We're on a mission to make a miracle every day. As a token of our appreciation for making 2010 an epic year, we're giving away a high-quality 320Kbps download every day this November. That's 30 days of Dead! Intrigued? We're also going to put your knowledge to the test and give you the chance to win some great music from the Dead.
                                                     + More Info
You know your Ables from your Bakers from your C's, but can your finely tuned ears differentiate the cosmic "comeback" tour from a spacey 70's show? Each day we'll post a free download from one of the Dead's coveted shows. Will it be from that magical night at Madison Square Garden in '93 or from way back when they were just starting to warm it up at Winterland? Is that Pigpen's harmonica we hear? Brent on keys? Step right up and try your hand.

Each day, the first person to guess the venue & date correctly will get a Road Trips of their choice. If you’re not first but you've answered correctly, you will also be automatically entered for a weekly prize of THE WARNER BROTHERS STUDIO ALBUMS VINYL BOX (EXCLUSIVE EDITION) or a FORMERLY THE WARLOCKS boxed set. Log in now and enter to win!

We haven't selected a daily winner yet. The first person to answer correctly will get to pick a Road Trips of their choice. To get started, login or register using the form above.
We haven't selected a winner for the week of 11/22 yet!

Is it a repeat if it's included as part of another daily download?
Maybe, as Buck Dharma sang, it's "Time to play B-sides"

would you rather have...

...the '76 or '93 Supplication, a Supplication Jam, or a monster Let it Grow - even if it's a repeat...I know where I stand...'What shall we say, shall we call it by a name...'

Now that one I'd get into...

...even though the Germany and England portions of the '72 tour are covered pretty well already, but France not so much.

All this Grateful Dead news, and none of it appears on the website ahead of time. Harrumph.

Winning

Hey all ~

Does anyone know how long it takes for the daily winner to be contacted about claiming his or her prize?

This has been a lot of fun and I hope for a very Jerry Christmas :)

I am hoping they choose to close out the month with an epic Morning Dew!

And the final three *might* be:

The Other One
Terrapin
Scarlet - Fire

Or at least, these are my predictions, in that order. Why not?

There was a brief discussion of claiming prizes yesterday. Seems folks are having issues. I waited until after the "5 business days" then sent a message to the Admin. The next day, I received an email through my yahoo account asking for my name, address, and choice. I returned that info, and it's been over a week since, without hearing anything from deadnet.

Wilfredtjones said that he called 1800CALDEAD and spoke to someone named Adam, and that resolved the problem. I may have to try this, too.

Yo, RainDead!

I won on day 6 and I was contacted by email a few days later (they say around 5 at the latest) and 9 days later I received my selection via UPS! If you haven't received your initial response within 5 days, email the Dead.net team webmaster or customer service.

Funny story: I waited 9 days or so and heard nothing so I decided to email customer service also, (per the suggestion of one wilfredtjones I might add). 30 seconds after I sent the email, the UPS guy dropped off my prize - no lie! That's some lightning fast customer service - lol! I emailed the Dead.net team back and they thought it was pretty funny too but I'd def suggest having faith and waiting at least 10 days after you sent your request/contact info back!

Taught us all we ever knew, We never knew so much before...

I'm sure we all have separate lives outside of Dead.net, but I wouldn't mind something similar to this 30 Days of Dead might continue in some format (even if it was once a week).

I lost a my closest friend (and touring buddy '85-'95) a year and half ago. He was the one person that I talked to almost daily about various shows. Now, with him gone, this was my small way of "keepin' in tune" with the music and continuing the conversation.

Yeah, they used to have something like that...

...where they gave away a few songs a week, it was called "The Taper's Section" as I recall. Oh wait, it's still there. Sort of.

That sounded mean, sorry. And sorry about your loss there Headntales. Seriously, the forums for the Tapers section post might fulfill your wish, albeit in a "you can't take it with you when you go" sort of way. No "name that venue" games but cool stuff gets streamed (changes weekly) and discussions ensue. If that's what you were looking for.

Thanks for the info! I'll go back and check yesterday's discussion and use your suggestions if I don't hear anything by Monday night.

And thanks to everyone who contributes to these forums. This is how we keep the music and the spirit of this band alive. We will survive!

This Mason's Children is EXACTLY what this contest is about.

