Back in the Grateful Dead days, New Year’s Eve shows were sort a hit-or-miss. Always loaded with expectations, they sometimes fell a bit short for any number of reasons—though through the golden haze of memory, they all seemed like winners to me now! Anyway, one thing most veterans of Dead New Years runs will agree upon is that the show on the 30th was frequently “the hot show.” Maybe it’s because the band and crowd were always more relaxed and the atmosphere in the hall was so much less frenetic than the next night. Maybe it’s because they (and we) weren’t partied out (yet).

SIRIUS XM’s Grateful Dead Channel (SIRIUS channel 32 and XM channel 57) is set to broadcast a live concert by Furthur, the rock band founded by Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Phil Lesh. The concert will air Sunday, February 14 at 7:30pm ET, live from Cornell University’s Barton Hall. Barton Hall is the site of the long-revered Grateful Dead performance from the Spring of 1977, which some Dead Heads cite as the best ever in their long touring history.
