You know your Ables from your Bakers from your C's, but can your finely tuned ears differentiate the cosmic "comeback" tour from a spacey 70's show? Each day we'll post a free download from one of the Dead's coveted shows. Will it be from that magical night at Madison Square Garden in '93 or from way back when they were just starting to warm it up at Winterland? Is that Pigpen's harmonica we hear? Brent on keys? Step right up and try your hand.
Each day, the first person to guess the venue & date correctly will get a Road Trips of their choice. If you’re not first but you've answered correctly, you will also be automatically entered for a weekly prize of THE WARNER BROTHERS STUDIO ALBUMS VINYL BOX (EXCLUSIVE EDITION) or a FORMERLY THE WARLOCKS boxed set. I bought a CD from America today. Europe '72. The shipping was £2.75. That's less than $5. To England (Europe). God bless Amazon Marketplace :D
Give me a Morning, give me a dew!
The penultimate UJB was great. I just love saying that word.
...and I'll personally take advantage of the list you've compiled!
Here beside the rising tide *-*
these problems, about the subs & bonus discs...
For some people, if a bonus disc exists -- it must be available in perpetuity. Of course, this way lies madness, because it's essentially a demand that *everything* must always be kept in print.
Now we're lucky enough to be talking about this band, from whom, for the most part, everything has almost always been available. But I can't see how there's any obligation, financial or moral, for the band or their agents to always make everything that has ever been available, available now and forever.
It's a rough thing about life, sometimes you do actually lose when you snooze. I don't expect the Dead to fix that for me.
Oh and I want the sub discount to be bigger too. Well, of course you do -- me too. Every extra dollar I keep for me is better.
But again, get real about it. I could easily see "no discount" having been considered. Many people are going to agree they don't want to buy them all anyway, unless they're assured in advance each show meets their criteria of worth.
But the real value of the sub for some people is to be assured they won't miss any, even if they decide to ignore the website, Almanac, facebook, etc. There are actually quite a few folks who are damnsure we *will* buy every single one.
So this whole thing, it's really just a small diversification of the offerings from dead.$$$ and I really don't see how any of us are getting the short end of the stick.
A sweet Dire Wolf would be Awesome!
There's a really good book on the history of record companies over the last thirty years, specifically looking at how they have really goofed up in the digital age. I was able to get a copy at my local library. A very good read, which would also shed a little light on some of the questions being asked here.
I was really hoping for a sweet Black Peter when I saw the clue, but that debuted late '69. Thought to myself that Loser would be phenomenal, but that was introduced in '71.
Aargh! That era had some fantastic stuff. No more Sugar Mag type of stuff, please...
Here are some of my ideas of the games we will seen played for the 2011 RT subscription:
RT #1 for 2011- collection of the 'best' from 5/5-9/77
RT #2 for 2011- full show from '67 or '68
RT #3 for 2011- spring tour or summer tour collection, spring tour probably from '91 or '93 (because the fall tour '79 RT was the first RT released)
RT #4 for 2011- another full show from '70s
Reach down from Rock n Roll heaven, REACH DOWN I SAY, and make 'em post that whole big ass Drums>Space>GDTRFB from 7/5/95 to close the month. It'd mean a lot to me brother, why I'd even buy that damn subscription - that is the miracle that I need tomorrow.
Sounds pretty good too ;) Gonna have to listen to it twice, to see why the two SBDs at archive have such different timings on D>S.
What I want to know is,
Where does the time go?
Peace luv and all that is organic.
May there be light where there was once none!
May there be music where there was once silence!!
...or whatever they call themselves hasn't arranged for a European office to distribute this stuff overseas. They must have some kind of business presence over there already, and the Eurofreaks have always had to suffer from exorbitant shipping costs, difficulties with exchange rates and credit card purchasing.
Sigh. The irony of having to pay so much more, even for concerts that HAPPENED THERE lmao.
...but would be a good closer, and that '95 one was the very last one.
Great, now I'm all depressed.

Acoustic encore to an electric set.......nice!!
than later with this subscription thing!! I do agree with Helena that the info is a bit vague, on the bonus disc, ect and I certainly hope they will still offer them seperately ( did anyone get an answer to this?) But I just feel it is kinda sucky for our counterparts overseas to get sacked with exhorborant shipping charges. as a rule of thumb I don't read magazines or newspapers, 2 much disinformation
thanks for all the tunes, nothing but hap-hap-happy! always my fav band
What will the final song of the 30 Days be? They're saying it's from the 70s...
