As the 1980s rolled into 1990, the Dead's post-midnight set on 1/1/90 included this combination is a wildly dissonant "Victim Or The Crime" before heading into the first California "Dark Star "since 7/13/84

    not the only pairing ..

as many suggested ... but here's an odd fact ....the 1st one (the correct one) was only the 1st verse (being my personal 1st, I definitely was waiting for the 2nd ;-) of Dark Star .... and the oddity ... the 2nd pairing ('92) , had only the 2nd verse ... (!)
mysterious, for sure .... .. would it surprise anyone if they waited for that 2nd pairing to finish it off !?!? (lol)

RE: not the only pairing ..

Perhaps the 6/22/92 version (second verse only) was closing out the previous version (first verse only) from 6/8/92. Search Grateful Dead Dark Star Graph to see all versions mapped out on the deadessays blog. Cool stuff if you want to go deep!

all I needed … got tickets 20 minutes before start ! …Jerry with the Wolf, and either contacts, or no glasses … shouldn’t be too big of a hint to mention the guest slide guitarist in the 1st set … what a bonus !

thq DL for a great month …..

Feel like a Gambler (Stranger), rolling the dice pleading the last pick for day 30 of 30 Dead Days to be a late era Brent (with or w/o Help~Slip) Franklin's Tower segue into Blow Away! After that?...

I found two shows with this sequence, but only one had Bobby's give-away date comment, of course.
Also, I decided to go with the venue name that was printed on the ticket.

I did the same and used the venue and date on the ticket. I flew in from OH and showed up to the show with an extra ticket. Celebrated pre-show in a bar “where it all began.” Thank you for a real good time!

When I saw this pairing I knew exactly what show it was without even having to look it up or listen. I was there! And I knew it would include Bobby’s little pronouncement, which I remember well! It was a magical night! And coincidentally, I had just photographed this ticket stub last week, so I have it on my phone! And I think I’ll go by the venue on the ticket as well. I also noticed that the hint is technically incorrect. But I am guessing the second one is an abbreviated version with only one verse.

Was the concert from May of the same year at the same venue? Anyone here attend both concerts?

For today's guess, I looked at the ticket but chose the opposite of what was on the ticket.

I was there too, this one was a gift. I had slipped this ticket into Kesey's book which was basically a beautifully illustrated modern version of the trail and death of Socrates but with Neil Cassidy as the main character. Work took me overseas for years and that ticket reappeared in mint condition. It has since been beautifully framed. Most of my other stubs are sitting in a box waiting for those jaunts down memory lane.

that whole month was filled with amazing guests and performances.
thanks dave
edit: this venue seems to have it all. looked thru old 30 days and saw 2 different ones, drop down to enter contest has a whole gaggle of em.
deadbase says this
stats says that
cant find my stubs and stuff fro that year.
looks like eeny meany miney mo catch a venue by the toe.
is it arena, stadium, coliseum, theater, theatre, let me know.
cause the rest of the 30 day audience wants to know.

see y’all tomorrow for finale

was thinkin ( scary)
maybe one of the regulars can post a comment next year on day 1 with some of our unwritten rules and bits of info as to how it works to save newbie confusion.

Yeah, Dave forgot one I guess! First show I found was the wrong one because I couldn't really hear textbook Brent in the music like most his jams. So naturally I looked after his death thinking its a Vince Welnik era & found one almost exactly 2 & 1/2 years after the CORRECT show. Well, thanks to the folks in the comments, I know I am not crazy! At least when I knew to check Brent's era it didn't take long, though there still was some confusion as to what the hell the name is on that big crumbling behemoth of a venue.

I want to thank you, for a real good time. If you like yesterday's song combo offer, I recommend searching for video of February 4th show at Family Dog to get a feel for what it was like in that venue in that era. Also, I have found some interesting recorded versions of the song, Gloria, starting with a in the studio jam in April 1979, as well as some jams in fall of '79 with Gloria theme, and the Europe '81 Melkweg show and BCT '84 show. My first DS was 8/14/85 with a band called, Kokomo, with Brent and Billy, Hampton Beach, NH.

One thing I have learned is that while I prefer the format and layout of GDSets for set list searching, for various reasons sometimes I find more shows on herbibot. So what was 1 became 2 and I got it on the second try.

I've met Deadheads who hated Victim or the Crime back in the day, but I think it's an excellent song. On the other hand, I kind of liked Day Job*, so what do I know?

*I was looking at Day Job in the set lists and it turns out I saw the very last Day Job ever played! The Death of Day Job!

Searchlight casting for a new dickhead in the clouds of delusion..
Kind of feel like the Crime with this one being so easy today.
Only 1 more Day. Very grateful for these 30 Days of Fun.

saw the ‘Keep Your Day Job’ mention … reminded me of the only time ever I saw a song repeated (closing both 1st sets even) 2 days in a row .. same venue to boot (minor tapers joke ;-)… had to go way back b4 my time to find something similar

* to compliment the fool > I also saw the final version .. and guess what ? it closed the 1st set at that very same venue !! lol

Thankfully DARK STAR didn’t suffer the same fate as ST STEPHEN- three and done- when the boys chose to bring it back. I, like so many others, pilgrimaged to this show in search of that elusive nugget (after missing the Bobby birthday gem show) and it was beautiful and dark and trippy and perfect. It was my first, but just the first of many to come.
And I never saw a bad VICTIM- the song got some flak from some, but it surely made its presence felt on this night

I love the 30 Days and look forward to it every year. But part of that is the challenge. Why so easy this year?

How Bob can pull it together into coherent playing and singing on Victim given how festive he's feeling.

And that Dark Star is VERY dark and cavernous. I liked the mouth sounds Mickey???? was making.

The song in the first set that Pig used to sing performed by Jerry is quite good. I wasn't aware Jerry played that one so it's a first for me. I would have loved to be at this show in person.

Any 30 Days with two Dark Star mp3's is an excellent 30 Days! (And, I think this is the only one, yet.)
