We're on a mission to make a miracle every day. As a token of our appreciation for making 2010 an epic year, we're giving away a high-quality 320Kbps download every day this November. That's 30 days of Dead! Intrigued? We're also going to put your knowledge to the test and give you the chance to win some great music from the Dead.
                                                     + More Info
You know your Ables from your Bakers from your C's, but can your finely tuned ears differentiate the cosmic "comeback" tour from a spacey 70's show? Each day we'll post a free download from one of the Dead's coveted shows. Will it be from that magical night at Madison Square Garden in '93 or from way back when they were just starting to warm it up at Winterland? Is that Pigpen's harmonica we hear? Brent on keys? Step right up and try your hand.

Each day, the first person to guess the venue & date correctly will get a Road Trips of their choice. If you’re not first but you've answered correctly, you will also be automatically entered for a weekly prize of THE WARNER BROTHERS STUDIO ALBUMS VINYL BOX (EXCLUSIVE EDITION) or a FORMERLY THE WARLOCKS boxed set. Log in now and enter to win!

Silly Me, I Had to Work

I couldn't download the Nov. 2 song (Dark Star) because I was working all day (and then again all evening at my second job). If anyone is feeling generous, please email it to sethmerritt37@gmail.com. Thanks!

I am going to say that on my live shows, Friend of the Devil is played more then anything in those days. It even came out in 1979

where were all these new posters last week? Thanks for the downloads, congratulations dstache, well earned, after participating in the download yesterday, I noticed a few things, new song didn't come up till noon est, 9 am pst, lots of traffic at first, due to prizes involved, it's to be expected when "free" goods are involved, the devoted who have been here know how the site works and should have a slight advantage, but that is also to be expected, if you sign in to win, you are missing the point. Good luck to all and enjoy the music, free dead, you just can't beat that.

How do you get 'em?

Okay, new here. They take down the earlier days daily and don't post the new one until 9am Pacific? That's why I can't "sign in?"

Thanks

first, you must register, then sign in, then follow the instructions, there are only 4 steps, register, sign in, click the download button, (save it to your files), make your guess of date and venue, that's it. download seems to only stay up for about 12 hrs. the download won't be avialable till noon or so est, 9am pst got to give them a chance to get up and get to work. Hope this helps and be patient, lots of heads on the site at first trying to win the road trips.

Congratulations on selecting the right date for the '69 Dark Star.

Is FOTD going to be today's featured song? I must have missed where this was announced.

For you new folks that are unfamiliar with this site, the challenge instigator will attempt to post the new daily song, along with the choice of playing a stream or downloading an mp3, around noon eastern time on the US east coast (11 central, 10 mtn, 9 pacific).
Remember to be patient and have fun guessing.

Is there a way to get the previous day's mp3 if you forgot to grab it?

Positive Experience

I feel bad for the folks having issues. I just wish the criticisms wouldn't be so harsh.
I just want to share my (mostly) positive experience with this promotion. I got an e-mail on 11/1 from the Grateful Dead Newsletter announcing it. In that e-mail, it mentioned that the songs would be posted at 9:00 AM PT. I got on the site at 2:30 ET on a MacBook using Firefox and was able to vote and download the first song with no problems. Yesterday, I tried shortly after 12:30 and had issues downloading. It choked once, and then I got a partial of Dark Star. Downloaded again at around 2:45 and got the full song.
Thanks for everything you do, and thanks for the free music. I'm willing to "pay" with a few hiccups for free stuff!

Can someone send me yesterdays?

I really want to get all of these, but of course after one day I already spaced. It looks like there is no way to get the previous days download. Can someone send it to me, or put it somewhere I can get at it?

while its nice of the band

while its nice of the band to kick its fans a whopping one whole song each day, it breaks my heart that after years of us fans doing our very best to preserve the deads live recordings in the best quality we could, from reel to reel tapes, maxell Xl2-s or better, to DAT then CDR's when they were $7 and $8 a piece, SHN, FLAC etc that the music is being dispensed out and officially touted now as "a high-quality 320Kbps download".
remember when we debated endlessly where to put track indexes in those early days of converting the DATs to CDR?
"high quality" mp3's, complete with the gaps in between songs.
boy, that will make for a great china > rider transition. i'm guessing things like that will be single tracked? oh, nope. they faded yesterdays dark star > st stephen out as it transitioned from one to the other.
remember when (last year maybe? 2 years ago?) they used to allow you to download the entire 20 or 30 songs they posted each week when they had that terrific feature/page where someone (Lemieux?) gave a great discussion on songs, and posted them.? wish that had never went away

the archive calendar

Could it be possible to click on a specific date on the archive calendar above and get a mp3 that you might have missed? For example, clicking on Novermber 1st allows you to download new speedway boogie or clicking on Nov. 2nd allows a download of Darkstar?

...and respectfully request that the download links be maintained for at least a couple of days, so that everyone can enjoy them. In any case, a great idea you guys have here. My only quibble is with the execution. Many thanks.

Requests...

I hope we can get a nice, big Lovelight in this series.

That reminds me: back when the Taper's Section stuff was downloadable, there were some really good selections, something like 9 GB worth. They should sell some of the stuff that they've put up for streaming, maybe on DVDs of MP3 files. It's not as cleaned up as the official releases, but there are some interesting curiosities.

Though I'm grateful for the songs, I support the suggestion of a FLAC-option.
As a non-US citizen, identifying the date and venue is useless :-(

in all fairness

It would be more fair to randomly choose one of the deadheads with the correct answer rather than the first person to answer correctly. This would avoid the problem of too many people trying to log on at the same time and clogging up the works. The contest, as it is now favors those with a better internet connection.

This is one of the many reasons why the GD are the coolest band in the land....Yes they like to make money but the Dead have always pit their fans ahead of profits....to bad todays bands are so fuckin; clueless.

Darkstar

Reich: Well then if we wanted to talk about "Dark Star", could you say anything about where it comes from?

Garcia: You gotta remember that you and I are talking about two different "Dark Stars." You're talking about the "Dark Star" which you have heard formalized on a record, and I'm talking about the "Dark Star" which I have heard in each performance as a completely improvised piece over a long period of time. So I have a long continuum of "Dark Stars" which range in character from each other to real different extremes. "Dark Star" has meant, while I'm playing it, almost as many things as I can sit here and imagine, so all I can do is talk about "Dark Star" as a playing experience.

Reich: Well, yeah, talk about it a little.

Garcia: I can't. It talks about itself.

Anyone else...

...having problems downloading or playing the full song is it just me? Here, I only get the first 5 mins or so and when I d/l it, I'm missing the last few seconds. How long is the track supposed to run? BTW, I guessed Winterland, Oct. '69.
