Koln concert. Had to go outside my collection for this one. Surprised I didn't have this given it's reputation. Did not realize he had a stroke and no longer has the use of one hand. Some background on the Koln concert from an article that got me here -
He had slept badly.
He had a backache.
Logistics had the wrong piano, a baby grand.
The piano had sticky pedals.
The piano was out of tune.
And it had a fickle upper register, what ever that means.
He missed his dinner.
The concert was at 11,30 pm.
And despite all this the concert is regarded as one of his best.
Just goes to show ya....
when the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.
Just threw that line in for Oro & HF. Wassup guys?
Cheers

Shuffle just spun me the ethereal Alligator, containing a very sweet China Cat/We Bid You Good Night melody interlude, from January 3, 1970, released on the bonus disc for Dave's Picks Vol. 30. Wonderful. What a great release.

I just need to agree that is a great release, great sound and everything very well played :)

My Dave's 55 came yesterday, #1493 here in New York State. Usually UPS delivers it all the way to Connecticut and USPS takes it from there. This time it would seem UPS drove it 20 miles right to USPS in SoCal and it came here very quickly there after...

So, I was listening to the first few songs of that, initially it would seem I like the sound a little better compared to the official of the previous night.

Whole shows or conglomerations, please work your magic and get it out to us.

In anticipation of #55 I gave this a nice listen on my big stereo (Polk Legend L-800)

Fall 1990 has some really wonderful stuff

I feel like these fall 90 boards sound best with the volume a little bit louder. They really shine when you dail them in a bit

Started with 3.17.93 Cap. Center >> It would have been very special to see this show for what's in it (a bit more than the actual performance overall, IMHO)

5.12.91 >> This show counts as a 'near miss' for me, as described before, having just been to the Cal Expo Shows the week before = short on bills and needing to work, etc.
This first set is 'up there' for me in the post-Brent style > Nice Althea and the shortened more Bruce-centric CC Rider into the shortened but still worthy It Takes a Train to Laugh ... That, and goosebumps up and down for Black-Throated Wind (not that I love the latter day arrangement, but) you can feel the electricity in the band as they trot it out & then launch into Deal, which rages along 'real nice' ... Set II with H>S> F later on today

Thinking I'll proceed backwards in time every other year ('93 - '91 - '89 Deer Creek - '87 - '85 - '83 - '81 - '79 - etc. down to the '69 show, and then spinning back upwards w / the even numbers - '80 - '82 partial - '84 Greek - '85 Kaiser 2nd show - '89 Oakland - ending with '94) ... Daves # 55, plus intersperse some BfA and Upper Darby, PA '76 in there some time in September when it comes and I'm set for the next few months!

Thanks, Man

It would be a nice homage to give us some shows from the 60's to celebrate 60 years. Besides, we are due and there are some shows with good recordings from this era to be had.

I can't help but think there is crossover between the banana boxes and releasing shows from this period, but what do I know. Even if some of these shows circulate or are on the archive, etc., where are the master reels?

What am I listening to now? Doing Box60 in reverse, just finished the Kaiser 85 which can only mean Greek 84 starting.... now.

Smokin' little show down in Hartford. Always loved that place.

This new vinyl edition of Road Trips Vol.3 No.2 sounds good. Great show too, I'd forgotten. Rock and roll, Dark Star and one of the best NFA-GDTRFB-NFA ever. It got overplayed in time, so it might not look that exciting on paper, but the linking jam here is amazing.
Big temptation to get Road Trips Vol.4 No3 - Denver 11/73 on vinyl as well now. Playing the cd as I type- and this is another gem. First sets can drag a bit for me from 1973, but this is okay. And there is only one cd of it before things open up.

7/31/82 Tobin matrix, I did like the Bird Song a lot.

I was listening to Daves's 55 and I'll go back it, I don't really have an opinion of it yet.. other than it's not bad?

I saw Uncle's comment and found 6/15/85, then of course I had to have the other two, and so now I have the run :)

Glad it's available....pretty flat stuff, though

C'est la vie

Back to prehiatus stuff, thank you

This double album arrived earlier today. It sounds superb, nary a snap, crackle or pop. It still works as a concept for me, although the claims in the otherwise excellent sleeve notes that it is cut from the same cloth as "Anthem" seems a bit of a stretch. But lurvely sounding music.

