You know your Ables from your Bakers from your C's, but can your finely tuned ears differentiate the cosmic "comeback" tour from a spacey 70's show? Each day we'll post a free download from one of the Dead's coveted shows. Will it be from that magical night at Madison Square Garden in '93 or from way back when they were just starting to warm it up at Winterland? Is that Pigpen's harmonica we hear? Brent on keys? Step right up and try your hand.
Each day, the first person to guess the venue & date correctly will get a Road Trips of their choice. If you’re not first but you've answered correctly, you will also be automatically entered for a weekly prize of THE WARNER BROTHERS STUDIO ALBUMS VINYL BOX (EXCLUSIVE EDITION) or a FORMERLY THE WARLOCKS boxed set. Gratefully happy, happily grateful. Let it shine!
Yeah, me too. There were about three different places to search/
But I ain't gonna tell.
Took me a lot of sorting through dead base and archive.org to find it. There's often a hint or two in the recording to get me started so I'm not sorting blindly.
...hope they didn't forget LOL. The debates on the hints are pretty entertaining.
Is this getting easier or is it just me?
Just as many people correctly tagged Music as picked Cassidy, or Mexicali, or Black-throated Wind etc. Might have been a little tricky but other than maybe being published with a GD label Cassidy and all those Ace songs aren't anywhere listed as Grateful Dead singles, from what I could find.
Loves me some Donna Dead ;)
A good point, one I had actually thought about a little earlier. The other stance would be enjoying the satisfaction of getting it on your own. That's part of what that little tiff was little earlier. I'm much more relaxed about it now, what with the subsequent shedding of light. The getting it on your own thing doesn't always work except for the most 'deadicated' freaks sometimes. But, I'm starting to freak myself out now though guessing right on the Playin', Stephen, and Music without much help at all. Lucky guesses, that is 'deaducated' guesses. Now, if this would only work with the lottery...
i got thrown through a loop trying to find the city!!!
coulda been a contender :D
this song would not download, can I try again
hey Captain Stormfield - love the baseball cards analogy!
on second thought, I'm keeping the '73 Playin' ;)
I Knew Dr. Suess would not let me down! Horton Field House. This is a lot of fun & definitely a Grateful Scavenger Hunt! Thank You!
is Boston 5-7-77, the night before Cornell.
Sounds like Bobby on may 9 in Rochester new York .- Im pretty darn sure ....... What do you think folks ?
* it s not so potent though . On a scale from 1 to 10 , Id give it an 8 1 / 2 ; Not release material ....... These get better by the day . Like the Futher fest . Greetings from beautiful Chile //
there are two ways to look at it when folks (myself included) post hints here in the comments - first, we're tooting our own horns, ie: we figured it out, perhaps by doing a little research, perhaps by guessing, perhaps we actually knew what show it was after one listen (now those are the SuperDeadHeads!)
However, by posting hints, we are also giving someone else (who hasn't posted an answer yet), a chance to guess at the answer....and if correct, that person is also in the running for the weekly prize :)
So it seems that posting hints may be leveling the playing field, so to speak, and giving everyone a chance to win...is that such a bad thing?
Perhaps " Loser " today being that it is the 13th .
nice version, I'm going with early 79, right before donna and Keith left, might be last time TMNS played with those two, don't know, didn't research it, just a guess.
Phenomenal version of TMNS!!! I thought I had nailed it pretty quick until a little more digging proved myself wrong! Can I retract guess???
There is no shortage of shows that ended the 1st set with this tune but no doubt the band was ON for this one. ....and I'll keep on guessin'....
What a smokin' music...That just made my night and like some comments before, can't wait to put this on my ipod when 30 days are done and jam to the "30days" setlist!!
Thank you Dead.net
Might even make some kind of x-mas present out of them...
Don't let The music stop
Enjoy all..and girls keep twirlin'
You can download from here, too:
"They're a Band Beyond description....like Jehovah's favorite choir, People joining hand in hand - WHILE THE MUSIC PLAYS THE BAND! - LORD, they're a settin' us on fire! "
I feel so GRATEFUL to have experienced JUST THIS! Thank you GD for all the great music, great times and great memories - YOU KNOW OUR LOVE WILL NOT FADE AWAY, ~AmericanBeauty aka RIchelle
PS,,,Thanks DeadNet for the 30 Days of Free Downloads.
This has been a great adventure. Love the posts, love the challenge, am ecstatic about the music.
I agree with Captain Stormfield, what an advantage we have using this technology to create our own playlists/shows/etc. Many thanks all around, you're a joy to all. PEACE!
I think what's going on here is awesome..I have missed on every guess, just triing to get the year correct...lol
I guessed '81 on "music"
Great job dead.net and really enjoying the music
Have to remember east coasters, it's coming from the west coast and by the time they put it on the site its getting hammered with hits to it.
