We're on a mission to make a miracle every day. As a token of our appreciation for making 2010 an epic year, we're giving away a high-quality 320Kbps download every day this November. That's 30 days of Dead! Intrigued? We're also going to put your knowledge to the test and give you the chance to win some great music from the Dead.
                                                     + More Info
You know your Ables from your Bakers from your C's, but can your finely tuned ears differentiate the cosmic "comeback" tour from a spacey 70's show? Each day we'll post a free download from one of the Dead's coveted shows. Will it be from that magical night at Madison Square Garden in '93 or from way back when they were just starting to warm it up at Winterland? Is that Pigpen's harmonica we hear? Brent on keys? Step right up and try your hand.

Each day, the first person to guess the venue & date correctly will get a Road Trips of their choice. If you’re not first but you've answered correctly, you will also be automatically entered for a weekly prize of THE WARNER BROTHERS STUDIO ALBUMS VINYL BOX (EXCLUSIVE EDITION) or a FORMERLY THE WARLOCKS boxed set. Log in now and enter to win!
                                                   - Less Info
We haven't selected a daily winner yet. The first person to answer correctly will get to pick a Road Trips of their choice. To get started, login or register using the form above.
We haven't selected a winner for the week of 11/22 yet!

Much appreciated

Thanks to the folks at Dead.net for coming up with this challenging contest and providing us all the great music. I'm enjoying each new song download and appreciate your efforts to smooth out the process.

Also, many thanks to Canyon Critter for providing the download links, helpful information and excellent artwork.

Thanks dead.net!

Loving these nuggets. I buy almost all the official releases so I think I can say that "freebies" are a great PR move and a cool thing to do for us. I have had a few minor troubles downloading but nothing major (just erase and try again - only had to do this a couple of times). I like reading people's guesses; I don't look until I've made my guess.
One request - I'm hoping we get a Scarlet > Fire or China > Rider; I know these are not technically one song but you really can't bust these up. I can't wait for the DEW either!
Thanks again!

Today's Stream and Download Versions

jimmanningjr, the, erm, song remains the same for both stream and download links. At this time, for me, it's the "a" version.

He's Gone

Definitely post coma. Too mellow for 1987 (my board for Hartford 1987 is rocking with the crowd). I think 1988. And it sounds like an outdoor venue. Got a Alpine Valley feel to it so 6/23/88 is my choice. I know I have heard this.....

misc comments

I'm with those that put the performance in the same calendar month and venue, but not the same year as the Althea from earlier this week...definitely Brent era.

The song is 12m55 and it's not cut-off, that's just the end of the track; the performance segues into another song.

I synced up one of the AUDs to the download, and it drifts a little at the beginning. I had it synced up later, around the time of the Other One riffs (11m15s of the download) and it was perfect.

Haven't put much effort into the B version. My download is 8m05s at 18.5 MB (19,407,986 bytes)

The best thing about the downloads for me is getting to hear all these different shows trying to find the right one, and building an appreciation for how the song changes over time and how it was performed and sounded in different eras. I'm not much of a headphone user, but it's necessary for this rewarding effort.

so much fun

This is so much fun. I love this guessing of he date and venue of the song. And thanks Dead.net for the free downloads!
I only got the "A" version of this one and it is a real nice version indeed. I am pretty sure that is Brent and I am guessing that it is from a 1990 show, but I am probably wrong.
Do or do not; there is no try.

and no big deal...

....about the abrupt cutoff on the A version. So what, as long as we know we got the whole download?

At the point where A ends, they've gone into a jam which had become the standard peak point of Bird Song explorations by late '88 or so (unfortunately, it became rote, whereas before that Bird Song jams were always completely open-ended). At Greensboro '89, they did BS (with this jam) in the first set, then returned to it out of space as a (wonderful) lauch-in to the Other One. So there could be a clue there, good chance the next tune is either Other One or (more likely) drumz-space-> Other One.

But I was so wrong about Sugaree yesterday, that I dare not feign authority!

Jerry

Guess if you were guessing based on Jerry's singing, definitely post-coma. I'd say 1990-1991. Certainly not my favorite period of Dead and there is way better versions of this song, but thank you thank you thank you people at Dead.net! Any Jerry is Good Jerry. What an awesome concept! Fun to see what you guys dig up from the vaults. Good thing I'm not involved in deciding what to include, it would be tough! Love and Peace

He's Gone

One of my favorite all time versions of this song. I didn't think I stood a chance to get one of these, but I did. The East Coast crowds on that tour were unbelieveably stoked to have Jerry back from the brink and the band channelled the energy.

Brentified

Couldn't be 1991, no Brent then and Brent is definitely singing and playin' on "A" version. 1989 is a very good guess for the year.

This is so cool.

I know they didn't do it for me, but it has been a really long (and hard) summer. With tomorrow being my birthday, 30 Days is a really cool break, and a really nice gift.

