Just got back from some thrilling whitewater rafting in WV. Nearby sandwich shop had a fence surrounding an outdoor eating area, which included a mural with a stealie upon a steam engine. And then another spotted again on the front door at breakfast/coffee hangout spot.

Anyway, now spinning Nightfall of Diamonds. Sounds fabulous after GD being limited to a car stereo for the past week.

Upper Gauley? No way. Not this time around. I've plenty of experience on rivers in MI with class I and the very minor and brief class II but this was basically my first experience with whitewater. So was rafting through an outfitter on the lower New River. Was the perfect level with the IVs and the milder Vs, especially with a guide that sized our crew up and new he could tweak the comfort level a bit (at one point we were micrograms away from turtling).

Husker Du's New Day Rising is a personal favorite.

45 years ago I was up in S.F. at the tiny Warfield Theatre for a knockout show with the Good old Grateful Dead . What an absolute cool scene. They had put up a whole bunch of cool old pictures of the Dead down in the lobby. The Dead kicked off the acoustic set with Dire Wolf. What a blast!

Having heard the bonus trax on DP55, I trucked on over to archive dot org to check out the entire show. Wow! I don't think that Vince got the recognition he deserved. He was an amazing keyboardist. I still miss Brent, but Vince was just amazing.

Great show.

So pure.

Note that there are 2 keyboard players, Vince and Bruce (grand piano).

Also, VGuy wants to know if you have a brother.

Very cool.. the New is a beautiful canyon and a classic run. I was just curious because it's Gauley season and that river is a beast.

The New is one beautiful place, simply stunning. Glad you had a good time.

I have a soft spot for river songs, train songs, and songs about backwoods Appalachia and so did the Grateful Dead. A great opportunity to connect all those dots with great music.

Hey there rockers, happy Monday!!!

Morning commute----2/14/70 early show. Mighty fine indeed. Especially Weir's playing in the Dark Star. OK yes, there's a painful tape flip/edit between Saint Stephan and The Eleven, but what can one do??? Well, you could listen and enjoy!

I'm still lobbying for a February 1970 FW/FE box set. 2/5, 2/6, 2/8, 2/11, 2/13 early, 2/14 early. That might sell a little bit...............

Great works are performed not by strength but by perseverance......

Rock on!

Everything looks all wacky. "We came here to see some psychedelic music".

I'm calling for a 1971 mash-up for DaP 56. It shall include the 12/5 Felt Forum show + extra bonus Dark Stars from 4/8 & 4/26. Just unleash the Dark Stars already, while I can still hear.

Doc, it's good to see you've revived your old Weir picture on your account.

Hey rockers!!!

I do most of my listening on my daily commutes. Today? 11/16/70!! The epitome of slunky. For all you initiates, that's a mash-up of slick and funky. Plus some great playing by Mister Bob Weir.........

Speaking of which, KeithFan my avatar has been Weir'd for a while................

Paperwork day here, so look out!!!!

In times like these, it helps to recall that there have always been times like these.....

Rock on!!

I recently ordered DiP 4. Would have sworn I had it, but no. Went thru shelves a dozen times.
So I ordered. MEANWHILE..... my son's getting married in a few weeks, so we have family showing up. I decided time to straighten up the music room. Go in the closet to stack stuff neatly and lo and behold, there's number 4 with the "origins" album and the comic book that went with it. Why they were in there? Not a clue. Minutes later the post office leaves copy 2 on my front steps.

Thankfully Real Gone will take back with no problems.

I need to make more list of what the hell I got!

extra note,,, not sure about new color scheme!?!

Couldn't post here a few minutes ago so went to the box post. Saw LaMP at an outdoor festival Sunday, excellent set, brief chat with Scott after. Highly suggest catching them while they are touring now. Only seen Scott play with JRAD before this, great to see him do his own jams. Lawton was killing it on drums.

The Jam of the Week 3/9/93 set 1, I think.