I have been downloading at 6-7pm east coast and no trouble getting full downloads
Keep the music coming dead.net
Wow. As fine a version as I've ever heard. Jerry's leads hit the stratosphere around 6:46....the drummers are on pounding, and some fiery vocals by Bob to get it all rolling.
Niiice. THANK YOU. Excitedly awaiting the identity of this show.
Can somebody help me out? I see the name of the track, location/date of track and description of track but nothing click-able to allow me to download the track.
Thanks in advance!
i know i got, just dont know if i was first. i remember it from the tapers section back when you could download them, and i've been diggin it ever since. personally, the hottest music i've ever heard. well, maybe just my fav! is a better way to put it!!!
good luck everyone, and thanks to the folks at dead.net for doing this. its awesome! its so great to see 200+ people on the site instead of 20. the more the merrier! like the boys said, this wasnt supposed to be a private party!!!
cbs73- I guess I was taken in, since WB released the Cassidy/OMSN single as Bob Weir, but with the skull & roses (GD) stamp on it.
And they kept on dancin' ....
I think people are figuring this one out right.
And a certain 'boy' is the only one who's ever made an audience
recording of this show available.
Who's got another one?
A superior one?
Somebody claimed there was another, of course they always say that.
I'll believe it when it shows up some day.
"It's got no signs or dividing line and very few rules to guide"
But no hints!
We're gonna take a short break, everybody hang loose.
Thanks Jerry, your playing at the end induces a face-hurting smile of immense pleasure... Thanks for bringing this joy into our days. You are missed...
This whole '30 days' experiment has been lots of fun, and it reminds me of playing with toys as a kid. Not that anyone cares, but I like playing around with the songs in iTunes. I just put them in a playlist chronologically. I can't wait to have them all in one long, chronological playlist (ten years ago, who would have dreamed of having the technology to do this?). It will be sorta like a brief snapshot of the band's performing history from beginning to end. Wow, I must be a genius, huh? I bet no one else thought of doing that! But seriously, getting new downloads every day is like playing with new toys, or like waiting for a new baseball card or other collectible to come out, with the hope of having 'the complete set' as I used to say when I was a kid collecting baseball cards. That's the feeling I get. It totally reminds me of being a kid. My wife doesn't get it - I used the 'new toys' simile and she kind of understood that. In her mind, one version of 'Dark Star' is enough. In my mind, there aren't nearly enough Dark Stars available. I can never have enough, to her chagrin.
As far as the music? I can pretty much nail the year almost every time (I was off by a year on a couple of them). I don't have the time to search for the correct dates/shows, as much as I'd like to, so I guess I won't be winning anything.
My favorite tune thus far is easily the '73 'Playin'. Nothing like an extended jam from '73. Is that a great version or what? As far as 'St. Stephen,' I really like the outro. Both versions of 'He's Gone' are terrific. And 'Estimated' just builds, and builds, and builds in intensity.
Well, just thought I'd weigh in...
Boooo to the hints and clues. Just post the song and let us guess.
"It's got no signs or dividing line and very few rules to guide"
That was one SNEAKY piece of trivia . I could ve sworn it was spring 77 . The more dsicosih drums , though makes sense it d be from 1978 .
onstage between Bobby and Donna and incorrectly guessed 5/11/78...
It seemed like a good guess, until I did a little research after-the-fact: they didn't play the song that night!
5/26/77 but I am sure I am wrong. I love that little intro before they actually launch into the song. Very curious to know the right answer.
"Really?" There's your giveaway, and there's no way my answer was close to first.
... narrows it down, but there's still a lot of shows that meet these criteria
that I guessed wrong. This has to be from 78 (May or July)
Wow! Smokin hot jam! What a great song, and a great version
My guess would be, maybe, that really amazing 77 tour. Still
not sure. Thank you for this.
It's working now - try again. Nice. Thank U
Really jjjbaggins, that's not very normal.
20.3MB - worked perfectly. Thank you SO much to the wonderful team that's posting these each day.
no way, you're all way off base. This is Jerry and Sarah from '62 with special guest vocalist Robert Weird.
After som trouble with the download I got it via:
Not a problem that way after I listened I decided on alittle akoostick Jerry..Man those Pizza tapes are sweet...Miss ya Jer,
Peace from Philly
Jim da Jazz Kat
Definitely not from 1977 or earlier.... :-)
All "Normal" Dead fans will recognize it.
around the room long enough to remember this is supposed to be a contest and tried guessing a certain '77 show before I broke something.
Now I've got to go back and listen to this one again several more times so, pardon me, I'll be back later when I come down off the ceiling. :)
