The Box of Rain and Wharf Rat from the 60th celebration.
Both great, but I gotta go with Box of Rain.
It just hit me with more emotion because of Phil's recent passing I guess.
Cheers
Added the Morning Dew to the list. Also great! Sturgill's singing sort of reminds me of the late great Toy Caldwell of the Marshall Tucker Band. Never knew how that band got it's name until today. (or I forgot, lol) That was the name on the door key to their rehearsal space so they adopted it not knowing until later that it was the name of a blind piano tuner that had worked there. He approved of them using it as long as they were "good boys and played good music". He passed away in 2023 at the age of 99.

Credited to Jerry Garcia/Merl Saunders band, and recorded at Pacific High Studios S.F. 2/6/72. It's a great 2cd set that is much more up tempo than most of the solo Jerry shows I have heard. Great strat tones, quite biting. This is an FM recording I have here, but I do like the sound. More in your face than soundboard recordings perhaps.

Yes sir, Blue Crow, you and I are on the same page this weekend.

to Trey's set - i tuned in a little late yesterday and missed the first 2 or 3 songs. Awesome grooves. I am a sucker for horns and that was an extra special treat. And omfg that Mission in the Rain (and Trey's "shoutout" to Jerry before that) was a gorgeous jewel!!

8/4/74 Seamons matrix.

Its a really nice matrix, I don't prefer them normally, but this one is good :)

Yes, that Pacific High show is awesome, I have an import bootleg CD set of it. I love it. Billy K on drums for that one!

8-11-74 at Keystone Berkeley.
With Merl, John, Billy, and Martin.
It's the Garcia Family Provisions album of the month and now at 20%off.
Saw the email from GFP and said to myself, "Self I sez, that looks good. I should get that." Then I looked to see if I had it as memory fails at times. Sure enough, there it was and I don't think I've ever listened to it! I bought a few from GFP in the last couple years and never got to this one I guess. A bounty of treasures.
Cheers
Review - Sweet setlist with a great mix of standards. Martin adds a lot and is enjoyably spare and sweet. (except for a couple of annoying experiments with some weird electronic effect) John perfect as always. I haven't heard as many shows with Billy so hard to compare that. If I'd have seen these sets I would have thought I got my money's worth. Just a loose funky, tight show.

Just read the liner notes for 55, and the bass on VOTC was intentional. Very, very cool, Phil.

My God this first set sounds so sweet :)

I am having a hard time really getting into 55, I've done more than a couple listens, I don't know about this pick. It's all very busy without much standing out, except for Phil, which I like, he seems to be going all out for the fans.

So, my two cents on Martin Fierro, I call him flute guy, because that's all I hear when he plays with Jerry. Sometimes he adds some amazing stuff, but generally I find myself not going back to those shows as much, I feel like it really dates the sound, kinda like an electric piano does sometimes, that overdone "70s sound"...
Anyway, not my favorite, and I have them all :)

Edit: 55, I do LOVE that Maggie's Farm...

Sometimes I struggle with these as well, Joey ... I think it's the lack of richer feel (instrumentally and vocally) to them. Also, they don't 'transport' me as the pre-hiatus shows can do - except to the feeling and memories of seeing them play '84-'91. In the case of DaP 55, I found that to be satisfying.

Many of Vince's fills '90-95 are too tinny/overdriven, and his voice doesn't always fit in (with Jerry's, in particular) the way Brent's did. OTOH, some of the backing textures he offers, when dialed down, are pleasing.

That's where Bruce really helps everything IMO. He brings back that grand piano organic richness that Keith offered. And his brilliance in his technique sharpens everyone up (again, especially Jerry).

Peace, All

It reminded me of the film Bladerunner. Quite futuristic. It's not a show I will play very often. And then more likely as background music.
Currently listening to 6/17/91 released as "Saint of Circumstance". Still with Bruce, but this sounds more like it. Both in terms of swing and unusual songs and their placements. Always good to hear New Speedway.

... about #55 / Vinny / Bruce

102 shows with both guys
playing in the band
waited years for a daP
release from this era

what's the selection?
their 12th performance together
no where near musically where they all needed to be
from a disjointed tour

give me a break

are these releases about the music?
(if so, then represent the best of this era)
or just about attending?

now that's off my chest
will listen to spring '91
all day today
beginning with march 31st
greensboro
ending with april 1st set 2

I hadn't realised Bruce had played that many shows. I have always thought of him as a guest, but with that many under his belt, he must have qualified as a member. I'll bet Tom Constanten didn't play that many.

Jerry just rips on this one. Love that fuzz tone he's got working.

On my top ten list for shows I'd most want to go back and see in person. Although, somehow through just listening I'm taken there anyways.....