Otherwise I have still been listening to a lot of fall 1977
I previously listened to some from the beginning of October and now I just did:
10/28
10/29
some 10/30, and now I'm on
11/1

I had really just wanted to listen to 11/2 through 11/6, but I realized there was a lot of this tour I never heard..

This new background hurts my eyes :/

When do we expect our new Dave's announcement? I haven't been in any of the other forums in a while, is that what we call them forums? pages?

When I put spaces in between paragraphs they are omitted when I post...

Dick's 31 - Philly, 8/4 & 8/5 1974

As others have noted, these (plus the 8/6 material on disc 3) are mind-blowingly whack-a-doodle '74 apex of 'Planet Dead' creativity, with attendant WoS swagger. The Eyes from 8/6 - despite the awkward closure where Bob has to admonish the guy who gets cut climbing the fence - is way, way up there All-Time IMO.

Disc 1 opening stand-alone Playing is so 'off the chain' awesome! But then again, so is the 8/6 version with Scarlet stuck in the middle ... And it's similarly a tough call as to which I love more: The flowing, mellifluous Providence 6/26 China Cat > Rider or this absolutely rip-roaring Philly version.

I'll take it all, thanks! Any time Rhino wants to reissue the '74 Dick's & Road Trips material, un-chopped up and remastered, is good with me.

I feel like I'm posting on the wrong forum!

Been a minute... I hope everyone is well. This summer I took a job as a 911 dispatcher. (I mean I applied back in January... it's a looong process to get in) Started taking live calls last month. So I have a lot less free time. (Age-old story... when you have money you don't have the time, etc.)

But tonight... TONIGHT... I'm finally off for a few days. Decided to celebrate by going back to the November '73 box set. It's been years since I've heard it. You all know that it stands up... not much else that I can really say about it except to say the obvious, which is that the music from that legendary weekend is amazing from start to finish.

Proudfoot mentioned 4/10/71. The estimable Forensicdoceleven got me hooked on that month. I have Cortland 4/18 in the car CD player right now... that Good Lovin' is about the length of my commute and never fails to make me smile after a long day.

Good morning rockers~!~!~!

Commute this morning---4/15/71. I needed some Bakersfield. Plus, I'm in the midst of a four day creep..............

Mister Peabody, it's April 1971 and all is right with the universe,.........

My masters are strange folk with very little care for music in them.......

Rock on,

Doc
Love cannot express the idea of music, while music may give an idea of love.....

Nice looking Stones box set coming out in November to take advantage of....I mean to celebrate.... the 50th anniversary of Black and Blue. It seemed a bit weak at when it first came out, and it looked as though The Stones might have been on their last legs. Maybe it's because I haven't played it to death like the earlier ones, but time seems to have been kind to this one.

Dead album of the day - Dicks 19 - 10/19/73 Oklahoma City. Great all the way through, which I don't always feel about 1973 shows.
And if you are wondering what that music in the background is - it's the 4th cd from The Bakersfield Sound box set.

The second set just floats along like perfectly.

JimInMD-- outside of the whitewater thrills, also really enjoyed connecting all those dots by spending some time in the region. Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash's American Recordings, Hot Tuna live at Sweetwaters being some of the discs while driving along all those endless windy roads while the early autumn Beech tree leaves were raining down (guess they turn earlier in the elevation). Every little town looking about exactly the same. Caught a coal filled train pummeling across the river while hiking a trail on the south end. On a rainy day, drove up to the damn to see where it dumps into the Gauley. Watched some brave kayakers take off, one young local local shared that his name is "a Smith". Guess last names mean more than first names down there.

Proudfoot-- my guess is the Husker Du Camden Palace '85 video on youtube captured them in their prime. When I'm in the mood, really hits the spot!

