a nice clean respectable show to take home to meet the parents ; )
Ok, now y’all need to participate or….

Hey rockers!!

I'm back, freshly refreshed from a cruise to the Bahamas. Totally unplugged from all electronic devices and that always feels good!!!

Nice to see the 1971 comments. December 71 a great month for the band, firing on all cylinders. 12/15 is a very fine show, the first set has circulated since the dawn of time and was one of the first 71 tapes I ever had. Second set is no slouch either, nice compact Dark Star and a killer Lovelight. Absolutely worthy of official release............

12/5 vs 12/15, like comparing great vs great. Personally I favor 12/5 for its weirdness value, the Muddy Water, otherworldly Truckin' (who was Uncle Sal?), the silent Dark Star. Have TPTB finally found Betty's pure soundboard recording????

Ten 71s I'd like to see released? Tough call and I have some quirky choices............

1/21.....1/24.....4/6.....4/8.....4/14.....4/18.....4/21.....10/29.....11/7.....12/15..............

Bonus selection/bonus disc: 12/5 but ONLY if true pure soundboard has been returned to TPTB.........

That's all for now, rock on my friends, make the holidays safe, happy, and fun!!

I think it's alright for what it is. 7 FM recorded shows that have been released without the bands sanction. The sound quality isn't as good as Daves Picks - I would buy any of these shows again if they were officially released. But it's okay. And the shows included, in my opinion are better than the officially released shows from this timespan. Particularly 10/19, 11/7 and 12/5. Plus the whole of 7/2 is included - only a portion of which was included with the 50th anniversary release of Skull and Roses.

Good value if you don't listen to shows on the archive. If it was an officially released box set, with improved sound quality, it would be one of my favourites. I should say also, that it was very inexpensive when I got it, about 10 years ago.

My friends,

I feel obligated to once again address the "Yellow FM 1971 Box set" issue.............

It seems that talk about this box set arises at least once or twice a year. It is NOT an official release. Therefore, by definition, = bootleg. Therefore, by definition, should be avoided at all costs.

Why would anybody pay good money for this when you can get excellent high quality recordings of these shows for FREE from people who like to share. Like me. SO if anybody really needs or wants these shows, I'm easy to find and just shoot me a PM..............

Save the money and buy your girlfriend/fiancée/wife/partner/main squeeze something nice. When you do, give me at least partial credit.................

Rock on,

Not the foremost expert on Fall / Early Winter '79, and I seem to remember you in fact may be, and certainly a huge fan. But to me Cape Cod is maybe right up there with 12/1 Pittsburgh? So many great shows with great sound quality from that era. As a small example from most recent listen of 10/27 and I was marveling that the Drums seemed to be well mic'ed with a proper soundstage? Must admit that part of it in my mind is 2 shows out on freaking Cape Cod??!! I have family history out on the Mass coast, north of Boston, on Cape Ann. Miss the oceans - Atlantic and Pacific - out here in the High Desert.
Hoping your Vikes dagger Green Bay the final week of the season. Like DJ Moore said post game - "At the end of the day, its F the Packers always."

Just nice polite very well played, compared to 900k tons of steel jumpin’ the rails ripper.
Your nice well groomed well dressed highly successful quiet mild mannered cousin vs your larger than life gonzo high energy fun slob and often problematic cousin lol
Love em both, BECAUSE their different from each other and special in their own way!
And yeah, Go Bears!
Sorry DV, Always have and always will love dem VIKS, but my new underdog fun lies with Da Bears!
That slot was held by Da Lion, but then they became good, not an underdog, and then…?
Same kinda with the Pack, liked them as a kid too, then recently struggled, earlier felt like they could be my NFC underdog, but their just aw-ight and still too hyped. Then the Commandos and that awesome kid, but then they nose dived…
Was digging Da Bears back a few when they showed promise with that kid Fields who I really like (wish he’d get a chance with a solid team) but then they fell apart again, but now,
woo doggie, look at dem Bears Go! The AFC ahem, of course I just don’t want to talk about…

Thought with all the arm chair quarterbacks here we’d have more fun with the 71 picks list, but only Mr G participated class! This is why this board languishes.
So Gold star for Mr G and incompletes for the rest of the class, and don’t think it’s too late for Santa to modify his list!

For me to recommend 10 need-to-be-released shows from '71 would be to walk among giants here. Having said that - 11/7, 12/5, 12/15 among others and sort of surprised no love so far for 2 pack of BCT - 8/14 & 8/15.

