The Grateful Dead played more than 2,000 concerts, but none continues to spark interest and provoke discussion quite like the band’s performance at Cornell University’s Barton Hall on May 8, 1977. It is one of the most collected, traded, and debated concerts by any band ever, has topped numerous fan polls through the years, and was a favorite of the group’s longtime archivist Dick Latvala, who stated: “Enough can’t be said about this superb show.” Even Uncle Sam got into the act in 2011 when the recording was “deemed so important to the history and culture of the United States” that a copy was added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry.

Unless you are buying "limited" edition dead/garcia cd's Amazon is always cheaper. I use to buy Garcia Live cd's from the Garcia website until I discovered the same cd's much cheaper on Amazon. What is a country boy to do? You got it...Amazon!

Bill the Drummer
Kreutzmann is possibly the most underrated drummer in rock. Never mentioned in the same breath as Ginger Baker, John Bonham, etc. He laid that shit down super tight in Europe '72 when Mickey was gone and he was the original, single drummer. Nothing against Mickey I love what he brings, but this is a shout-out to Bill. Rock fucking solid, he swings, he grooves, he drives the band. So underrated. When it's time for Cookin' With the Grateful Dead, it's Billy cookin'. So awesome. This guy has impeccable time and the swing and groove to drive Space and all the rest of the weird,jazzy shit. Bill is your man. God Bless you and yours, Bill. Oh and I loved your book.

Whenever the greatest guitarists are listed, Garcia is only mentioned if a Deadhead is part of the committee naming the greatest guitarists. I think its because Grateful Dead exists in its own universe. Any casual music fan knows that Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughn are awesome, but if you're not an actual Deadhead, you've probably only heard a handful of songs that Garcia has played on, and they've all been radio-friendly studio recordings that aren't the best way to understand his genius. Each member of GD can't be touched by another musician who plays the same instrument. Playing in Grateful Dead is like being a channel for God, or the design of the universe to speak through. Playing in any other band is just playing music.

downloading at a speed of 128 KB/sec LOL!!! ive been downloading all morning and aftertoon. according to my download manager i still have 8 hours left!! WTF??? these 5 gigs are gonna take all damn day. this is pathetic. i should have paid the 60$ on HDTRACKS and would have been done with this hours ago.
edit: 5 1/2 hours in, not even at 50% im having a listening party later, so im going to have to spend the 60$ and buy it again on HDtracks or Acoustic Sounds. 5 gigs should only take me around 90 mins, 2 hours tops! i know its a first world problem, but man this SUX!

anyone know if this recording has the uncut lazy lightning? Or was that because Betty had to switch reels?

Is my old 5/8 "Betty Board" a SBD, or were there 2 BBD sources?
My old Betty Board of 5/8/77 has a cut at the beginning of Minglewood and a big cut in Supplication, but this new release does not. And those portions of the songs do not sound like audience patches. Which makes me wonder: Is the "Betty Board" I've been listening to for 20 or 30 years really "just" a Soundboard, or were there two Betty Board sources, one with all of Minglewood and Supplication and one without.
Had to buy
Saw an article on yahoo about the 40th Cornell anniversary and it mentioned that an official version was for sale. It's downloading as I write this.
Edited to add: HD version takes a LONG time to download. I saw on another site that it is 5.3 GB. But it will be worth it to have it in HD.
Edited to add more: Just noticed the comment below about taking many, many hours to download the HD version, and his frustration that it would be worth the $60 price tag on HD tracks for their quicker downloading. It's also on acoustic sounds for that price. As long as this dead.net download doesn't screw up and I have to start all over again, I'll happily save 35 bucks. But I have a long way to go! This stinks!
Download keeps failing
Download speeds are painfully slow - 12 hours for the 5.4G flac Cornell download. Have downloaded it 3 times so far and it ended up corrupted all 3 times. Something needs to be fixed.
On the bright side, I received my vinyl of Cornell and it seems to be fine and sounds great!!
They're working on it
Two download attempts using two different browsers failed (one around 8-9 hours, the other "only" 5-6 hours, makes me nostalgic for the old dial-up days...NOT). Error messages when trying to unzip. No central directory. Invalid archive. I e-mailed customer service and received a reply that they are working on it. If all eventually goes well, OK I saved quite a bit of money off the high price on two other high res music sites, and it will be worth it. But no site nowadays should hsve downloads that take this long!

That the digital downloads are available for this package but nothing for the rest of others still . Whatsup with that ...........it would be nice to see the rest of catalog available again........some of us can't be bothered with the cds LPs .......it's all bout the music ....leave the other stuff to the collectors.....

