                                                     + More Info
You know your Ables from your Bakers from your C's, but can your finely tuned ears differentiate the cosmic "comeback" tour from a spacey 70's show? Each day we'll post a free download from one of the Dead's coveted shows. Will it be from that magical night at Madison Square Garden in '93 or from way back when they were just starting to warm it up at Winterland? Is that Pigpen's harmonica we hear? Brent on keys? Step right up and try your hand.

Each day, the first person to guess the venue & date correctly will get a Road Trips of their choice. If you’re not first but you've answered correctly, you will also be automatically entered for a weekly prize of THE WARNER BROTHERS STUDIO ALBUMS VINYL BOX (EXCLUSIVE EDITION) or a FORMERLY THE WARLOCKS boxed set. More Pigpen please

It's been great so far, and thanks to the org for setting this up, and finally getting the servers to work.

I'm sure we'll be getting a tasty Lovelight soon, but more Pigpen would certainly be welcome. (Maybe a Hard to Handle?)

Hi there, Interesting interpretation re Jerry's playing ... but I'm afraid that you're a good few years out with 1967. And if you listen again carefully to the dead air you'll hear that it's not Don't Ease that they're getting ready for... I'll say no more so as not to be a spoiler. So frustrating that us Brits can't participate in this competition. I have got 13 of the 14 so far... Still it's nice to get the songs - many of which are much better quality than the versions I already have. And if anyone from dead.net is reading, how about a 1972 Other One sandwich? Could test the server as many of these run to 40 minutes. Or a 1977 Scarlet>Fire. Please

Went to the archive...

... to find the song they're going into. I like it better than todays pick. But I ain't complaining, it's all good. Tomorrow, I have to work, so I can't go for it.

If it's what I think it is, it's gonna be hard, cause they're all really similar.

hmmm

Yeah, while deadlists only lists 6 shows from 1970, deadbase shows Minglewood being played at 10 shows.

I think...

they chose this version because of its different lyrics - it gave us something 'concrete' to listen for in our frantic search for the correct show - plus, the dead air after gave us a glimpse of the next tune...

I initially thought it was from the April Fillmore East shows, as it had that Jerry 'Les Paul' sound, but the vocals were too raw, so I headed into 1970 (where I found my answer)

I would highly recommend the warlocks box and the new vinyl release, if you're into that, the vinyl release has the original mixes of Anthem and Aoxomoxoa which I have heard and are quite different than the previous remixes and quite spacey.

Whooppsss.... Sent my guess in and then realized it was wrong. :-(
The tuning in the "dead air" totally gave it away. Nice to see our sound wizard friends posting these tunes are having some fun with this by leaving us little clues like this. (^_^)

Thank You.

Thanks, Dead.net, for the free tracks! Much appreciated... By the way, does anyone know how I can get the "B" versions?

Wonderful

What can I say? It's halfway through November and already its been a grateful dead month. I've never even been a big fan of NMW, but this is a great version. And every day I get up in the morning (down under) and it's like a new present gift wrapped under the Christmas Tree. Still looking for a box of rain, though! Or an "Electric Train". So much joy!!!! Thanks to all those in the community who helped with the downloads, thanks to dead.net for creating this opportunity, thanks to the dead for such amazing music. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. Merry Halloween, ZIppy Christmas and Gorgeous New Year.

Thanks

Thanks to all at the Dead organization for sharing these downloads. Only got into the Dead about 20 years ago and feel that I missed sooo much! Never got to see the band live but with the DVD's and the various live shows released by the band over the years feel I am catching up.
Think Santa is bringing me Winterland '77 ( got 73 last year), so fingers crossed. (Is it silly to ask if the "Formely The Warlocks" a good set? as I am hoping Rudolph will sneak that in also.

Making up for lost time now though and thanks to all who post their memories and stories I feel I am catching some of the good vibes around the community.

