We're on a mission to make a miracle every day. As a token of our appreciation for making 2010 an epic year, we're giving away a high-quality 320Kbps download every day this November. That's 30 days of Dead! Intrigued? We're also going to put your knowledge to the test and give you the chance to win some great music from the Dead.
                                                     + More Info
You know your Ables from your Bakers from your C's, but can your finely tuned ears differentiate the cosmic "comeback" tour from a spacey 70's show? Each day we'll post a free download from one of the Dead's coveted shows. Will it be from that magical night at Madison Square Garden in '93 or from way back when they were just starting to warm it up at Winterland? Is that Pigpen's harmonica we hear? Brent on keys? Step right up and try your hand.

Each day, the first person to guess the venue & date correctly will get a Road Trips of their choice. If you’re not first but you've answered correctly, you will also be automatically entered for a weekly prize of THE WARNER BROTHERS STUDIO ALBUMS VINYL BOX (EXCLUSIVE EDITION) or a FORMERLY THE WARLOCKS boxed set. Log in now and enter to win!
                                                   - Less Info
We haven't selected a daily winner yet. The first person to answer correctly will get to pick a Road Trips of their choice. To get started, login or register using the form above.
We haven't selected a winner for the week of 11/22 yet!

Easy Comparison

"Easy Wind" from Winterland 12/31/70 is the lead-off track on the "New Year's Eves at Winterland" bonus disc that accompanied some orders of the Closing of Winterland CD's or DVD's.

"Easy Wind" from Springer's Ballroom, Portland, OR 1/16/70 is, as others have noted, a bonus track on the expanded HDCD version of Workingman's Dead.

The "easywinda.mp3" [sic] posted yesterday is from Springer's Ballroom, Portland, OR 1/16/70. Pigpen's vocal flub circa 1:00 is identical on both sources. (It also bears remarkable similarity to the vocal flub at the same juncture -- the second half of the first verse -- in "Easy Wind" from Winterland 10/24/69.)

God Bless Ron.

Best to all,

Jeffer, I wish it was Red

Jeffer, I wish it was Red Vest, but I measure that Easy Wind almost a minute shorter than this one. I had my fingers crossed for Oahu, I would love a soundboard version.

I am laughing at myself, Now

I am laughing at myself, Now I know what a wav file is, my edit is playing as the sound track of a non existent xvid movie. The edit was great, the file was the opposite. Thanks Critter, you are a sanity saver!

Well, if it IS Springer Inn.....

.....then the banter and Cryptical teases still make it a unique snapshot, even with the Workingman's bonus track (which is the exact same length, but I haven't heard it recently enough to discern any musical similarities there might be ~ I remember it was pretty scorching, and THIS one is pretty scorching...).

I've always thought the studio version was pretty darn hot. The Playin' on Ace always gets the credit for capturing live Dead energy in the studio ~ I think Easy Wind does, too.

Definitely not the Family Dog 8-30-69, Pappy, but thanks for name-dropping (date-dropping?) it, I love that one, very post-Aoxomoxoa-sounding version (if that makes any sense ~ in a word: organ).

Thanks once again to everyone involved! Impeccable choices thus far!

Thank you everyone for your

Thank you everyone for your album friendlier versions of today's song. Having never edited or uploaded a song, it took me longer, but here is my version, complete with the ending "thank you" and a nice fade out, running 8:10 in length. Audacity wouldn't let me export it as an mp3, but as a wav instead (I don't know the difference). Here's mine for the practice, but I'll likely use one of your's. Again thanks all.

Someone grabbed my first

Someone grabbed my first choice already, so i put in 11-1-69. If you listen to the dialogue at the end (always entertaining), you can hear Jerry and Bob and it is clearly said Ladies' Choice on the next tune.

stage banter

There is extra stage banter at the end of this file due to the etiquette on how to store consecutive songs. If a song is not a set closer and has a song following, all stage banter and artist/song introductions reside at the end of the song just played. This allows the listener to skip the chat and get to the music if you want, but the complete show is there for archival purposes. Talk is only included at the start of a song if it is the set opener.

Editing

I think Sam is not lost in those Northwest woods.

I am cutting the end off this download, then putting the tidier version into iTunes after dumping the first version.

Not because it helps me guess more quickly based on correct approximate song lengths (when does a Dead song really begin or end?), but because it doesn't require editing to make for a useful album of music, please release versions that don't have endless emptiness on either end of the song. I'll be you best friend forever.

'Kay? Thanks!

Why the kindness?

Although I really appreciate all of the free downloads I tend to think this is a test run for the future marketing of downloads that won't be free. I've gleefuly been the test rat before in such, shall we say, experiments, and gleefully particpate again! 5 down, 25 doses to go. No turn unstoned in this frontier.
The faster we go the rounder we get!

Not complaining but...

...when I was first listened to the Springer's Inn version I swore that was the one but then I saw that it was previously released as a bonus track on the Workingman's reissue. Since I thought that these tracks were going to be all previously unreleased I spent some time listening to quite a bit more Wind before I circled back here and really listened to the undeniable similarities.

If they post the wrong answer. Easy Wind is definitely 1/16/70.

1970- confusion central

Pre-digi days were sometimes confusing. I clearly remember about 70% of my analog Dead shows from 1970 having post-its/notes everywhere noting "wrong date, really 2-11-70...etc...From around 22 shows i have on analog from 1970 perhaps 5-6 are genuinely the correct date....lol....and so it goes...thx for all!!!!! I'm so confused...

Great track, but I'm ever so puzzled...When I listened to it off the website, the song proper ends around 8 minutes and then there's a minute or so of post-song noise (as has been noted by others). But the track as downloaded to my computer goes great guns all the way to 9:40 and then cuts out dead in the middle of Jerry's playing. What's going on????

I think I got it this time

They made it tough this time with extra stage banter at the end of the track. I think this show was just before I was born. My birthday is 1/29/1970.

IMPROVED DL PERFORMANCE

Thanks so very much for improved DL performance today. It might be due to the much smaller file size than PITB but it worked first time today.

File size: 22.5MB Playing Time: 9:51 (includes "dead space).

The space between........

Pigpen was the Man! Sure wish I had been around in those days.

Its a small thing... but I've seen a couple comments concerning the space at the end of Easy Wind and folks who don't like to roll with it. Just a difference in opinion here but I always love recordings that include those spaces as it puts me right there at the show again..... the crowd banter, band tuning, cheering & clapping......just close your eyes and your right there again.....Alpine Valley, Oakland Coliseum, Eugene, the Greek.......

What a beautiful gift this music is.
