Joined:Ally Pally '74I agree but if or when they remaster those tapes, they should release the shows in their entirety. I believe Seastones was played twice, of which I heard one. I don't need to hear it again.
I can't compare the show I saw to Europe '72 as in '72 I only saw the Bickershaw show. The circumstances of that outdoor performance in adverse weather conditions make it unique. - daverock
Joined:Being thereI wasn't at those Ally Pally shows and have never been to the venue. Although I like cds I have heard from these shows, I get the impression that at the time they were slightly less celebratory than the ones played in 1972. I may be wrong, of course.
But interesting how shows get reported on as there are less people around who actually saw them. I recently got a triple album of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie et al at The Massey Hall in Toronto, 5/15/53. It's a very famous concert, in jazz circles, but in the photos accompanying the album, it looks as though the hall was only about a third full.

Joined:Danehead - Ally PallyAlly Pally is a big place with several halls. For the snooker, the place was full of seats around the snooker table(s). When I saw the GD there in '74 the hall where they played was empty apart from a stage at one end with the Wall of Sound at the back of the stage. One could sit or stand on the floor. To help acoustics, there were banners, flags and suchlike on the walls and hanging from the ceiling, supposedly to make it look like a San Francisco dance hall. Whether the GD and the snooker were in the same hall is something I cannot determine. Next to where the GD played was a near identical hall that was empty apart from a few people with frisbees.

Phil is SO strong on thisin!
Really, most of the tour, but my goodness!
I remember thinking this was the show they should have used for the Truckin’ Up to Buffalo dvd/cd, it even has a Truckin’ lol
Chever way, great shows to be at!
3-26-73
Got it converted to ALAC, transferred to a microSDXC card, and playing it with an iBasso DX180 -> coax spdif cable -> Cambridge Audio DAC Magic 200 -> Cambridge Audio AXR100 -> Klipsch speakers and sub.
Sounds spectacular!
For comparison I listened to 12-10-73 sandwiched between two listens of this new release.
The recordings are so much more alive these days.
Justification to Plangentize/Normanize the Dick’s Picks shows while also releasing the whole show if it was previously a chop job.
On the DAC Magic there are 3 digital filter settings. There is always one that sounds better than the other two settings, but it changes with each live recording, although similar eras will often have the same setting.
Anyway, it seems to me that the copy of the CD that I put on my music player and play through this setup sounds better than the actual CD.

THANKS MOM!
Happy Birthday
Uncle_T!!
Have long dug that "Thanks Mom!" from Phil at the end of Mama Tried 5/8/77. And as it turns out, 5/8/77 was, in fact, a Mothers Day show! Haven't done much long period listening lately but decided I'd jump into Barton Hall for spell starting with that Lazy Lightning.
Yes, have a great Friday and enjoy the weekend everyone.
What are the chances...
that 4/23/77 will see a release? I do like that one myself.
I did something I don't normally do, I took a break from our new release to get into 5/8 and 5/9 as I drove across the state of New York, as I headed up 81 the 5/8 Estimated came on...
I am home again and back to 54, man I do love that China>Rider :)

3.28.73 - Springfield, MA follow on to the Baltimore show (post-bust in NJ) ... Like 3.26, it's also great sounding, with - except for a couple of small misses in HCS - a very well played 1st set. Fine Loose Lucy, Big River and 1/2 Step, before launching off with WRSuite > a really jazzy/creative Dark Star that has some E'72 sounding sections up front, followed by some eery feedback, stomping Phil, and finished off with a stellar Eyes of the World. The late set Playing is also pleasing, despite appearing in such an unexpected spot.
Saving the killer Boston tour-closer for another time ...

DaveRock mentioned the 1/2 Step, Jack-a-Roe of course, this one and Baltimore's 9 days later are two excellent High Time/s, the quacking duck sounds between Scarlet and Fire.

10/21/71 - Auditorium Theatre, Chicago
partial show Disc 3 from DaP 3
never saw the Dead play the Auditorium but did see last 6 songs or so when Garcia & Kahn played 7/1/82 - encore Reuben & Cherise. Not sure if there are decent SBD tapes from that short tour but oh boy for sure they really should release something if there are.
edit - had not realized that Garcia and Kahn played Sing Me Back Home at a couple of shows on that acoustic tour [not Chicago however] - also Garcia and Kahn played it several times earlier in '82, Jerry broke it out in a solo acoustic show in April. Garcia hadn't played it since '73 with the GD and it never returned after G & K 7/2/82 in Boulder. total 7 times acoustic in '82.

A little something we all can agree on. And I'm hoping it will bring good luck as I just set out the hummingbird feeder for the season.

Saw Sturgill for the first time last Saturday. Knew he was going to be good but not *that* good. Nearly three hour set of ever flowing musical inspiration. Quite a few dead heads in attendance. Go see him!
