30 Days of Dead November 9

Today's Song

My Brother Esau, Might As Well
Hint: A Bob and a Jerry song to close a first set, two songs played quite a bit in the mid 1980s, from the last of two shows in this state

Answer

Morgantown, WV, Coliseum - West Virginia University
4/10/1983
My Brother Esau was in the repertoire 1983-1987, and Might As Well was played from 1976 until the mid 1980s, and then only occasionally would it appear in the setlist

This is a live stream on YouTube, a benefit for the fires in California. Metallica already did their set, i think. I just tuned in at G-Easy, who just finished. Dave Matthews is playing now, and i do believe that Dead and Co. are up next. Hope i got it right! Peace!

Great set of hints there. If you have a Dead Base, you shouldn't have any trouble finding this one.

Venue

My hometown! I can see the roof of this venue from my front porch! However, i have never heard it referred to by the name listed on setlists and have no idea where they got that from. i think setlists has the venue in the other city mixed up with the one in my town.

did i get this one right ?

though i'm quite sure i've got it, the page i used at archive.org lists the venue name differently.

oh well, for me the fun of 30 Days is the search; all the great music that i discover on the way.

You're fine most likely...

Your probably right on the money. I saw 2 diff names of the venue on the various print & web listings of this show in my searches as well.

Looks like the hint has been modified

either I misread earlier, but was much more of a giveaway, so perhaps there are early bird clues now. anyway the earlier of the two shows is among the greatest and well worth hunting out too.

Keys are my key

For me, the keyboards are usually one of the first clues to figuring out the correct era to narrow the search (I'm a keyboard player). This version of My Brother Esau is performed with a clavinet tone played through a Yamaha GS-1 digital synthesizer. This tune featured several different keyboard tones on early versions including clavinet, electric piano, and synthesizer, but finally settled on that killer Hammond B3 organ tone (my favorite) for every version over the last several years of its tenure.

Nice catch Pondo!

I love learning little things like this on these forums. B-3 is my favorite Brent sound too. Did he really have 6 leslies on stage at once toward the end? Must have been loud af. I saw some shows back then but don't remember.

THX 4 the freebies every year

Thank you deadnet for an actual clue every few days instead of a piece of trivia related to the song. Sure wish i had 6 hours every day to comb through the archive for a needle in a haystack. So its nice to have a shot at getting one right every now and again.
On a sidenote wonder if there is a reference out there to search dead sets for song>song it seems like setlist just allows for a search of one of the songs that are played. For instance today you can search for my brother esau or might as well but not my brother esau>might as well. unless I'm missing something.Cheers and happy hunting y'all.

song and song and song (and set and city and date)

Go to deadlists.com and go to search. It will allow you to look for up to a 3 song combo (but careful bc it will give you shows when both songs were played but in a different order than u may be looking for.) Make sure to spell it correctly and put the whole song (ex: Feel Like a Stranger .... instead of Stranger)
you can also pick which set it was from.

Archive dot org

I enter the song title (or song titles as in today's case) into the search box on archive dot org under the GD main search page. It will list all instances of those terms on any show entry. This can be problematic as it will also show any instance of these words in the comments section of a show. But you can narrow your search further by selecting only a certain year or years. This helps immensely. Then there is the slight confusion of getting the list of search results in more or less chronological order on archive dot org. That site can be a little weird. Clicking on "Date Published" can solve this (or screw it up). Sometimes I only enter less words for a song title or titles to avoid confusion (for example I might enter just: Esau Might As Well into the search box).

For setlist dot fm you could open 2 separate tabs on your computer and search for the 2 different songs in those separate tabs. But you would have to A/B back & forth on the list to see how they align which could be tedious. I have good results with searching archive dot org as above.

Good luck!

Setlist.com & Relisten

I start with setlist.com - in today's case, I entered the 2 songs (and set 1), then hit Search... it displayed setlists for all instances of those 2 songs in set 1 (there were only 20).
With that info, I used Relisten to find a sonic match with the 30 Days selection.

Took me a couple days to realize I could sort by list and not thumbnail. So I got that going for me, which is nice.

It's not online, and you

It's not online, and you probably know this already, but the Every Time Played section of Deadbase also lists the songs played before and after. So, while one can't specifically look for a certain pairing, one can scan the list for Esau and quickly find the times it was played before Might as Well.

Again, a lot of people already know this, but it seems some don't so it might be helpful.

New tunes were babes...

Interesting to hear some more of this show and others in this era where the In The Dark & other 80s "new songs" were still in their fledgling stages. Another big one comes up in this show after today's pairing that is a bit frantic & disjointed. Some lyrics are well not quite there. Very different from the power house that it would become.

I had a tape of the next show after today's show & loved that 2nd set. I think some of that show is getting cued up for listening next.

ENJOY!

... shucks. I put a star next to that show, but went a different direction. Dave's version was crystal clear, the shows I was comparing it to suppressed the keyboards a bit so I wasn't picking it up...

Going back it sounds quite obvious. As hindsight usually is...

On to number 9....

Might as Well throw an easy one after making us Shadowbox the Apocalypse yesterday. Dave gave me a sleepless night as I was stumped by yesterday's Mississippi-Franklins. Thanks so much for the 30 Days!! It makes the first 20 degree day a little more tolerable. Might as Well keep jamming!!

Roller skates

I was at the shows for the 4th, 5th and 6th versions of Esau. Since today's official hint made the search an easy lay up, I checked and found that the earliest versions had Esau on Roller skates, but today's selection did not. Always interesting following the unfolding of a new tune and how lyrics can change over time. Sometimes the changes seem purposeful, sometimes just a flub in the singer's performance. One of my all time favorites was when Jerry started singing "Brokedown" in Pittsburgh, realized he had started with the second line, then the band drifted into a "hey, what's wrong with this picture?", and everyone, on and off stage, had a big laugh. I was standing by Candace Brightman and we shared a glance of "What?" Jerry, as we know not being prone to verbal diatribes called out, "sounded good, didn't it?" How could you not just adore these blokes?

Lyrics

Jud,
He is referring to the lyrics of Brother Esau & their evolution over the years. Specifically the absence of the words "roller skates". In earlier versions there was a line about "Esau sells real estate on roller skates in LA" (or some arrangement of those words if I do not have them correct).

I guess it doesn’t matter anyway

I’m pretty awful at finding the shows these songs belong to. My hats off to those that do. But, no matter because whatever I guess, I just listen to that show and I’m so grateful the music is available.

So enjoy!

I believe there were 4 total

Two were in their home state, one of which was also not in the hinted set, nor did it close that set.

One was an "into" combination. Interestingly (or not), that one was the last of two played at the Venue. Uncommon state, but more than 2 shows were played there over the years.

So it came down to one that matched what was truly a hint today!

Geez...

I know you're excited that you figured it out, but this is the least subtle hint I've ever seen!

"Even a blind man knows when the sun is shining..."

Granted, Dave's hint actually helped today, but yours practically spells out what show it is...

Now, I gotta go take a shower - Bobby spit on me during his fevered delivery of that baby Esau, known at the time as "Bobby's New Noise"

The pendulum swings

The hint today, combined with Deadbase, narrows this one down to only one possibility without actually listening to it.

Listen anyway.

I remember when Esau was in heavy rotation, it wasn't on my list of tunes I was hoping for. Funny how these things work, because when they dropped it entirely, I missed it. And, Might As Well was always a great ride.
