The greatest story ever told is coming to DVD and Blu-ray!

LONG STRANGE TRIP: THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE GRATEFUL DEAD DELUXE EDITION will be available on November 9, 2018 on three DVDs or two Blu-rays.

Directed by award-winning documentary filmmaker Amir Bar-Lev (“Happy Valley,” “The Tillman Story”) with Martin Scorsese serving as executive producer, LONG STRANGE TRIP brings together never-before-seen performance footage, vintage interviews, and other candid moments unearthed from the Grateful Dead’s vast vaults. The film also includes newly captured conversations with Mickey, Bill, Phil, and Bob, as well as many other characters and pranksters from the Dead universe.

All versions include the original documentary with 3 audio tracks: Stereo, 5.1 Surround and Commentary track with Director Amir Bar-Lev and Editor John Walter. This DELUXE EDITION boasts a previously unreleased, six-song live performance from the band’s first show overseas, recorded on May 24, 1970 in England at the Hollywood Festival, along with backstage footage from the band’s first trip over the pond. It also features two live performances from 1989 (“Dear Mr. Fantasy” and “Death Don’t Have No Mercy”). Snippets of all the bonus content were used in the film, but this marks the first time they will be released in their entirety.

“Around 2003, while winding through the 16mm film outtakes for The Grateful Dead Movie in preparation for its DVD release, I came across a couple of unlabeled cans of 16mm film. I loaded the first reel onto the Steenbeck film viewing/editing table and was amazed by what I saw. Not only rare, exceptional quality material from the performance at the Hollywood Festival, but loads of other terrific footage, showing the band at a Warner Bros. Records party in London (Pigpen surrounded by suits!), at a photo shoot (‘that's one uncooperative bunch of musicians!’), at a rehearsal hall performing ‘Candyman’ vocal harmonies and, most exciting of all, backstage at the festival. This is truly some of the most remarkable, candid, and interesting footage in existence of the Grateful Dead and we're thrilled to be releasing the entirety of this wonderful historical document.” - David Lemieux

The trouble with the DVD version has never been fixed. DVD 2 still is bonus content as is DVD 3. They sent me THREE COPIES of this title all the same; DVD 2 and 3 are bonus content. They replaced the incorrectly labelled and packaged set THREE TIMES with exactly the same set, exactly the same problem. The second half of the movie is missing. Don't buy from this store unless you want to be ripped-off.

    Gee, what a bummer !!
I got my copy of the 3 dvd set of this, only to find out that my disc 2 is actually the bluray disc 2 of the dvd disc 3, so I suppose i'm missing disc 2 of the 3 disc dvd set, while I have both the dvd and bluray of the U.K. gig - regardless, the first disc - the film showing the era of Pigpen - was astonishing !!
The third disc was real good too, as it showed all the behind the scenes stuff going on overseas in the U.K.
So since life is a crap shoot, once it's time to place another order here on dead.net, I'll be ordering a second copy of this and hopefully will get the correct dvd disc 2 - which i am assuming perhaps covers The Dead after Pig ??
It's all good, as now I get to compare the differences between dvd and bluray which I was always curious about anyway.
    Cheers..............

Received my BluRay copy. Watched the first disc. Went to the second disc and I'm given 3 choices: The Hollywood Show, and the 2 others. The 2 others play fine. The hollywood show takes me to a menu that shows what appears to be 6 scenes of the behind the scenes footage and that's all.

I feel like there was an error in the mastering of this disc and it's actually missing the menu for track selection (?) for the Hollywood concert? Has anyone else noticed this with their copy? I've yet to put it in a computer to try to extract the files in the hopes of finding the footage of the full concert we were promised.

I preordered and bought from this site and would expect the discs/products to contain the promised content and work correctly.

Is there some email or phone support we can report this mistake?

Also never saw Pigpen speak. Loved this. I also loved the irony of the poor film footage. The Dead dosed the Brits and subsequently had little to use of quality.

Al Franken is no Deadhead by any reasonable standards anymore. This was clear from his attempt to be a good interview subject. He traded in his bong for a seat at the Senate, and failed miserably.

Sounds like the MLBJ is from 6-28-74 but Jerry’s guitar sounds different than on the Dicks Picks. So maybe it’s a different MLBJ, or maybe - and fingers crossed here, a new recording was in the returned reels???? That would be awesome to get a Plangentized/Normanized new version of 6-28-74.

I didn’t hate it...but I did have a couple issues with it. One being why on earth did he give Sam Cuttler so much screen time?!?! That should of gone to Steve. Sam moved back out of the US and did not even return until 2004, having no clue how much of a foothold the Dead had made within American culture. So why was he given screetime after the ‘74 era of the film? That’s my question. Sam even gave ‘Jerry’s opinion/thouhts’ on a couple things in the later years that there is no way he knew would be true or false... That’s the biggest problem I had with the doc, was this English dude living in his van, representing us AND the band allllll the way through the film.

I haven't seen the film, but the footage of the Hollywood Festival is enough to tempt me on its own. Shame they can't release that on its own. It reads as though there is more talking than music in the documentary, which would make it a watch once only kind of release. The shipping costs also put me off a bit-wonder if it will go on general release and be available from amazon?