Yeah,this shows definitely is a smoking crater for me.First time I ever heard this show.PHENOMENAL!Its all good really,but I really,really loved,was the LOVE EACH OTHER, JIMMY,DANCIN,SCARLET/FIRE,ESTIMATED,DEW. I do believe I have some favorite GEMS again.THANK YOU!
UK Version?
Does anyone know what the UK (Import) version of this releases, specifically the 3 CD set, will be like.?!

Sam, the UK version of Cornell is the same as the US version except that the discs are marked "made in the eu." Rhino seem to have this on general sale here (it was out on the same day as the US edition) and at a reasonable price - you can certainly get it via Amazon UK for next day delivery. In fact Warner/Rhino now seem to issue all the general release GD issues on the same day as the US editions comes out - this was the case with the 1978 Red Rocks set, the 1st album re-issue (complete with slipcase) and so on.
the Holy Grail of Dead shows deserves better
After blowing the roof off BG on sat. the Dead stopped at Cornell enroute to Buffalo. It was Sunday, Mother's Day. It snowed, magic happened, the Holy Grail of Dead shows. After a night of pedal to the metal, tonight it's cosmic cruise control, a laidback Deadzone of Heavenly bliss. After listening to this show 3-5000 times in the last 39yrs. I was very excited by this release. It was in my shopping cart when I read the format, oops. Interrupting the sacred ethereal mode of transition the Dead so artfully craft is heinous. Five of them appear. During Lazy Lightening is absurd, during the great transition in Scarlet/Mountain is irreverent and nuking the transition into the finest Dew ever is among the 5 worst on the internet. WHY 3cds? 2nd set fits on a cd with lotsa room to "take e step back' The first set IS tight 78:49 inc "thanks Mom & we're gonna take..." leaving 66sec for tuning time. Please package this precious performance with proper reverence.

Cornell Sound
I have heard various versions of 5/8/77 over the last 40 years or so, all of different quality. The thing that struck me about this CD set is that the vocals have a pronounced echo and/or reverb compared to other versions which to me, make the sound more exciting and enjoyable. Anybody else?

echo Vocals
Jerry's vocals echo the most and I am not fond of it. I prefer clear even vocals.
Fades on Hi-Res like cds?
Wondering if the hi-res versions have fades between the tracks that align with the cds...Estimated -> St Stephen in particular. You can "connect" these tracks from the cd rip but there is clearly a fade out/fade in at the end of disc 2 and the beginning of disc 3.

The "Best" Ever?
This discussion has gone on for years. Undoubtably a great show and one I wish I was at, but in my opinion, there really is no "best" show. What I think the Dead were the "best" at was opening doors and showing us a whole bunch of new rooms filled with some mind altering music. Twice this happened to me. After they returned from Egypt and they were joined onstage by an Egyptian ensemble to help them kick off the second set. Another time, and for some just a bit too much, was the '74 tour with Lesh and Lagen doing their "Seastones" thing between sets and filling the arena with Kafka-Insect-Fear. These shows opened my ears a lot about just what music can be and to me were the "best".

It was a very good year. I am waiting for the Rob Gym UCSB show to get released. February of '77, it was a great one.
The Wall 8-5-1974
Hi Folks, Was just listening to a couple of versions of the Wall in the Archives. I was fortunate to the GD on 8/4 at the Civic Center. Hunter Seamonds has a great matrix of that show in the archives, then the next night, there is an even better show with a matrix by Dusborne, This guy is getting to be one of the best show mastering engineers around. I find it hard to find shows of the Wall that are great anywhere,and I loved 74.
Check this one out, many outstanding moments. A Great version of 'Tennessee Jed'.

Bill the drummer
I could not agree more. The problem with Bill is that he only really had three years to be as great as he can be. The music simply does not allow for the full range of his talent to be exercised when there is another drummer on the stage. The new Dave's Picks from December 1971 is a great example of how good he is.
Muleskinner - great recommendation for the April 15th 1978 show. The sound is great. I'm only on track number 2 but I'm sure the Morning Dew is going to be just fine. I really love the early 1978 shows from January through April; they had not yet turned the corner that they did in May, when they started to loosen up and have some off nights. They were really tight during these April shows, and sounded great. The wolf guitar really puts a new spin on the 1977 tour set list. Plus, a lot of songs had developed more in 1978, such as Estimated Prophet, Terrapin Station, and The Music Mever Stopped.
In search of
I'm in search of j-cards for cassettes this 5/8/77 show. What I'm looking for are colorful perferably hand written setlist and spines with some GD icongraphy, something fancy. If it's all older style computer graphics and text, that's fine, too. What I have are two TDK SA-90 cassettes in their original light grey cases with plain
white j-cards with "arial" typeset over the original lined, blank TDK j-cards.
Originals are great, but flatbed scans of photos of the j-cards are better, because you're sharing.
But if you want to dump a couple cassettes with fancy j-cards my way, that would be great too.
My tapes sources are: Silver Rarities SIRA 19/20/21 CDs.
