Sadly David Bowie died on this day too, in 2016. I played his first album yesterday, from 1967. His very early records are usually dismissed, due to the most well known of them "Laughing Gnome". That is a shocker, but it's not really representative He made some good records before "Space Oddity". The music might be a bit Mary Poppins...but what strange subject matter ! Too straight to be underground, too weird to be mainstream. Which is probably why nobody bought them.

I had pulled this one (DaP 38) earlier in the day, after Proudfoot mentioned it, thinking to myself, Self, you haven't played that one in a long time, and it's a danged good 'un IIRC. So that was sitting on top of the player when I got the news. And there I was needing something to soothe my soul, so I popped it in the player.

It worked as well as anything could've. It's not a "Bobby show" but he is still all over this thing, and it's another one of those monumental '73 gigs. His guitar playing has always just knocked me out.

Ah, Bobby ... what we gonna go without ye? I suppose we know by now that the music and the spirit of the music is going to survive a lot longer than the band itself or any of our little lives. But still. A sad day at the Crow residence.

RIP Bob!
He was a road warrior and loved to perform live. Held the band together during some tough times in the 80s.
Was sad to hear the news over the weekend.
So glad he had a great run and extremely grateful for his presence on earth.

Putting on the big ears today to listen.
That 11/14/71 Other One is something else (top shelf complimentary). From the land of Phil to a section where it's just Jerry, Keith and Bob all playing quiet and delicate that had me ready to melt.
Now turning back to 11/17/72 Wichita, which I never really got in a good big ears listen. Now a little over midway through Set I. Bob's guitar on Brown Eyed Women . . .

Edit. Saw that Susanna Hoffs of The Bangles posted a memorial on her IG. I'm a subscriber because shes cool.
BRB
Gotta cue up the Aiko Aiko from '88.

All gussied up and very enjoyable. Another nice, well played show with sweet delicate dynamics e.g., Sailor, LLR. Similar mo to 3/14 and 3/12, as compared to more outwardly ripping MSG, Utica, Cole. Very lysergic like in that the energy is inward versus outward, if that makes sense? Nice timely He’s Gone etc.
Looking forward to next night mañana…

VINCE
So sorry for your loss!!
You always spoke well/appreciatively of her.
Tough week indeed…

Seemed like a good fit.

I've been in a very positive mindset lately, but Bobby combined with several other deaths around me the past two weeks has got me down. Bobby being the last one was unexpected. Brought me back to when Jerry, Phil, and Brent passed.

Blue Mountain has a reflective vibe, like a man in his years sitting in a rocking chair reflecting on his life. It got me reflecting on my life too. I think I will reflect some more.

I could not listen to Blue Mountain right now, I am avoiding the gravity of the situation :)

Keeping the drive alive with more 81 goodness…

We did Blue Mountain and my personal “Pedromix” of Bob tunes off solo albums etc.
I make em for various bands.

JOEY: I highly recommend the Bob Wagner AUD it’s very good while the SBs not so good!

UNCLE does that LIG not totally rip!
Chrotchfester 85…see Dave has given us a nice taste of the next night on “this week”

Both these are great shows - the last two I have played. The guy writing in the Taping Compendium didn't seem to like 7th though. Maybe that was due to the quality of his tape - it was pre the box set - more than the playing.

Elsewhere, Happy Trails and Quicksilver's first have been re-released as a double, digitally remastered cd. They sound incredible. It could be said that they are of their time. In which case I can only conclude that their time was better than ours.
Also The Amazing Charlatans.

Thought I'd go in on another "Fall" '72 show with a monster Other One - np Disc 1.
Was still trying to "wrap my head around" that Wichita Other One after several listens past few days. it's really really really omfg good and that it drops into a beautiful Brokedown Palace is out of this world great.

Good morning fellow rockers!

Today's commute----Port Chester February 23 1971. Not exactly perfect but it'll do nicely. Unusual Uncle John's Band opener. Unusual mid first set Morning Dew. Nice China/Rider. Decent doses of Pigpen. Delightfully crunchy second set.

Very underrated and always worth a listen. Hey, TPTB, why not release this and include the "missing" parts of February 20 as filler................

Beauty is unbearable, drives us to despair, offering us for a minute the glimpse of an eternity that we should like to stretch out over the whole of time......

Rock on!!!

And a happy birthday to Dennis!
Or this could be one of those prankster stage announcements like a fake Billy birthday or an unmarried Bob's 5th wedding anniversary. I just have a note on my calendar from last year when I misinterpreted a post and got it wrong. So either way...
Cheers
Oh, and Dennis, did you see that Tony Rice Unit's classic Manzanita from 1979 is available for pre-order in root beer vinyl from RGM? It features Ricky Skaggs, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Todd Phillips and some David Grisman cameos. I must pull the trigger on that one. It is calling me. It has a Little Sadie and a Nine Pound Hammer.

This crossed my listening radar via a comment re this show earlier today. IWT - only other spring tour '88 show I saw after Hampton run (sold my mail order tickets to Rosemont - school and such but ouch). According to Charlie Miller one of the only circulating SBDs from the year without ambient mics - sounds pretty darn good. It has a To Lay Me Down, which they broke out night 2 in Hampton! Lots of other goodies too! Also features a Drummers' Birthday joke - it's in fact both Drummerz birthdays - and a Happy Birthday sing along before a Brokedown Palace encore. On that note - Happy Birthday Dennis!!

Bonus disc of the October 77 Road Trips, and it's more fun than a frog in a glass of milk. It's a beee-ute.

And btw:

Beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror which we are barely able to endure, and it amazes us so, because it serenely disdains to destroy us. That's what I heard, anyways.

….we send happy happy joy joy to bday boy Dennis de Lion ; )

Hey rockers!!

From Camus to Rilke, such an interesting journey. Poetry is just the evidence of life, if your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash...........

Right now, listening to Duke Ellington while I work on autopsy reports.............

Rock on!!!

Doc
Man is an idea, and a precious small idea once he turns his back on love.....

In " The Philosophy of Modern Song", Dylan reviews the studio version of "Truckin'" which makes for a great article. The last sentence reads;
"The guy singing the song acts and talks like who he is, and not the way others would want him to talk and act".
A good standard to aim for.

I've gotta say, I was working the Bammies back in the day and heard something onstage that caused me to come running out to look. It was Primus with Les in full glory, and pretty amazing. Some years later Les and the frogs opened for Phil at the Greek, as I recall, and it was incredible.
