We're on a mission to make a miracle every day. As a token of our appreciation for making 2010 an epic year, we're giving away a high-quality 320Kbps download every day this November. That's 30 days of Dead! Intrigued? We're also going to put your knowledge to the test and give you the chance to win some great music from the Dead.
                                                     + More Info
You know your Ables from your Bakers from your C's, but can your finely tuned ears differentiate the cosmic "comeback" tour from a spacey 70's show? Each day we'll post a free download from one of the Dead's coveted shows. Will it be from that magical night at Madison Square Garden in '93 or from way back when they were just starting to warm it up at Winterland? Is that Pigpen's harmonica we hear? Brent on keys? Step right up and try your hand.

Each day, the first person to guess the venue & date correctly will get a Road Trips of their choice. If you’re not first but you've answered correctly, you will also be automatically entered for a weekly prize of THE WARNER BROTHERS STUDIO ALBUMS VINYL BOX (EXCLUSIVE EDITION) or a FORMERLY THE WARLOCKS boxed set. Log in now and enter to win!

We haven't selected a daily winner yet. The first person to answer correctly will get to pick a Road Trips of their choice. To get started, login or register using the form above.
We haven't selected a winner for the week of 11/22 yet!

Surprised

I'm surprised they went with something that had already been released. This "Easy Wind" was on the Closing of Winterland bonus disc. I ruled it out simply because it had already been released, albeit in a limited capacity. Very sneaky...

Yeah, I guess you'd call this barely previously released. Of course, the bonus disc didn't include the banter, so this should synch up really nicely now with the Cryptical -> Other One that Dave posted on Taper's Section a few years ago (when that was downloadable).

Gotta love 16-track '70. Can't wait to see what the weekend brings....!

I'm Sorry this Ain't 12/31/70

If you listen to the archive'd audience recording of this, it's not even CLOSE to 12/31/70, words are sung that aren't even sung in the dload version, timing is way differerent, etc. etc....that's a wrong date for sure. Somebody hittin' the sauce over there in Dead.Net land ????;-)My guess was Springer's Too (Oregon)...there's no doubt that's what it is!

If you are having trouble finding the links, I've posted them at least 4 times already just read the comments on these pages right here and you'll find em.

Surely a mistake

I'm with cloverman on this being from the Portland show on 16th Jan 1970. To my ears you can hear TC (and he left the band on 24th Jan 1970). You can also hear a cryptical tune-up at the end (they didn't follow Easy Wind with Cryptical>TOO on 31st Dec 1970, but they certainly did on 16th Jan 1970). As well as the link to archive posted by cloverman, you can hear this Easy Wind as a bonus track on the re-mastered and re-released Workingman’s Dead

two different versions were posted

Clever detectives at Eurotraders have found that there were 2 versions of Easy Wind put up online: a and b ..

Compare these

http://www.dead.net/fetchFile.php?file=/sites/deadbeta.rhino.com/30daysmp3/easywinda.mp3

OR

http://www.dead.net/fetchFile.php?file=/sites/deadbeta.rhino.com/30daysmp3/easywindb.mp3

it seems they might have made the link to 'a' but used the date from 'b'

got to laugh

Great Detective Work-Cosmic Badger

Easy Wind (a) is from 1-16-70 Springers. Looks like Cosmic Badger nailed it with second (b) listing.

SIMPLE FIX. There should be two winners on this one. Plus one for the Badger.

It was not me who worked this out. It was someone at the Eurotraders site in Europe, who worked it out and shared it there

Those aren't the only ones you can find. Someone over at dead.net was planning ahead but hasn't put in the proper precautions to prevent, uh, sneak previews.

My Compliments to the EuroTraders

Nice to have the Eurotraders doing some serious "gumshoe" detective work.

Too bad the GD won't let the international fans participate in the contest.

I agree with a previous post regarding the reason for the "free DL" promotion. It won't be long before we see at least 30 new shows for paid downloads. Maybe they will make both versions a & b available! I am sure they will gladly accept payment in Euros.

Good Luck Today to All!

Best Wishes-Jimmy the Cop

Bonus track!

The Psychic Badger does it again! Amazing - Dr. Rhino sneaked in a bonus track. Easy Wind A and Easy Wind B are indeed two completely different animals. The A version was the official download, the B version lurked somewhere in the background and the Badger has told us where to find it. Unfortunately Dr. Rhino appeared to confuse himself by awarding the prize (for the official A version) to someone who gave the date of the B version. Of course it is possible that Yellowguy did in fact download the B version somehow. My advice - use the Badger's link(s) and grab 'em both.

I am amazed how many people are posting that they cannot find the link, can someone post a link etc. etc. while the workaholic Canyon Critter posts the links about five times a day to help everybody. Obviously some people do not browse and read the comments that are there on the screen right before their eyes. If you have a problem, chances are that you are not alone and chances are that someone has posted a solution to the problem. Seek and you shall find.

12/31/70?

I'm with you guys. I listened to 1/16/70 side-by-side with the download. I don't get it. Unless of course the source we have for 1/16 is really 12/31.

Excellent detective work

The gentleman from the western slope indeed has discovered a distinct difference between the NYE recording and the Portland version. 12/31/70 moves along at a quicker pace upon review. I continued my personal "0 for 5" streak by jumping into 1971 on this pick...

I have just come on board for the new game. Where is the download? I don't see it anywhere. Perhaps it's only good for one day. Any help would be very appreciated. Usually there is a link or something to click on. Right now I don't see a thing. Thank you.

Can't find actual download link

I'm usually pretty net savvy, but I can't see any actual link on this page. I do see a paragraph about Easy Wind with some description, and I am logged in, but I'll be damned if I can see anything leads to a download. Can someone clarify this for me? I've tried it in Firefox and IE.

opener?

I'm guessing 12-7-69, Filmore west. But with that intro, sounds like it could be an opener for set 1 or 2? Alot easier than yesterday's PITB, that song was only played 1000 times or so, this one, not so much. Thanks for another tasty bit of history, Jerry and Pig shine on this one.

Pig Was Sweet wasn't he?

I think most guessed this one rather quickly. I love me some Pigpen. Clearly a Cryptical tease at the end of it, and it's funny but if you listen to the song there is about 1 minute of banter before they even start Cryptical.

Man is this fun, I'm loving it.

Re: link to edited version

wccbzz

I am googling how to edit with audacity, when I figure out how to chop, I'll google making a song available for download or linking or whatever. So much I don't know, but trying to learn on the fly.

I'm sure there is someone who already has these talents, and can accomplish the task more quickly.