There were two more Nuggets box sets, Nuggets Where the Action is that focused on Los Angeles and Nuggets Love is the song we Sing which focused on San Francisco, there was some attempt at more poppy nuggets, those are hit and miss, The Fading Yellow series is much better at that weird psyche pop. There was also the Back From The Grave series on Crypt records that is pretty gnarled but just as good as the first two Nuggets comps. Also the gentleman that compiled Nuggets 2, British box is Mike Stax and he publishes the amazing Ugly Things fanzine, which is one of the best music zines ever. With each new issue I’m excited if I know 25% of the bands inside, but well worth your money,

I am right now listening to Acoustic On The Eel, so 8/29/87 Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band.
But otherwise it was 5/10 and 5/11, 1972. It was more obvious to me this time that Jerry was a little too high to start the 10th. I am moving on to 5/13/72. It was either that or 5/10/86 lol, because they're so similar.
I appreciate all the stories Oro ! :)
I always wanna get into some '86 and then I don't. Ha.
Man, last night I got into Bringing It All Back Home and then Highway 61 Revisited.
I have this thing about wanting to hear every Bob Dylan studio album in order before I leave this world. I'm not going anywhere I don't think, but i remembered last night to get some Dylan in me.

    Forgotten Tape Format - Elcaset

I just saw an Elcaset deck on fleabay called the Teac AL-700 which was the best deck ever made for a format I never heard of. Elcaset (for 'large cassette') was the "improved" cassette format where the tape was twice as wide and ran twice as fast to rival reel-to-reel in SQ. The tapes looked like a thin, tall VCR tape. The format died a quick death and was only around from about 1976-1980. The Sony decks ate tape but apparently this Teac was the best one with killer build quality and plug in boards inside for easy repair. They had external DBX units for them too. Technics also made some. I thought I knew something about all the formats but never saw one of these in the hours and hours of my misspent youth in stereo stores but maybe they never got to Denver.
So this begs the question, did the Dead ever use this format? Was Beta-max already around and superior? Obviously reel-to reel was king but these convenience oriented formats tried to break into that market.
    Cheers

    Wisdom of Nuggets

One interesting thing about that Nuggets compilation is that it seemed intended to be a fond, somewhat nostalgic look back at the '60s (it was subtitled "Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era) and yet it wound up being one of the major influences on punk rock.
Prior to Nuggets, I don't think anybody was thinking very much about bands like the Seeds, the Standells, the Count Five, or any of the other one hit wonders that helped make top 40 radio so much fun in the late '60s. They were just garage bands that lucked out and got on the radio for a minute. But hearing two lps worth of that stuff in one package (curated by Lenny Kaye, later guitarist with Patti Smith) you could hear that they had some things in common: simplicity, short, hooky songs, a knack for turning their crude musicianship into a virtue.
My first high school band played a bunch of these songs. We couldn't play like Cream or the Dead, but by god, we could nail Pushin Too Hard! We knew BOTH of those chords. I think probably on a lot of people who were trying to start bands in that era cut their teeth covering Nuggets tunes, and I think you can hear the influence on that first wave of punk bands.
Anybody else ready for the Second Psychedelic Era?
Anyway ... just got done listening to disc 3 from the Ladies and Gentlemen the GOGD and I can confirm it is exactly as awesome as you remember. Maybe more. Also there's the Zappa/Beefheart Bongo Fury 50th thing. It's ... OK. Has its moments, but ultimately a little disappointing considering the talents involved. Not one of the must-haves in his reissue series, if ya ask me.

    Morning, rockers!!!!

Today's commute: The Who, Amsterdam September 29 1969

Now that is some serious rock and roll, crunchy with a capital C!!! Post-Woodstock, pre-Leeds, Tommy ascending, Who's on top!!! All the hits (and misses), Tommy, the wonderfully bombastic grand finale! Daltry struts his stuff, Moon's loony drumming, Entwistle drills a hole in your brain, Townsend our guitar hero, the maestro, the conductor, leading us to salvation through rock and roll.............

Needless to say we were and even now remain huge Who fans, everything up to and including Quadrophenia was a big component of the soundtrack to our teen and young adult years..........

Right behind you, I see the millions
On you, I see the glory
    From you, I get opinions
From you, I get the story..............

And now we return to our regularly scheduled 1969 Grateful Dead, which shall play softly in the background while I work on autopsy reports.........

    Rock on,

    Transmit all they know
