We're on a mission to make a miracle every day. As a token of our appreciation for making 2010 an epic year, we're giving away a high-quality 320Kbps download every day this November. That's 30 days of Dead! Intrigued? We're also going to put your knowledge to the test and give you the chance to win some great music from the Dead.
                                                     + More Info
You know your Ables from your Bakers from your C's, but can your finely tuned ears differentiate the cosmic "comeback" tour from a spacey 70's show? Each day we'll post a free download from one of the Dead's coveted shows. Will it be from that magical night at Madison Square Garden in '93 or from way back when they were just starting to warm it up at Winterland? Is that Pigpen's harmonica we hear? Brent on keys? Step right up and try your hand.

Each day, the first person to guess the venue & date correctly will get a Road Trips of their choice. If you’re not first but you've answered correctly, you will also be automatically entered for a weekly prize of THE WARNER BROTHERS STUDIO ALBUMS VINYL BOX (EXCLUSIVE EDITION) or a FORMERLY THE WARLOCKS boxed set. Log in now and enter to win!
                                                   - Less Info
We haven't selected a daily winner yet. The first person to answer correctly will get to pick a Road Trips of their choice. To get started, login or register using the form above.
We haven't selected a winner for the week of 11/22 yet!

I agree. Deadbase has it as 3/18/67. I have a tape that has that date and have since found 2 different copies online also saying 3/18.

Tried to open the new album art in a new tab...

...so I could get an un-squished copy, but Flickr is being uncooperative:

Sorry,"farm5.static.flickr.co" does not exist or is not available.

The slighty squished copy will work OK, I can square it up when I print it - and it looks FABULOUS!

Thanks Critter - how was the trip?

Looka here, man -

The Bobcats don't play St. Stephen. If you don't believe me, ask Gans.

Enjoyin all tha Jams, including St. Stephen, and all the posts, including the heads in turmoil over technical snafu's. It's a Miracle it works at all. Peace and patience, the Music will come to you. The more negative energy, the more elusive the Music.

3/18/67 Winterland Cream Puff War

I agree--there is no evidence on any source--on line or Deadbase that suggests that yesterday's Cream Puff War is anything but 3/18/67 at Winterland.

Time for Chicago

Thanks for the welcome backs....and I'm glad you got a new perspective on the younglings carrying the torch stealyrface.

Last years Chicago shows were Magical and really special, probably the best shows I've been to as far as the experience and music since 93 summer tour.

For now, for those of you who haven't seen Furthur yet, go do it! If you don't believe me about how good they are, then watch my glimpse of what happened @ FurthurFest this year...this should almost bring you in the show (as was the way I was trying to capture) and at the end of this "movie" is a soundboard linked up video with Terrapin Flyer and Sunrise.

Enjoy!

From the Critter Cam, pictures, movies of the band, and tidbits. With Soundboards from all 3 nights. This is one heck of a movie...grab some popcorn and a beverage. It's a sit down and enjoy. Time for the best Critter Cam yet!

Furthur, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, John Kadlecik, Joe Russo, Jeff Chimenti

Hot Tuna, Jackie Greene, Maiden Lane, Blue Light River, Mark Karan & Jemimah Puddleduck, Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams, Galactic just to name a few.

I won a daily prize, so....

Is it cool with you all for me to enter to win the weekly prize? If I wait 'til a good few hours or so pass somebody will have definitely entered a correct answer. If that's alright with you all I'll enter to win the weekly prize later in the day. This one is too easy and I'd love that vinyl set! Let me know.

facebook hint

Yeah, I get it, and I got it. But, I thought the hint said what song it would be, never did I think that would actually be the version offered and to be guessed. Lo and behold I did not connect for guessing until 2 late, oh well, as some one else said, my treat is the downloads themselves.

Thanks grateful folks, for a real good time. ;-)

Cream Puff from the 18th?

Everything I'm reading shows the album coming out the 17th, the Winterland show on the 18th and a Fillmore gig on the 19th. Wonder if there's any Chuck Berry chronologies to verify against - the GD was his warmup act? LOL.

Thanks for the gift.

The references in yesterday's clue seemed too obvious, but this enables many of us to be eligible to participate in the drawing for the weekly prize. Our chances of winning something are greatly increased when we submit correct answers, although the odds of winning are pretty high.
Daily winners might want to check the rules regarding entering after winning. The prizes that they already secured should be more than adequate compensation for them, and the weekly consolation prize is available to those who did not win. (There are no losers as we all get to enjoy this great music and fun!) Thanks again.

Song Credits

He did eventually credit Chuck Berry but not originally.

http://www.ask.com/wiki/Surfin%27_USA_%28song%29

Songwriting credit disputes
When the song was released in 1963, the original pressing listed Brian Wilson as the sole composer of the song. Wilson has written that, after the song became a hit, "Chuck Berry claimed the melody was his, an inadvertent copy of 'Sweet Little Sixteen'."[2] and that there "plenty of musicologists who'd argue otherwise."[2] Murry Wilson turned the copyright over to Berry without ever informing Brian.[2] Brian Wilson didn't realize for more than twenty-five years that Murry also "gave away [Brian's] royalties for writing the lyrics"[2], possibly because Wilson's lyrics list several geographical locations in a very similar fashion to Berry's original lyrics. Berry still has sole songwriting credit for the song.[1]

Despite tensions with Berry over the controversy at the time, Carl Wilson said the Beach Boys "ran into Chuck Berry in Copenhagen and he told us he loves 'Surfin' USA'."[6]

Wolfgang's vault

I think the story goes that the shows were recorded under the direction of Bill Graham at his venues, that Wolfgang's Vault subsequently legally acquired the recordings, and that there was some kind of agreement reached with the Grateful Dead and/or their representatives, allowing Wolfgang's Vault to legally sell the shows.

Here are a couple of links, but I would like to see one which discusses the agreement with the Dead.

Furthur serves up delicious doses of timeless tunes... Draw a Terrapin tonight; hopefully we'll get one here tomorrow. Of course, everything is

Of course, everything is tasteful question. However, I cannot refrain from thinking that "Saint Stephen" offerte's version in the download since yesterday is a disaster : the dissonances are uncountable, the musicians do not play together and produce a squalid cacophony. It is impossible to be listened, according to my opinion, and certainly not a present.

Nevertheless, some Deadheads will appreciate, and maybe they are even many. It does not stop questioning me.

Excuse me for my english, I'm french.

Thanks for this free downloads.

I just returned from (virtually) experiencing the performance of Stella Blue from the Furthur show in St. Louis last night. Deadheadland had the video up, and it plays well on you tube. Check it out. Squalid Cacophony!

Alain, that's an apt description of this most famous St. Stephen - Jerry was in bad shape in late '83, and I'd bet everyone else too except Phil (who was in love with his future wife Jill)

Try to remember...

To those that are complaining that the hint made things too easy need I remind you that you should still be grateful because every correct answer gets you in the pool for the sweet weekly prize. The last 2 days have been fairly easy if you used the FB hints (which are pretty much posted here right away in the comments and thus open to all) but the rest of the songs have been pretty challenging!