Why does it say: "The Entire Unreleased Concert Filmed At The Hollywood Festival In The U.K. In 1970" but then it says "six-song live performance from the band’s first show overseas, recorded on May 24, 1970 in England at the Hollywood Festival"? Six songs does not equal "entire concert". At the very least this is misleading. When I saw "entire" I was sold. Maybe that's what they wanted. Then I read the rest and was disappointed and now unsure.

I wanted this thing on video from the outset not sure why they waited, I guess amazon felt it was worth all the exposure to prime and everything else. I did enjoy it, but didn't linger on any segments as I streamed it on my laptop. I will much more enjoy popping this blu-ray into the living room system. This is an entertaining and important historical cultural document, highly informative and engaging. I rather like the Cutler bits, it's fine. The whole story of the Grateful Dead is so goddamn ragged and uneven there is no one truth to tell. This attempt was as good as any.

I was there at Hollywood under Lyme,17 years old,my first and last till Wembley 72. The story oft told is that the bands crew dosed the cameramen sent to record the show for television, resulting in only minuites of footage before descending into stoned slapstick, though the sound was recorded, I heard the soundtrack at the Alcock and Dicks Rik Griffin exhibition at the Roundhouse, so I am astounded after all these years to hear that footage of 6 songs exist.... Only 6 songs you say? How many songs did Live Dead have? You may appreciate that its more than 40 years ago, my memories are hazy, cant remember the set list, and I have only ever listened to officially released shows, but 6 songs might be about right if it sticks to the Live Dead template, someone else might have searched and be privy to superior information which might cut through my partial memories,May 24, 1970, day before my future wifes 15 birthday, shes now 63! Puts things into alarming temporal perspective

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who disliked this film. First two chapters were OK but then it devolved into an episode of Behind The Music. On the whole the movie seemed less for heads than for newbies. Nothing revealed here than all of us don't already know, plus some GLARING oversights and omissions. Blah blah blah. That said, of course I am tempted by the bonus stuff. Tempted enough to pull the trigger, though, eh, not so sure. I don't think there is any danger of this selling out anytime soon so I may just wait, especially after breaking the bank with the PacNW box.

So I just watched an interview with Amer Bar-Lev and he straight up admitted to using Sam so much through the whole film becaue of his rock-n-roll/pirate-like looks making him “a perfect documentary character” and that they were not trying to make perfect history but “trying to make a great rock-n-roll film.” Wow. Quite interesting and vindicating to hear my complaint directly answered and suspicions confirmed... it’s still good. I’ve watched it twice but for any knolagelble deadhead... well, ya’ll get the picture.

The doc was a bit underwhelming (tho I'm still getting the DVD.) The main thing for me is how LITTLE of the band member interviews ended up being included. A fair amount of Bobby and Donna, but not the others. The lack of the band members themselves in the doc made it seem like all the hype was misleading. Also agree about too much Cutler. I knew who he was, but at the same time I was thinking, Who the hell is this guy, and why is he shown doing so much talking about stuff that seemed tangential. Less Cutler, more band members. A guy living in a van is not a great representation of the Dead Family. A lot of the Cutler stuff should have made the long strange trip to the cutting room floor.

I liked this film although I didn’t like breaking it up into chapters. I’m hoping that this release the film is issued as a single program. The extra stuff sounds good too but the original post did give the impression that we would see the entire concert, but the six songs are probably the only ones that they have film of. From what I understand the film crew were fairly high at the time so maybe it’s all the film that was salvaged. Regardless, I look forward to having more Dead on Blu Ray or DVD.

How many other bands have the amount of content that the Grateful Dead have? Why are there any negatives to speak of? I mean, nearly every bit of live Garcia is on audio or video and stream/download capable. We are truly fortunate to be able to delve into the archives at a moment's notice, without spending any money at all! If you think something like this isn't worth a whopping $40, just move on without it. Believe it if you need it, or leave it if you dare! How many times do we spend $40 on silly stuff - appetizers at a restaurant, cigarettes, coffee, alcohol - we're talking about a tank of gas here. I personally am thrilled that new material keeps flowing for junkies like me that can't get enough!! Sam Cutler or not, it's better than nothing! Just my .02

Yes, I am interested to find out which 6 songs are featured from the Hollywood festival. I haven't ordered a copy yet-and whether I order the deluxe copy or the ordinary one depends on this.

I got my copy yesterday. We watched the two 89 performances, which are excellent, we were at the Shoreline breakout of Death Don't. Then we started the Hollywood doc. We got about halfway through it, and I was surprised how much behind the scenes stuff there is. Lots of following the band entourage through the airport, and hanging out in rooms and backstage while other bands play. At the Warner Bros party there is a loose interview with Jerry. There is an extended (I think) version of the sweet scene where Jer, Bob and Phil work out the harmony for Candyman. The concert part seemed to be:
Casey Jones X
X China Rider X
Good Love
I've checked twice now, that's all there is. The concert footage is kinda rough, and it seems like the footage jumps from whichever camera is rolling at the time. Most of the footage is in black and white, but a little is in color. Some of the audio sounds like not from the soundboard. The Good Love at one point just has a wide shot of the stage from the crowd, and it seemed like the audio was not as good. The Good Love jamming is pretty cool. Then there is some funny footage of the crew really high not shooting anymore.

I'm thinking Thanksgiving weekend will be a perfect time to watch Long Strange Trip.