Scarlet Begonias? Blues For Allah (would be amazing)? Eyes of the World? Tennessee Jed? Ship of Fools? Mississippi Half Step? I only wish it could be 60 Days of The Dead!!!!
thing is, this isn't from an acoustic set ;)
...but it is Very early on, though not the 1st one played.
just sayin', the ability to travel back in time fifteen hours or so would be hilarious.
Thanks for pointing that out, VisionsofHorus, I love that book - I'll have to read over that part again while listening to the track, again. :D
I’m pretty selective on which releases I buy (not just for GD, but for the many other artists I love), so I wouldn’t want to plunk down money for shows that, otherwise, I’d probably pass on. As for this phrase: “we know how much you love Bonus Discs.” I’m not really sure I do, as a matter of fact. Take the previously released RTs. Say I can’t afford, or don’t want, the current release, but a few months later, I can and do. Why should there be a “bonus disc” that disappears just because I didn’t buy it right away? In other words, if the music is there, make it available for purchase.
Attics had a big gap (dammit), so did Box of Rain. Brokedown has a two year gap. Dire Wolf is spread out pretty evenly through the years even if it wasn't as frequent some years. High Time started in concerts in '69, Black Peter and Cumberland did too...hmmm...Speedway has a twenty year gap...FOtD has an almost two year gap, surprisingly...Candyman, could be...no Brokedowns in '76 though...OK, I'm bored now.
Dire Wolf or Candyman (or something else since "consistently" is open to interpretation LOL). A sweet Dire Wolf works for me, well, anything works for me.
Great, great song choice. Whatever song they pick tomorrow is gonna be hard pressed to top this one.
Don't know if anyone knows, but that Uncle John's Band is actually from the show Phil spoke about in his book... In this same show, there is a Dark Star > Spanish Jam > Lovelight that featured members of (if not all members) of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, and The Allman Brothers. You can CLEARLY hear Peter Green here, and Duane trading off vocals with Pig during lovelight! As soon as I read that in Phil's book I IMMEDIATELY ran home and searched information on it...
1970-02-11 is indeed the magical night!
Yea, to be honest, it's just a prod toward Demonoid to grab the bonus disc, rather than pay up-front for the whole thing. Lack of clarity is certainly not going to get a lot of people to pony up the cash without knowing anything about what's coming.
Personally, I've bought roughly every other RT set, since there are quite a few that don't really interest me. For a good discount, I might take a chance, but I'd really prefer knowing what shows they will be (or what periods, if not full shows).
casey jones to wrap it up
Great, great song choice. Whatever song they pick tomorrow is gonna be hard pressed to top this one.
"I can see how knowing the shows would be important, but you don't know what you get in a magazine, either."
That's not a good analogy if only because of the money involved. When I do subscribe to a magazine I have a pretty good idea of what's going to be in it, issue to issue. These Road Trips releases have been all over the place as far as pieces of shows from different venues vs highlights of shows from a single run vs most of a show but the show is rearranged so as to fit on fewer discs. Additionally, with a subscription to most any magazine there is a HUGE discount over the single issue price.
Just a verification in print of "whole shows" like what's-his-name is supposed to have said in that Golden Road interview (a transcript of the interview would be cool, actually) would be helpful. An explanation of how they plan on fitting thirty songs on that bonus disc too, The chatter in the email and on the store page is disturbingly vague.
It's not a big deal. I'll wait for the individual releases and pay for shipping. I'm sure I'll come across the Blessed Holy Bonus Disc somewhere if it should prove to be irresistible.
"Brokedown Palace", by process of elimination.
I'm waaaayyy good with that! ; )
I'm actually surprised that they didn't include I Need a Miracle; given the wordage in the original announcement for this promotion ... this fact is a miracle in itself!!
It's been fun!!
Thanks for the free dead like in the good old days. before it was all about the money. There was a love for the music and making the fans happy... I missed a lot of the songs do to dead.net not working anybody else have this problem too.and of all the songs I missed China cat sunflower. this song means a lot to me as it was my BF song who died at a dead show in 95 do to cancer. that was his wish to be at a show when he passed.
sure, i guess there's a quantum uncertainty
this has been so much fun, i think it should continue into December even without the prizes!! otherwise, might have to get some Heads together to continue playing this guessing game...
