Subject: setting me on fire

left the orchestra section during ship of fools and arrived in the loge for the basso profundo MNS - it's the best of the tour so far, i think, and the balcony is shakin' to its raging outro leading. i sit to take a short break, too.

yet another night of the first set seeming to spill over. first half of this second set is well-played, indeed, but the sugaree is the INSANE highlight, and keith and jerry are battling it out. one of the strongest estimateds of tour and i, for one, am happy for the FOTD break. the second half belongs to jerry - eyes is short but stellar and bridges to yet another rip-your-heart-out wharf rat, and NFA showcases some down in the weeds jamming. we're stomping and clapping and grinning our faces off, and then joint is jumping for sure as they close it down. another fine UJB encore sends me out the door, so very deeply in love with this band and its music. is there anything better than being a deadhead?

Flavor combo

Came here via a slingshot on Mars. It's been a minute... I grew weary of getting constantly hey now'd.

Was just wondering if folks were talking about the box set rumors. And I see you have been :) Me, I don't know what to make of it. I'll certainly buy it if it's true; the Alaska solstice show is fun. And I'm always down for 1970! But if it's actually true then it's a strange brew. Like Grape Pistachio ice cream. And yet the people who like Grape Pistachio really like Grape Pistachio...

Blues Bridge from 1970 to 1980

The only way this works in my mind is if the sets are really bluesy themed. For the 1970 Pig shows, that's an easy reach with songs like Easy Wind! Now for the early era Brent shows, they've certainly got a more gritty blues sounding feel than much of the Keith and Donna era. At first I do think it does sound odd, (and still a rumor) to pair 1970 with 1980, but with a bluesy motif and set list for '80, I believe one could match up the somewhat seemingly distant eras. I don't think that same philosophical idea would work for applying late '80s Brent era to primal Pig.

Different years/decades, different set-lists makes it even more interesting to listen to something new.
For comparison you always have your own personal archive.
HI '70 and AK '80 sounds very interesting to me.
And there's a lot more!

I was only following order

I don't think I've ever listened to a box set all the way through in order. Or even tried.

They come in the mail, and I cue up the first disc of whichever show I'm most eager to hear, and I listen to that show, all the way through in one sitting, if possible. And then I make plans to get to all the rest of 'em sooner than later.

I did think the variety you get in something like the River box was nice. The '71 shows were significantly different from the '73 ones in every way: personnel, set lists, and most certainly audio quality. If Dave has said he values continuity in a box set, I don't what he was thinking there.

Bottom line: I just want great shows in good sound. Most (not all, but most) of the boxes deliver. Hawaii '70 and Alaska '80 would be a weird combo, but I'm-a try to withhold judgment till I hear the music. Or at least confirm the rumor.

All the years combine

And melt into a dream, but like daverock, I like more of the single year boxes. Even if it means lower distinct song count, and more of a monotonous sound if on repeated listens. Sometimes the difference between tours is enough of a demarcation point for me to strongly prefer the sound of one over the other, such as Spring '77 vs Fall '77. Fall '72 vs Summer '72. Differences between years are often more jarring, usually due to recording and equipment differences, but also musically. Pigpen to Brent in one box, with no Keith would be massively jarring. For multi-year boxes, I lean more toward the '72 shows in Listen to the River, the '89 shows in Giants Stadium, and enjoy the PacNW shows pretty evenly. 30 Trips doesn't count, I was getting that no matter what, plus, it encompasses all years, save 1965. Give me a central focus for a box, and I'm much happier. That's my view on it, anyway.

Thematic Unity

I've never really thought about that before - but on reflection, the boxes that span different years don't really hold up as box sets for me. Both The St. Louis and North Pacific ones feature great shows - but I have never played them in the order they are presented since the first time I played them. I still hear each years shows in the context of other shows from that year - not in the context of other shows in the box they are released in.

I totally agree with the Kidd about a box of some 1969 Oregon shows. I've even seen a bootleg on line somewhere of a show they did in St. Hellens of all places! That venue was even more far out of town {PdXs} than Springer's Inn was, to which was also a good Down Load Series {#2, Jan. 18, 1970} release.

consistency & unified...

...remember folks that is any box's requirement from TPTB:

DL: We wanted it to sound sonically unified, which means if we had a PA DAT from1993 — very good shows in ‘93 that maybe someday would be released — but they just sonically wouldn’t quite hold up to the same level of the ‘87, ‘89 and ’91. Plus, ...sonic unification that all sounds good; similar to the way the Pacific Northwest sounded very similar because the recordings were made by the same recordists with the same techniques and the same equipment. Now, if we put in some Pacific Northwest, let’s say ‘77, into that box it wouldn’t have sounded at all the same because we would have also had Betty [Cantor] recordings in there, too. That was kind of how that ended up going.

To fill or not to fill

I always want filler. DaP 7 and DaP 23 annoy the absolute hell out of me with 35 min disc 2s. That said, I very rarely listen to the cd after I get it, I almost immediately rip it, convert it to flac and mp3, put the mp3 on a (or several) USB, read the booklet while doing so, and if there is filler, I put that in a separate folder in order. The filler from 47 ended up going in a folder with the filler from 31, since it was from the same show. I'm less enthused about the single tracks that don't fit ending up on a completely different era release. I would rather that be sent via linq in an email for subscribers.

