Like many, I find those early, Spring 77, Jack-A-Roes to be crazy beautiful.

And, as an aside, my favorite post Keith version is 12-3-79 (DaP 31 - my second show). Beautiful longer intro hearkening back to the '77 versions, Bobby's guitar on that intro is deeply cool, and the Jerry solo mid song is absolutely exquisite - a shining jewel.

Which leads me to the primary reason for this post - there is a very very very cool studio outtake of Jack-A-Roe from the Go To Heaven sessions that I only recently learned of. It was released on the Beyond Description box (which I don't own alas) so this is old news to many of you. I recently heard it a couple of times on GD Channel on Sirius (co-worker's subscription so while on work, second time just yesterday). And the first time I heard it I was like OMFG what is this magic?! Its uploaded on utoob to the Grateful Dead channel as part of the complete Studio Rarities Collection. Track was laid down 7/14/79 so just missed the anniversary.

Sure sounds like FOH Healy mix? Recorded by Betty?

Betty was fed tracks from the desk and mixed on headphones - that's why they sound so good as opposed to a 'soundboard' mix
Just put it on the trusty ESL 63s and the HD800s and it sounds like a betty - vocals sit nicely as opposed to being too prominent in a 'soundbord' mix and a good separation of sources
Also sounds like a 1/4 inch source as opposed to a cassette that Healy would have used to facilitate change over

Betty reels, but IIRC there is at least 1 patch, maybe more, that I assume is a Healy source, so a point for comparison.

Hey rockers!!!

Here at work getting ready for some slicing and dicing. Listening to the complete version of July 2, 1971. Just because..........

Music is the mediator between the spiritual and the sensual life............

Off to the morgue.............

Rock on!!

It's definitely Healy mix reel to reel Betty Recording ??

Same mix as the cassette's.

Fun at the Fillmore West

If you listen on archive, don't look at setlist

At least two pleasant surprises, as well as an energetic show

As BC notes this Jack-a-Roe is way cool.
Need to put the headphones on and hear what Jerry is instructing during that intro. Got a different backbeat going than the '77 versions.

The highlights ( presumably) on Road Trips Vol 2 No.3. June 1974 !! Very high class jamming.

Sometimes when I play my dobro I can feel the cone vibrating inside the body. Very cool.

8/20/83 from our new box... not my favorite sounding...

Going back to 10/27/90, I appreciate the opinions on sources, my newly acquired 24bit Miller SBD (from the kind and generous man with all the tunes) sounded amazing to me on the computer, a little better than the official, maybe?
Anyway, it was a little flat in the car and I am going to listen to the actual discs of the official here soon.

My two cents on 8/12/79 from the box...It sounded so great I couldn't believe it, and I knew immediately it was one of Betty's, hard to believe that recording came from Red Rocks.

Edit: thoroughly enjoyed the back half of that 8/20/83 Shakedown :)

I agree Joeymc - Betty recordings are almost indistinguishable from multitrack Compare Dap 53 which is a Healy and almost mono, to a Betty from the same year!
Currently listenint to DaP 25 and Betty is all over it!

Free concert at Tivoli …. Not a huge fan, but appreciate him and thought I’d swing by whilst here on vacation….. he’s moving a little slowly at 85, but he’s still got that signature voice ….. reminded me of seeing Tony Bennett at that age and how he could still hit the big notes. Saw that Sir Paul is starting his new tour in my backyard….. signed up for pre-sale …. But missed it due to travel….. tickets now well over $1,500 for nosebleeds with crap acoustics. Saw him and a slew of aging rock stars at the Desert Trip some years ago and that will have to do …. A couple of grand for a show is beyond my comprehension…..tcc

The same vibes that you get from your dobro are eerily similar to what I feel with my wave drum...... waves washing over, and being transported to another dimension.

That wave drum sounds great ! Metal bodied guitars - made of steel or brass, are usually much louder than wooden acoustic guitars, and have less sustain. It's very evident how percussive they are when you play one. Plus they are normally set up in open tunings, which means you can get a drone effect on the bass strings while you are slipping and sliding on the top two. You can lose hours playing one.

To keep it topical - playing now - Morning Dew 6/18/74 from the bonus disc of Road Trips Vol 2 no 3. Incredible. This must be one of the all time great releases, partial shows and all. It sounds really good still, but if it comes out on vinyl you won't see me for dust.