Made me wonder if they will release Infrared Roses on vinyl. I noticed on the card I got enclosed with the album that Seastones is coming out. Nice to see some of the more left field releases getting a look in.

I thought the new Greyfolded lp version were three records? I got the original Greyfolded and Infared Roses CDs when they came out about the time I was finishing up my Ph.D. dissertation. They were wonderful background music while I was writing, drafting figures and constructing tables on my computer. Really helped the concentration process!

I had the original vinyl of Seastones while I was in high school. Can't say it ever really resonated with me. It's most useful function for me was when I would put a speaker in the open window to scare of the trick or treaters during Halloween. I didn't keep it very long before selling it to a used record store.

Your right, it is 3 L.P.s. It's also "Gray"folded" not "Grey". Apart from that I'm on top of things. Fairly on top of things, anyway.
Infrared Roses and this one do seem complimentary to me.

My Grayfolded was a CD and it was before the second part, Mirror Ashes was released. Infared Roses was also a CD. I still have both although all of my music, short of vinyl, has been migrated to a digital server. Like them both!

The Blues For Allah filler got me thinking about it again... it's a great recording I think.
When I'm doing some work on the computer I put on something different than whatever show I am currently focused on, in this case Dave's 55. It helps me to focus more on the work because I listen to the Grateful Dead pretty intently.
Then I come here to tell you guys about it and everything goes to sh*t :)

Thinking of Dave's 13, that run stands out to me as maybe one of the best, something to point to in between two of the best years, a peak perhaps?

Man, that Lazy Lightning>Supplication was good just now!

Epic! Billy outplayed John, and I would say John knew it. From my perspective, I got the feeling that Bob was not in the game. I called it on the encore 'cause Bob was kinda knockin' on heaven's door. Sorry if I offend, but it's hard to deny.

Billy was outstanding... the song selection was like I drew it up myself :}} Gild the Lilly, Dust in a Baggie and Away from the Mire are like 3 of my favorites. Thank you Billy!
I hate to agree with the previous post about Bob... just a step behind the 2024 Bobby that I saw at the Sphere last August. Maybe he was under the weather, maybe something else, but I did catch a slight stumble at one point inbetween songs when he was back toward drum kit making adjustments for next song. Anyone else catch that? Hope you are getting your rest Bob for these next two shows. Peace to all... iGrateful

Mind blowing!! Billy was so insanely gnarly, deep down in the heart and soul of it, giving John this look, and John's like I'm good!

Really enjoyed the show though maybe expected a little bit more given it Jerry's b-day. Agree that Bob seemed sorta reserved last night. It was very cool to have Grahame Lesh lead the band for Box of Rain and stay on for Playing! And he was playing his Dad's bass - that was Big Brown!!

Thank you for posting about the Billy Strings set - i read that and I'm thinking what is wrong with me why am I not streaming these shows??!! Disaster narrowly averted!! I need to go back and catch the Billy Strings set.

Currently listening to the John Mayer’s Grateful Dead Listening Party on Sirius. People really had a cow when Dead and Co. started. I think he fit in really well. He's a cool dude, and definitely talks like a Head. Check it out if you have Sirius. Sundays at 9 and replay on-demand.

    Hey rockers!!!

Paperwork day, no dead guys for me. So today----Little Feat. Mainly the early studio stuff followed by live LA 8/28/71 and Paul's Mall 4/1/73. Some great stuff there. Saw them many times back in the day, while Lowell was still around. Always interesting and fun shows......

Next up---"This Is Just An Experiment" Department. Wanted to see how long I could go without listening to 1971 Grateful Dead. LOL made it almost a month so far, surviving on 1968-1970 Dead and lots of classic rock (especially the Floyd, we were huge Floyd fans back then)......

The way to gain a good reputation is to endeavor to be what you desire to appear.......

Hey now, it has been a while. I too have been listening to the Fillmore 69 box. Really I have been on a "back in the day" kick. I just went through most of the Capitol Theatre 71 shows, and now the Fillmore 69 box has been in the rotation. The Dead are great in all eras, even some of the post Brent 90s shows can have good things in them ( I have found a lot of 1991 shows to be really good too). Still I always go back to the 67-74 time period as to me it hard to beat what the band was doing back then.

Which I do think we are overdue for a release from 1968, 1969 or 1970.