Well, I know the entire thing with roadtrips subscription shipping is sucky, they did all these downloads why don't they offer all the subscirption to people in other countries as downloads? Include the free disc on dlownload and email when download is ready and let people download the artwork, stories too- that way evryone still has the music. Otherwise like I said on the other post earlier, someone in the USA could just order for their friend and ship overseas minus the $180, otherwise it seems awfully high for shipping, I could send you a set of drums for that price (well maybe) you get the idea
Thanks for looking into the shipping issue. This seems to be a problem similar to that with the last Winterland box set. It seems that it's the same heads here (including myself) who are raising the issue; at least you have faithful customers. :-)
Yeah I guess the "discount" is pretty ludicrous. The discount for pre-paid should be something worthwhile, like knock off $1 or $2 in addition to the shipping.
I can see how knowing the shows would be important, but you don't know what you get in a magazine, either.
What I'd be interested in: a guarantee that they are all at least three discs apiece, because the math doesn't work out so well if they are two disc.
I love your Turtle camping, he is super freakin AWESOME Still wondering what they will do for day #30
:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
"don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to..."
awesome electric set, followed by a "wooden" UJB encore - only the Dead could pull that off!
As long as the RT subscription is fair game, what's the deal with a 30-track bonus disc? Should we assume that it's a bonus RT set? The Dead didn't do many tracks that would fit 30 to a disc.
Anyone else think that the bonus disc might just be the same songs here. 30 Days of The Dead and 30 songs on the bonus disc. I'm also wondering if the bonus disc is going to be a data disc or dvd of these mp3's.
On the wall of the garden a legend did say: "No one may come here since no one may stay."
In theory, it is a fine idea to suggest that they offer the subscription as downloads to people in countries outside the US. The reality is that Rhino (both here on Dead.net and also on Rhino.com) will not sell downloads to customers outside the US. This was discussed on here a while ago. For the full "We don't do that" text, search on Rhino.com. The reasons behind their decision have never been made clear to us, the customers.
Hmm, could they be offering as a bonus disc the songs they've been giving away? That'd be quite dumb; but they have been known to do dumb stuff before. All they say is "an exclusive 30-song bonus disc, available only by subscribing."
I love it!!! Not a bad way to start out my fifth decade! Coming up on the 31st anniversary of my first show! 12-1-79 Stanley Theater in Pittsburg! A birthday present. It's been a hell of a ride! This month has been a blessing, thanks to all...
Could the 30 song bonus disc be the 30 free song downloads during this November?
It could be a data disc.
That would be lame, especially if they were 320kbps MP3s.
another jem and only 1 download left. what will we do? thank you deadnet.
Inspiration, move me brightly.....
Since there is no comment section for this RT subscription idea, I guess I'll ask this here...
It states in the e-mail the bonus disc has "music drawn from one of the next two Road Trips releases, sent to you along with RT V4 N3". Does this mean the bonus disc will just be repeat material? Perhaps these won't be full shows and the bonus disc is the leftovers? Can Rhino marketing be any less clear? I have spent a lot of money over the years on this band and continue to do so, however, I like to know what I am buying prior to purchase.
Can someone in the powers-that-be department please chime in? Thanks!
...I read it from someone who kindly posted it. Here it is again:
INTRODUCING ROAD TRIPS 2011 SUBSCRIPTIONS
Just think of it as summer love in the spring, fall and winter. It's true - you can now order all four of the upcoming 2011 Road Trips releases (with FREE SHIPPING on all four sets) in one fell swoop. Plus we know how much you love Bonus Discs so as a special thank you for signing up for a Road Trips 2011 Subscription, you'll get an exclusive bonus disc, with music drawn from one of the next two Road Trips releases, sent to you along with Road Trip Vol. 4 No. 3. This will all be previously unreleased, top-notch Dead, mastered in HDCD, and will ONLY be available to subscribers of the Road Trips Series! Get it now.
I have a couple questions after reading it. 1.) It does say the bonus disc will contain music drawn from one of the 1st two volumes of RT under the subscription. So that means they won't be given us 30 days of Dead as the bonus disc, right? 2.) How in the world could they fit 30 Tracks of GD music on 1 cd? (Unless it's DVD)
I guess I also wonder if they will wiggle a little and let us know what they're thinking of releasing. I am a little nervous that about what they're going to release - I trust it won't be mainly post '93...
12-1-79 was you first show? Nice. Always loved the second set He's Gone>Gloria Jam>C.C. Rider.