THANKS GUYS AND GALS

correction

further to dstache's earlier post, my search shows it was played twice in 1969, 10 times in 1970 and twice in 1971. It's gotta be one of those

new, new minglewood blues

actually, I've seen it this way too, on the long strange trip best of lp, it is labeled this way, and I know I've seen it labeled that way on other lp's/tapes. Could be the added lyrics "T for Texas" or the "right here in (add city) where the little girls know what to do" that makes it New, new... not sure, will take a tad more research to bring it to light.

Jerry Guitar style

Well this is obviously early! Jerry's guitar style evolved very rapidly in the sixties from say the first album to Live Dead, less than three years.

So stylistically I would put this in early '67, sounds earlier than the live sections of Anthem which were later that year. Fascinating to listen to as I don't think I've heard a version of NMB sounding quite like this. Another surprise!

Sounds like they might be about to go into Don't Ease Me In at the end?

cool.....

Never heard this "dark hollow" verse before! Reminiscent of the "muddy water" verse in Rider.
Funny, the recent Road Trips 5-15-70 featured the only live version I've heard that actually includes the "don't make it hard to believe in you" verse (does anyone else get the impression Bob wrote that one himself? It's awfully "ring around the sun"-ish for an old swamp tune about cruising chicks).

Put my guess in on this one, though I'm surely not the first.

Would like to hear the 4-26-69 version sometime, wish they'd have squeezed that onto Dick's 26 (one of my favorites).

while we're talking Minglewood....

....how 'bout Hampton '87, eh? Newly-reborn Jerry just tearing into it with relish. Brent whirling those organ notes around.... Sigh, involuntary smile on my face right now.

Thanks for the feedback. Postal cost of vinyl would probably be prohibitive which is a shame because like a lot of other people I am buying vinyl again.

Dead Air Fix

Hey Everyone,
One solution to the dead air at the end of few cuts is a program called Audacity. It's open source, and has a really great price: free!. It works on Mac, PC and Linux. Open the song, click and drag what you want to cut, hit the Delete key, and save. Due to copyright restrictions, you'll need to add mp3 encoding capability yourself, but it just involves downloading and installing the LAME encoder.
Get it here: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Have fun!

how about some "meat" tunes

first off, i'm very happy dead.net is doing the 30 days of D/Ls, THANK YOU. BUT, although i've enjoyed ALTHEA, SUGAREE, and ESTIMATED, I kinda feel like we're getting a bunch of filler. I feel like we are missing good meat here, here's hoping the next two weeks has sick versions of : Scarlet>Fire, Jack Straw, Bertha, Candyman, High Time, Cassicy, Miss.1/2 step, Uncle John's, Row Jimmy, BE women, EYES?!?!, and maybe a great late 80's West LA.

Speaking of the 1980's material, how about more of the "30 days of downloads" from this period. i feel like the D/Ls have thoroughly covered19 late 1960's-1970's...THX

Dark Hollow verse

I caught that too, antonjo! Pretty cool indeed. This sounds early, like 66/67 era. I searched Deadlists and the findings were paltry for these years, but I did lock in on a version from The Matrix 12/1/66 that could be it. Follows with Betty and Dupree per Deadlists. No idea what that tune would have sounded like back then...but the tuning here in the deadair is reminiscent of Black Peter...I just think this version sounds earlier than 69/70...

Instead of lopping off the "extra minute of dead air," you might just listen real close as the answer lies within. Thanks to all the folks associated with the website for puttin this out for us. Thanks also to canyon critter and the rest for helping us all stay current.

Show

It'll be interesting at the end of the month to see who can put together the best set list from these songs to create the show that never was but will always be. Some segues will be easy. Maybe the site had a set list in mind to begin with and is giving us random pieces?

This is a great gift. Thanks to all involved.

Three straight days of Bobby. How about an epic Jerry tune/jam tomorrow? Terrapin, Eyes, Scarlet/Fire, Help/Slip/Frank, Wharf Rat? Maybe time for something white hot. Just sayin.