Healy wasn't mixing just for perfect soundboard recording like Betty? Healy had to make a live mix for venue which were not a perfect studio mix. Betty did most all recording's from late '70 - 12-31-78 and some '79 as per CM..

He apparently drowned over the weekend

It's weird how people you've never met and know only from being on a TV show, or musicians....when they die, it really sucks. Especially when they die prematurely.

Sigh. So many people die young, while others just keep on breathing, despite not really deserving to do so.

If you need a reference point, MJW was on The Cosby Show in the 80s.

😑😑😑

Clearly you can hear Healy dialing the sound in, I don't think a BB would have same adjustments? Healy would never start with everything in the mix turned up, as the sound of the venue changes one you fill it with human bodies causes the sound to change causing a too muddy of a room

I WAS listening to 7/24/87 set 1

But now it's the Jam Of The Week because Bluecrow told me to...

Edit: it is was a wonderful listen, so thank you for that :)
I don't think I would have guessed it being '78....

It's going away and so listened to it (I think) 3 times over course of the day after an initial stream on drive home yesterday evening from project area. It's awesome. Reached out to a friend who saw all but 1 of the Uptown shows and let him know a sbd slice of his past (that doesn't circulate otherwise) was available for listening.

Apparently available for more than a week for the last year or so. It has a list just like the Taper's section. You can see them by accessing through the Archive tab up top or by the Features, then click on the words Jam of the Week instead of clicking on the date. Sort of belies that title description that said "only streaming for a week".
This week's is where I'm going now - 5-13-78.
Because '78 is great!

Finishing up what I started yesterday - remainder of Set II - Rhythm Devils > Comes A Time > Sugar Magnolia. Enc - Johnny B Goode

Only Comes A Time in 1978! Previous 5/21/77 Lakeland and next 2/9/79 Soldiers and Sailors, Kansas City.

np - Rhythm Devils - a spliced in audience source that sounds very very cool with that characteristic Uptown audience recording sound. Back to sbd source when Jerry returns for some Space.

OMFG - the Comes A Time is freaking incredible!!!!

1stShow - didn't know that! Glad to hear because I would definitely like to visit that one again! Didn't realize you could click on the title on that Features page and it would display the previous installments. I though (wrongly) that because the initial presentation was just the current one that that there was.

2/27/69 on the official CD for the first time EVER! :)

I was listening to 10/27/90 again...

I want to take a deeper dive into 5/16/78 soon, maybe find a good copy of that somewhere...
I am trying to download 6/4/78, only it isn't...

So, apparently my Dave's 55 is out for delivery here in New York, our super mailman Duane would have had it here by now, but he transferred as the good ones are in demand.
So, now that sh*t comes when it comes... IF it comes...

Edit: I really miss Duane

Continuing my second pass through ETR.
Only 12-27-89 to go after this.
Just in time for DaP 55 to arrive.

Right now I'm giving a good ol' relisten to the Fillmore West show from 2/27/69. Very little left to say about this absolutely essential show. These early '69 shows really make you appreciate how creative of a player Tom Constanten was when he was in his zone - he's fantastic on both "St. Stephen" and "The Eleven." Such color on all these performances!

Good morning rockers and happy Friday!!!

Considering what day it is, you KNOW what I'll be listening to on my morning commute.

One of the greatest, weirdest, most loved, and most bootlegged shows of 1971. A show for the ages, which has just about everything 1971 Dead that anybody could reasonably expect---equipment problems, rowdy crowd, rock and roll, Pigpen, cowboy songs, soulful Jerry, ethereal Truckin’, Dark Star, fiery Not Fade Away suite. I have probably gone through more versions of this broadcast than any other single Dead show I’ve ever had. If a clean soundboard were to suddenly surface---and circulate!---I could die a happy man. Truly very, very deserving of official release. Please, TPTB, make it so!!!!

Deadicated to jrpaulson2009, canonico, pauldaley1, pony, b o, dirtrider5, alain, neveralull, ed.head, ords120, djaspen, manofort, zygster, mistercharlie, saintstevie, rockysgraetful, the tailgunner, doctorpat, and punster61, because weirdness accrues….

Where's your will to be weird?

    Rock on, weirdos!
