We're on a mission to make a miracle every day. As a token of our appreciation for making 2010 an epic year, we're giving away a high-quality 320Kbps download every day this November. That's 30 days of Dead! Intrigued? We're also going to put your knowledge to the test and give you the chance to win some great music from the Dead.
                                                     + More Info
You know your Ables from your Bakers from your C's, but can your finely tuned ears differentiate the cosmic "comeback" tour from a spacey 70's show? Each day we'll post a free download from one of the Dead's coveted shows. Will it be from that magical night at Madison Square Garden in '93 or from way back when they were just starting to warm it up at Winterland? Is that Pigpen's harmonica we hear? Brent on keys? Step right up and try your hand.

Each day, the first person to guess the venue & date correctly will get a Road Trips of their choice. If you’re not first but you've answered correctly, you will also be automatically entered for a weekly prize of THE WARNER BROTHERS STUDIO ALBUMS VINYL BOX (EXCLUSIVE EDITION) or a FORMERLY THE WARLOCKS boxed set. Log in now and enter to win!
                                                   - Less Info
We haven't selected a daily winner yet. The first person to answer correctly will get to pick a Road Trips of their choice. To get started, login or register using the form above.
We haven't selected a winner for the week of 11/22 yet!

Canyon Critter: Deadhead of the Month

The MVP goes to Canyon Critter for his helpfulness in posting the links to the daily downloads. I am not in any way complaining about Dead.net. You can ask my kids and they'll tell you nothing riles me up like ingratitude. People who complain about free stuff should be forced to listen to 30 different versions of Samba in the Rain. Wait, that might be a bit much.

Mmmmm.... Sugaree.....

A good Sugaree is as good as it gets for me. I'm not enough of an orthodox Deadhead to even guess a venue or date, but it's interesting that the feel (I'm listening for the first time) has that six-eight interior rhythm like Crazy Fingers. This is so choice. Thank you, PTB!

Don't know if anyone else has answered marinus' question yet but on my second attempt I got a complete download of today's Sugaree:

size: 23.4 MB (24,011 KB)
length: 10:14

Keep trying, friends & neighbors -- it's worth it.

If you are having trouble with downloads...

If you can't seem to get the whole download, make sure to delete the original file and clear your browsers "cache" before you try to download again.

And I appreciate all the thanks, I'm just doing this because I know what it's like not to be able to get the music. Really all you should be thanking Dead.Net and The Grateful Dead, I'm just a peon.

Server and delivery issues

Perseverance and persistance has kept my iTunes folder complete so far on this project, despite the poor delivery service that dead.net has been able to provide. So far, the only "miracle every day" is to receive a complete download on the first try.

It's more than ironic that a promotion that is obviously designed to create traffic for downloaded music to this site succeeds more in illustrating to the core customer base that dead.net is currently unable to manage the level of traffic they've created themselves. Hopefully they'll solve the problem before December and the Xmas buying season rolls around.

Happy Saturday, Happy Friday!

Your 3-26-88, Happy Friday, I suspect is a fairly close guess. It's not that one, because that Hampton show and that Hell In a Bucket-> Sugaree are burned into my memory. But it sounds like the same general space.
I could be wrong, but I don't think this is anywhere near 80-81.

By the way, there is no way this 84 or beyond. Listen to Jerry's voice in spring 87 and we know what he sounded like in 84/85 (the heroin frog).

worth the effort

It took a bunch of tries, but I managed to score the whole Sugaree.
Many thanks to all involved in putting this out there.
Thanks to Canyon Critter for easing me toward a complete Playing in the band. I found out too late that the version I downloaded fell a couple of minutes short.

Enjoy the music.

Unreleased track - not!

Why did I waste my time and download allowance on 2 Easy Winds? 16 Jan 70 is a bonus track on Workingman's and 31 Dec 70 is on the New Year's Eves at Winterland bonus CD - so I've already got them!

This is So Awesomely Epic!!!!!!!

Thanks once again Canyon Critter!!!

"Empty Cache" made it work for me. So simple. I thought all the resets I did included that.

I can get flow now, even with the Playin' !

The Cache is the main trick for me!

Wow. It's going to be a grate month!

Talk about thanksgiving.