I've never heard this version and I absolutely love it. Sure, Scarlet>Fire is a given favorite, but I have hundreds of versions. Now if you're talking about Terrapin, I know it's too easy but they only played the "complete" tune once, without the lyrics of course. We all have it, but not in the quality that we'd get here. Give us the rare and strange, because this month has been all about the tapers and the collectors, not the neophytes. I know Rhino wants to drum up new consumers, but the fact is that this contest has only bolstered my love of my audience tapes.

i think they should put out 6 hard drives over the next 3 years, each having every show they have in a 5 year period. We get all the shows and they get one last big payday.

Can't complain

I absolutely dug the Alligator...one of my favorite tunes and a well picked version here. The Sugaree from '80 is one of my new faves, and I don't think I'd ever heard that one before. And the classic Shake from yesterday was certainly generous. One can hope for a Scar>Fire, and I think we'll probably see it. Eyes might be nice, too. A MIA Other One would be a big surprise.
One thing I have trouble with is the unfriendly 'chops' rather than quick fadeouts at the end. They probably did that to make them a little tougher to get. Anyone know a good freeware or other program that I can use to tailor these mp3 to have fadeouts and fix those nasty cuts?
Thanks Dead.net for the free download...anxiously waiting to see what's in store upon the conclusion of the promotion...I for one would probably fall for the subscription plan, but it seems not everyone is terribly keen on that...might be a tough nut to crack for most people...make sure to announce the shows ahead of time though...what if 3 of the 4 were post '93 or something?

Audacity is audio editing freeware

that is straight forward and has effects such as fade-ins and fade-outs. Only takes a few minutes to download and install. I have used it on several of the downloads this month.

There are a number of choices for disc openers and closers. In an arrangement I've come up with...

New Speedway Boogie

Cream Puff War
Dupree's Diamond Blues
Mason's Children
My Brother Esau
So Many Roads
Althea
Cassidy ; Don't Ease Me In
----- DISC 2 -----
Truckin'
He's Gone (a)
Sugaree
China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider
The Music Never Stopped
Tennessee Jed ; Let It Grow
----- DISC 3 -----
Shakedown Street
Lost Sailor > Saint Of Circumstance
Estimated Prophet
Playing In The Band
Sugar Magnolia
----- DISC 4 -----
Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower
Dark Star
Saint Stephen
New Potato Caboose
Alligator
----- UNSORTED -----
Easy Wind (b)
He's Gone (b)

I'm sure there are other cooler ways to do it. :) And I still need to fit three more days of tracks in there.

Great arrangement cbs73!

Personally, I have been listening chronologically and I am very curious about how the last three tunes will fit in. Ultimately, I will do my best to fit these songs into the shows where they belong, even if it means a "composite" tape/CD as I have labeled them in the past when I have some soundboard material and some audience from the same night. Is that sacrilege or creative?

....yes, I DID go into shows hoping they'd bust out Mason's Children. I've always loved it.

Yeah, I love Bird Song and Scarlet->Fire, too......but the Grateful Dead wrote alot more than 30 songs. And Dew is probably out for copyright considerations.

But I'll join one of the popular choruses with three days to go....

Thanks cbs73

That's what I was getting at in my earlier post. I have them organized by the date they were given to us. I also created a playlist in iTunes where I organized them chronologically. Sort of a trip through time (haha).

Thank you, Thank you

this is probably my first post here - just got home from a trip 'home' in Tennessee and love catching up and digging on the tunes {Thanks Scott for making it so easy to catch up} and of course thanks to Dead.net! - as for making a disc I like the chronological approach but regardless they will all end up on my ipod - I have included some odds and ends from CDs that are from various shows (like Last days at the Fillmore) to these. I have only noticed one song that I already had - The Easy Wind that also appears on the Winterland NYE bonus disc. - grate stuff! -- THANKS

Please stop complaining!

What makes you guys think they are taking requests? Who's to say that they hadn't made all 30 selections prior to 11/1?

I myself have enjoyed every minute of this. I love Mason's Children, although the backing vocals were almost always way off key.

Here's how I hear it:

D G E
There are things you can replace, and others you cannot.

D G
The time has come to weigh those things.

E Bm A E
This space is getting hot, you know this space is getting hot.

Maybe it's correct, maybe it's not - first time I've tried to actually play along with this one...Anyone wanna back me up?

...don't try and play D, G, and E on the word 'There' or E, Bm, A, E on 'This Space'...not enough syllables! Your eyestalks are bound to get twisted, and your tentacles...will be tied in a knot...haha...
Yes, listen for the changes...I played along with 8-28-82 to get the changes for you here...have fun and keep on strummin'!...