Artwork is the most original we've had in a while-- as were those hot air balloons from Dap 26 Albuquerque.

Always one of the nicest segways.

GREAT RECORDING!

Because by chance this was what Pete and I listened to 30 years ago today as we drove up to the site, last day of a 10 day work block, beautiful high desert sun rise all pink and orange and yellow. It was glorious. We didn't hear the news until that afternoon . . . .

I am in tears

August 7, 1982 Seamons matrix, this one was made only a couple years ago I think, and I like it better than any other version. It's quite nice. You already know there is great Morning Dew here :)

Before that...
8/4/74 Seamons matrix
8/5/74 Miller
8/6/74 Blackwood - GEMS (from the kind and generous man with all of the tunes)
I still don't have a Dick's Picks 31 and maybe I never will...

I might do Garcia Live Volume 9 (with flute guy) or 55 or...
actually I've been thinking about this September '72 show from our new box, I haven't done that one yet!

Well, there are no Grateful Dead shows for August 9th, that's probably for the best.

Only a few more days until the new Jerry release! :)

Edit: I am back to Dave's Picks Volume 55

Dave & Co.

Gather all the available 1966 and 1967 and 1968 GD and RELEASE IT IN A BOX SET

PLEASE

55 is nice and all

Now let's get RAW

Elmore James, man. Dead show on the go - Road Trips Vol 4 No 3 Denver 11/21/73, with a generous couple of sides added from 11/20/73. They were really at the top of their game in Fall 1973.

And a definite yes to a 60's box set. If not, maybe every Daves Picks next year could be from that decade. It would fit quite nicely - 4 years covered in 4 picks.

Also, one may be at risk of banging ones head on Friday, when the 50th anniversary edition of Deep Purple's Made In Japan is released, and hopefully delivered.

The Charity Of Night

Easily one of the most powerful albums I know

For those of you who are interested in this type of thing (like myself) -
Rob Wasserman is playing bass and his work is exquisite.

I recently finished listening to ETR shows up to 79. First time through I enjoyed them all, standouts were April 71, 72, 78 (IWT). the Red Rocks 79 show has a good reputation but didn't click with me. But I was listening in the car and there are too many distractions. I will definitely listen to it again.

Before I jump into the 80s and 90s shows from the ETR box I am going on a little 70s palate cleanse. Last few:

The Shoes - Present Tense
Thin Lizzy - Bad Reputation
Blackfoot - Strikes
Horslips - Aliens
Uriah Heep - Demons and Wizards
Nick Lowe - Labour of Lust

Dead Set
It's ok, not essential listening

Space -> FOTM is really nice, even though they snipped and edited and trimmed FOTM, among other tracks

Dead Set is like those single serving bags of chips...it's a nice snack, but not an entire meal

I do have a copy of the 2nd disc that was with its re-release (thank you, Craig)

That will get my attention later today

Later "today":

Disc 2 is good

Live at Keystone Berkeley 7/73.
Great sets of standards and blues.
The Space Jam is out there.
Cheers

On to a very poor (aud. tape to tape) copy of JGB 7-8-76 which can't compare with the above '73 show. Practically lifeless. They had their mellow on that night. At least it has a bit of Maria Muldaur in there.

Two classic shows from 1969. These two shows would make for a great official release. Garcia plays pedal steel on Doin that Rag, he didn't play the the pedal steel on Aoxomoxoa it was Peter Grant,so that's cool.

So, I've trying to get into 55...

BUT, I just took a minute or too many to check out the Jerry Moore recording of 11/4/77
gd1977-11-04.141833
If you have never heard this one, it is really worth checking out :)

Edit: Two more days until new Jerry :)

I Really liked the 2nd set Shakedown opener on this one. A keeper: they draw it out real nice ...

Also, The Women are Smarter is at a pretty furious pace here - and therefore seems a bit 'fresher' and more fun than usual (not that it hits my playlist often)

Going to Hartford next

I had an extra ticket to Grateful Shred here in Vancouver last night. Took a buddy I met in China the first day Trump got elected-his infamous quote-"what have you Yanks done". The show was packed. The crowd 50% young and 100% electric. Very cool. The music was fantastic. A great time. Honestly, I was quite impressed how they played GD and Jerry material but as their own band. Impressive and great fun.

After the most excellent 3/26 show a gaggle of us lower midwest heads were chilling in a motel room and played the what song do you want to hear tomorrow night game - my choice was To Lay Me Down. Jerry broke it out that next night (3/28) first time played since '83. Plus first of only two Bob Weir Thin Man's (freaking excellent). (I think) one friend recognized Jerry's So What "tease" before Sugar Mag. What a great run that was. Listening to the 3/28 CM Ultramatrix (don't have the DL).