My White Bicycle

That's a true psych classic by Tomorrow. If you collect compilations of British psychedelic bands from 1966-1968 you can easily end up with having it 5 or 6 times. Their album is worth checking out too - some great guitar playing by Steve Howe.

RSD anyone?

I was out and about this morning, but didn't think to check if the local record store I had heard was in town was a participant, so headed by later. Was looming for Talking Heads 1977 live show, but they had sold all 8 copies, surprising the owner. He also sold out of The Ramones demos, and Story of The Who which were my only real targets. He did have several copies of Nightfall, and a copy each of the Hampton JGB and the JGB Live from last year. May get one of the JGB later. Passed on Nightfall for now.

Anyone else pick up this new release?! Loving it! New riders of the purple sage new live release from
Hempsteader: Live At The Calderone Concert Hall, Hempstead, New York, June 25, 1976 captures the band live and on fire on the heels of their MCA New Riders release. Several of John “Marmaduke” Dawson’s original fan favorites like “Henry,” “Portland Woman” and “Glendale Train” are given prime treatment, especially this version of “Portland Woman” which finds the band stretching out with guitarist David Nelson and pedal steel guitarist Buddy Cage taking the song to new places and heights. The band also delves into covers by the likes of Delbert McClinton, Hazel Dickens, Jack Tempchin, Loudon Wainwright III, Chuck Berry, and tremendous takes on the Otis Redding classic “Hard To Handle” (which Grateful Dead fans will recall from their earlier days) and the The Rolling Stones’ “Dead Flowers.”

As with Thanksgiving In New York City, Field Trip, and Lyceum ’72, this release is helmed and Produced for release by Rob Bleetstein—Host and Producer on SiriusXM’s Grateful Dead and Pearl Jam channels, and NRPS archivist. I kind of blew off RSD yesterday, which is unusual for me, but there wasn't really anything I was desperate to have and I felt kind of burned out on the crowds and long lines I've seen in recent years. But I popped by the local mom and pop this afternoon and what do you know? They've still got a copy of the Lowell George record, which was pretty much the only thing I was interested in anyways.

(I already Nightfall of Diamonds and JGD at the Eel on CD.)

And I have to say I'm really surprised how great the record sounds. "Recut from the original master tapes", whatever that means. The fi is surprisingly hi. But mostly, the songs are just better than I remember. Great vocals, of course. So why was I disappointed in this record when it came out? Anyway, the reissues (which two sides worth of bonus tracks) kind of rules.

Thanks for the heads up, LMG. Mine's on the way. Saw some shows at the Calderone around that time. I recall it being a concrete shoebox of a dump. Somehow the recordings sound great.
Snagged the Flying Burrito Bros. Live in Amsterdam at RSD. Really long line. Saw a copy of JGB on the Eel and let it lay. Happy with the CD.

Just what the world needs another 1977 release, hardly a milestone for DP50! I'll just file it alongside the other 7 x Dave's Picks, 5 x Dick's Picks from 1977. Where are all the Pigpen shows? Something from the 1960s would be really welcome.

It seems to me to be very much a celebratory release for Dave and for his series of Picks. That's the anniversary being acknowledged, which has nothing to do with the band's history. As such, releasing another Spring 1977 show adds a certain symmetry to the whole thing, with the first one coming from this era.

Anniversary show 4/22/86. BCT. WHAT A START.

38 years ago today I was at the B.C.T. to see the good old Grateful Dead. What a start it was , the Dead kicked off the show with Box of Rain into Visions of Johannna . Don't remember much about the rest of the show, those 2 songs were worth the price of admission.

I was at the 5/4/77 Show ...I remember it as being really Good, I Believe it was My Girlfriend's (At the Time), First Show, seeing the Dead, I got on the Bus Late...1969...My 1st Show Live was in 1973,,,The Late 60's till 1979, (Up till when Keith and Donna Left) were My Favorite Years seeing The Dead, I'm Really looking Forward to this C D ...(I Remember Watkins Glenn and Englishtown, NJ as being Great Shows too, Have that Englishtown C D ...Watkins Glen in July 1973 would have been a Great # 50 also...Maybe 51 ?.....Thank You for Putting out this Great Music,,,Have a Blessed Night. 5/4/77 2nd set -- smile smile smile

I personally think the 2nd set of 5/4/77 is perhaps the best set of the whole of the May 77 tour. It just seems to have a balance to it that is unparalleled. The Playing / Comes A Time / Playing reprise -- perfect.

Also agree with WissominDeadHead, Springfield Massachusetts is a must release, The set list is stacked, much like 5/4. {I am still partial to 5/8 Dancin' Streets} Technically 4/23 is more stacked than maybe even Cornell? Anyways I just got my Dave's notice with clickable tracking number to boot, so good job & thanks Dead.net! Also as a final thought, since a 1976 release is due. The Jersey City show at Rosevelt Stadium 8~4~76 would make a grand Dave's release! Peace & Trees be with all of thee on this Earth Day.