Asides:

I also found that Easy Wind was cut, too. That is the other "b" Version, at:

http://www.dead.net/fetchFile.php?file=/sites/deadbeta.rhino.com/30daysmp3/easywindb.mp3

This works, too, if you space out and miss a day - user the:

http://www.dead.net/fetchFile.php?file=/sites/deadbeta.rhino.com/30daysmp3/

Then add the (songname).mp3 to the end. If the file is 0 bytes, do songnamea.mp3, and then also try songnameb.mp3.

I hope everyone is having a good Autumn, and that next year is looking good for you. I miss that place where we were all ok with each other, where we could just be friends, even if we just met.

He's Gone B

Bobby seems to be in the mood of dedicating songs to various states during 1972.

The city where this He's Gone was performanced also exists in the US state that the song following this one was dedicated to. Read that carefully so it makes sense.

The state name is omitted in the download (intentionally, I figure).

I have tried to be patient

I have tried to be patient as far as posting my guess, but I have to get up for work early...

usually by now they have pulled the dl, but I am sure someone beat me to it anyway..

my guess was 3-26-1987 hartford civic center

usually i wait, but they seem to be late tonight

it goes into drums, not other one

also the synch of the screaming girl among other things put me in mind of this show

besides, at this point the winner is already gone, so who cares if people begin posting their ideas for what show it is?!
we get to hear more shows by listening to every ones choices!!

Going Where the Water Tastes Like Wine...

Thanks deadheadned...I got a little dislexic there ;-)

This is definately 1987 stuff. I mean WOW, it makes me want to cry a tear of joy how friggin cool this song is at FULL Blast with my Surround Sound Klipsch....oh shit the neighbor just yelled at me.......wait i just went over there to watch football, he's yelling come on back man, your Raiders are on TV again, stop blasting that Dead music man, oh wait this is He's Gone...... ;-) needless to say twas a fun night.

This is DEFINITELY HARTFORD 1987, I know because I remember distinctively the New Year Oakland shows of the same year and Jerry Wailin like that and Bobby, Brent backin up with the vocal like that....even some Phil vocals too (PHIL Bombs) .

Oh and seantrandall...that 6/23/88 show (definately check it out) was the absolute chills up and down your body show. Remember the Blackbird? In fact I used that same Morning Dew in my video warmup for last years Furthur shows in March (which were magical and special).

Chicago Furthur Warm Up Movie from Canyon Critter on Vimeo.

Canyon Critter Productions Presents.....
This a Tour of the city of Chicago before the 2 Epic Chicago March shows 2010. This is for everyone to get pumped up for the shows. People from all over the country and Deadvids and Deadnet came.

Music from The Grateful Dead live at Alpine Valley 1988.

Anyway...man what fun huh?

Another perfect day...

Effortlessly downloaded both a and b on first go, complete and intact. I'm not doing anything different, and I see some folks had probs today, so I think it's just traffic. Be patient or come back later.

It's 5:30 pm Monday here on the Gold Coast in Oz now, so 7:30 am GMT or about 3:30 am in SF and 6:30 am in NY. This seems to be a quiet time traffic-wise, at least today.

Enjoying the ear candy now; how sweet...

is there any consensus on

is there any consensus on why there are a and b versions of certain songs? are they slated for release later in the month, so that the thirty days include 2 versions of easy wind and he's gone? or was someone supposed to decide on which one to use, but never got around to it. the fact that in both cases the a version was the official release, makes me tend to think that we will see the b versions later on, unless the fact that everyone has already downloaded them makes for a sudden change of plans, and we get two more songs, with no repeats, and the b versions are just bonus tracks.

i'll throw in my thanks here too, for the dead.net team and canyon critter.

OK, 2 times now I've been burned because when I got on the page was down for "maintenance" and I couldn't download the song. Both times now it's been a favorite tune! Some of us only get a chance to visit once a day

What a unnecessary, snarky comment. Nobody is trying to "control" anyone. I suggested something, full stop. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever why anyone should put their answers in the comments. There is a very simple way to submit your answer. If you haven't noticed, songs from previous days are posted in the comments, so there is a very good and compelling reason to read them.

I look forward to every week (especially Mondays) to listening to the Taper's Section which have whole snippets of sets and fun. David Lemuiex opens up the vault for us and plays these gems each week (they are all archived too).

If you are new here and would like to find them, it's under the features button or just click the picture here.

Can't wait for the next 30 days songs either.

He's Gone B

This as to be from Paris, May 4th 1972 and would fit all the criteria, including Texas state ref.
Notice the original guitar intro, all on one note apart from the second bar which includes the additional bass note now fixed as the standard intro - as heard on "Europe '72.
Any advances on this?

All I meant was that when the new song for the day is posted, don't read any posts. You can read all the posts you want AFTER you have made your guess.
I respect that in your opinion nobody should post their answers.
But you should also respect my opinion that I don't think anyone here should be telling anyone what they can and can't post.