In replying to that chap who asked about the Yellow Box, I signposted 10/19, 11/7 and 12/5 as being worthy of release - well, all of it - but those in particular. Not startlingly original, I admit.

D for participation. You better get after Jeff Smith, isn't he the one that brought you out of retirement?

Bluecrow, definitely not an expert but yes, a huge fan. The Stanley Theater shows are great and the Nassau shows are as good or better. Favorite is still 11/5 and to have it from Norman is a huge plus. Great era. Jerry was really stretching it out during this period.

    Good morning rockers!!

Pick of the day? Go no further than Kirkwood, Missouri on May 14 1970. Why? Well.......you know.........May 1970.................

Been avoiding the 58 thread. Why? Well............you know....................

I was born not knowing and have had only a little time to change that here and there.......

I have a very good sound system and find the HD streaming absolutely exceptional. Stellar quality. Listen to Dave's 57...........

    I agree on picking something…

I agree on picking something and listening together. I have a big collection of Lossless recordings a good many of which are HD. I have Apple Music, a Dave’s Picks subscription and all. Why would I need a subscription to Play Dead? I got one just to check it out. Good God! Even though I am familiar with HD, I have a good DAC, amp, speakers etc. so I know the benefits of HD. Play Dead has blown me away and I haven’t even put it through the DAC yet. I have just been listening via USB in the car and with wired Apple earbuds. I don’t know if it is only in my head or what. It all sounds so great, I can’t believe it. Today 4/24/78 and Workingman’s 50th. It is like the heavens opened up and gave me a new form of music. Is this happening to anyone else or am I having some kind of freak out? It is so amazing. Every note is so clear. Phil’s bass is so detailed. I need a reality check to be sure I am not losing it.

Without music to decorate it, time is just a bunch of boring production deadlines or dates by which bills must be paid.....

Hey rockers, in this world a man must either be anvil or hammer….

    April 21, 1971
Rhode Island Auditorium, Providence, Rhode Island

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, there was RIA on 4/21/71. The force was with them. Or was it something in the water? Similar in tone to its hard rocking predecessor Cortland, but with “expanded content”, this is an underappreciated, quasi-classic that actually doesn’t get talked about a lot outside of “1971 aficionado circles”. Things get nicely weird early, five songs in they laid down the big jam sequence, followed by a wonderfully crunchy Hard To Handle. Things continue crunchy in set 2, with a non-drum solo Good Lovin’, a nice NFA suite, and an unusual two song encore which is sweet AND rocking. Highly recommended!

    Rock on!!!

I got 6-11-76 but missed out on Floyd.
I’ll get the Floyd CD or vinyl later, and possibly for less.
I’ve purchased some vinyl 6-12 months after RSD for a lower price, including 5-5-77. Doesn’t always work that way though, 5-7-77 was always way overpriced.

Just got back. Quite a line this morning. It was cold, windy and rainy, lousy weather. But I was in line with a nice group of people.

Got what I set out for, almost.

Got the Coltrane France 65, Garcia's Reflections, Dead's Boston 6/11/76 and Back Porch Volume 3.

    MC 900FT Jesus

The Springsteen in Asbury Park 2024 and Pink Floyd LA 1975.

Only thing I missed was cd versions of Springsteen & Floyd.

Got Bruce cd online, coming next month, found a Floyd listing but price was hundreds,,, It may change tomorrow after RSD.

Time to sit and have coffee, whew!

I'm relaxing into the strangeness of life.......

Pick of the day: Family Dog April 18 1970

Even a dedicated rocker like myself sometimes needs a reprieve, a gentle respite from the raucous, high-volume, electrical intensity of amplified rock and roll. That’s what you’ll find here……….

This apparent stealth acoustic performance struck like a bolt from the blue when released in November of 2013, has it fallen off everybody’s radar since then? Here the Dead channel their inner psychedelic acoustic warrior, covering traditional folk, country/cowboy/western, and tasty Hunter originals. And it’s capped off with six---yes, six!!!---consecutive Pigpen tunes, some never heard before or after. No other show, before or since, is quite like this…..

It appears that this was one of a group of tapes returned to the Dead by Mountain Girl, one wonders what else may have been there……….

When was the last time you gave this little gem a listen?

A gentle heart is tied with an easy thread......
P.S. Of course, don't forget to revisit April 18, 1971, for a major dose of crunchy rock and roll, as only the Dead could play it............