I guessed 10/17/90

I guessed 10/17/90 in Essen, West Germany. I have an AUD that sounded eerily similar. I was surprised that there was such a good version from 1990. I hope I'm right.

Finally Found the Answer (Redux)

It took me forever, but I finally figured out that this "Sugaree" is from a show for which no soundboard currently circulates. If all goes well, I hope to remedy that deficiency later this month. For now, all I can say about the city where this was played is that it is half-dioscuric.

Best to all,

Very strange

Every time I have tried to download a song, the little download window says how much I have downloaded of a file of unknown size and (as is normal with an unknown file size) it shows no progress bar. At around my 15th attempt to get the whole of this song, the download window said how much I had got of a 23.4MB file and showed a progress bar and also told me how much time was remaining until the download was complete. It went right to the end and I got the whole enchilada. This is the first time I have seen that "normal complete" download window in six painful days of seemingly endless attempts to get full versions. Happily I can report that my persistence has paid off (so far) and I have got full versions of everything.

Hint: The "Timestamp..." bit of the address is seemingly not needed - right click on the download button, click the "Add to favorites..." button, then right click on the "Favorite" and click "Properties". There the full address can be seen and the "Timestamp... " bit (after .mp3) can be deleted if you choose. Click on your "Favorite" as necessary until you get what you want. That is easier than always having to click on the download button on this site. Clear? I hope so.

today's tune

I guess this is 1982 vintage. Sounds similar to the tone Jerry was copping at Alpine that year. But, I know it can't be that one 'cause that Sugaree was bracketed by Music Never Stopped. I'll go out on a limb and say early 1982. I'd guess Feb./March but I won't make it official since I already won on the 4th.

Yeah, but you know, allfalldown....

....there were good nights and bad, the frog wasn't always there (Greek '84, Richmond '85, Hampton '86, Capital Center '87, Hampton '88.......there's some sweet singing in there....).

After checking the AUDs for

After checking the AUDs for 10-26-80, it makes me wonder if the one on Dead Set (2-disc version) is even from that date.

What is notable for me about this version is the drumstick tapping (?) at the beginning, and then how it gets right to business with the drums. It's a pretty tight performance, without a lot of flair in the guitar/bass at the start. Jerry's voice sounds young-ish, not at all like in 87 and later. Brent's voice sounds young as well, and the keyboard/organ is understated.

hey

Anyone figure this out? I think we have been had. But in a good way. I think the only possible answer, and I have spend a couple of hours today trying to figure this out, is 10/13/80, a show that only partially circulates on archive, and Sugaree is NOT one of the circulating songs. I sampled some Sugarees from 88, 89 and 90, and there is NO way this version is from those years. My gut instinct was 1980. I have looked at 79, 81 and 82 as well. Someone said earlier that they thought it was from a show that only circulated on AUD, but there isn't even an AUD with this song on it from 10/13/80.

It will be interesting to see...

Now that we all know the "answer" to Easy Wind B, I wonder if they'll still use that song in the contest.
I'm sure some folks have figured out how to get the others. I hope they don't use the info. to try and win the daily contests. That would be "Un-Dead like."

I have encountered no problems d/ling these tunes but I have noticed that the website seems to be under going maintenance every day as I read the comments. I generally check in later in the day. All in all a fun experience.

I believe that PITB from 5-13-73 is not inc in the Miller sbd - maybe more will be released?

Why can't I down load Sugaree @ 10:40 pm PT? It's not daylight savings yet. I got kick out 3 times earlier in the day. So I waited until the evening because I had better success, earlier at the start of your great idea!! Why just leave things hanging? Is it an east coast program run by a west coast site? Please post tomorrow or Monday when there is less traffic. Speaking of Traffic. Anderson Theater? Hey web master take control and let us know how to handle the limitations. People will stray instead of come together which this is about. Missing my sugaree, Please and thank you for the great music!!!!!

Hey folks, cruise through these comments 'til you get to the comment from Canyon Critter, he's posted links to all the songs so far. Including two versions of Easy Wind, I believe because the streaming song was different than the download......I think. Anyway everyday the Canyon Critter person is posting links to all the songs through that day. Be patient, try Firefox instead of Internet Explorer and trying clearing the cache in your browser. Good luck everyone and smile smile smile 'cause Sundays song is gonna be He's Gone.
